Swan Lake is probably the most wellknown ballet in the Western world. There’s something about those dancers in white tutus and feathered headbands that audiences love. Add the famous score by Tchaikovsky and it becomes ballet royalty. Now, Miami City Ballet brings choreographer Alexei Ratmansky’s new “old” version of this master work to the Center next month.
It might surprise many that what we see onstage today is not exactly what the original ballet looked like. Ratmansky has gone back to Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov’s choreographic notations for their revival of Swan Lake in 1895, which were brought to the United States after the Russian Revolution and went into an archive at Harvard University.
The production is getting rave reviews. Alistair Macaulay says, “This Swan Lake is the one by which we should judge all others.” The New York Times says, “I have the strangest feeling I’ve finally seen Swan Lake, and many more people should see it, too.”
Over the years there have been changes, additions, and modifications to Swan Lake depending on the choreographer and the style of the dance company. Dancers today are stronger and much more athletic than they were in the 19th century, and the grand jetés we clap for were not part of the choreography nearly a century and a half ago.
“The versions audiences see today are never based on the original,” says Ratmansky. “They are based on interpretations of other interpretations. I’m not saying these don’t have artistic merit, but my goal is different and very specific. I am making a historically informed production,” he says. “We made some adjustments, but we are trying to stay as faithful to the 1895 notes and other related historical documents as possible.”
“Ratmansky’s reconstruction … is fresh, it’s vital, it effectively tells a story and communicates right to the heart with both joy and pathos,” says Gramilano.com. “Taming the acrobatic side of modern ballet practice reveals
some exciting nuances and allows for greater speed.”
Not that this means the choreography is easy. “There are some original steps that are extremely difficult, even for today’s dancers,” says Ratmansky.
One thing that hasn’t changed is the famous ball scene when the wicked Odile performs 32 fouettés en tournant in succession, an exhaustingly difficult move to execute. A fouetté involves whipping one leg at knee level to spin around (and never touching the ground with it) while on pointe with the other foot. Ratmansky tells us that this showstopper was actually performed by Italian dancer Pierina Legnani in an 1893 production of Cinderella two years before Swan Lake premiered. It caused a sensation, and the audience demanded she repeat the feat immediately.
Legnani—the most famous ballerina of her day—was the original Odile and Petipa included the fouettés as a “trick” to impress the public. It certainly worked and has been part of every production since. “Odile is showing off and this is part of her plan to seduce the prince,” says Ratmansky.
Why is Swan Lake still so popular? In spite of its age, it’s no less breathtaking. “It is beautiful and poetic, with genius choreography,” says
Ratmansky. And, of course, there is Tchaikovsky’s score. “It’s quite emotional, a truly great score,” says Ratmansky, “and all the beautiful melodies stay with you.
“This production gives me great satisfaction to see the logic and inspiration of the original choreographers making it back into the ballet they created in 1895,” he continues. “To see it come alive; it’s ballet archeology.”

Richard Parker won a British Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actor in Life of Pi.
To be more specific, Parker’s crew of three puppeteers shared the award. Richard Parker is the name of the tiger in the play, and just because he’s a very large puppet being handled by the aforementioned trio doesn’t make him any less scary.
Life of Pi, coming to the Center next month, is based on the bestselling novel by Yann Martel. A teen is trapped in a lifeboat from a sinking ship with several animals that were being transported to Canada, including a tiger. For months they drift until Pi suddenly wakes up in a Mexican hospital, where he tells a Canadian diplomat and a Japanese insurance investigator his story. The tiger is nowhere to be found.
by
It’s the 1970s and because of political turmoil in their native India, Pi’s father was taking his family and many of the animals in their zoo to resettle in Canada. On its way, the ship is lost at sea during a storm, along with Pi’s family. Several of the animals survive initially in the lifeboat with Pi, but with a giant tiger as part of the party, they may not last long.
But is Pi’s story true? Has he been hallucinating to blank out a greater trauma? How did he survive sharing a lifeboat with a tiger? And who ends up being more important to the story: the humans or the animals? Audiences will be mesmerized by the drama of Pi’s experience.
Life of Pi won three Tony Awards and an Olivier Award for Best Play. The Wall Street
Journal calls it “an exhilarating evening of theater” while Entertainment Weekly raves, “A dazzling marvel of stagecraft. This powerful production sparks to stunning life.”
But how did a tiger get the name Richard Parker? When the big cat was brought to the zoo, there was a clerical error when an assistant wrote its name as the name of the human who captured him instead of “Thirsty,” the tiger’s real name. It stuck. Well, are you going to argue with a tiger?
Don’t miss this extraordinary theatrical event.

