In the early years of the 20th century a new Wesleyan chapel was built at the top of Wash Lane in Ravenstone. As s ll happens today donors could have a brick bearing their name built into the walls.

Eight brothers and sisters of the Hewes family— which is Mary’s maiden name— each purchased a brick for the Wash Lane Chapel wall.

The Chapel was knocked down in later years as the Wesleyans merged with the Methodists and houses were built over the site. One of Mary’s Great­Aunts rescued the bricks bearing the Hewes name from the demolished chapel and with them she built a li le feature in her garden with a sun dial on top.

When she died Mary’s Dad took the bricks and re­ built the sundial with them in his own garden at Hugglescote, near Ravenstone. When he died, a decade ago now, Mary and I retrieved the bricks and I built them into our dry stone garden wall and waterfall.

On Wednesday morning this week (deadline week!) a delivery of building materials arrived for our extension. Part of the delivery was a large pallet of bricks wrapped in polythene with the maker’s name on the label. Yes, you’ve guessed it—they were from Ibstock Brick ­ the same make of bricks as the rest of our house and indeed most of our estate. Mary, seeing the name on the label, remembered her Great Uncle Fred and his siblings and that Fred had once been the senior partner of Ibstock Brick and Pipe. Never being one to look serendipity in the mouth, I fished out the bricks from our garden feature, asked our builder if he could build them into our new extension and, hey presto! a day or two later there they all are in their new home...

Use them sparsely, you only need a few per square meter. Alterna vely try using Nematodes, a biological control that is safe to use around children, pets and wildlife. Nicky Morgan MP As some Soar Valley Life readers will know, I chair the House of Commons Treasury Select Commi ee. As well as scru nising the work of the Treasury and financial services regulators we can also conduct specific inquiries into general issues.

One of our current inquiries is about access to financial services by vulnerable customers.

With customers expected to take more responsibility for their financial planning and resilience, bank branches closing, and the number of free­to­use ATMs falling, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for vulnerable customers to access certain financial services.

The two key ques ons that we are covering are: are certain groups of consumers excluded from obtaining a basic level of service from financial firms, and do vulnerable consumers pay more for financial products? If you have a view on this then I’d love to hear your experiences.

Last year I presented a pe on to the House of Commons on behalf of local taxi drivers about changes to private hire licensing rules which had meant rogue local authori es could licence far more cabs than were needed in their area, o en with lower safety standards, only for drivers to ply their trade in other areas whilst at the same me being effec vely immune to council checks. The Government has now announced changes that will see the adop on of na onal minimum standards for both taxis and their drivers; na onal enforcement powers for local authori es to check on drivers from other areas; and a na onal database of licenced drivers to ensure applicants are ‘fit and proper’ to take on the job.

Finally, I’ve been working with MPs from across the House of Commons to see that the issue of Myalgic Encephalomyeli s (also referred to as Chronic Fa gue Syndrome) is properly debated in Westminster. We wanted outstanding ques ons around the development of new NICE guidance, research funding and how children with ME are looked a er to be answered. On 24th January a debate in the main chamber finally took place. You can read and watch it via www.parliament.uk. Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts on this invisible condi on where pa ents o en have to fight to be heard. We will keep up the pressure on Ministers and the NHS.

Sweet Recipe Just Great Music!

Apricot & Orange Cheesecakes

Makes 4 Ready in: 40 minutes, plus chilling

Finish off a meal with these creamy individual fruity cheesecakes. You can make them a day in advance.

Place four 9cm ring moulds on a baking tray lined with baking paper (see p). Mix together the crushed biscuits and bu er and divide between the ring moulds, pressing down firmly with the back of a teaspoon. Chill for 30 minutes.

Place the orange juice in a small heatproof bowl and sprinkle over the gela ne. Microwave on the high se ng for 30 seconds then s r un l the gela ne has dissolved. Cool for 5 minutes.

Place the so cheese in a bowl and beat in the orange zest and caster sugar un l smooth.

Gently fold in the cooled liquid gela ne followed by the whipped cream. Spoon into the moulds and level the surface. Chill for 3­4 hours.

Tip

To make the topping, place the apricots and orange juice in a small pan and simmer for 5­10 minutes un l the apricots are so ened and nearly all the liquid has evaporated. Leave to cool, then process with a s ck blender to make a smooth thick puree.

