High Days and Deadlines! Apparently, we’ve just had the ho est Easter since 1940... Usually, on a deadline weekend, Mary and I are to be found with noses to computer screens and ears to phones, chasing adverts and features; fran cally fending off the looming stress of ge ng the mag off to our faithful graphic designer Ali on me, so as not to miss our print deadline and thus avoid the catastrophe that would surely ensue if we did. But this me, for the first me since we started the magazine seven years ago, our deadline weekend fell on a bank holiday. So, on Good Friday, with the sun blazing down, we escaped and went on what we call “The Seagrave Walk”. We were looking a er Max for the week (my son’s Cockapoo) so we had a good excuse. “The Seagrave Walk” starts at the north west corner of Sileby Memorial Park and follows the footpath along through the village; the path used to finish a er crossing Heathcote Drive, and the last me we did the walk (shame on us—it must have been before we started Soar Valley Life) it was all countryside from there to Seagrave, about two miles further on. As we le ‘old’ Sileby, it came as a bit of a surprise to see how much Sileby has grown since 2012. Jenham Drive, the new Belway Homes estate at the top of Seagrave Road and running down to Ladkin Close, is the latest project. As a business we know first hand how much our area is growing; in Sileby alone we now deliver more than 3,900 magazines, it was a mere 3,488 when we started, and this is mirrored throughout the Soar Valley with an addi onal 20,000 homes to be built by 2030! Anyway, when we got to Seagrave and the lovely White Horse Inn, we treated ourselves to a pint of Cumberland Real Ale and the best cheese and salad bague e this side of the river Soar! See photo above... And, if you’re reading this, you’ll know we didn’t miss our deadline—VIVA BANK HOLIDAYS!

Nicky Morgan MP When I visit local schools to explain the work of an MP, or when I welcome schools to Westminster as I did with the pupils from St Winefride’s Shepshed recently, I say that my role is to be the bridge between my cons tuents and Westminster. One of the ways I do that is by arranging for cons tuents working on par cular issues or with par cular exper se to meet Ministers. In the last few weeks I’ve arranged for the Schools Minister to meet two cons tuents who teach school pupils (and staff) how to use a defibrillator as part of a life saving course. This is a skill that we all hope we may never need but it is essen al that, should the worst happen, we know how to use a defibrillator. I also took local farmer, Joe Stanley, to speak to DEFRA Secretary of State, Michael Gove. This followed the Secretary of State’s visit to the Charnwood area in February. Mental health has always been a big area of interest for me. As well as helping to secure the first ever general debate on mental health in the House of Commons in 2012 I helped to set up the Loughborough Wellbeing Café. The café operates informal weekly and monthly dropin cafés around Charnwood and has just set up a new café in Melton Mowbray. They also run the Emporium in Loughborough which raises vital funds to help us to reach more people in need of support and advice. Alongside the gi shop The Emporium has recently opened a tea room and can be found at 3 Ward’s End in the middle of Loughborough. Please do pop in and have a browse and a slice of cake if you are in town. Addi onal mental health care is vital for children and adolescents too. It is therefore welcome news that the Department of Health and Social Care is now releasing £8 million to build a new 15bed combined child and adolescent mental health services and ea ng disorder services inpa ent facility with a hospital school on the Glenfield Hospital site in Leicester. I know that this much needed facility will be well used.

Sweet Recipe Just Great Music!

Fresh Cherry and Almond Cake

Serves 8 Ready in: 1 hour 40 minutes, plus cooling me

This delicious fruity cake can be served warm as a dessert or cold as a classic a ernoon tea cake.

1

Preheat the oven to 170C, fan 150C, gas mark 3. Grease a 20cm round deep cake n with the extra bu er and line the base and sides with baking paper.

2

Place the bu er and caster sugar in a large mixing bowl and using a handheld electric mixer beat together un l very pale and creamy. Gradually pour in the eggs, bea ng well a er each addi on. If the mixture starts to separate slightly, s r in a spoonful of the flour.