Created in collaboration with Neil Diamond himself, A Beautiful Noise is the uplifting true story of how a kid from Brooklyn became a chart-busting, show-stopping American rock icon. With 120 million albums sold, a catalogue of classics like “America,” “Forever in Blue Jeans,” and “Sweet Caroline,” an induction into the Songwriters and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame, a Grammy® Lifetime Achievement Award, and sold-out concerts around the world that made him bigger than Elvis, Neil Diamond’s story was made to shine on Broadway—and head out on the road across America.
Like Jersey Boys and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical before it, A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical is an inspiring, exhilarating, energy-filled musical memoir, that tells the untold true story of how America’s greatest hitmaker became a star, set to the songs that defined his career.

What is it about Jeremy Jordan?
Tickets for this Broadway sensation’s Center Cabaret debut last season in Samueli Theater flew out of the box office. Now, after his starring role as Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby on Broadway, we welcome him back again. In his highly anticipated return, Jeremy will be performing two nights only in the acoustic splendor of the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall.
The star, who is handsome enough to have starred in two Hallmark movies, will perform some of Broadway greatest hits, including shows he has been part of, as well as Rock of Ages, Carousel, Oklahoma!, and Les Misérables, and, of course, The Great Gatsby, to name a few.
Jordan first hit the big time when he showed off his sensational singing and dancing as the star of Disney’s Newsies, both the stage version and the film, and earned Tony® and Grammy® nominations for the role. He then headed for Hollywood and won plaudits for his television work in NBC’s SMASH and CW’s Supergirl. He starred opposite Anna Kendricks in the film version of Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years and with Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah in Joyful Noise
But it’s the stage that is his real love, and he
has performed in many productions, including Waitress, Little Shop of Horrors (one of his favorite roles), Big River, a concert production of West Side Story at the Hollywood Bowl, and more.
“I’ve always been a singer, I’ve always loved it,” Jordan told myentertainmentworld.com. “Theater and live performance are always … gratifying as an actor; there’s a special energy between the audience and the actor on stage that can’t be duplicated.”
Today, we can add “he’s gone viral,” with videos of him singing his heart out with songs— some more usually sung by women—such as “She Used to Be Mine” from Waitress. Cue gazillions of online views.
Last year Jordan starred in a musical version of The Great Gatsby. We hope he will sing one or two of the songs from it, as well as other unexpected favorite tunes. And with his incredible voice, dancing skills and larger-thanlife charm, you’ll agree, no one does it quite like Jeremy Jordan.

Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall June 28–29

“We’re tired of driving to Los Angeles to see a Broadway show,” said the Center’s original supporters.
Cecil and Kathryn Wright were part of that group. Before the diggers arrived to begin laying the foundation of Segerstrom Hall, the couple had made their first gift and joined a Center Guild. Kathryn was a founding member of the Center Stars support group. They were happy to contribute to the growth of the Center for future generations to enjoy beyond their own lifetime.
After the Center opened in 1986, the couple were regular attendees and gave a bequest to endow the Kathryn and Cecil Wright Fund for Dance at the Center. “We just love this theater,” said Kathryn. “It is truly part of our lives. We both have very strong feelings about the cultural impact the Center has on the lives of residents of Orange County.”
They both cared about the next generation and this started at home. The couple were often seen at performances with one or more of their four nephews who grew up sharing the family love for Broadway shows and dance performances. In particular, nephew Bruce Kuluris and his wife, Susan, have been passed the torch. Bruce attended many performances with his aunt and uncle, as well as fundraising events. “I remember my aunt hosting fundraisers in their home,” says Bruce. “She had Greek heritage and loved to include a favorite Greek dish on the menu.”
Bruce and Susan are also generous supporters. They have subscriptions to the Broadway and Dance series, are members of Center Circles, and often attend cast parties and other Center-hosted events.
“My aunt and uncle were so excited to be part of the founding group dedicated to building the Center,” says Bruce. “They gave a significant legacy gift not just for performances but also to help sustain programs that provide opportunities for those who otherwise would not be able to have access to the beauty and significance of the performing arts.”
“Visionaries like Cecil and Kathryn have given Orange County such a gift in their support for the Center’s creation,” says Casey Reitz, president of the Center. “Their generous patronage, passed down to their next generation, enables the Center to continue its growth as a valuable asset to our community.”
Cecil and Kathryn, who passed away in 2003 and 2013 respectively, would be proud.
If you, too, would like to help Segerstrom Center remain the cultural hub of Orange County, please visit www.scfta.org/donate.

