Welcome TO

the Dominion Magazine Dear Reader,

In early June, I attended a conference in Washington, DC. Little did I know that I would be reminded of our great country, and of those who sacrificed so much for the freedoms we share and enjoy today. As my flight approached Washington DC, the Southwest Airlines flight attendant announced the special passengers aboard our plane, a young wife and her child, who were to receive a flag from their Congressman for her husband’s service in Afghanistan, Colin Powell’s opening remarks and keynote address which kicked-off our conference, and the powerful photography, portraits and story-telling of Platon, a world renowned photographer. This month’s featured article is by Moyra Jardon, a Dominion resident, who shares with us her life and experiences from birth and childhood in Great Britain to her admiration, appreciation, and contributions to our country and living in The Dominion. What is striking about her article, is her acknowledgement of our forefather’s Declaration which “discarded” British sovereignty and declared that the People be the only legitimate source of power as guided by the “Laws of Nature, and of Nature’s God”, a radical departure from British rule. However, through her British forefathers, she shares adoration for the United States. Dominion Country Club members and Dominion residents are welcome to join us at The Dominion Country Club in celebration of our Declaration of Independence for food, picnics, fireworks, and more. Happy Fourth of July!!!

club renovations BY stephen phillips, dominion country club general manager

The “reinvention” of our Club, featuring a $3,000,000 renovation that includes the addition of a state-of-the-art fitness center, an exciting new Member Grille, lounge, and outdoor patio is scheduled to begin on July 26th. Last month, we shared our re-designed floor plan and new Member spaces. Pictured here are some of the many elements that will transform the Club’s interior spaces, creating an upscale setting with modern amenities. Concurrent with our renovation, we are also launching a significant initiative to grow our Golf Member roster and provide opportunities for all of our Golf Members to increase their enjoyment of the great game of golf. Our goal is to make golf at The Dominion fun! For Golf Members, we will offer 20 free golf clinics and lessons geared toward new and novice golfers. A wide array of clinics and social activities will make golf fun for the entire family and The Dominion Country Club the social epicenter of our community. Part of our commitment to growing the game of golf at the Club is to focus on growing our Golf Membership. Incredible membership incentives are now in play until we reach a roster of 500 Golf Members, or concurrent with the beginning of construction, whichever occurs first. To discuss membership in this extraordinary Club, please contact Raquel Hebben at 210-698-4820, or Kelly Thompson at 210-698-3364. Both can also be reached via email at membership@the-dominion.com.

TITLE: Administrative Assistant Hometown: Born in Brooklyn, New York; Raised in Jersey City, New Jersey EDUCATION: Associates of Art in Communication Studies, Houston Community College What is your favorite aspect about working at The Dominion? I look forward every day to learning from a phenomenal staff team. Over the last year, I have learned so much about community management, covenants, making sound judgments in difficult situations, and how to effectively resolve compliance issues. HOA management is not easy but is very rewarding in so many ways. Also, I enjoy getting to know our Board members and how they dedicate so much of their time and efforts to serve the community that they love. I truly admire that. What do you enjoy doing in your free time, away from the HOA office? I love watching stand-up comedy specials and foreign films. I enjoy shopping, trying different kinds of makeup and skin care products, and traveling. I love cooking and baking healthy and gluten free versions of my favorite comfort foods and cheat meals. I spend most of my time at the gym training as a National Physique Committee figure competitor. I enjoy hiking around San Antonio and Austin.

LORRAINE G. GUAJARDO

TITLE: Receptionist Hometown: Born and raised in San Antonio What led you to your position with The Dominion HOA? I started with Leading Edge Personnel Staffing Agency. I was assigned to come and assist while Mrs. Sonia Matthews was out on maternity leave. I, then, was hired on part-time as the morning receptionist, and absolutely love my job. What do you enjoy doing in your free time, away from the HOA office? I am a team mom for our Little Giants football organization. That keeps not only me but my family very active. My husband (Roy) is an Assistant coach, my daughter (Melody) is a cheerleader, and my son (Nathaniel) has played football since the age of three. At the moment, my family, together with our staff, is working every weekend to come up with fundraisers to help support our 14U Football Players. My son, along with his team mates/brothers (who have been hand selected), will get to represent the state of Texas in the Gridiron National Football Tournament in Chula Vista, California. They’ve put in a lot of time, hard work, and dedication to get them where they are now. We’re all very excited and I couldn’t be more proud of them all. What has been your most enjoyable experience during your time here? Getting to meet and greet residents and share their background stories.

