It’s that time of year again, and it seems to get here quicker and quicker every year. I’ve been told that it has to do with getting older. While that may be true, I’m more inclined to believe it has a lot to do with being active, having a lot on your plate, and doing what is necessary to stay competitive. Regardless, on behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of your Chamber, we hope you have a terrific holiday season and a great start to the New Year. Speaking of staying competitive, one of the ways your Chamber stays on top of its’ game is with the reinvestment of its’ members every year. Quite frankly, we want you, we need you and we hope that you see exceptional value for your business’ investment in the Chamber…and what a value it has been! The Chamber hasn’t altered its’ membership investments since 2004…which is good news and bad news. The good news is that you’ve been able to write the same check every year; the bad news is that the cost of doing business has gone up. At its annual planning session this past August, I proposed a new chamber membership alignment structure to the Chamber’s Board of Directors. It’s a membership structure that starts ALL members out at one basic level. In the past, we’ve had as many as twelve membership categories and depending on your business, you could pay anywhere from $165 per year to $6,000 per year, and any of the events or programs we put on were on top of these membership investments. The new membership structure provides you, the member,

the ability to choose your level of participation in the Chamber in return for specific benefits and events inclusion at each level. What it will mean is that all base memberships that have been at the same $165 level since 2004 will be $200 starting January 1, 2011. If you are one of our hundreds of members who buy sponsorships, tickets, enter golf teams or other products and services that the Chamber offers, you will have an opportunity to convert your annual membership to one of five levels above the Basic Business membership level. It’s strictly voluntary, but you’ll find membership pricing levels that will ultimately end up saving you money. If your membership investment renewal notice has been received at your business or organization, please take a few minutes to reinvest for another year; it’s one of the best ongoing investments that you can make in your business, and we are constantly striving to make it even better.

Fall is here! And so are a lot of other great happenings in Kerrville! Leaves are turning; women are exchanging summer clothes for winter ones in their closets - can the holiday season be far behind? Trick-or-Treat and Thanksgiving are behind us, with Christmas coming up before we know it - one of my favorite times of the year. Our thoughts will soon be turning to shopping for everything from Christmas decorations, Christmas dinner fixin’s, to gifts for under the tree. When these ‘shopping’ thoughts start popping into your head, I’d like to ask you to focus on ‘Shopping Kerrville’. I’d like to ask you to develop pride in shopping here ‘first’. You’ll still have plenty of time to get that special item at the Rim or La Cantera that you just can’t find here...yet. When you ‘Shop Kerrville’ with pride, I bet you can find lots of unique things made by local artisans, cars, trucks, shirts, blouses, jackets, bikes, toys, slacks, or shoes, that are pretty close, or exactly what you’re looking for...or they can get it for

you. I’m sure you know people or have friends or family that own, work for, or supply local businesses. Develop pride in helping them. Dollars spent here create sales taxes that the City uses for a multitude of operational needs. Buying locally creates a demand for products and services that will help us retain and expand our current businesses, and create an environment to help attract new businesses. The new and expanding businesses will need to build additional space and new buildings, which create ad valorem taxes. These new taxes help the City, the County, local school districts - and you - by keeping your tax rates down. We already have great pride and patriotism in our nation and our state. Let’s all work together to develop or grow our community pride and patriotism by’Shopping Kerrville’.

10 | December 2010

With the end of the year just around the corner, get your 2011 off on the right foot by reinvesting in your Chamber, and as the year progresses, get involved and reap the rewards of Chamber membership…now that’s PRICELESS!!

