The term ‘cramp’ or ‘spasm’ is used to describe a sustained, painful and involuntary muscle contrac on. This can occur as a result of taking on a vigorous fitness regimen, a nerve entrapment or poten ally as a result of a metabolic disorder (e.g. fluid loss, low glucose, electrolyte imbalance, certain drugs, circulatory problems) in which case you may need to see your GP for blood/urine tests. If prolonged cramp is due to a new or increased training regime, ice, slow stretching and so ssue massage/trigger point therapy is useful. Potassium rich foods such as bananas and oranges and salty foods are recommended to replace mineral loss.