Morgan’s Wonderland 4th of july celebration By Michelle Hans

“A catalyst, a spark, an inspiration” Those three, powerful words have been said about Miss Morgan Hartman, daughter of San Antonio native and longtime philanthropist Gordon Hartman and wife, Maggie Hartman. She “doesn’t realize it, but her ability to smile through physical and cognitive challenges spurred her parents…to do things never before accomplished for individuals with special needs and their families. Morgan not only inspired the creation of a one-of-a-kind theme park but also a unique school and other initiatives benefitting the special-needs community.” After witnessing Morgan’s desire to play with others without much reciprocation from other children, Mr. Hartman felt compelled to build a fun and creative environment that allows both guests with and without special-needs to comprehend and appreciate each other’s differences while having fun together. “Gordon resolved to create opportunities and places where those with and without disabilities can come together not only for fun but also for a better understanding of one another.” On April 10, 2010, after three years in the making, Gordon Hartman was able to accomplish his dream. Morgan’s Wonderland opened its doors and “became the world’s first theme park designed with specialneeds individuals in mind and built for everyone’s enjoyment.” The $34-million theme park is completely wheelchair-accessible, and offers over “25 elements including rides, playgrounds and other colorful attractions.” These elements and attractions include “rides, playgrounds, gardens, an eight-acre catch-and-release fishing lake, 18,000-square-foot special-event center, 575-seat amphitheater, picnic area and rest areas throughout the park.” The newest attraction at Morgan’s Wonderland is a wheelchairaccessible, five-and-a-half story high Ferris wheel. The Whirling Wonder is “festooned with lights and visible at night from nearby IH 35.”

‘Salute to America’s Heroes’ A Special 4th of July Event Morgan’s Wonderland will celebrate our nation’s Independence Day with a special acknowledgment of the dedicated men and who protect “the citizenry including members of the armed forces and first responders such as fire, law enforcement and emergency medical professionals.” The park gates will be open at 9:00 a.m. and the event lasts until 4:00 p.m. There will be free food for guests offered from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. while supplies last. “Hot dogs with all the trimmings and apple pie will be served, and sodas and bottled water will cost just a dollar.” A discounted admission of $9 a person is offered to military members, first responders and their immediate families who present valid ID cards at the Morgan’s Wonderland Welcome Center. As always, guests with special needs and children, ages two and under, are admitted free of charge. “Our Salute to America’s Heroes has become a much-anticipated event on the Morgan’s Wonderland calendar,” General Manager Ron Morander said. “Traditionally, this has been a great opportunity for us to shine the spotlight on those men and women who are always at the ready to protect the citizenry and preserve the freedoms we cherish.” 34

JULY 2016

Looking Forward What’s a theme park without a water park! Gordon Hartman recently broke ground for the “world’s first all-inclusive splash park”, Morgan’s Inspiration Island, and is scheduled to open Spring 2017. The water park will be “ultra-accessible and feature tropically themed aquatic elements that everyone can enjoy. Guests of all ages and abilities can get wet and have fun together. It will feature a river boat adventure ride and five water play areas filled with splashy attractions.” Morgan’s Inspiration Island inclusion environment allows guests, with and without special needs, to create long-lasting memories while fostering acceptance, understanding, and new friendships. Want a sneak peek? Be sure to take a ride on the Whirling Wonder! The Ferris wheel gives riders “a breathtaking view of construction of Morgan’s Inspiration Island.”

The itch for grilling outside and enjoying outside events is here and perhaps more so this year than others. Blame it on the rain this spring, but firing up the grill at home is always fun and here are some tips for preparing this year. First, make sure your grill (especially your grill grates) are clean, wire brushes and scouring pads work, and S.O.S. Grill Mates contain cleaning agents that assist cleaning baked on grease. Always wear gloves to protect from harmful chemicals and rinse your cleaned areas well. Be sure your vents are working properly as they are 36

JULY 2016

a useful tool controlling temperature and be sure to get rid of excess ash build up. Next, fire up your grill and let it heat thoroughly before any cooking use. Lastly, oil up your grates - this is an important step often overlooked. Be sure to use a high-heat cooking oil such as corn, soy, or peanut oil, and use liberally. I use a pair of heavy duty tongs to dip a cloth rag, wadded or tied up with string, and I use it often and before cooking.