3

Si over the rest of the flour and fold in gently with a metal spoon. Toss the cherries into half of the ground almonds, and fold into the mixture with the rest of the ground almonds. Spoon into the prepared cake n and gently level the surface.

4

5

Tip

Bake in the preheated oven for 55 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes, un l the cake is risen, golden and a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the n for 10 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack to cool. Whilst the cake is s ll cooling make the icing: si the icing sugar into a bowl and s r in 23 tbsp warm water and mix to make a thin icing. Spoon the icing over the warm cake, allowing some to drizzle down the side. Decorate with extra cherries and serve warm or cold. The fresh cherries will mostly sink during baking but this is perfectly normal, giving a moist fruity layer at the base of the cake. It’s best eaten within 2 days of baking.

Turning Heartbreak into Hope... Just Great Music!

Ge ng only 15% of their funding from Government bodies, Rainbows rely heavily on public, community and local business for financial help, without whom they could not exist. communi es and people they serve, and put some of their revenues back into local causes. Rainbows has dozens of businesses signed up to help by way of monthly direct debit. Our local Soar Valley Green Thumb Franchise, owned and operated by Mar n and Michelle Williams, have chosen to support Rainbows last year and this year by dona ng £10 for every new customer to the Hospice’s cause. Mar n said “Last year we launched our plans to help Rainbows before the long hot and very dry summer. Even though it was quieter for us last year we s ll raised over £1800. This year, especially if we have a more typical summer, we hope to raise even more. We do realise that, in the whole scheme of

things, our dona on might seem small against the massive amount Rainbows need to do their job to the very best of their abili es, which runs into hundreds of thousands of pounds every year. But as they point out very ably on their website: Every Gesture Ma ers, Every Penny Counts! We also believe it is important to let people know about Rainbows and that even a li le enterprise like ours can do its bit to help Rainbows’ cause; to bring a li le hope, when it must seem that all there is at mes is heartbreak.” Mar n and Michelle Williams’ Green Thumb franchise has been successfully caring for local lawns for nearly twenty years. In that me they have tended and improved thousands of local lawns, and every year they welcome hundreds of new customers to their excellent lawn care service. Mar n’s top p for a p top lawn is: ‘Prepare for dry weather this summer with a water management treatment for your lawn.’ To find out more why not give them a call for a no obliga on lawn analysis and quote. No Higher Rate of SDLT if Property Uninhabitable

Just Great Music!

Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) is a tax that is payable when land is purchased. Like most taxes, the rules are rather complex and there are some mes arguments between the buyers of property and HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) about the amount of SDLT payable. In a recent case, a couple who bought a derelict bungalow had just such an argument, which ended up in the First er Tribunal (FTT). They had bought the property for £200,000. It was uninhabitable as it stood and their plan was to demolish it and build a new house on the site. They formed a company to undertake the transac on.

When a second home is purchased or a company buys a residen al property, a higher rate of SDLT is payable. A lower rate of SDLT is due if the property is not a residen al property. HMRC took the view that the higher rate of SDLT applied to the property purchase, and the couple understandably disagreed. The law says that the higher rate is payable if the property is 'suitable' for use as a dwelling, and the property clearly was not. The FTT's response was to reduce the SDLT demand to the non residen al rate.

Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra These small domed, pedunculated or platelike growths are a type of Seborrhoeic Keratosis and, like them, tend to increase in size and number with age. They are very common on adults with black skin, tending to form in clusters or chains on the face, neck, upper back and chest. It is

es mated that up to onethird of people with Type VI skin are affected. There is a strong likelihood of a hereditary factor and there is some sugges on that they are caused by a defect within the hair follicles. Women are more likely to be affected than men. Like Seborrhoeic Keratosis, the lesions are benign and no treatment is necessary unless for cosme c reasons. If removal is required, the precision afforded by advanced electrolysis can normally

