THE DUX® BED

MASTERING THE ART OF THE BEDROOM 95 YEARS OF SWEDISH EXCELLENCE Since 1926, four generations of the Ljung family have aspired to produce the most comfortable and technologically advanced beds on the market. As a privately-owned family business, our only responsibilities are to our customers, to the integrity of our product, and to our commitment to sustainable thought and practices. Over the last 95 years our beds have been thoroughly vetted and tested – by the scientific community, but more importantly, by four generations of customers worldwide. The results are clear. We have a technology that works and the history to prove it.

In Memoriam: Ruth Ann Moriarty

Ruth Ann Moriarty (center) with Mark and Carol Perry (left) and Toni and John Ginger (right) at the 2017 Candlelight Concert

RUTH ANN SEGERSTROM MORIARTY passed away in January just two weeks shy of her 100th birthday. Ruth Ann was a cherished member of the Segerstrom family who lived an extraordinary and rich life. She was there alongside her younger brother, Henry, and the extended Segerstrom family, when the Center opened in 1986; she very generously supported the “Building the Vision”

Ruth Ann and her late husband Gene (left) with Henry and Elizabeth Segerstrom at the groundbreaking of the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall in 2003

campaign for the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall; and in December of last year she was one of the pivotal supporters to the most successful Candlelight Concert in the Center’s history. Ruth Ann was a longtime Center Star and generously supported many events and the Center Fund throughout her lifetime. The impact of her contributions and her commitment to the Segerstrom family legacy are visible through what has become Segerstrom Center for the Arts as we know it today. “The Center has lost a treasured friend,” says Judy Morr, executive vice president of the Center. “Ruth Ann grew up in an agricultural Orange County and was part of the county’s change to a diverse and thriving community. Key to the change was the Segerstrom family’s land donation which became the home of the Center, and we are most grateful.” She was predeceased by her late husband, Eugene (“Gene”) and is survived by her three children, Richard, Jeanne, Donald, and her many grandchildren.

How to Find True Love CAN YOU HELP who you fall in love with? In the 19th century-ballet Coppélia, a toy maker creates a beautiful life-size doll so perfect she appears to be real. So real, in fact, that a lad passing by sees her in the window and falls in love. His fiancé is not happy about this. He ends up feeling very foolish when he discovers the truth and renews his devotion to his real—live—love. But what about today, when materials and artificial intelligence can potentially be used to create a perfect person? Les Ballets de MonteCarlo returns to the Center in April with Coppél-i.A. Jean-Christophe Maillot, choreographer-director of the company, uses the Coppélia story as a base to explore the development of artificial intelligence. He asks the question: Is the ideal romantic partner really the flesh-and-blood creature we have always known? What happens when our actions are motivated by love of something that may not be what you think it is? Maillot has been leading the ballet company since 1993, when he was appointed by H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover. His ideas and style have often challenged audiences, and he likes that. Maillot uses a strong ballet technique “without being oldfashioned,” he says, mixing it with his contemporary sensibility. “My style is a very tiny border between ballet and contemporary,” he told The Guardian (UK). “It’s not a bland center ground, but a way of bringing a new energy, a new possibility to ballet. A way of melting the choreography so that it is more about storytelling than technique.” His dancers are equally comfortable in both dance slippers and pointe shoes. “I love to give to the audience a moment where there is a kind of reality onstage that has nothing to do with the reality in the world,” he told the Jerusalem Post. That is certainly the case with Coppél-i.A. It’s about a couple whose love is challenged by the appearance of artificial intelligence in the shape of a beautiful woman, and what happens when this new AI creature learns what

“I love to give to the audience a moment where there is a kind of reality onstage that has nothing to do with the reality in the world.” Jean-Christophe Maillot

lies outside the workshop. We are reminded that, just as humans will not always behave as predicted, we may face the same conundrum with robots. Unlike the original ballet’s creature, who is just a doll, Coppél-i.A. is a character in her own right. As she mixes in with humans, will she discover how to feel some sort of love? An obvious question is whether Maillot would prefer to work with an AI robot rather than a live

dancer. “I would be curious to see what it would be able to do; every choreographer dreams of the ideal ballerina who would perform their work perfectly,” says Maillot. “But I think I would tire of that very quickly. Such a ballerina could never have the emotions like the artists I work with every day. I need to create emotional ties that I am giving as much as receiving. I need to share ties of friendship with my dancers. I don’t think AI could ever provide that.” He continues, “Even if it were to happen, the art of choreography will always require a soul of flesh and sweat to personify emotions convincingly.” The original Coppélia score by Léo Delibes has been deconstructed by Bertrand Maillot, JeanChristophe’s talented brother, and mixed with Bertrand’s original music. With stunning costumes and futuristic scenery, Coppél-i.A. will be an exciting experience as Maillot gives a glimpse of our possible future.