TIPS ON MARINADES

• • • • • •

I particularly enjoy creating marinades for grilling as the flavor and ingredient combinations are endless. I have some tips that may help in creating your own, or using purchased products. There are four basic reasons to marinate: flavor, texture (tenderizing), preservation, and moisture content, and no doubt flavor being the top motivation. Not all marinades are beneficial for all foods, proteins such as meats and poultry will not absorb as much as say mushrooms, eggplant, and porous vegetables. Marinades are almost always some mixture of acid and fat or oil. The acid usually comes from citrus juices or vinegars and sometimes yogurts. Time is the most important factor when marinating. For good results, delicate foods like fish and sea foods should marinate no more than an hour or two. If using a high acid marinade, no longer than 20 minutes because the fish or the sea foods will begin to break down and “cook”, as in some ceviches. Heavier proteins can benefit from a short marinate to overnight, and keep in mind thin cuts such as flank and skirt steak may benefit more than thick cuts as flavor increases with surface area. Salt is a key ingredient as it enhances flavor and texture by assisting in moisture retention. I recommend using kosher salt, and reduce amounts used when using salty ingredients such as soy and teriyaki sauces. One can find a variety of marinades in super markets, and I also recommend trying oil and vinegar based dressings.

¼ cup brown sugar ¼ cup raisins, currants, or other dry fruit 2 Tbsp. chopped pecans 1 tsp. cinnamon 4 Granny Smith Apples (or your favorite variety) 2 Tbsp. of butter, cut in quarters

Combine sugar, raisins, pecans, and cinnamon. Core the apples and place on foil sheets large enough to completely wrap. Spoon the mixture into apples and top with butter. Wrap tightly and place on the grill and cook until tender, about 30 minutes, depending on placement and temperature. I put them on first, before burgers, steaks or whatever, on the outer edges and let them cook, or let them cook on covered grill during other meal preparation. Enjoy with your favorite ice cream and try any other stuffing ingredients you may like.

Shrimp & Pineapple Skewers with Rum Butter • • • • • • • • • • • • •

2 Tbsp. fresh lime juice 2 Tbsp. olive oil 4 tsp. minced fresh ginger 2 tsp. minced garlic 1 tsp. red pepper flakes 16 shrimp, peeled and deveined 16 slices shaved prosciutto 1 medium size pineapple, cut in 1 inch cubes 2 Tbsp. shallots, minced ½ cup dark rum 6 ounces butter, cut into pieces ½ cup cilantro, minced Pinch of salt and cayenne pepper

Combine lime juice, ½ of the ginger, garlic, and pepper flakes. Add pineapple chunks and let marinate about 15 minutes. Wrap the shrimp in prosciutto and place on skewers with pineapple. Grill lightly until shrimp is done. You may use some marinade for the shrimp, being careful to not let sit very long as the acid from lime juice will turn the meat rubbery. Sauce: Bring the rum, shallots, and remaining ginger to a boil, reduce and simmer until volume is about 3 tablespoons. On LOW heat, whisk in butter chunks one at a time until you have reached a creamy texture, remove from heat immediately, and finish with salt and cayenne pepper. Drizzle over skewers, or remove shrimp and pineapple and sprinkle with cilantro with sauce on the side. This item works well as an appetizer, accompaniment to seafood, or even an entrée with simple rice.

FOURTH OF JULY AT THE CLUB A favorite summertime Member and Dominion Residents event at Dominion Country Club will be our annual 4th of July celebration featuring a variety of family entertainment. JULY 2016

by Brian Kenneth Swain, dominion resident photography by ben weber What motivates a young woman from Britain to migrate to America where, years later, she will end up throwing lavish annual Independence Day parties at her home in The Dominion? Long-time resident Moyra Jardon would tell you that it’s a combination of pride in her adopted country and gratitude for the many opportunities she’s been given in her years of living here. As the Fourth of July approaches, it’s worth taking a look back through history to better understand the forces, both historical and societal, that contributed to this remarkable journey.

T h e D o m i n i o n -M a g a z i n e . c o m

39

1933 was, for the most part, a peaceful year in Britain. Prime Minister MacDonald met with President Roosevelt to discuss global economics. Lord Clydesdale became the first person to fly an aircraft over Mount Everest. And Winifred Drinkwater was hired as the world’s first female commercial airline pilot, flying for the Midland and Scottish Air Ferries. On a more ominous note, Winston Churchill, then out of political favor but still very much in the public eye, made his first speeches warning of German rearmament. Into this melee of history a baby girl was born—Moyra Jardon—whose life journey would eventually take her half a world away, to the fast-growing city of San Antonio, Texas, where she would, many decades later, build her dream home in The Dominion. But before that journey could begin in earnest, the dark cloud of World War ll descended on her home country. Britain declared war on Germany in September of 1939 and the horrors of the blitz quickly replaced the everyday goings-on of pre-war London. The hospital in which Moyra was born was bombed and the school she had begun attending at age three was evacuated to the countryside, the children boarding red double-decker buses carrying their backpacks of barley sugar and eggs and their requisite gas mask containers. After a few months away, the children returned to find London transformed from a major cultural and financial hub of Europe to a city on a full-scale war footing, including the removal of any metals—down to the fencing around their home—that could be converted into war