Special Events Calendar for May/June 2019 May: Eta Aquarid meteor shower is at its maximum on the night of 5/6 May and this year, with the Moon out of the way, should be good for seeing pieces of Halley’s comet flashing into our atmosphere. 19/20 May the moon forms a triangle with Jupiter (lower le ) and Antares (lower right). During the last few days of May Mars s ll holds sway in the evening sky but has compe on from Mercury as she roars above the horizon in the North West. Finally, you’ll catch Venus at mag – 3.9 very low in the South East, rising about 04:30 just before Sunup. June: Jupiter is opposite the Sun on 10th June (opposi on) with li le us in between. Although, because none of the planets’ orbits are circular, our closest approach is not un l 12th. Mercury is very low on the North West horizon at 10.30pm on 18th June and if you look through binoculars you can see the twin stars Castor and Pollux just above and Mars just below. 21st June at 16:54 pm is the Summer Sols ce longest period of daylight at 16 hours 38 minutes and 20 seconds. Ge ng you Moving We all see manual or powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters being used, but where do they come from? How do you get one? Un l you find yourself in a situa on that needs one, it’s not something most people think about; likewise, you may not be aware of local retailers, such as Bromakin in Loughborough. Buying the equipment that is right for you can make a real difference to your quality of life, giving you

freedom and independence. Whether spending a few hundred pounds on a secondhand scooter or inves ng thousands, you need to make a good purchase. Price is obviously a part of it, but so is the quality of service, the assessment of your needs and the warranty. Funding the mobility equipment can be expensive; however, some mes government organisa ons are able to contribute towards the cost. There are also local chari es that have expert knowledge of

benevolent funds and trusts in the UK that have money to assist people. Online reviews play an important role in helping you as a poten al customer decide whether to buy a product or service. Bromakin has lots of good feedback on Google & Facebook from their contented customers. You can contact sales@bromakin.co.uk or 01509 217569 for further informa on.

Leg Length Discrepancy Leg length discrepancy (LLD) is an issue in which the two legs are unequal lengths. Causes can be divided into 3 categories: • those causing a limb to shorten, • those causing it to lengthen • those that are caused by an issue above the legs e.g. a lt in the pelvis. There are a number of congenital growth deficiencies that can be the cause, the most common however is trauma, over use in strained condi ons and with more ac ve lifestyles misaligned hips. Common symptoms are waddling or uneven gait, pain in feet, ankles, top of legs and lower back. Whatever the cause, treatment to correct LLD and make the body more stable can be quick – chiroprac c alignment and use of ortho cs correc ng the difference and stabilising the feet. This in turn can reduce ankle, knee, hip and back pain. Self help is not advised. Uninformed choice of ‘off the shelf’ ortho cs may be detrimental – preferably consult with a professional!

Pa ents o en ask about heat/cold treatments so here’s a quick guide: For 2448 hours a er an ‘acute’ injury (e.g. a muscle strain) you should use a cold pack for up to 10 minutes. Cold treatments temporarily reduce blood flow and numb nerve endings to reduce sensi vity and relieve pain, swelling and bruising. Cold shouldn’t be used for s ff muscles or joints or areas with circula on problems. Always wrap a frozen item in a tea towel or similar otherwise this may burn the skin. Heat should be used in ‘chronic’ condi ons where muscles and joints feel generally s ff. Heat should be applied for up to 20 minutes (e.g. wheat bag or hot water bo le.) Leicester’s Oldest Charity? S ll Going Strong! As the nineteenth century rolled to its close a new charity to give joy to poor boys who’d never been to the seaside was born… Lady Rolleston of Glen Parva Grange, wife of noted architect of the day Sir John Rolleston, was a local philanthropist and o en invited poor children to her home for food and recrea on. In 1898 the mayor of Leicester, Alderman Wakerley, called a public mee ng, promoted by Lady Rolleston, to discuss a week’s holiday by the sea for boys who a ended the recently formed Poor Boys’ Club and Leicester Poor Boys’ Summer Camp Associa on was founded. At the August Bank Holiday, the