Ingredients: • 125g diges ve biscuits, crushed • 40g unsalted bu er, melted • Zest and juice of a small orange • 2 tsp powdered gela ne • 250g full­fat so cheese • 25g caster sugar

Spread the apricot topping gently over the set cheesecakes and return to the fridge for at least 2 hours. To serve, run a knife around the edge of each mould and gently li away. Serve decorated with sliced apricots, berries and mint sprigs.

Beef quarter pounders A mouth­watering, meaty quarter pounder flavoured with a delicious blend of spices and seasoning

Serves 4 Time: 35 minutes

Preheat your grill to medium.

Grind the garlic, mustard seeds and salt to a paste using a pestle and mortar (or the end of a rolling pin).

Put the garlic paste in a large bowl along with the beef, onion, pepper, tomato purée, Worcestershire sauce and chilli. Mix well with your hands, divide the mixture into 4 por ons and shape each one into a pa y.

Put the burgers onto the grill pan and grill at the furthest point from the heat for 20 minutes or un l cooked through, turning halfway.

Reduce the heat if the burgers are cooking too quickly.

These burgers are delicious served in wholemeal rolls (Healthy Extra 'b' choice) with lots of salad and a li le fat­free natural yogurt.

Tracing Your Family History It is pure chance whether school records survive but, when they do, they may reveal interesting details about varied aspects of school life, from management to magazines, pupils to photos. A ‘day book’ might record temporary closure of a village school during a bout of illness – or for children to go potato-picking! Another entry might be about a child winning a scholarship place to a higher school. If registers don’t survive, you might find pupil names in an account book, showing the fees they paid. Local or county education committee records may record the tests used for scholarship places and the development of such schemes. Remember that 100 year closure limits may apply to specific types of record, which archive staff would explain to you. They may check for individual names on request.

One thing none of us want to think about is what would happen if we become unable to manage our own affairs. It is worth considering this possibility in a mely way. Those who are well prepared will have put into place a Las ng Power of A orney (LPA) at least for financial affairs, to make decisions about money and property such as paying bills, collec ng benefits or selling their home; possibly also for health and welfare decisions such as daily rou nes, medical care, moving into a care home or receiving life­sustaining treatment.

The advantage of an LPA is that you are able to choose for yourself the people who will have the authority to make decisions and take ac on on your behalf if you are unable. It gives peace of mind knowing that, even if you fall ill, your affairs will be handled properly by a person whom you trust.

Crea ng an LPA puts you in control. In addi on to enabling you to choose who will act for you, the process also allows you to clearly direct how your A orneys should manage your affairs through carefully documented guidance and restric ons.

It is important to make such decisions early because, if you are involved in an accident or have a sudden illness, it may be too late to understand the fairly lengthy forms and registra on process that are required to put an LPA into effect.

Girlguiding in the 21st Century

Girlguiding is the leading charity for girls and young women in the UK, empowering nearly half a million girls across the UK to be their best and face the challenges of growing up today. They’ve been doing this through adventure, friendship and fun for over 100 years.

Girlguiding has moved with the mes and has undergone the biggest ever overhaul in the charity’s history, revamping its iconic badges and ac vi es to create a programme for every girl.

Girls can choose to work towards interest badges such as Construc on, Vlogging, Media Cri c, Inven ng, Navigator, Anima on, Cra ivism, Mindfulness and Women’s Rights with other tradi onal ac vi es including First Aid, Survival skills, DIY, Money Management plus Campaigning skills. In total more than 800 new badges and ac vi es have been designed to equip girls and young women with the skills and experiences they will need in order to thrive, succeed, make change and be happy in the modern world. As well as being great fun for our younger members Girlguiding is also awesome for adult volunteers. Volunteering with Girlguiding is not just about campfires and helping girls to get their next badge ­ it's about empowering them and giving them new experiences whilst being a role model and helping them to realise their full poten al.

With units for all sec ons situated throughout the Soar Valley Life area then wherever you live we should be able to welcome you/your daughter to join us. Go Everywhere under the Sun with Kia Regulus in Leo Heralds the Coming of Spring me Regulus, the brightest star in Leo (the Lion), is now rising in the east a er sunset. You might not no ce it, but stargazers know that when Regulus appears in this way, spring is near. By early April, Regulus is well up in the southeast an hour a er sunset. By early June, it’s high in the southwest an hour a er sunset. And by early July, Regulus is low to the west an hour a er sunset.