40

JULY 2016

materials or munitions. The sounds of sirens and the darkness of air raid shelters made for a frightening time for a six-year old girl, but a formative one as well. In that time and place, everyone played some role in the war, and Moyra and her siblings and parents were no exception. Her father served in both world wars and was seriously injured in the second, returning home to receive the United Kingdom’s second highest wartime honor, the Distinguished Service Medal. The family, once again united, relocated to a home in the London suburbs where they endured the remainder of the war years, including the terror of frequent V1 and V2 attacks on the country. Whereas the V1 “buzz bombs” were relatively slow and accompanied by plenty of warning, it was the V2—brainchild of German rocket scientist Werner von Braun (for whom, many years later, ironically, Moyra would find herself working)—that was the real threat in those years. Traveling at supersonic speeds and descending nearly vertically, there were no advance warnings and the damage caused by these weapons was profound. The family’s home suffered no direct hits, but a near miss in an adjoining park shattered doors and windows and left a massive crater. In the midst of this chaos, on May 11, 1943, one of Moyra’s most cherished memories came to pass: attending the investiture of King George VI in the throne room at Buckingham Palace. It was a ceremony whose dignity and pomp made a lasting impression on the tenyear-old girl. Two years later, with the war over and victory assured, British soldiers

began returning to their homes, many of which were either destroyed or at least heavily damaged. Though the housing shortage in London at that time was acute, Moyra’s family eventually relocated to an apartment near the central city in a renovated Victorian house. She attended a business college and subsequently secured a position with a firm in Piccadilly Circus, working for the director of a conglomerate that owned several wellknown London hotels. While working for the firm, she met an American man and made the fateful decision to join him in the U.S. There were strong concerns in those days about immigrants to America who had contracted or been exposed to tuberculosis, but it was a malady Moyra had been fortunate to avoid, so she was allowed to enter the USA. She eventually made her way to San Antonio and found a city that couldn’t have been less like her native London. And though she missed the history, the arts, and the opera of her native country, she eventually fell in love with south Texas. For a young woman from the turmoil and tragedy of wartime England, San Antonio was an exotic array of bougainvillea, bananas, and hibiscus. She also availed herself of the easy access to Mexican destinations like Acapulco and Mexico City. During her early days in San Antonio, Moyra worked for a prominent plaintiff’s attorney, an opportunity that allowed her to not only learn the nuances of the American legal system, but also to meet many of the city leaders of the time. She worked, as well, for Southwest Research Institute, a distinguished research facility founded by Tom Slick, at which many

European émigrés worked in those years. Moyra also worked for SWRI president Martin Goland, who served as her mentor and friend. Moyra left the institute upon receiving her citizenship and took a position with the Department of Defense. While all this was taking place, Moyra also had a son in college who would go on to enjoy a long career as head football coach at Clark High School. Moyra’s husband, who was a Colonel and pilot in the USAF, served in Vietnam, after which the couple moved numerous times. They were stationed in Washington D.C. where Moyra worked at Bethesda Naval Hospital during the Nixon administration, then Stuttgart, Germany, during which she had the opportunity to visit many nearby European countries. After Stuttgart, they were stationed in Madrid, Spain, where the couple worked mainly with the Spanish military, then deep in the thralls of gaining admission to NATO. It was from the Spanish aristocracy that Moyra admired and emulated the many nuances of entertaining, manners, and gentility. The couple built a house in Catalonia on a cove overlooking the Mediterranean, and when her husband retired they moved to their new home two hours from the Pyrenees. But even in this idyllic setting, Moyra longed for her adopted home city of San Antonio. Eventually she was successful in convincing her husband to return to Texas and to the condo they had maintained as their official U.S. residence throughout their long overseas sojourn. Later, following a divorce, Moyra was introduced to a Reserve Brigadier General from Omaha who soon proposed. The new couple relocated to Nebraska where he primarily practiced orthopedics at UNMC. The transition from military to medical life was yet another lifestyle challenge to which Moyra rose with all the verve she had demonstrated throughout her life. She built a beautiful house on a golf course, learned the game, and did her best to adapt to the social mores of the Midwestern Great Plains, but her heart never quite let go of San Antonio. And so, following her husband’s retirement from the Reserves and from his medical practice, he was convinced to relocate back to Texas where the couple lived in Rockport for another twelve years while also maintaining a home in San Antonio near the Quarry Market. In Rockport they built a home on the beach and Moyra couldn’t help but compare the pleasure of walking on the sandy beaches of south Texas with the barricaded coast of southern England during her wartime upbringing. They were opposite ends of the same ocean, but the experiences couldn’t have been more profoundly different. While in Rockport, the couple was active with the Humane Society and the Arts Center. Her husband was an artist and served on the board, while they both supported fund raising for new shows. Moyra grew to understand and appreciate the details of South Texas history and continues, even now, to support the Rockport Humane Society. With the passing of her husband, she sold the Rockport and Quarry properties and bought a home in The Gardens area of The Dominion. She was pleasantly surprised at the beauty, tranquility, and, most of all, the friendliness of the people there. But if there is one constant in Moyra’s life, it is change, and so she soon moved to her dream home on Reading Lane. And while travel remains her first love, she now regards this home as her second. She has traveled to every continent, having only recently completed the list by visiting Antarctica, and has experienced a world of different cultures and lifestyles. She has lived through the British blitz and more relocations and cultural adjustments than an entire neighborhood of people. Yet she still finds Dominion residents remarkably well traveled and full of wonderful stories and histories of their own. Since first arriving in America many years ago, Moyra has made a point for many years of throwing a celebratory Fourth of July party. Given her British heritage, she was often asked why this holiday is so important to her. The explanation she offers is simple and poignant. “My forefathers were the pioneers who came to this country. They settled the land, nurtured it, and eventually discarded British leadership and made this place their own.” She came to our beautiful country to make her own mark. Like her forefathers, her goal has always been to contribute as much as she can to her adopted country. Independence Day celebrations are but a simple reminder and a heartfelt gift. Moyra has come a tremendous way from the bombs and rockets of war-torn England, but is more convinced than ever that she has finally found her real home.