first group of boys went camping in tents on the sandhills at Mablethorpe, accompanied by Samuel Ellicock, who became the first chairman of the charity. Volunteers came from Leicester and the camp was opened by Lady Rolleston. In 1930 a purposebuilt holiday home to house boys and girls was opened on the sand dunes where the first boys had camped. By the end of 2017 more than 60,000 children had been provided with a holiday by the sea when sadly the home had to be closed because of rising costs. But this was not the end of the road at all. A new facility was found at Hill Top, in Sheringham, Norfolk and now

deserving boys and girls can s ll have a holiday by the sea and it is planned to provide hundreds of free holidays over the coming years. The Leicester home of the charity is in Sha sbury Hall, on the corner of Holy Bones and Vaughan Way, the opposite side of the road to the High Cross Shopping Centre. Sha sbury Hall was built in 1908 with the support of Lady Rolleston to provide educa on and recrea on to children in need. If you would like to help, volunteer, donate or just want to know more, take a look at their website at h ps://leicesterchildrens holidays.co.uk/

School may pause for the summer, but learning never stops. Everyone needs a summer holiday and, in our frene c modern world, family "down me" is more important than it's ever been. But with some pupils losing 2030% of their maths, reading and language skills from the previous school year, summer is also the perfect me to help your child to avoid ‘learning loss’ or to provide them with the support they need to catch up, if they've already fallen behind in certain subjects, well in advance of the new school year which will come around oh so quickly! Just an hour or two of onetoone tui on each week, away from the classroom, can make a world of difference to your child's confidence. We build a personalised programme and adapt our techniques to coincide with your child's individual needs. We are a local company, employing local tutors to help children at Key Stages 1, 2 and 3, GCSE, and A level, to be the best they can be at Maths, English, Sciences, Languages any subject. Great tutors always required. Call 01509 767007 for an informal chat, or see www.tutordoctor.co.uk/loughborough.

Snake bites Although adders are the only venomous snake in the UK, their

Page 48

presence can be a problem for dogs in the summer. Snake bites may cause swelling of the airways, organ failure and shock, as well as considerable inflamma on at the injury site. 3. Slug bait Some slug pellets contain a poisonous substance called metaldehyde, which can quickly cause serious health problems for pets if ingested. Signs of poisoning include vomi ng, seizures, tremors, and fits, and it’s crucial to seek help from a vet as a ma er of urgency. 4. Poisonous plants and flowers There are many common plants and flowers that present a serious summer health hazard for your pet. Lilies are par cularly poisonous to cats, and even the pollen can cause kidney failure. Other poisonous flowers and plants include foxgloves and lily of

the valley, which can both cause heart arrhythmias in animals. It’s vital to seek emergency help from your vet if your pet has been exposed to any of these hazards – speed is of the essence, and could ul mately save their lives. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk englandcambridgeshire 44208568 www.everydayhealth.com/ columns/everydaypets/scary summerpethealthhazards/

Your body responds by genera ng a protein called collagen. The collagen produc on, which can con nue up to three months a er the treatment will serve to ghten, li and counter laxity. Sags are ghtened and li ed, wrinkles smoothed out and the skin takes on a healthier more youthful appearance. Once the collagen has done its job, the ageing process and effect of

More recent is the realisa on that radio frequency can be extremely effec ve in isola on of surgery. No pain, no down me, with only four to twelve sessions required. High Intensity Focussed

Ultrasound (HIFU) is considerably more powerful and focussed. One treatment only is required for amazing results that keep developing for up to three months a er the treatment. Face peels and Intense pulse light treatments are par cularly popular and effec ve for trea ng rosacea and acne and permanent hair removal. We believe that a healthy body and mind is one where you are happy with the person you are. Medicines. These should always be checked to ensure you have a big enough supply including some spare just in case you have a delay on the homeward journey. They should always be carried in your hand luggage. Remember if the medicine is a fluid you will need a le er from your GP if in more than 150ml bo les. Take the real name of the medicine with you so it is easier to get replaced if lost.

Locks on cases. Please ensure that these comply with the TSA guidelines. If they do not and a security agent has to break into your case, they are not liable for any damage.