Nine Tips to Help Your Business Succeed in Transition

aking stock of your business and determining how you will deal with the many contingencies that can occur is the equivalent of the ounce of prevention mentioned in the old English proverb. Last month we looked at 5 “Inside Issues” to consider in business succession planning. They were: (1) identifying the key people in your business and what your long term goals are; (2) determining how decisions will be made and how authority in your company will be shared / transitioned; (3) contingency planning in the event of the death of a “key person”; (4) preparing for the impact of divorce, bankruptcy and/or disability; and (5) providing an exit strategy in the event of a deadlock among owners. This month we look at the final 4 “Outside Issues.” 1.) Seek out qualified advisors. An experienced attorney and accountant bring a wealth of knowledge to the table and can provide you with many ways to achieve your goals. There is no “one size fits all” strategy for business succession planning, but there are many proven avenues you can travel. Don’t be shy about telling your advisors what your budget is. Most will work with you to develop a plan that takes both your goals and your budget into consideration.

2.) Decide what type of entity is the best fit. There are no less than 10 different business entities available to choose from in Texas. Each has benefits and limitations. Limited liability companies are the most popular and provide a tremendous amount of flexibility. 3.) Shareholders as employees. Many successful businesses rely on a key employee or two for its success. Offering those key employees an ownership stake in the business is a proven strategy to keep them employed and motivated to continue investing in the company’s success. If an employee becomes a shareholder, it is a good idea to have a well-written employment agreement. Spell out the employee’s duties, salary and benefits. Include objective criteria for continued employment. Then, tie the employment to ownership of the stock. If the employment agreement is terminated for any reason, then a sale of the stock is triggered (or not) depending on one’s particular circumstances. 4.) Valuation. Fairly valuing a business (and each owner’s interest in it) plays an important role in the transition of a business. Set the value too high and you punish the buyer, which in many cases is the business itself. Set it too low and you

LEGAL

punish the outgoing owner. Strategies used to value a business include requiring an appraisal, using a formula to arrive at a fair value, or periodically setting the value of the business by agreement. Business owners work hard to achieve and sustain success. Smart business owners protect that success by planning for contingencies. Investing the time, energy and resources to develop one’s own “ounce of prevention” can pay big dividends down the road.

BUSINESS BAROMETER 30 years ago a few holiday minded residents decided to start a tradition in Kerrville. They decided the courthouse square needed to be a gathering place and should be decorated with lights in honor of the Christmas season. These men and women couldn't have known what their efforts would become. What began as a small community group effort has now turned into one of the states largest holiday events. Today the Kerr county courthouse is adorned with more than 100,000 lights and the annual event is attended by thousands of people each year. The weekend before Thanksgiving each year, central Kerrville becomes THE place to be in the Hill Country. Beginning at noon on Saturday the town comes alive with the opening of the Main Street Hill Country Holiday Round-Up. Live music, food, and a festival of family activities starts the day. At 6:00 p.m. the annual Holiday Lighted Parade comes through town with nearly 100 lighted floats (one of the largest lighted parades in central Texas). Following the parade, the crowd gathers at the Kerr County courthouse to watch the lighting ceremony and count down to help us throw the switch to light up the courthouse. Decorating a county courthouse doesn't just happen overnight. Lots of planning, fundraising and vision must come into play. The Kerrville Christmas Lighting Corporation, a small group of local citizens are reaponsible every year for raising the funds and spending the 4 weekends leading up to the lighting wrapping trees and hanging the 5 foot-tall wreaths around the courthouse. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of this small group, the citizens of Kerrville get to enjoy a season filled with lights and warm Christmas cheer. If you would like more information about any of the segments of this special day in Kerrville, please contact the Kerrville Main Street office at 830.792.8395.

HOLIDAY The Gift That Keeps on Giving

By Dr. Zach Sumrall & Dr. Cori Sumrall

Maintain a positive state of mind. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Take a short half hour walk. Stay off of the scale. Munch on snacks that are high in fiber such as peanut butter, oranges, strawberries, oatmeal and green beans. Can you determine the common factor in all of the previous statements? If you guessed that each is a solution to holiday overeating and weight gain, you are absolutely correct! Holiday overeating is something that affects us all. It is imperative to understand this potentially dangerous trap we are all prone to falling into. According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Americans who are of average weight tend to gain 1 pound between Thanksgiving and New Years. This one pound tends to not go away and eventually increases slowly overtime. Uncontrolled consumption of food in discrete intervals, often brought on by a lack of control over the situation, is 26 | December 2010

binge eating. Eating foods in excess that you would normally avoid is also a factor in overeating. Overeating