as the Texas summer heat got you longing for a shot of below-Arctic temperatures? Has joint pain, back pain or a recent injury got you wondering whether you will ever be pain-free again? CryoFit and its brand of whole body cryotherapy will provide you with the ultimate cool down while also reducing pain and inflammation in your body. Located in Domain Plaza across from The Dominion, CryoFit brings a new twist to a decadesold therapy that has finally made its way to the United States.

BACKGROUND The modern practice of whole body cryotherapy is credited to Dr. Toshiro Yamaguchi of Japan who, as early as 1978, first used the treatment to manage pain in his clients with rheumatoid arthritis. Dr. Yamaguchi found that by exposing the body to extremely cold temperatures (-202 to -256 Fahrenheit) for brief periods of time (usually three minutes or less) an immediate endorphin release occurred, and joint pain was significantly reduced. Dr. Yamaguchi surmised that hyper-cooling a person’s skin to temperatures near freezing was much more beneficial to the body’s musculoskeletal system than the gradual cooling experienced in an ice bath where the skin temperature cannot cool below 41-degrees Fahrenheit. Expanding on the success of Dr. Yamaguchi’s research, whole body cryotherapy was used extensively in Russia in the 1980s to aid their Olympic athletes in their training and recovery. Having done regular dips in frozen lakes for generations, the Russians found that the endorphin release caused by this new process decreased sensitivity to pain and helped the body reduce muscle inflammation and joint pain. For the past two decades, whole body cryotherapy has been studied extensively in many European countries where, besides the previously known benefit of improving many inflammation-based conditions, it has also been used to treat mental health issues like depression and cosmetic issues like restoring skin elasticity by stimulating collagen production.

TODAY Over the past several years, whole body cryotherapy has made its way to the United States where professional sports franchises and Olympic training facilities were among the early adopters of this relatively new modality. In 2011, the Dallas Mavericks credited their consistent use of whole body cryotherapy with their NBA title that season. Our own San Antonio Spurs have used whole body cryotherapy for the past several seasons and have a few cryotherapy cabins to keep the team in top physical condition. Sports giant, Nike, relies on whole body cryotherapy in its world-famous, high-altitude training campus