Tickets and documents. Most companies, including ourselves, make documents available around 21 days prior to departure. They are done at this me as it is less likely that flight mes will change other than in excep onal circumstances. However, you need to check that the documents are correct and what you are expec ng. We do check carefully before sending them out. With us, if it is invoiced then there is a voucher suppor ng that element.

Tracing Your Family History This time, back to the computer and use your preferred search engine to find the University of Leicester ‘Historical Directories’ website. Choose the appropriate county and you’ll see the publishers’ names, e.g. White’s, Kelly’s and the years available. When at your chosen directory, either enter a place or person’s name in the search box or trawl through the directory, page by page. But don’t think searching directories is only useful if your ancestors were in trade - you need to look with an open mind. You may not answer a specific query but you can read a contemporary description of the town or village where your ancestor lived. What follows the description varies according to the size of the community. Next time we’ll outline more details about the kind of information included but if you’re without a computer, remember historical directories may be viewed in record offices or libraries. The Loughborough group of the Leicestershire & Rutland Family History Society (LRFHS) meet on the third Tuesday of the month at All Saints Church, Thorpe Acre Rd, Loughborough, LE114 LF, open at 6.45pm with refreshments for 7.30pm start.

Short Story By Jackie Brewster Just Great Music!

A Bad Day for Brutus? “Look, there’s a sign for a country park,” Pauline pointed. “Let’s stop for ten minutes and let Brutus out for a ddle.” “A bit of fresh air will do us all some good,” Neil agreed, slowing down. They had spent the bank holiday weekend camping with Neil’s brother and his family, who were the devoted owners of Brutus the lurcher although not quite devoted enough to make room for him in their own car. Neil and Pauline luckily had a roof box for all their extra camping equipment so had Brutus riding with them. Brutus had an unfortunate habit of jumping out of vehicles, so they’d been driving for an hour with the windows shut. Brutus had also spent the en re weekend luxuria ng in cow fields so the air in the car was eyewateringly pungent. They drove towards the car park entrance. As they approached the barrier a young man in a baseball cap waved his hands at them, as though warning them not to go in. “Why doesn’t he want us to go in?” Pauline asked anxiously. “Do you think it’s full?” Neil drove on. “There’s always someone about to leave if you’re pa ent.” “I’ll ask him, he seems pre y insistent.” Pauline began winding down her window. “You never

Page 62

know, there could be a wild animal on the loose.”

Neil said, feeling queasy. “Should I go forward or back?”

“Round here?” Neil snorted at the sugges on. “Like what? A horde of rabid squirrels?”

“I’d try reversing slowly. It’s going to be nasty but at least you’re only going back over the bits that are already crushed.”

At the men on of squirrels, Brutus leapt through Pauline’s open window. “Stop, Neil!” Pauline screamed. “The dog’s jumped out.” “I can’t stop,” Neil said, “I’ve got cars behind me.” He regre ed his decision instantly. With a sickening bang, the car made impact with something large. Pauline shrieked. “We’ve run over the dog!” Neil slammed on the brake. The man who’d been waving at them tapped on Neil’s window. Neil wound it down. “Mate, I tried to warn you.” He shook his head. “I’d recommend you stay in the car. It’s pre y bad,” the man grimaced. “Not sure it’s retrievable to be honest.”

The sound of scraping and dragging vibrated through every nerve in his body. Finally it ended. “That’s it mate, you’re clear,” the man said, tapping the bonnet. “Do you want to get out and have a look?” Neil did not par cularly. He turned off the engine and climbed out. This was just the opportunity Brutus needed to leap back in, smearing muddy footprints all over Pauline and the upholstery. “He’s fine, he’s fine. Not a scratch on him. So what was that awful noise, Neil?” Neil was just discovering that the roof box he’d forgo en all about had been two inches higher than the car park height restric on barrier. Had been, but no longer was.

“A dream without ambi on is like a car without gas... you're not going anywhere.” Sean Hampton