RICH FOODS

stretches your stomach causing a sensation of hunger urging you to eat continuously. Nonetheless, there are,

with this downfall, simple solutions and recovery tips that can keep you healthy, thin and happy for years and holiday seasons to come! Overeating is often brought on by the seasonal chaos of running here and there and eating what is set out before you at family and friendly gatherings. For some, over eating can come about from sadness or exhaustion the holiday season can provoke. Having a lack of time and energy may lead to a quick, unhealthy fix that leads to the subtle weight gain. Ways to solve this problem are simple! Don’t skip breakfast. Build meals that are low in caloric intake but high in volume. Drink at least 16 ounces of water before meals to enhance your metabolism significantly. Eat lean protein foods with each meal. A few lean protein food examples include tuna, salmon and other coldwater fish, low fat dairy products such as Swiss, cottage cheese, mozzarella, and low fat milk. Eat fiber continuously throughout the day. Some common foods that

Special coverage

are high in fiber are pistachios, coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice, dark chocolate, broccoli, pinto beans, almonds, sunflower seeds, pears, pumpkin, carrots, apples, bananas, and avocado. These fiber rich foods will prevent you from overeating this holiday season. The weight gain from the holidays tends to stick around and grow throughout time. Take your gift of weight gain this upcoming holiday season and swap it out for a new bill of health. With your newfound knowledge of weight gain and overeating tips, turn your gift into a positive one that you can share with others. Receive and give continuously without fail for years to come. Let healthy holiday eating be the gift that keeps on giving in your life from this moment forward. An Interview with Dr. Valerian Chyle

Story by Mary Lee Gowland | Photography by Aaron Yates

In our modern society we often hear that many doctors have lost their “bedside manner. This is certainly not the case with Radiation Oncologist Dr. Valerian Chyle (pronounced kee-la), whose boyish good looks and easy laugh make one feel immediately at ease.

mykerrville.org | 31

is journey to Kerrville began in River Park, North Dakota where he was raised on a “cold, windy” farm. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry from St. John’s University in Minnesota, at the time an all-male college. (St. John’s Abbey is the largest Catholic monastery in the world). At UCLA medical school he planned to train to be a primary care physician. But at the time there was a big push to specialize and he wondered if the “big net” of primary care might hinder him from offering each patient the detailed attention that he desired to deliver. He spent

32 | December 2010

two weeks in the radiation oncology department and “fell in love with it.” This would allow him the close patient contact he wanted, working in a field that was making huge advances in technology. While a fourth year medical student in Los Angeles, he made his first trip to Texas to spend one month in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Dr. Chyle was fortunate to be selected as one of the four residency candidates to enter formal radiation oncology training at MD Anderson in 1991. He and his wife moved to Houston expecting to garner an education and then move back to the West Coast. By the completion of his graduate medical training in Texas, the West Coast had lost its appeal and they desired to remain in Texas. Dr. Chyle wanted to practice in Texas but opportunities in Texas

were scarce, so he took a position in Memphis and was there two years. Then he received an invitation to be an Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Although he enjoyed teaching young resident doctors, he longed for the close patient contact that he could find in a community practice. In 1999 he began his own practice in Williamson County where the Chamber of Commerce helped him promote his practice. “Everyone in the medical profession knew each other personally. Rather than wade through pages and pages of patient records we could converse with each other and know, within five minutes, what our patients needed.” It was a low stress environment in which to practice. But then a population explosion occurred and the small town feeling was lost. In the meantime, Dr. Chyle and