The 2025–26 Cabaret season is going to be big! This season we celebrate legends as well as soon-to-be-legends, welcoming some of theater’s brightest
songs from their separate careers, a few from Rent, as well as stories and fun. Be warned, the Rent songs might turn into a singalong. “All around me folks were rocking out in their seats,” says frontrowcenter.com. “If you are already a fan of these gents or of Rent, you have a huge treat in store.”
It’s time to get dressed up, make your way to Samueli Theater, and join our fabulous Dancing Queens! A cast of New York’s top vocalists perform the super hits of Cher, Madonna, Donna Summer, Whitney Houston, The Pointer Sisters, and more in a celebration of the joy of the dance floor era and the women who made it happen. Get your groove on with songs including “I’m So Excited,” “Dancing Queen,” “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” “Respect,” and “Last Dance.”
Tony Yazbek
Tony Award winner Tony Yazbek returns to the Center with his phenomenal talent for making a song and dance look easy. “Yazbek is not just a singer with amazing range and voice, he is also a tap dancer who has the ease and phenomenal talent of Gregory Hines,” says thefrontrowcenter.com. “The songs, all part of the American songbook, are deep songs whose sounds touch the heart and soul.”
In a recent show at New York City’s 54 Below, Broadwayworld.com described how he presents the songs of another entertainer. “He presents them the Tony Yazbek way. And Tony Yazbek way means dance. Also, few people work the incorporation of joy into their show the way Yazbek does.” But even when he is just standing, singing into the mike, he hits the right spot with his audience. He will touch your heart and soul.
Stella Cole
Another big fan of the Great American Songbook is vocalist Stella Cole. In this age of social media, Cole has a combined social media following of more than 1.6 million. Her famous fans include Michael Bublé, David Foster, James Taylor, and Meghan Trainor. Cole is a young singer with an old soul and sounds as if Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand have taken over her body. “I’m inspired by the pop and jazz singers of the ’40s and ’50s,” she says.
After graduating from Northwestern University, the pandemic hit and she moved back home. It was her father who encouraged Cole to start putting her singing on TikTok. She was an internet hit, but what about IRL? She eventually made it to New York City and started with small gigs in restaurants and coffee shops while she walked dogs to pay the rent. Now Cole tours the world and plays such renowned venues as The Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden …. and Segerstrom Center.
For Broadway fans, Norbert Leo Butz is known for winning two Tony Awards for Best Actor—only nine actors have achieved that. He also originated the role of Fiyero in Wicked. He started his Broadway career as an understudy in the original production of Rent and went on to replace Adam Pascal. The list of Broadway musicals he has performed in is long.
Obviously, Butz can sing. But he’s more than that. In a cabaret setting, Butz is an entertaining entertainer. He writes music and plays the guitar. According to nystagereview.com, “Butz plays the guitar as if he’s a third of his age and forming a rock band.” (Butz is in his mid-50s.)
But he can be soft as well. His own compositions have a quieter, country spin to them, and intermissionblog.com says, “From the moment Butz stepped into the room, he filled it with stories of positivity and songs of hope and love.”
As Butz explains, “I’m from Missouri, so I grew up on this stuff.”
Whether he’s singing one of his own songs and sharing that one of his daughters wrote the lyrics or blasting out something from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels or Wicked, it will be hard to say who has the better time—Butz or his audience.
by The Portrait Lab
Orange County welcomes the return of one of its own when Matthew Morrison returns to the Center. He was a member of the Buena Park Youth Theater and attended Orange County School of the Arts when it was located in Los Alamitos. Although most famous for his role in the television show Glee, where he was a teacher taking over the moribund glee club, he has many Broadway musical roles under his belt. He originated the roles of Link Larkin in Hairspray, Fabrizio in Light in the Piazza (for which he earned a Tony nomination), and J.M. Barrie in Finding Neverland. He’s recorded albums and appeared on dance reality shows in the UK.
And of course he’s great in a club setting. At a recent engagement at Feinstein’s/54 Below, his charm was palpable and the ladies were swooning. As theaterpizzazz.com put it, “He knows how to put on a damn good show! He sang top-notch bluesy renditions of classics from the musical theater canon and American jazz songbook. There’s simply nothing this man can’t do.” We couldn’t agree more.
