The Iconic Retreat

The 2024/25 Season marked my first full season as Artistic Director of Center Theatre Group, and I’m so grateful to everyone who joined us on this journey. Together, we began reimagining what CTG could be—with one collective season across all our venues that embraced bold, adventurous, inventive storytelling. Now, in my second season, we’re dreaming even bigger.

We are kicking off the 2025/26 subscription season at the Ahmanson with a show that is as fun as it is fearless: & Juliet. Featuring a catalogue of mega-hits by Max Martin— songs made famous by Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Kelly Clarkson, P!nk, and more—this Broadway smash flips the script on Shakespeare’s most iconic love story, picking up where the bard’s quill left off—or, perhaps, never dared to go. With a witty book by Emmy Award winner David West Read (Schitt’s Creek) and nine Tony nominations under its belt, & Juliet is the kind of joyous, genre-defying theatre perfect for summer in LA.

CTG’s mission is to serve the diverse audiences of Los Angeles by producing and presenting theatre of the highest caliber, by nurturing new artists, by attracting new audiences, and by developing youth outreach and arts education programs. This mission is based on a belief that the art of theatre is a cultural force with the capacity to transform the lives of individuals and society at large.

TO CENTER THEATRE GROUP AND OUR 2025/26 SEASON!

In October, the Tony Award-winning Jaja’s African Hair Braiding makes its West Coast premiere at the Mark Taper Forum. It’s a vibrant, funny, and moving portrait of sisterhood, ambition, and the American Dream set in a Harlem hair salon. And in November, dreams turn to nightmares when Paranormal Activity—a new theatrical experience based on the hit film franchise—takes over the Ahmanson.

This season our shows are filled with vivid larger-than-life characters that I hope will have you leaving the theatre inspired, buzzing with laughter, and with something to talk about long after the curtain falls. Thank you for supporting CTG and live theatre in Los Angeles. I have so appreciated your support this past year and look forward to dreaming big with you this coming season.

Sincerely,

& JULIET BOOK WRITER DAVID WEST READ ON REMIXING SHAKESPEARE AND MAX MARTIN SONGS FOR A NEW GENERATION.

In & Juliet, creator and book writer (and writer on Schitt’s Creek ) David West Read asks audiences to imagine a world where Juliet lives after Romeo dies, resulting in a heartfelt and funny journey on finding a second chance at love. Read spoke with us about the process of creating the show and what it means for Los Angeles audiences to see it now.

& Juliet is not only a continuation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, but it features songs written by pop music legend Max Martin. What was it like to write the book for a musical with existing characters singing songs from a variety of real-life pop stars?

DWR: I think one of the reasons I came up with the idea of continuing Juliet’s story is because we wanted to take Max Martin’s music and have it be heard by new audiences in new ways. The thought was, if we’re going to repurpose and reinvent Max’s pop songs, we should also be reinventing our story.

To me, Shakespearean times is about as far away from modern pop music as you can get, but at the same time, Shakespeare himself was like a pop writer of his day and creating art for the masses. So it felt like there was an interesting parallel between Max and Shakespeare. What does it mean for you to have & Juliet perform in Los Angeles?

DWR: It means a lot because I live in Los Angeles. The Broadway version started in Toronto [where I’m from], then went to New York, where I lived when I was starting out as a playwright. And now I live in LA and the show is coming to my home. I have so many friends in LA who still haven’t seen the show—

PRESSING ‘PLAY’ ON CLASSIC PLAYS

LYSANDER, HERMIA, HELENA, AND DEMETRIUS

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM

Enchanted to fall in and out of love with each other, these four lovers create Shakespeare’s most farcical love square. By describing a lover who doesn’t know what they want, Katy Perry’s “Hot N Cold,” written by Max Martin, is the perfect pop tune to describe this situation.

Most relevant lyric:

“WE FIGHT, WE BREAK UP WE KISS, WE MAKE UP”

KATHERINA “KATE” MINOLA THE TAMING OF THE SHREW

With her hot temper and sharp tongue, Kate scares off all potential suitors and is deemed unfit for marriage. This kind of woman must sing “Blank Space” by Taylor Swift, produced by Max Martin and fellow Swedish music producer, Shellback.

Most relevant lyric:

“GOT A LONG LIST OF EX-LOVERS/ THEY’LL TELL YOU I’M INSANE”

& Juliet puts the audience inside of Juliet’s head by demonstrating her feelings using music they already know and love, straight off the radio. By blending the worlds of William Shakespeare and pop music, & Juliet turns tragedy into Top 40. But why stop at the star-crossed lovers? Let’s press ‘play’ on more iconic Shakespeare characters and find out what hit Max Martin songs they would sing!