his wife, Mary, a medical attorney had purchased land in Leakey, twohundred miles away. When the opportunity to work with Dr. David Jones at Hill County Center for Cancer Care in Kerrville opened up, only sixtyfive miles from the ranch, he jumped at the chance to have a small-town practice again. Dr. Jones opened the facility in 2005 with the goal of providing state of the art cancer care to Hill Country residents close to their home. “The larger the system, the slower the treatment,” he says of large-scale medical facilities. ‘”In Kerrville I have a lot of contact with my patients. I know them well, their lives, their families, and can communicate directly with them. The local physicians are welcoming and take great care of their patients. Plus, Peterson Regional Medical Center which opened the year before I arrived, is a state-of-the art facility and a great place to get care.” He believes that the Chamber of Commerce is doing a great job, especially with newcomers, in letting residents of Kerrville know that they don’t need to travel all the way to San Antonio for good health care. His personal involvement with the Chamber has been helpful with getting integrated with his new community. “At HCCCC we have a CT Scanner which creates a virtual 3-D patient that enables us to create a precise treatment plan; and a linear accelerator which delivers custom designed radiation treatments. Everything is first done on the computer, virtually, where we can further refine and be precise. In the old days it took many people and hundred of hours to do these complex calculations. Nowadays we have earlier detection. More people are cured. More can return to their lives.” Mary Walker-Chyle has retired from her legal practice to manage their working ranch - “meat goats, a donkey, two dogs and ten barn cats” –and Dr. Chyle is doing what he loves best, treating his patients at The Hill Country Center for Cancer Care. We’re glad he’s here.

COWBOY B-FAST Y’all grab your hats & boots and come on down for the 7th Annual Hill Country Cowboy Breakfast!!

There may not be such thing as a free lunch, but there is such a thing as a free breakfast! The Hill Country Cowboy Breakfast started in 2004 as a way for the community to come together to kick off the 5th largest stock show in the state of Texas, the Hill Country District Junior Livestock Show (HCDJLS). This year, Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union and Hill Country Telephone Cooperative are teaming with the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce, Kerrville Downtown Business Association, and HCDJLSA to bring you the 7th Annual Hill Country Cowboy Breakfast. The Cowboy Breakfast will be held on Friday, January 14th, 2011, from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. at the courthouse square in downtown Kerrville. It is FREE to the public and breakfast is served by our local 4-H and FFA kids. Come enjoy a hot cup of coffee from Hastings Hardback Café, a delicious homemade sausage wrap, and bust a gut at the entertainment. Thanks to the donation of milk goats again this year from Nuluv Nubians of Center Point, you’ll probably see your banker knelt down underneath a bleating goat trying to milk her as fast as he can…or the Mayor tossing a big ole’ cow patty towards a tin bucket, trying to beat out the other local elected officials as to who can ‘throw the bull’ best. This year, County Judge Pat Tinley is issuing a challenge to his counterparts

in Gillespie, Kendall, Real, Edwards, Kimble, and Bandera Counties to join in on the Cow Chip Toss contest. And don’t get wiped out by a frozen turkey headed your waythat’s just Hill Country Radio Turkey Bowling, an event sponsored by our local radio stations: The Ranch 92.3, Classic Rock 94.3 REV FM, and The Rose 99.9. To the delight of event organizers, Opa’s Meats of Fredericksburg has pledged to provide the sausage links this year, with Mamacita’s once again providing their delicious tortillas. If you are interested in supporting our local 4-H and FFA’ers by donating to this event, come join us for breakfast and bring a little pocket change with ya…100% of donations go directly back to the kids through the HCDJLS Association Scholarship Fund. The Cowboy Breakfast is a fun filled event for people of all ages! For more information on the event, call the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce at 896-1155 or visit www.hcdjls.org/. And don’t forget to wear your long johns! See y’all there!