Kids Go Live Spring Family Series presents three shows children will love

IT’S NOT JUST ADULTS who are excited to return to live performances at the Center. The Family Series has three shows in the spring that will give children thrilling experiences—in real life! Two of the Photo: Gorgeous Photography

shows will have sensory friendly/ relaxed performances. All Family Series performances offer pre-show activities in the lobby one hour before curtain time. It’s fun and engaging, so come early and bring your imagination, enthusiasm and lots of creativity! Secrets of Space Enjoy space-themed activities. Experience a journey to Mars with a special virtual reality experience that puts you in the driver’s seat of a spaceship. Create and launch your very own rocket with a hands-on activity led by our partners at the Columbia Memorial Space Center. And bring your biggest smile for an out-of-thisworld photo opp! Farfalle Join us to learn more about the life cycle of a butterfly with the Environmental Nature Center. Cenicienta We will have fun, engaging activities and photo opportunities exploring the themes of this show.

Secrets of Space takes us on a trip beyond our solar system with Suni and Mae, sisters who dream of discovering the secrets of space. Using magical illusions and a state-of-the-art LED wall, they take the audience on an interactive trip across the galaxy to explore the wonders of the cosmos using key ideas in science and technology. But it also encourages children to find their own space in the world and discover the dreams that have yet to be explored. Thebiglist.co.uk calls Secrets of Space “A flashy, visual, magical but above all thoughtful experience which extends beyond the facts of space and time into the heart of life and living.” Secrets of Space comes to the Center from Cahoots NI, the leading Northern Ireland professional theater company producing work for children. There will be a sensory friendly/relaxed performance on April 2. SAMUELI THEATER Dates: April 2 & 3 | Tickets: $20 and up

Farfalle is the Italian word for “butterfly,” just like the pasta shape. Farfalle is also the name of an interactive visual performance that follows the journey of a caterpillar as it morphs into a beautiful butterfly. An innovative use of dance, video, music and interactive technologies allow children to participate in many different ways. From composing songs with their feet to painting in the air, children will love this new experience that ignites all the senses. OneSuffolk Review (UK) calls it “A theatrical experience designed for the eyes, ears, knees … Images and sounds are created in real time,” by the audience and the performers. No one sits still for this performance! Farfalle, making a return appearance, is produced by Compagnia TPO, a renowned Italian dance group which creates visual, immersive theater for children. SAMUELI THEATER Dates: April 30 & May 1 | Tickets: $20 and up

Cenicienta is a modern, bilingual adaptation of the Cinderella story that tackles culture, family and the power of language. When her stepmother sends 10-year-old Belinda to the basement and tells her to get ready for a party, Belinda searches the trunks and piles of forgotten things to tell herself the story of Cinderella using puppetry and objects she has found around her. It’s amazing what can be created with a teapot, napkins and doilies and more! As she realizes she can embrace her love of poetry, Belinda discovers her self-worth and stands up for herself and her dreams, both as a person and as a member of her familia. The Austin Chronicle calls it “Captivating for children and adults alike,” and says “Cenicienta accomplishes what children’s theater should at its best.” This award-winning story-in-a-story production is from Glass Half Full Theatre of Austin, Texas. It works with performers from around the world to create original, multilingual works that employ a range of physical theater and puppetry techniques. There will be a sensory friendly/relaxed performance on May 14. SAMUELI THEATER Dates: May 14 & 15 | Tickets: $20 and up