Most relevant lyric:

“WE WILL NEVER BE, NEVER BE ANYTHING BUT LOUD”

SIR TOBY, SIR ANDREW, AND THE SERVANTS TWELFTH NIGHT

After Malvolio judges these characters for their partying ways, the rag-tag team conspires to humiliate him. And since this crew of misfits is the often-inebriated comic relief of the play, they would certainly sing “Raise Your Glass,” which Martin co-wrote alongside the singer P!nk.

HAMLET HAMLET

Most relevant lyric:

“YOU COULD'VE ASKED ME WHY I BROKE YOUR HEART / YOU COULD'VE TOLD ME THAT YOU FELL APART”

The Prince of Denmark begins the play seeming completely devoted to his love interest, Ophelia. But as the story progresses and his lust for power becomes more important than his affection, he grows cold and cruel to her. By the end, he regrets treating her that way. “Save Your Tears” by The Weeknd, produced by Max Martin, takes on a whole new meaning when you consider Ophelia’s fate.

Most Relevant Lyric:
“YOU DRIVE ME CRAZY I JUST CAN’T SLEEP”

MACBETH

MACBETH

Driven insane from guilt after murdering King Duncan, Macbeth has nightmares and hallucinations. Since his wife, Lady Macbeth (whose theme song would definitely be “Bad Blood” by Taylor Swift) was the mastermind behind the killing, he would totally sing “(You Drive Me) Crazy” by Britney Spears, which Max Martin wrote in collaboration with a handful of writers.

MARK ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA ANTONY & CLEOPATRA

This toxic couple spends much of the play apart, but when they’re together, political turmoil runs even more rampant between their two homelands. It wouldn’t be surprising if Martin was inspired by the tragedy when he wrote the lyrics of “Tearin’ Up My Heart” by NSYNC!

Most relevant lyric:

“IT’S TEARIN’ UP MY HEART WHEN I’M WITH YOU / BUT WHEN WE ARE APART I FEEL IT TOO”

Most relevant lyric:

“BEING WITH YOU / IS SO DYSFUNCTIONAL”

BEATRICE & BENEDICK MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

These enemies-to-lovers don’t realize their attraction to each other until their friends conspire to make them see it. This trope, with plenty of playful negging that ultimately culminates in a love like no other, would be perfectly narrated by Kelly Clarkson and Max Martin’s “My Life Would Suck Without You.”

Most
“ARE YOU READY FOR, READY FOR / A PERFECT STORM, PERFECT STORM?”

PROSPERO THE TEMPEST

Exiled from his homeland, the former Duke of Milan conjures up the titular “tempest,” a storm that sinks his enemies’ ship. “Dark Horse” by Katy Perry featuring Juicy J is such a perfect song for this moment, it’s almost like Martin produced it just for Prospero. Can’t you just see him standing center stage, casting the spell while singing it?

Max Martin and William Shakespeare both tell timeless stories through their art, drawing on universal human emotions that anyone can relate to. It’s why these songs and plays remain hits today, and why Romeo & Juliet isn’t the Bard’s only classic that deserves a Top 40 twist like & Juliet. Who knows? & Cleopatra might not be far behind!

THE JOURNEY OF CTG’S NEW PLAY DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS

CTG’s New Play Development Workshops—revived postpandemic by Snehal Desai, Brindell & Milton Gottlieb Artistic Director, and under the guidance of Dr. Sonia Desai, Director of Literary and Dramaturgy—are a revitalized push to foster storytelling that heals, questions, and connects.

“CTG has had a really rich history of premiering new work,” Sonia Desai explained. “During the recession and the pandemic, like every not-for-profit theatre , it had to shrink. Now that we’re finding our feet again, we’re returning to our roots as a new play institution.” CTG’s recent recommitment to new work includes Fake It Until You Make It, written by Larissa FastHorse and directed by Michael John Garcés, which had its world premiere at the Mark Taper Forum on February 5th and was commissioned and developed by Center Theatre Group. In addition, since 2005, the LA Writers’ Workshop has invited a cohort of playwrights to spend a year researching and developing new works, receiving feedback from CTG’s artistic staff, as well as from one another.

CTG is currently implementing a series of developmental workshops and readings planned over the coming months. The first of these was the play Aya by Fernanda Coppel, which received a two-week workshop this past June.