CORE

A common refrain heard in Kerr County is that there is nothing for kids to do. Many young people have a busy schedule, though, with youth sports, fine arts, or religious opportunities. These kids think, “So much to do, so little time.” But many young people in Kerr County say, “There’s nothing to do!” That groan is likely to come from a young person who hasn’t yet discovered, or for some reason can’t access, the activities he or she would really enjoy. The key is to help young people strike a balance between unstructured activities and structured ones. Activities for young people should involve learning, developing new skills, using their creativity, being with other caring youth and adults, and interacting with their families and friends in positive ways. Some keys to constructive use of time are: • Balance is essential. Strike a balance in your young person’s “busyness”. • Young people need opportunities to play and be creative. Not all activities should be driven by an adult: “free play” is important. • Different young people need different things. A broad cross section of activities needs to be available, from athletics to the arts. Let your young person try what interests him or her. • Adolescents want and need to “try on” different ways of being. A young person who feels out of place in school may excel and be a leader in a less traditional setting. Activities outside of the school setting can build a sense of competence and confidence. At UGRA’s regularly scheduled Board meeting, VicePresident, Karol Schreiner, presented each volunteer with a certificate of appreciation. Each summer, UGRA tests E. coli levels at twenty-one popular swimming holes throughout Kerr County. E. coli bacteria is an indicator of water contamination and is used to assess the risk of contracting a water borne illness while swimming. In 2004, UGRA

began the Volunteer Summer Study Program to supplement water quality data collected by UGRA staff. Interested members of the community volunteer to collect water samples for bacteria analysis at a location of their choice. The program not only encourages the participation of local citizens in water quality testing, but the information collected by the volunteers helps identify areas in need of further investigation. This summer UGRA was assisted by 22 volunteers who collected 283 samples at 25 locations throughout Kerr County. “UGRA commends the

BUSINESS TIPS

Presented by Massey Itschner and Co., an 14-member local CPA firm providing tax, accounting, audit, personal financial planning and business consulting services and RA You’ve got your website up and running and it’s just what you wanted. Now the question is; how to get people to visit it? There’s a lot you can do to get visitors to your website other than using the usual search engine optimization techniques like metatags and subject words in your website pages. These ‘other’ ways are mostly little things, but collectively they can add up to a substantial increase in traffic and give you more of what you want – customers for your business.

1. Put the website address on all stationery materials

Do a comprehensive search of everything you have in the way of stationery that could carry your URL. A partial list of typical business stationery would include: business cards, ‘with compliments’ slips, letterheads, envelopes, brochures, product packaging, sales literature, media releases, fax cover sheet, e-mail signatures, order forms, invoices

2. Deals on wheels – and elsewhere

Every vehicle in your company is a mobile billboard. Put your business name and Web address on magnetic signs or vinyl stickers and put them on your cars, vans and trucks. This not only promotes the website, it conveys an impression of the business being technologically up-to-date. Work clothes are a natural place to put a Web address. That can extend to safety items like protective helmets, to work items like toolboxes, and large pieces of equipment such as compressors

and bulldozers, and to casual clothes like T-shirts and baseball caps.

3. Don’t forget your website address when listing in directories

It’s amazing just how many advertisements in the Yellow Pages or newspapers don’t show a Web address. Many people, perhaps you do it yourself even, first find a company’s ad that appeals to them, then want to check their website to get more information before making contact. Advertisements in newspapers, magazines, on billboards and on TV can easily carry your Web address. Take every opportunity to get it in front of the world, especially when you’re paying for the privilege of advertising your other contact information already.

4. Leverage the value of business contacts by exchanging links

Look for the sites of businesses that are complementary to yours, or who you deal with, and contact them about adding a link to your business from their site. Naturally you would agree to reciprocate if asked. If you make hot dogs find someone who makes hot dog buns and help each other build business.

5. Newsgroups offer a marketing channel

If you haven’t already heard about newsgroups you’ve missed out on one of the internet’s major sources of information. There are thousands of newsgroups on just about every

subject imaginable. For example, if you search the topics under ‘Microsoft’ you’ll find at least one newsgroup and often several for every product the company makes. These newsgroups are great sources of knowledge about using some of the more complex features of programs as well as fixes for common problems. Do a search for newsgroups related to your own business and when you find an opportunity to join the discussion, by providing advice on your area of business activity for example, make your contribution and put your Web address in the email signature.

