What is Active Travel?

Walking, scooting and cycling are probably the best way to get to school in an active way if you can – you’ll become independent, it counts as exercise and you won’t get stuck in traffic, so it takes the same amount of time every day. rget electric scooters are illegal to ride on pavements & roads only be used on private property.

Students who have to travel by car could look to Park & Stride – find a safe place to be dropped off a little way from school and walk the rest of the way!

If you take a public bus you could even hop off the bus a stop early and enjoy a short walk!

Walk, cycle or Park & Stride and WATCH what happens:

Exercise, especially with friends, can help reduce stress – use it as a time to catch up and remember there’s safety in numbers!

Car-users can experience 5 times more pollution than cyclists and 3½ ti more than walkers

Fewer cars and less congestion around the school gates will improve everyone’s safety

Save money on petrol, as well as saving you time

and can help prevent illnesses

No idling !

If you have to travel to school in a car families are encouraged to turn off their engines while waiting in the school car parks and surrounding streets.

Waiting with your engine on for just ten minutes a day will produce enough excess fumes across the year to fuel two jumbo jets!

Pollutants from idling vehicles have been linked to asthma, heart disease and bronchitis, children are especially vulnerable to these issues.

Community

St Mary's College works actively with parents and carers to raise awareness of the impact of our travel to and from school on the local community surrounding our school.

We ask our families to use the roads around the school both legally and respectfully, remembering to:

Not park on double yellow lines illegally

Not to drop students off in live traffic

Do not park across other people's driveways

Drive at 20mph outside the school and at 5mph on our grounds

Pedal power!

Cycling is cheap, green and a super way to stay fit and healthy. It’s quicker than walking and sometimes faster than the bus or car, especially in traffic.

To keep your bike safe and dry, covered cycle parking is available at the school. Don't forget a helmet and a bike lock and lights on dark nights