Workshops are crucial to this mission and to the development process of a play. “The workshop is this kind of in-between space between looking at a draft on a page and then seeing a full theatrical production,” Sonia said. Over the course of the development playwrights, actors, and directors gather in a room to read, analyze, and rework the text. The process is rigorous and reflective, focused on both structure and substance. “It’s incredibly useful for writers because they get to hear the play out loud and also get a bunch of really smart brains looking at their piece,” she said.

Those “smart brains” include the actors, the writer, and the director who all play an integral role in anchoring the collaborative environment. “A director is always involved in these workshops because we need somebody who can lead the room,” Sonia said. “They help us imagine what the piece

looks like on stage. It’s not just about the words—it’s about theatricality.”

Casting also acts as an important part of collaboration. “The actors’ thoughts are valuable,” Sonia said. “We want to hear their stories and see how they relate to the arc of the character.” Coppel's play centers on Luis, a Hollywood figure who attends an Ayahuasca retreat in Peru to escape his crumbling life, only to confront deeper trauma instead. Other characters include Gloria, a healer at the retreat, and Nina, Luis’ ex-wife.

For Coppel, the story is deeply personal, as she has been working on it for ten years. “I started writing this play before I had ever known what grief really is,” she said. “COVID happened. My best friend passed away. I went through breakups. It’s been a really fun experience growing with the play.”

During the CTG workshop, Coppel embraced the power of simplicity and vulnerability. “Sometimes, as writers, we want to sound beautiful,” she said. “But healing is messy… maybe I don’t need this poetic monologue. The actors and director helped me breathe life into the play.”

Aya stood out to Sonia partly due to Coppel’s unique tonal balance. “Fernanda has this beautiful way of combining comedy and lightness with deeper issues. You trust her to go on the journey,” she said. “There are so many things you can work on, but the voice of the writer, that strength and uniqueness, is what you can’t teach.”

The staged reading of Aya marked the culmination of the workshop, featuring actors reading aloud from music stands in an intimate setting for CTG staff to watch how far Aya has come in just a week. “This is not about being perfect,” Sonia clarified. “No new play is perfect. This is really about: what is this play? What questions do you have about it? What feedback would be helpful?”

For Coppel, the process helped the words come to life off of the page. “Plays aren’t meant to be read well—they’re meant to be seen,” she said. “This is about an experience. You watch our protagonist drink the tea and hallucinate. You see them in all these vulnerable states.”

While a future production is not assured for these plays, the ongoing monthly workshops through the end of the year reflect the institution’s commitment to building meaningful artistic relationships. “We’re bringing artists into this family at CTG,” Sonia said. “We want to be that home for them.”

The story of Aya —and its journey from draft to stage—shows what the New Play Development Workshop was created to do. It’s a space for reinvention, reimagining, and radical empathy. As Sonia put it, “You get this kind of reflection of real life and storytelling and art all coming together. It’s so fun.”

And more!), please consider making a philanthropic gift to CTG in any amount today. POP STARS WHO’VE TAKEN ON THE BROADWAY STAGE

& Juliet melts the worlds of Pop and Broadway into an unforgettable night at the theatre where Juliet lives out her “Teenage Dream,” but the two genres often intertwine under the stage lights. Many pop icons have gotten their start on stage, while others have graced them later in their careers.

SABRINA CARPENTER MEAN GIRLS

(2020)

We may have only received a “Taste” of her Cady Heron, but Broadway fans will never forget Sabrina Carpenter’s iconic role in Mean Girls. Originally slated for 14 weeks, the “Espresso” vocalist had a “Short n’ Sweet” run due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, the shutdown allowed the songwriter to create her critically acclaimed album Emails I Can’t Send which forged her path towards pop stardom.

RENEE RAPP MEAN GIRLS

(2019)

We can’t mention Cady Heron without her Regina George! The actor/musician known for The Sex Lives of College Girls and debut album Snow Angels got her start on Broadway, replacing original company member Taylor Louderman as Regina George in Mean Girls Rapp was able to return to the role for the musical film adaptation of Mean Girls (2024) and is now focusing on her music career. What can you say, she just wants to have fun!

ARIANA GRANDE

13 (2008)

Look, it’s Glinda! The Oscar nominated and Grammy-winning singer/actor has dominated the world with her music and received critical acclaim for her performance as Glinda in the movie adaptation of the long-running musical, Wicked. But before the bubbles and the Grammys, Ariana Grande began in the theatre! Her big break came at 15-years-old in the Broadway production of 13, which held its pre-Broadway run at the Mark Taper Forum! Her success led to a leading role in the television show, Victorious and the role of Penny Pingleton in NBC’s Hairspray Live!, but she went on to “Break Free” from TV and began an immensely successful music career!