6. Answering the call

Most businesses have an answering machine with a message that can easily carry the Web address as part of the script. Your voicemail on both the business landline and cell phone can also incorporate your Web address. “This is XYZ Industries. We’re sorry we can’t take your call right now but please leave a message after the tone. You can also visit us on www. xyz.com.”

7. Promote yourself to promote your site

The internet is a very hungry medium. It’s a huge consumer of information as well as being the greatest knowledge resource we’ve ever had. This gives budding authors a chance to be read around the world; without spending a cent on the costs of ink and paper. It also gives experts on any subject a forum to share their expertise with others. mykerrville.org | 45

DIRECTOR’s profile

FAMILY: Wife Shanna, Son Justin, Daughter Rylie ON GROWING UP, NAME ONE LESSON YOU WERE TAUGHT AS A CHILD THAT STICKS WITH YOU TODAY: It doesn’t matter what you do in life, what matters is that you always give your best effort! Hard work will always pay off. NAME ONE MENTOR AND ONE WAY HE/SHE HAS AFFECTED YOU. Anthony Herrera saw potential in me and gave me my first sales job in the telecommunications industry. I worked for him twice in my Telecom career. He taught me that it’s best to focus first on your customers and direct reports - instead of focusing on your “boss”. If you take care of customers and the people that work for you, you will affect the bottom line and your boss will be happy with your performance. DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL PROJECTS ON WORKS ON THE DRAWING BOARD? As the owner of Lemon Tree Cleaners, I am responsible for all aspects of operations – from hiring employees and quality control to customer service. Quality customer experience is our number one priority. It is important to me that my employees see me working in production and with customers; they know I will not ask them to do anything I’m not willing to do myself. I do my best to constantly and consistently provide them with the training and equipment they need to do their job well and efficiently. This year we implemented the Lucky Lemon Bonus Bucks program to save our customers money. We realize that in this demand based economy everyone is looking to save wherever they can – yet our customers do not want to sacrifice quality to do that. Since the program’s inception we have given back over $30,000 to our frequent customers! Before the end of the year we will be rolling out another program to save customers money AND time – a FREE Pick-up and Delivery Service for our Kerrville customers, expanding to other locations early 2011. We are continually searching for new and better ways to serve our customers and make their lives easier!

WHAT WORDS BEST DESCRIBE YOU? Fun, Funny, Hard-working, Dedicated. Life is short and should be enjoyed! I’m always looking for opportunities to joke and laugh while focused on working hard, side-by-side, with employees in my business, and leaders in my community. WHAT HOBBIES DO YOU HAVE? Hunting, Fishing and Team Roping have been my hobbies since childhood. Running a successful operation in a down economy requires full effort so I don’t have as much time as I’d like for those things at the moment. Spending time with my friends and family is also something I very much enjoy. I’m so proud of my amazing wife, who teaches school in Medina and both of my kids are very active. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB OUT OF COLLEGE: I had the pleasure of working on a team out of Nashville TN that was responsible for the installation of a new telecommunications system at the Corvette plant in Bowling Green, Ky. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? The opportunities to contribute to the Hill County Communities I love have been almost overwhelming since I bought Lemon Tree back in 2007. Serving on boards and various planning committees, the opportunity to go through the Leadership Kerr County program last year; have all been amazing! It also motivates me to encourage my employees (and some close friends and vendors) to be the best they can be. It’s more for me than just DryCleaning – it’s an opportunity to provide local jobs, local service and it’s very rewarding to see someone realize they are able to achieve something they may not have believed they could achieve otherwise! WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT WORKING WITH THE KERRVILLE BUSINESS COMMUNITY? The people! Kerrville has, by far, the nicest, most talented people I have ever had the pleasure to work with. Leaders in this community are always looking for ways to get involved and to make Kerrville a better place to work, live, play and shop! They are engaging and truly care about your business, your family and our community.
