That old familiar song... on TikTok

Is Stella Cole living in the past? Considering the songs she loves to sing, we might all want to join her. We certainly can be grateful for the reminder of how great these songs are. Hear for yourself when she makes her Cabaret Series debut next month.

Cole came to fame posting her songs on TikTok, but the songs harked back to her grandparents’ generation. “Over the Rainbow,” “The Boy Next Door,” “Moon River,” “My Foolish Heart,” and American standards by artists like Judy Garland and Nat “King” Cole come from an earlier time—from artists who never knew they would go “viral.”

Growing up, Cole loved watching and singing along to classic movies like Meet Me in St. Louis and Singin’ in the Rain, but by the time she grew up and left for Northwestern University, she had stopped. Ironically, she was double majoring in international studies and theater. This in spite of the fact that she was now terrified of singing in front of people.

But in one theater class, the professor suggested she turn to the wall to sing and ignore the class. She did and blew everyone away. Her classmates were astonished, and Cole’s fear was broken.

When Covid hit, she returned home, where her father encouraged her to keep singing.

continued on page 10

Photo: Antoine Benoit Godet

continued from page 8

He suggested she try the very modern creation of YouTube where she was a hit. Cole also went viral on a new thing called TikTok, and everything took off. She says it makes sense, since many of the songs she loves were popular in the 1930s and ’40s during the Great Depression and World War II, another time of uncertainty and unpredictability.

“During the pandemic lockdown, thousands of people were sending me messages saying, ‘You don’t know how much you’ve helped me,’ and ‘your music is the one thing cheering me on right now,’” says Cole. “I hadn’t realized that music had that kind of power to help people.

“It’s amazing to think that my music can be a bit of a salve or balm for people’s stress and anxiety,” continues Cole. “That’s the most gratifying thing of all, experiencing how this music can actually help people.”

Obviously, there are many people who sing the same kind of music, but Cole takes it to a new level. She has produced three albums as well as numerous singles and is getting rave reviews. Her social media following of 1.7 million (and growing) certainly helps.

“So many people of my generation aren’t familiar with these songs, and I’m excited about the opportunity to introduce this timeless music to a new audience,” she told Broadwayworld.

com. “These songs were written decades before I was born, yet they feel like they are about my life.”

Social media is all very well, but a singer of Cole’s caliber needs more than that. She moved to New York City and started working as a dog walker while she tried to launch her career. She eventually got a job singing with a band at a restaurant, and then another, and another, until she had a full-fledged schedule. Then she graduated to stages. The dogs had to find new friends.

After a European tour and an appearance at the renowned 54 Below in New York City, it’s safe to say that Cole has a very bright future ahead of her. And she will no doubt keep growing those social media views. What does she ultimately want?

“I’ve seen the way music, and specifically this music, can touch people’s souls,” she says. “That sounds [silly], but as an artist, that’s the goal.” There is no doubt she’s already there.

An epic love story

A notebook. It’s a simple thing, but what is written in it can also tell quite a story.

Considered by many to be the pinnacle of romantic stories, The Notebook started as a book by Nicholas Sparks. It then became a movie, and now it’s a Tony®-nominated hit Broadway musical. You may know the story by heart, but you haven’t seen it like this.

“The Notebook hasn’t lost its romantic magic,” says the Guardian USA Today calls it “life-affirming and ingeniously adapted,” while The New Yorker says it “feels as fresh as the rainwater that drenches the meant-for-eachother lovers.”

You don’t need a spoiler alert. A young couple, one from a wealthy family, one from a poor family, fall in love and, despite all obstacles thrown at them over the ensuing decade, finally get together and live happily ever after … almost. Years later, Allie is now in a nursing home with Alzheimer’s and unable to recall much of her past. Noah visits every day, reading to her from a notebook that tells their story. He hopes this will jog her memory to recall their life together.

There are three sets of leads—young Allie and Noah, the middle-aged pair, and old Allie and Noah. Sometimes they are on stage at the same time. It may sound confusing but it works

as the story is told in a non-linear way. The middle-aged couple might watch a flashback of their meeting the summer they first fell in love. Older Allie sees young and middle-aged Allie, who remind her that all her selves are still with her.