Regulus is the only 1st­magnitude star to sit almost squarely on the eclip c, which marks the path of the sun, moon and planets across our sky. That means it can be seen from the en re Earth.

Bright planets some mes pass near Regulus, and every month the moon passes no more than about five degrees away. In some years, the moon occults (passes in front of) this star as seen from our earthly vantage point. In fact, Regulus just underwent a series of occulta ons – one during each month that this star was visible – star ng on December 18, 2016, and concluding on April 24, 2018.

1 Turn le from the churchyard towards Asfordby, around the corner to the bridleway signpost and go through the wide gateway marked ‘The Lilacs’; con nue through the gate at the end, by the yellow topped marker post. Carry on slight le through the metal gate and downslope with the hedge to the right. The ground starts to rise again with trees now le ; as the trees end (before Barn Farm) turn back to the narrow gate.

2 Go through and follow the path right, the path bears further right and meanders to a gate into a field. Keep ahead upslope to a yellow top post and turn right, along the path in the gap and up the le hand field edge. Go through the gate here and bear le , then turn le up the wide stony track to the road.

3 Cross this surprisingly busy road with care and turn le along the wide grass verge to the s le close to the house. Go over the s le and follow the path through the trees, con nue direc on between fences and along the right hand field edge with the hedge to the right, parallel to the telegraph poles.

Go through the wide marked gate at the far end to the s le on the right a er just 30yds.

4 Step over and take this lesser path through the trees, go over the s le at the end and turn le along the field edge with the trees to the le . Carry on across the road and along the next field edge to the s le, bear right with the wire fence and the trees to the le to a marker post. Bear right over this field, which may be under cul va on although a track should be well marked, to a hedge gap and cross the s le to the road. If for any reason this field is impassable carry on around the edge and back to the s le at the road.

5 Cross carefully and turn le to the gateway, go through and cross the s le in the hedge ahead; bear right across the field, a track should be visible through any crop and keep direc on through two boundaries. Con nue ahead through the corner of the trees to the stony farm track.

6 Turn right, for three quarters of a mile, through the dip and over the road, con nue ahead with the house to the le down into the dip and through the gate le of the trees. Carry on through the gate at the top and along the farm road between hedges, downslope le of Barn Farm to join the outward route at point 2. Ren ng Property Abroad We are o en asked about ren ng property overseas, par cularly when it is a family group who want to stay in one loca on.

Clients o en say they have seen a cheap property on the internet.

We are then asked if we can rent it for the client and combine it with flights and car hire into one booking. Normally we do not do this and I will explain why.

Anybody can post on the internet a property that may or may not be there when you turn up.

Recent television programmes have highlighted this problem with families le on the pavement with nowhere to stay or arriving to find another family staying there.

We also have to look at the safety of the property: are there smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and fire escapes in place? Personally, I recently looked for an Airbnb property for my own family in the UK for a significant birthday celebra on.

We looked at several and had to reject 85% of the proper es as they did not have smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. For me, anybody considering ren ng a property out without those very

basic items indicates a lack care and concern for the safety of the people ren ng.

For clients ren ng proper es overseas we work with reputable companies that have to conform to certain safety and property standards. Your safety is always our greatest concern as I am sure your families’ safety is your greatest concern. Yes, some mes this means a higher cost, but that’s be er than finding no property when you turn up or the whole holiday turning into a tragedy. Basically, a cheap property at peak me in a popular resort should be regarded as very suspicious!

What does the demise of FlyBMI.com tell you?

Actually, quite a lot: Booking flights on the internet might seem a cheap way to book. However, if it goes wrong then you are on your own. Yes, the credit card company will pay you back what you paid but only that sum. They will not reimburse you for the added cost to get home on another flight or by land.

Had you booked a package with an ATOL holder such as ourselves then it is our responsibility to get you back without extra cost. This is why we some mes will refuse to use certain airlines as we can see the risk involved.

Spring has finally arrived – but so have some unwanted guests Although we welcome the warmer weather with open arms, spring also means the re­ emergence of parasites that can cause severe discomfort for your dog, and are poten ally a serious health risk.

The danger of cks Ticks are small oval­shaped parasites o en found in countryside areas. They a ach themselves to a ‘host’ to suck their blood, and if not removed quickly can cause health issues ranging from serious irrita on to your dog’s skin to poten ally life­ changing Lyme disease.