called the Nike Oregon Project. Even the world’s elite golfers are incorporating the extreme cold therapy into their training regimens as the likes of Jordan Spieth and Padraig Harrington can be regularly found freezing to keep pain in check and to increase flexibility. Whole body cryotherapy has lately found its way into collegiate training rooms at major universities across the country with entire conferences adopting the therapy for men’s and women’s athletic programs. In San Antonio, CryoFit opened its doors in August 2014, and immediately developed a dedicated following among athletes and chronic pain sufferers that have longed for a more effective and pleasant alternative to regular ice baths. CryoFit offers its 3-minute whole body cryotherapy treatments to a broad spectrum of clients. They treat clients as young as 12 years old and as “seasoned” as 83 years old. Their client list includes Olympic contenders, local celebrities, high profile executives, active baby boomers, high school and collegiate athletes, chronic pain sufferers, and soccer moms. Roughly two-thirds of CryoFit’s clients are athletic individuals who compete in a sport and continually push their bodies to improve. Recently, several local orthopedic surgeons and physical therapists have begun referring patients to CryoFit in an effort to reduce inflammation from injury or surgery and accelerate positive rehab outcomes. Several of the referring physicians and therapists consider the client feedback compelling and encouraging, and are continuing to prescribe cryotherapy to activate the body’s natural recovery processes. Typical responses from first-timers include the well-documented endorphin release (resulting in reduced pain levels), an adrenaline release, an increased appetite, and calorie burn from creating a thermogenic event and longer periods of deep sleep. Prolonged use has even helped jumpstart efforts to lose inches in people looking to shed a few pounds. During a session, clients are provided with appropriate protection for their extremities and are coached through the entire three minutes while they listen to music of their choice. Appointments can be scheduled online at www.mycryofit.com, via the CryoFit app, or by phone to the local office at (210) 858-8487. My wife Sheryl and I are the local CryoFit partners, and have been busy developing the CryoFit brand and national franchise. In less than 10 months since franchising, CryoFit has received several hundred franchise requests, from within the San Antonio city limits to Sidney, Australia. Plans are in the works for at least four additional locations in the San Antonio area in the next year, and CryoFit Austin will open another three or four locations by the end of 2016.

JULY 2016

by Sandy Marquez, Dominion Resident Exhausted after a fun day out? Have dinner, groceries, and cocktail ingredients delivered soon after you get home. Hosting an impromptu party? Have the food, wine, gifts, and flowers all arrive at your door while you get yourself ready. Forgot the pet food? Out of shampoo? Finished your book? Need some pool toys? Relax. You’re covered! Wouldn’t it be more fun to enjoy your summer and time with your family rather than having to go grocery shopping? Are the lazy days of summer making you feel sluggish? Whether you do not have the time or desire to run errands, there are timesaving and convenient services in our area to help! Here are some of those services, with more options to come.

INSTACART www.instacart.com

Instacart provides a personal shopper who will choose and deliver items from several stores in our area, including Whole Foods, Costco, HEB, Petco Now, Specs, and Total Wine. All you have to do is sign up! There are no membership fees for regular deliveries. You order by browsing through the many available items found on the Instacart website from either your computer or mobile device. Whole Foods, Petco Now, and Total Wine offer the same prices as in their stores. For HEB and Specs, the prices vary somewhat from in-store pricing. From Costco, you pay 15% over in-store pricing, but you do not have to be a Costco member. Most deliveries are $5.99 for orders over $35.00, or $9.99 for lesser orders. If you would like to set up a regular delivery service, there is Instacart Express for $149.00 per year. All orders over $35.00 placed through Instacart Express receive free delivery. If you choose the onehour delivery option, there is an additional $2.00 fee. Although most deliveries are same day, even within two hours, deliveries later in the week can be requested. Each store has delivery-time windows, but you can request your own delivery-time within those time periods. Tipping for personal shoppers is included. You also have the ability to purchase from multiple stores in one order. Browsing through Instacart, it seemed that Whole Foods had a more limited inventory, but the others have an amazing number of items available.

AMAZON PRIME NOW www.primenow.amazon.com

Although there is no charge for this service, you have to be an Amazon Prime member to use it. The number of items available for two-hour delivery is impressive! You can shop for groceries, health and beauty items, household essentials, electronics and video games, devices, home/ kitchen/office supplies, toys/kids/baby items, pet supplies, sporting equipment, gift cards, and more. From early morning to late evening, you will have your items delivered in two hours. 48

JULY 2016

SHIPT

www.shipt.com Shipt delivers groceries from HEB done by a personal shopper. You can sign up on the Shipt website from your computer or mobile device. There is a $99.00 per year or $14.00 per month membership fee. After selecting your groceries, you choose your delivery options, and your items are delivered that day, and often within one hour. You can also choose the delivery time to mesh with your schedule. All orders over $35.00 receive free delivery, or a $7.00 fee for smaller orders. Like Instacart, items are chosen by your personal shopper including fresh produce, frozen items, etc. No alcohol, tobacco, or prescription orders are allowed. Prices are somewhat higher than in-store pricing. You can also specialorder a product not already available on the huge list of items for an additional 20% fee on that particular item. Tips for the personal shopper are not included in the pricing, and while they are appreciated, tipping is not expected.