Probably the most difficult part of The Notebook is the role Alzheimer’s plays in the story. In a sense, it’s the whole reason for the story. Can Noah help Allie remember their love story? As the musical recounts their lives together, it’s a poignant reminder of how they are now torn apart by this disease. Allie lives with a cloud of confusion about her life. How much can she remember and share with Noah, if only for a few hours?

“It turns out, The Notebook is why we go to the theater,” says Cleveland.com. “To get swept up, forget the world outside and feel everything. There are tears, but laughter and joy too.”

The Notebook will remind you all over again how love has the ability to conquer all. Take the words of the Chicago Tribune: “Absolutely gorgeous, not to be missed.”

Introducing Alexander Shelley

In November 2024, for the first time in more than three decades, Pacific Symphony announced it had named Alexander Shelley as its new artistic and music director.

Shelley—a highly respected British conductor who has been a transformational leader of orchestras in Europe and North America—will serve as Pacific Symphony’s artistic and music director designate this season (2025–26), before fully taking on his new role as artistic and music director in 2026–27. Known for inspiring musicians and audiences alike, Alexander Shelley looks forward to making deep connections with both Pacific Symphony’s musicians and the Orange County community. We spoke with him about what he sees as his role here, how he shares the wonder of his work, his insatiable musical curiosity, and his goal of inspiring audiences of all ages and interests.

What is it about this role at Pacific Symphony that excites you?

AS: Pacific Symphony is poised for great things. In less than 50 years it has been built into something truly extraordinary—one of America’s major orchestras and a cultural pillar of this region. The musicians are passionate, collaborative, and fearless in their pursuit of excellence, and the audiences are enthusiastic and curious. I’m inspired by the sense of possibility here, the generosity of the community, the orchestra’s adventurous spirit, and the opportunity to help shape Pacific Symphony’s next chapter on both a national and international stage.

Collaboration is often evident in your programming; you combine other types of arts—visual art, dance, etc.—with your orchestra programs. Will we see some of this in the coming seasons?

AS: I’m a great believer in the impact of

cross-disciplinary collaborations. There are extraordinary partnerships to be explored. It’s exciting to think of the possibilities!

Everyone has a different personal connection or entry-point to the arts—people respond viscerally to rhythm or poetry or movement or music, and it’s my role to invite everyone to find their entry point to that world. This is how we grow audiences, and it’s also how we inspire artists as well. I love working in this playground of creativity and giving people the opportunity to discover things that move them.

What does community mean to you and how will it be underlined during your time with Pacific Symphony?

AS: The stories of our time fascinate me. Bringing those stories to life through music is essential for reflecting who we are and the world in which we live. When we do this— especially through new work—we reach curious, engaged people through art. Connecting with contemporary music also renews our appreciation of masterpieces from the past; they were once new, and their premieres often also had powerful receptions!

For me, community encompasses our whole ecosystem—extraordinary musicians, loyal audiences, students and youth ensembles, and those discovering the orchestra for the very first time. Who we commission, our collaborators, and how we create experiences that inspire the next generation shapes our community. I’ve seen how thoughtful programming and genuine outreach can change lives, and I’m excited to build on Pacific Symphony’s incredible legacy of creating community through music.

How important is connection through music?

AS: Feeling a connection with an artist or with an audience opens hearts and minds and makes communication with one another easier.

Whether it’s through a four-minute pop song of pure joy or longing or sadness, or a symphony that takes listeners on a longer journey to one of those same emotions, music challenges us. It’s my job to bring our audiences along on that journey. This is true whether I’m leading a concert for kids who’ve never heard classical music or a large-scale Mahler work for our regular concertgoers—we take this journey together. The rewards of this adventure have an impact far beyond a particular moment.

What or who are some of your greatest musical influences?

AS: Certainly, in my early years, my parents were my greatest musical influence. I’ve shared with Pacific Symphony audiences before that I had the privilege of growing up in a household with five grand pianos in it. My parents were the first people I ever heard making music, and the first people I ever made music with as I was growing up. They instilled in me a sense of reverence for the score and responsibility to the composer. We are their servants, after all!

In addition to the great composers, I also have a number of conducting heroes, such as Carlos Kleiber, who inspired me through his great attention to detail coupled with enormous freedom. I have a voracious musical appetite and love exploring it all. I’ve adored jazz since I was a kid, and Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans remain idols of mine. I love producers of great pop songs and what they give the world. We live in such an exciting age for composition, with great freedom of what to create and write. There really are no limits!