Safely removing a ck The best way to remove a ck is to use a special ck­remover shaped for the purpose, which your vet should be able to provide. It’s important to twist the body before pulling it out, and to ensure the whole of the ck is removed.

Leaving behind the head can cause serious infec on in your dog, so if you’re not sure how to do it, take them to your vet.

Fleas Fleas are smaller than cks and can be very difficult to spot if your dog has dark fur. They can quickly mul ply to the point where your pet is constantly scratching, which can cause serious irrita on to their skin.

Your vet should be able to recommend an appropriate flea and ck treatment based on their weight, which reduces the chances

of infesta on and illness. The Easter Hedgehog “Derek, what are you doing out here at the crack of dawn?” Kelly, with a milk bo le in each hand, was surprised to find her husband hiding under the carport.

“Kelly, you nearly gave me a heart a ack!” Derek gasped. “What are you doing up?”

“Something’s been drinking the cream off the top of our milk,” Kelly said. “I have to bring it in as soon as the milkman’s been.”

“Just get under here quick.” Derek pulled her elbow.

“You’ll give the game away.”

“What game?” Kelly huddled next to him.

“Opera on Soak The Easter Bunny,” Derek smiled, rubbing his hands together.

“You mean soak Carl?” Kelly sighed. “Honestly, when are you two ever going to grow up?”

Derek and his brother­in­law Carl had a long history of playing prac cal jokes on each other. At Christmas Carl had decked Derek’s conifers in toilet roll, and on Valen ne’s Day Derek had filled Carl’s van with balloons. Derek knew a revenge a ack was overdue.

Kelly hugged herself to keep warm. “How can you be so sure he’s coming today?”

“Because the man’s an idiot,” Derek smirked. “He’s been dropping hints that I would be ‘hopping mad’ at Easter, and yesterday I spo ed him coming out of the fancy dress shop in town with a pink rabbit suit under his arm.”

“You think he’s coming as the Easter Bunny?” Kelly laughed. “This I’ve got to see.”

“And what’s that mask he’s wearing all about?” Derek whispered. “It’s all brown and spiky.”

“It’s a hedgehog mask.” Kelly frowned. “Perhaps his Easter Bunny costume didn’t fit?”

The strangely dressed figure scurried under the washing line and stepped onto the booby­trapped lawn. Derek de ly turned on the tap.

The hosepipe gurgled and the sprinkler system hissed into life. Their visitor leapt into the air like a startled cat as thousands of icy jets shot up his dressing gown.

Derek and Kelly howled with laughter. Holding his hedgehog mask onto his face, Carl sprinted right past them and back through the gate.

A familiar voice behind them said, “What are you two cackling at?”

“We’ve just given Carl the fright of his life,” Derek laughed, and turned to find Carl, dressed as a pink bunny carrying a tray of eggs.

“But I’m ready for him,” Derek chuckled. “I’ve rigged up the sprinkler system on the lawn to full power, and I’ve got my hand on the outside tap. Hang on, someone’s coming through the gate now.”

“How did you get changed so quickly?” Kelly gasped.

“Where’s your hedgehog mask?”

Derek and Kelly held their breath as a dark figure crept along the path beside them.

“So, who was that?” Kelly clutched her milk bo les to her chest, and a thought occurred to her. “You don’t suppose he’s the one who’s been guzzling the top off my milk, do you?”

“I thought you said he was coming as the Easter Bunny,” Kelly whispered. “He’s wearing an old brown dressing gown.”

The Ivanhoe Model Railway Society Having started as the Rolls Royce Mountsorrel Railway Club in the 1960s, their last exhibi on was held in the early 90s in the canteen of Rolls Royce Mountsorrel.

Rolls Royce closed and was demolished in 1994 and the club became homeless un l a local farmer provided some accommoda on, situated quite close to the Midland Mainline near Loughborough. The Ivanhoe Line between Loughborough and Leicester had recently opened for passenger service and so the Ivanhoe Model Railway Society evolved.

We have held diecast, toy and train fairs at many local venues over the intervening years and use the Rothley Centre. The Society thought it would be a good idea to bring the old show back to life in the village where we started…

The Mountsorrel Model Railway Exhibi on will be held on Saturday and Sunday the 13th and 14th of April, 2019 in the new Memorial Centre, Leicester Road, Mountsorrel, Leicestershire, LE12 7AG. Opening mes are from 10am un l 4pm each day.