WALMART GROCERY

www.grocery.walmart.com

WalMart has a new system where you can shop online for groceries and other items, similar to the above systems, through your computer or mobile device. There is a $30.00 minimum order purchase. Your order will be ready for pick-up within 2-4 hours. You will then only need to drive up to a designated space and your order will then be loaded up in your car. Prices are the same as pricing in the store and there is a no-tipping policy. Although this newest service is available at many other stores in the San Antonio area, it is not yet available at our local Leon Springs WalMart.

A FEW NOTES TO REMEMBER… • • •

Buyers must be home to receive their orders. If you live in The Dominion, please remember to leave the delivery company’s name and an approximate delivery time with security. If you or someone you know is looking for ways to make a little extra money, both the Shipt and Instacart sites have information about becoming a personal shopper yourself.

chad harthan

man of the year With great pride and pleasure, we bring you news of Chad Harthan, a Dominion resident and featured student in our April 2016 issue. For a period of ten weeks, Chad worked tirelessly to raise funds for the city’s chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Our own “Dominion Dines” author, Lisa Arcuri and husband John hosted a “White on White” fundraiser on June 3rd at their Dominion home which raised a very substantial amount of funds to support Chad in the competition. Ultimately, Chad’s winning total was an incredible $290,903.00! Kudos to the Arcuri family and all of Chad’s charitable donors! Congratulations to Chad’s parents, Lisa and Chuck Harthan, whose faithful support and high energy helped propel Chad to the top. We are pleased to share the following press release:

Spotlight Shines on San Antonio, Chapter Sets New Fundraising Record for Blood Cancer Research and Patient Services Seventeen candidates from San Antonio raised at total of $1.59 million in 10 weeks breaking a fundraising record for the city’s chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Chad Harthan, 17, of San Antonio, raised over $290,000 in 10 weeks to best 9 fellow fundraisers to become The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Man of the Year”. The 17-year-old, a leukemia survivor himself, has been in remission for 15 years now. Come this fall, he will begin his senior year at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas. April Ancira, of San Antonio, raised over $234,000 during the 10 week campaign, becoming The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Woman of the Year” and the highest fundraising woman in the history of the San Antonio campaign. April earned the title by raising more funds than her 5 fundraising counterparts. April is the Vice President at Ancira Auto Group. She lives in San Antonio with her husband and two children. 54

The Man and Woman of the Year competition has been held across the country for the last 20 years. The South Central Texas Chapter catapulted into the Million Dollar Campaign ranks for the first time in 2013 and continues to raise the amount of funds brought in each year. For the South Central Texas Chapter - San Antonio campaign 17 candidates raised a record-setting $1.59 million this year. This amount included an auction that raised almost $175,000. “San Antonio individuals and businesses really came through in a big way supporting our candidates,” says Jessica De Souza, Campaign Director, explaining that this is the first time local fundraising has surpassed $1.5 million for the highly competitive Alamo City version of Man and Woman of the Year.

CAROLE MINTON OCCUPATION: I spent 20 years in corporate world at IBM and another 5 years heading a performing arts non-profit company in California. When I took earlyretirement I started an applied consulting business and worked primarily in the arts and other non-profits in Silicon Valley. We had moved frequently with IBM and I felt my experience moving would be very beneficial in real estate. We now have a real estate company powered by eXp Realty, LLC. POSITION AND DUTIES ON THE BOARD: This year I am the Board liason for the Neighborhood Outreach Committee. I am privileged to work with some great people from the community and staff to welcome all new residents to The Dominion, to bring together all the HOA events, serve as liaison with the Country Club, and provide communications with the residents through The Dominion Magazine, the marquee signs, email blasts, surveys, etc. MOST ENJOYABLE PART OF BEING A BOARD MEMBER: The Dominion is larger than many cities in Texas. The Board and the small (in number) paid staff manage this community like a larger city. It is great to work with so many diverse and talented people. They are those rare individuals you want to know personally as well as work with them. I really enjoy knowing and working with people who so love their community that they are willing to give the hours necessary to ensure that as we grow, we are well managed. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT LIVING IN SUCH A WONDERFUL COMMUNITY? The friendliness of the people, the beautiful well-landscaped grounds, the warm weather and again, the friendliness of the people. It is so terrific to live in an area where the people have such varied backgrounds, are educated in so many ways with great experiences in their life, are different in their own way and they all enjoy being together. I am quite proud of a volunteer group in The Dominion called the Apron Society. This group has about 140 members who are willing to spend their time helping others in the community. Whenever there is illness, death or other needs of a resident, someone will pitch in to help that person whether it be providing food, care, picking up prescriptions, scheduling doctor appointments or other activities. I don’t know of another community that does this for the neighbors whether you know them or not.