NICOLE SCHERZINGER SUNSET BLVD. (2025)

She’s got a confession...she was born for the stage! Nicole Scherzinger is most known for her iconic era as a member of the Pussycat Dolls, but the star has graced the theatrical stage a number of times in her career. She took on the role of Grizabella in the 2014 West End Revival of Cats, and later returned to the West End in Jaime Lloyd’s production of Sunset Boulevard, which received critical acclaim and transferred to Broadway, where Scherzinger won the 2025 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical! She wished for it, and she got it.

and now they have no excuse. I think theatre audiences are really savvy, and they see and consume a lot of pop culture. I think there are many “in-jokes,” references to both music and Shakespeare that I think LA audiences will appreciate. And, you know, LA is home to some of the biggest pop concerts in the world, so this is really the most pop concert musical you’re gonna see.

Is there a Max Martin song that resonates with you the most or represents you the best?

DWR: There’s a song that Max wrote specifically for this musical [“One More Try”] and I have a like 0.01% songwriting credit on it because I gave him one lyric. But that, for me, is always a thrill, because it’s such a bucket list thing to have, in a very small way, written a song with Max Martin.

Which lyric?

DWR: “I’m starting over with tears in my eyes.”

Los Angeles is also a big TV town. As a TV writer for Schitt’s Creek and Apple TV’s The Big Door Prize, do you feel there are differences between writing for TV and writing for theatre? And, if so, how do you approach those two mediums differently?

DWR: When people watch a [TV] show that was made 10 years ago, they watch it as something that was made 10 years ago. But when you’re watching a live show, it always feels like you’re seeing something for the first time—and you are. So even though I started writing & Juliet 10 years ago, the goal was to create something that would feel current and also timeless wherever it was seen in whatever language or whatever city. So that’s the biggest difference— trying to create something that’s universal, that brings together all different kinds of audiences and allows them to experience something that’s live and always new.

Is there anything from the early phases of the show that changed during the writing process?

DWR: We went through so many different workshops and presentations—from Manchester to London to Toronto to Broadway to tour—I made changes in every script. Max Martin has written probably 300 well-known pop songs, so you could make 10 musicals out of his catalogue. In those early workshops, we would swap in and out songs every time or try different mashups and see what worked. And that’s not something you can do as easily with a brand-new musical, because the composer has just written this song just for your show and they’ll burst into tears when you throw it [out].

Were there any songs that didn’t make the cut that you can mention?

DWR: I was really into Adele at the time. I was trying to get “Send My Love To Your New Lover” in just because it would increase the chances of her coming to the show. And it was just not working as well as we needed it [to].

Well, I hope Adele has seen the show anyway.

DWR: I hope she does.

Shakespeare’s plays challenge the gender binary so often that it almost ceases to exist. That’s one reason the character May is such a natural fit in the world of & Juliet, which explores a new story about what happens if Juliet survives her famous tragedy. There’s room in this show for people as spectacular as May, just like there’s room in Shakespeare’s plays and in the rest of the world.

A Soros Fellow and the recipient of a Tanne Award, Snehal was the Inaugural Recipient of the Drama League’s Classical Directing Fellowship. He has served on the boards of the Consortium of Asian American Theaters and Artists (Caata), Theatre Communications Group (TCG), and currently serves on the board of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT). Snehal was on the faculty of USC’s graduate program in Arts Leadership and is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

As a steward of The Music Center of Los Angeles County, we recognize that we occupy land originally and still inhabited and cared for by the Tongva, Tataviam, Serrano, Kizh and Chumash Peoples. We honor and pay respect to their elders and descendants — past, present and emerging — as they continue their stewardship of these lands and waters. We acknowledge that settler colonization resulted in land seizure, disease, subjugation, slavery, relocation, broken promises, genocide and multigenerational trauma. This acknowledgment demonstrates our responsibility and commitment to truth, healing and reconciliation and to elevating the stories, culture and community of the original inhabitants of Los Angeles County.

We are grateful to have the opportunity to live and work on these ancestral lands. We are dedicated to growing and sustaining relationships with Native peoples and local tribal governments, including (in no particular order) the:

• Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians

• Gabrielino Tongva Indians of California Tribal Council

• Gabrieleno/Tongva San Gabriel Band of Mission Indians

• Gabrieleño Band of Mission Indians-Kizh Nation

• San Manuel Band of Mission Indians

• San Fernando Band of Mission Indians

To learn more about the First Peoples of Los Angeles County, please visit the Los Angeles City/County Native American Indian Commission website at lanaic.lacounty.go