Don’t miss Alexander Shelley conducting Stravinsky’s Firebird with Pacific Symphony, January 15–18, 2026—an unforgettable performance with stunning visuals at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall.

Toast to Curtain Call

The unveiling of American artist Karon Davis’ Curtain Call, a larger-than-life sculpture of a ballerina taking her bow, was unveiled on October 2, prior to the opening of San Francisco Ballet’s production of Frankenstein in Segerstrom Hall that evening.

“I am honored and thrilled to have this piece on display at the Center,” says Davis. “The Center’s dance tradition has always been unparalleled, and Curtain Call reminds us of the reward of a great performance before the dancer heads back to the rehearsal room the next day to continue to practice.”

Curtain Call is part of an ongoing series, Beauty Must Suffer, which examines the physical and emotional labor behind the pursuit of balletic beauty, particularly among Black dancers working within the Eurocentric tradition of ballet. The work, created using a combination of 3D scanning and traditional sculpting techniques, serves as a tribute to the dancers who inhabit the Center stages. It will be displayed in the Center in the Orchestra-level lobby during the 2025–26 season.

Ease on down the road with The Wiz

What does the revival of the musical The Wiz have in common with Beyoncé’s hit “All the Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)”? Both were choreographed by the same person: JaQuel Knight. He was only 19 years old at the time he perfected Beyoncé’s hand twist.

Knight is well known in the rap and R&B world, having also choreographed for singers like Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Britney Spears, Kelly Rowland, and Nicole Scherzinger, and has a thriving career. So what is he doing on Broadway?

When Knight was asked to work on a musical, he could not pass on the challenge to revamp The Wiz, a legendary show. The Wiz has been a

vibrant part in Black culture since it opened and has never gone away. Although film versions didn’t do well (sorry, Michael Jackson) it’s been a firm favorite for local community productions. Everyone can sympathize with Dorothy’s search for her place in the contemporary world.

The original production of The Wiz—a groundbreaking twist on The Wizard of Oz opened on Broadway in 1975 and won seven Tony® Awards, including Best Choreography for George Faison. But that production seems dated today, and those involved with creating the 21st-century show wanted to bring it to a new era and create a performance that was timeless. (The book and sets have also been updated.)

continued on page 22

Photo: Jeremy Daniel

“We took out all the buffoonery talk of the original piece, and then just made a timeless classic that’s funny, with awesome music, and what I hope is [great] dancing,” says Knight.

Knight was excited to execute his vision. He had no pre-conceived ideas of what Broadway dance “should” be and reached into his experience with Black dance to create a new energy for the characters, including Dorothy, who wears silver booties in this version.

“I dreamed as big as I could,” says Knight. “For me, it was about how do we keep the essence and energy [of the original production] and also bring JaQuel Knight to the table?”

In Knight’s version, there’s not a tap shoe in sight. “I really wanted to create something that didn’t feel super ‘now,’” Knight told dancemagazine.com. “But it takes you on a journey of Black dance. There’s a little bit of everything”

This

For a dance sequence performed at the gates of the Emerald City, Knight works his dance magic, mixing ballet, jazz, and hip hop. “Knight called his take on the number ‘a master class in Black movement, not just through the choreography but in attitude and personality,’” says The New York Times. It’s “a dizzying array of dance from the Black diaspora, from street styles out of Atlanta to Afrobeats,” says dancemagazine.com.

“Knight’s kinetic choreography successfully makes the songs visually appealing on stage,” says broadwayworld.com. “Yet most of all, this musical will certainly leave audiences feeling joyful and moved at the same time.”

And isn’t that what a great Broadway musical should do?

About The Nutcracker

Choreography by

Set and costume design by RICHARD

Associate Designers: JUSTIN ARIENTI and MAURICIO ELORRIAGA

Lighting by JENNIFER TIPTON

Synopsis:

ACT I

Scene 1, The Kitchen

On Christmas Eve, the Stahlbaum kitchen is alive with activity as cooks and housekeepers bustle about preparing for the family’s annual holiday party. The Nanny keeps a watchful eye over the Stahlbaum children, Clara and Fritz. Once preparations are done, everyone adjourns to the parlor to greet the guests. Clara turns back as she exits and is startled to see a mouse. She runs to join the others in the dining room. With the kitchen completely empty, more mischievous mice appear and scurry about looking for scraps of the holiday meal.