THE CENTER BELIEVES that every child in our community should have the opportunity to experience the joy of attending a live performance. But for children on the autism spectrum or who have sensory sensitivities, theater performances can be overwhelming and even scary. In that light, the Center presents sensory friendly/ relaxed performances (SF/R) for selected shows in the Family Series. These performances are designed not only for individuals on the autistic spectrum, but for anyone that will benefit from a more relaxed environment at the theater. The Center works directly with the touring company to adjust any loud sound cues or startling lighting changes, without taking away from the quality of the show. The experience begins even before you arrive at the theater. Each SF/R show has a Pre-Visit Guide on our website that tells patrons what to expect. It includes pictures of the theater, ushers, seating, the performance story and more, so children can

familiarize themselves with what will happen when they come to a show and are not upset by anything unexpected. It is written in simple language that a child will understand. Once at the theater, there are pre-performance activities an hour before the show for parents and children to enjoy together. When it’s time for the performance to begin, patrons will find comfortable, spaced-out seating and aisles in the intimate Samueli Theater, allowing for easy movement if you find it necessary to leave your seats during the performance. The ambient light will be low throughout the performance to allow patrons to move around safely if needed. Talking in the audience during the show is welcome, and patrons can use electronic devices if needed to make them feel comfortable. If the

child wants to stand up and move around or even leave the theater that is fine, and if they become overwhelmed, there are designated spaces in the lobby to take a break and relax. There are also spaces for wheelchairs and mobility devices. If there is a problem, our ushers are trained to help individuals with sensory sensitivities and to ensure that each patron feels welcomed and safe, without fear of being judged or shushed. This spring, there are two Family Series shows that will include a SF/R performance for individuals with the developmental ages of 4 and up. On April 2, there be a SF/R performance of Secrets of Space. Two sisters dream of discovering the secret of space and take the audience on a trip across the galaxy while also encouraging children to find their own space in the world. On May 14, Cenicienta tells a modern, bilingual version of the Cinderella story. Belinda is sent to the basement and told to get ready for a party. Among the trunks full of forgotten things she finds items she can turn into puppets to tell a story, and in turn discovers her self-worth and how she can stand up for herself and her dreams. Both performances are at 10:00 a.m. For more information, please visit us at www.SCFTA.org/SFGuides.

DID YOU KNOW? For performances in Segerstrom Hall, Renée and Henry Concert Hall and Samueli Theater sensory-friendly bags are available for check out. They contain disposable ear plugs, a stress ball and noise-cancelling headphones for adults and children. The Center also has weighted lap pads available for check out. A weighted lap pad can help patrons with sensory sensitivity relax during a performance.

“SENSORY FRIENDLY” GETS A NEW NAME The Center’s Sensory Friendly performances have a new name. These performances are now labeled “sensory-friendly/ relaxed performances” (SF/R) as we move to the description that is now being used and recognized around the world. As you begin to see the usage of “relaxed performances,” know that they are the same low-key sensory environment that enables these children to enjoy a performance comfortably.

Tootsie Call it “musical comedy heaven” (Rolling Stone). Call it “the most uproarious new musical in years!” (The Hollywood Reporter). Call it Tootsie! This laugh-out-loud love letter to the theater tells the story of Michael Dorsey, a talented but difficult actor who struggles to find work until one show-stopping act of desperation lands him the role of a lifetime. Featuring a hilarious Tony®-winning book by Robert Horn and an outrageously clever score by 2018 Tony-winner David Yazbek (The Band’s Visit, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), this New York Times Critic’s Pick is “a joyful delight” (The Washington Post) that’s “so packed with punchlines, it should be called a jokebox musical!” (Bloomberg). “In these turbulent times, when the world seems out of balance, we need a place to let the good times roll,” raves Rolling Stone. “Tootsie is it.” Segerstrom Hall Dates: May 31 – June 12, 2022 Tickets: $28 and up

Center Highlights THE LEGENDARY CHAZZ PALMINTERI comes to the Center with his one-man play that started it all! Before it became a hit Broadway musical or a feature film co-starring Robert DeNiro, Palminteri wrote and performed his autobiographical story, A Bronx Tale, bringing 18 characters to vivid life in the gripping tale of a rough childhood on the Bronx streets. The Hollywood Reporter calls A Bronx Tale “Touching, strong, honest, extraordinary,” and the Los Angeles Times says it’s “A raucous tour de force.” At the age of 9, Palminteri witnessed the murder of a mobster in front of his apartment building. When the police questioned him, he denied that he had seen the crime. Palminteri turned this into a Broadway hit which was seen by Robert De Niro, and the two collaborated to turn the show into a successful film, with De Niro directing and Palminteri starring as the mobster Sonny, who he had met as a child. In 2018 this coming-of-age story was turned into a musical. From that long-ago childhood experience, Palminteri became an actor and went on to garner more than 50 film credits, including his Academy-nominated role in Bullets Over Broadway, The Usual Suspects, Analyze This and more. You will not want to miss this tour-de-force performance as Palminteri comes full circle with his original one-man show. RENÉE AND HENRY SEGERSTROM CONCERT HALL Date: April 2 | Tickets: $39 and up

ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S TOP COMEDIANS, Rita Rudner brings her sharp wit, droll observations and genius one-liners to Samueli Theater! In her famously soft-spoken delivery, Rudner kills with hilarious and true observations about the differences between men and women, marriage, kids, aging, Botox and, of course, shopping (her favorite pastime). Over the course of a 14-year run in Las Vegas, Rita has sold 1.5 million tickets to become the longest-running solo comedy show in Sin City’s history, winning “Comedian of the Year” nine years in row. Her comedy specials on HBO, Showtime and PBS have also delighted fans for years. And not content to keep em laughing on stage and screen, Rita is also a New York Times bestselling author, having written five books including Naked Beneath My Clothes: Rita Rudner’s Guide to Men and I Still Have it… I Just Can’t Remember where I Put It! Don’t miss this hilarious evening of entertainment! SAMUELI THEATER Date: April 7 | Tickets: $59 and up

THE BEATLES HIT THE USA in January 1964. Within weeks the American Pop charts were filled with British bands and the British Invasion was on. The U.S. had never seen anything like it, and that was the point. Pop culture was instantly transformed, re-vitalized and reinvigorated. The British Invasion—Live on Stage is an immersive multimedia show that will place you in the center of this iconic time in history. It was a golden age of pop music that changed the world and inspired a generation. There were boys with long hair, girls with short skirts, and in an instant music, fashion, art and literature would never be the same. The show focuses on the British music that dominated the charts then, and features a live band playing hits by The Rolling Stones, The Animals, The Zombies, Hollies, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Freddie and the Dreamers, The Kinks and more. Featuring huge-projection period photos and original film footage, the show recreates the Swinging ’60s, with its sense of teen rebellion. The band names may have been odd, but from “We Gotta Get Out of This Place” (The Animals) to “She’s Not There” (The Zombies), they had the hits that are still musical classics today. You’ll be “Glad All Over” (Dave Clark Five) when you relive—or experience for the first time—this exciting time.

With Our Thanks... French-born Michelle Rohé loves the performing arts: She is a subscriber to the Center’s Broadway and Dance series, and a fan of opera, dance and classical music. Her favorite instrument is the piano. She loves to play and loves piano concerts. In fact, Michelle knows that at the Center she will hear the best classical pianists on the best piano because she sponsored the Steinway piano used in Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. Although her primary residence is in Newport Beach, she also has homes in France and Belgium and enjoys traveling to Europe. To learn more about underwriting a performance or education program at the Center, please contact Elizabeth Kurila, principal gift officer, at EKurila@ SCFTA.org, or (714) 942-6275.

Jacob Collier: Pitch Perfect

JACOB COLLIER IS A musical universe unto himself. Have you watched his “Moon River” video? At times there are more than two dozen Jacobs on the screen harmonizing together. Collier brings his one-man-show to the Center for the Jacob Collier DJESSE World Tour. Collier is 27 and has won five Grammy Awards. Many of the videos he is famous for were written, performed, and produced in his childhood bedroom at the house in north London where he still lives with his parents. Online, self-described “weirdo” Collier creates his musical world by utilizing split screens and multiple soundtracks. Technology is the key to recreating this on stage. He worked with Ben Bloomberg at MIT Media Lab to make the hardware and software needed for a live performance. While he plays multiple instruments on stage, he also uses a custom-built “Harmonizer” instrument invented

by the two that allows Collier to perform the multivoiced harmonies seen on his Youtube videos. But his harmonizing ability is the real thing. Collier has what is called absolute pitch: a rare ability to recognize musical notes by ear. This enables him to sing a cappella with himself and hit the right notes every time. At home he was surrounded by music. His mother is a violinist, conductor and professor at the Royal Academy of Music’s Junior Academy. Collier grew up playing keyboards, drums, guitar and bass and his music is influenced by almost every type of music you can think of. “I love all music,” he told the BBC News. “It’s one massive language.” He has played with a wide variety of artists, including Coldplay and Pharrell Williams. “I’ve loved the experience of learning how to shapeshift my universe and incorporate different people’s styles.” He says the U.S. has really embraced his talents. “I did this one-man show surrounded by musical instruments, running between them all, and I think something about me having made my own universe and sharing it with people hit a nerve,” he told The Guardian (UK). Get your tickets and get your voice ready. As part of his energetic shows, he often conducts the audience to sing multiple-part harmonies with him!