Jim Boles built the house speculatively but had the great foresight to put almost 5,000 square feet of living space on one level floor. Little did he know how special that would be for his eventual buyers, Dr. Ken and Nancy Davis. Dr. Davis has Multiple Sclerosis and lost his ability to walk years before, probably when Jim Boles was still in college at Texas A&M. The couple had built a one-level home in Mississippi, but when a career opportunity incentivized them to make a move to San Antonio in 2008, they knew finding an accessible home might prove challenging. Yet Jim Boles had just finished constructing a gorgeous one-level in the only neighborhood they had considered, The Dominion.

MASTER BATH In addition, the couple hired Jim Boles to re-design and build a new master bath, including a hand-built tub made especially for Dr. Davis. And Nancy Davis finally got her marble floors that she had always wanted. “Jim has the most incredible subs. The guys who laid our marble were perfectionists, true artists,” She elaborated, “I told Ken as long as we’re having the guys here to re-build our master bath, isn’t it the perfect time to get that sugar flake marble I’ve had my eye on for seven years? After all, my motto is, ‘life is short and then you die, so walk on marble and learn how to fly.’” T h e D o m i n i o n -M a g a z i n e . c o m

POOL AREA Just last year the couple decided to stay in San Antonio for as long as they could so they added a swimming pool in the largest of the four courtyards. Jim Boles’ planning paid off once again. He had made that particular courtyard “pool ready.” The couple worked with Keith Zars Pools to build a raised pool so that Ken could evenly transfer from his wheelchair seat onto the pool walls for easy access. Inside the pool, there is a safety bench built in, not only for Ken but for their dogs or anyone needing to quickly reach for air. “We love the way our pool turned out because it has the perfect combination of beauty, function and safety,” said Dr. Davis.

Marilyn and tom farello visit egypt

by Marilyn Farello, dominion resident Is a trip to see the Pyramids in Giza on your bucket list? Well, what are you waiting for? Now is actually a great time to go! Due to the political issues of a few years ago, tourism in Egypt is down from a high of about 18 million tourists a year to around 800,000 tourists annually, and Egyptians are welcoming travelers with open arms and safe travel conditions. My husband and I recently embarked on a two-week tour of this amazing part of the world and truly enjoyed it. We began our adventure in Cairo with a tour of this historic city and a visit to the Egyptian Museum. The Egyptian Museum houses over 120,000 Egyptian antiquities, many dating back over 5,000 years. The highlights of the museum are the treasures of King Tutankhamen, including his gold and jewel encrusted death mask, and the mummified remains of ancient kings. This civilization of so long ago is truly amazing! Our journey continued with a short flight to Luxor and a visit to the Temple of Karnak, a mere 4,000 years old. Most famous in this complex is the Hall of Columns—a collection of 134 gigantic sandstone columns in the shape of stalks of papyrus. We next boarded a riverboat for a 7-day cruise down the southern part of the Nile River. Along the way we visited many other temples, each with unique characteristics Another highpoint of our trip was a visit to the Valley of the Kings. This area was used as royal burial ground for over 500 years and the site where the treasures of King Tutankhamen were excavated. The ancient burial sites were carved deep into the mountains to avoid theft from grave robbers. The walls of these massive tombs were adorned with incredible artwork, much of which is still visible to this day. Gilded riches entombed for the royal after-life! The scenery cruising down the Nile was quite beautiful, a stretch of fertile land with endless desert in the background. The crops, wildlife, and people were fascinating. In Aswan, we stopped for afternoon tea at the Old Cataract Hotel. The hotel’s prior guests included Princess Diana and Winston Churchill, and was also featured in Agatha Christie’s novel, Death on the Nile. Definitely a royal treat! I would be remiss not to mention a side trip we took to Abu Simbel. Abu Simbel is a series of 3,500 year-old temples with massive stone sculptures carved into sandstone cliffs. The main temple is adorned with four giant statues of King Ramses II, each measuring about 70 feet in height. In the early 1960’s, the temples were actually moved in a multi-million dollar project to protect them from the waters of Lake Nasser – an engineering feat by both the builders and the movers of the temples. Our tour saved the best for last—the Pyramids of Giza-- the only surviving Wonder of the Ancient World. Talk about another engineering feat! The architectural precision of these constructions is awe-inspiring, and demonstrates how truly advanced the ancient Egyptian civilization truly was. We were surprised by how close to the bustling city center the pyramids actually are. We took the “mandatory” camel ride around the pyramid area, and confirmed that camels are indeed quite smelly creatures. Tourism is the most important industry in Egypt, and the Egyptians are working hard to encourage travel to their country. Prices are reasonable, crowds are way down, tour guides are extremely well-educated and knowledgeable, and the Egyptian people are ready to greet you. Go to Egypt and enjoy this ancient civilization! 70