Scene 2, The Party

The Stahlbaums welcome family and friends to their grand parlor replete with holiday decorations, including a beautiful Christmas tree. The party grows festive with music and dance as Clara’s godfather, Drosselmeyer, magically appears. A skilled toymaker always full of the most inventive surprises, Drosselmeyer entertains everyone as he presents four life-sized dolls. However, these dolls cannot be played with, and Clara is disappointed. Then, Drosselmeyer gives Clara a unique Nutcracker handsomely dressed as a soldier. Fritz becomes jealous of his sister and rushes at her, snatching the Nutcracker from her and breaking it. A heartbroken Clara looks on as Drosselmeyer repairs the Nutcracker. As the evening grows late, the guests depart and the Stahlbaum family retires for a long winter night’s rest.

Scene 3, The Battle

During the night, a sleepy Clara tiptoes back down the staircase in search of her beloved Nutcracker. As the clock strikes midnight, Clara sees Drosselmeyer’s face on the clock and becomes distressed by mice scampering into the room from all sides. The Nutcracker tries to help her but is carried away by the mice. Drosselmeyer appears just in time to catch Clara as she faints from fright. As she recovers, Clara sees her house change all around her. The Christmas tree grows large and wondrous. The Nutcracker heroically summons the toy soldiers to help fend off the scurrying mice. The fierce Mouse King arrives and engages in a duel with the Nutcracker. Just when it seems the evil Mouse King may be victorious, Clara takes off her shoe and bravely throws it at him, casting a fatal blow. As the mice quickly retreat, the Nutcracker transforms into a young Prince.

Scene 4, The Snow

The Stahlbaum parlor suddenly becomes quite cold and snowflakes begin to fall. At first, the snow falls gently as if in a waltz but it builds into a frightful blizzard. Drosselmeyer brings a small sleigh to rescue Clara and the Prince from the freezing snow, and the moonlight guides them on a shining path for their journey over snowcovered hills.

ACT II

Land of the Sugar Plum Fairy

Drosselmeyer navigates the sleigh through the blizzard to safety in the sunny Land of the Sugar Plum Fairy. The Sugar Plum Fairy and her subjects are amazed to learn of Clara’s bravery in killing the Mouse King, and the Fairy commands a festival in honor of Clara, featuring charming dances from around the world. As the celebration draws to a close, Clara receives her greatest Christmas wish and sees herself transformed into a beautiful Princess to dance in the arms of her Nutcracker Prince.

EPILOGUE

Christmas Morning

As the joyous celebration and magic kingdom fade, Clara suddenly finds herself alone in her room on Christmas morning, wondering: “Was this all a dream?”

There will be one intermission.

The ABT Women’s Movement

In 2017, ABT launched The ABT Women’s Movement, formerly the Women Choreographers Initiative. The program supports the creation, exploration, and staging of new works by female choreographers for ABT and ABT Studio Company.

Commissions and presentations of new works by women choreographers are supported by the ABT Women’s Movement, sparked by funding from the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation.

Champion support for The ABT Women’s Movement is provided by Jenna Segal.

ABT RISE Advisory Council

The ABT RISE Advisory Council engages the leadership of trustee and non-trustee advisors to advance the Company’s commitment to universal respect and holistic well-being. As a collective, Advisory Council members serve as guides and ambassadors in creating a more vibrant and welcoming future for dance.

From a vision that evolved from a small group of passionate parents more than 25 years ago, Sage Hill School has emerged as the leading independent high school in Orange County. The intention was to develop a school that would inspire innovative thinking, nurture creative thought and embrace community.

Inspired by the opportunity to expand on the mission and values of its founders, Sage Hill has launched a capital campaign with an ambitious goal of $25 million This campaign will enable more students to experience the impact of a Sage Hill education. As we become the first 7-12 independent school in Orange County, we seek philanthropic investment that will:

• Expand the Sage Hill program to include a middle school that educates 7th and 8th grade students

• Build a new academic and athletics facility that enhances the Sage Hill experience for all

• Strengthen the student body with increased commitment to financial assistance

Support the Campaign We invite all who are interested to play a vital role in bringing this historic milestone to life. For more information on Sage Hill’s capital campaign, including potential naming opportunities for donors, please contact:
