Personalised Curriculum offer

Our personalised curriculum ensures that we are providing a varied curriculum for our SEND learners which meets the needs of the individual child. This curriculum is delivered via the following pathways:

1. Through adaptations made within a mainstream classroom environment.

2. Through adaptations made within the mainstream classroom environment supplemented by additional interventions and/or use of small group work outside of the classroom or in the H.U.B.

3. Through a blended curriculum and intervention offer. This may involve some children accessing some curriculum content within our H.U.B blended with an adapted mainstream environment.

The curriculum offer, timetable and other various components are decided upon by our school team and is determined by the needs of the children. Access to pathways is not fixed and children can move from one pathway to another dependent on assessment of their individual academic and/or social and emotional needs. Decisions about what provision children access are made by the SENCo, class teacher and other relevant professionals and will be done in collaboration with the parents and child (if appropriate).

We ensure our curriculum offer develops the whole child through social development, emotional development and academic development. Our personalised learning is identified through provision outlined in an EHC plan alongside person centred meetings around the child. Although there are times when a pupil may not yet have an EHCP, but still require a provision that is different to their peers so they can make progress from their individual starting points.

Children access all national curriculum subjects- this will be at the stage of learning the child is assessed at.

Adaptative teaching strategies are utilised so barriers are removed and children can access tasks. Additional adults are utilised if needed.

Pupil passport/EHCP informs practice, small steps targets and additional resources/strategies needed.

Assessments are undertaken in line with their peers and against the relevant (stage) year group expectations

As for pathway 1

Additional interventions are used in line with small step targets on pupil passports/EHCP. These may be 1:1 or in small groups.

Some learning may take place within bespoke areas such as the Rainbow room, Sunshine Room and the HUB

For some children, access to the additional support will be carefully timetabled to meet specific needs. For others, it may be more fluid and dependent on the child’s needs in the moment.

Children will broadly access all national curriculum subjects at a meaningful stage.

Key knowledge and skill, needed to be able to access and make sense of the world around them, will inform the learning sequences undertaken.

Key components will frequently be repeated and revisited to build up schema; consideration of cognitive overload and working memory will be made.

Learning will be a blend of more ‘formal’ approaches, play-based and hands-on practical tasks.

Length of and time spent on activities will be dependent on the child’s needs.

Individual interventions will take place in line with pupil passports/EHCP.

Philippians 2:15

At St Richard’s VC Academy, we believe that children should be able to learn, and be successful in a happy and safe environment. ‘The Hub’ has been established to provide an alternative space for some children who find some aspects of their mainstream classroom challenging. It is a bespoke base with a warm and homely environment focusing on social and emotional skills and where children can access learning at a developmentally appropriate level. Children access the provision dependent on their individual needs.

➢ The Hub uses both the national curriculum and the specific targets set on the children’s EHC plans to formulate a learning pathway for the children.

➢ Each child’s learning pathway is unique to them and ensures their individual needs are catered for and adapted to. The timetable of activities and length of sessions in the Hub is planned on an individual basis.

➢ Our HUB provision follows a set time table to support all learners. Sessions can be whole group, small group, paired or one to one depending on the objective and learner.

➢ Sessions are also in place to specifically focus on developing life skills in preparation for their next stage of education and the world beyond school

➢ Reading is skill that every child needs and as such it is at the heart of our Hub provision. Having every child being able to read with a good level of fluency, automaticity and have developed a real love of books by the time they leave the HUB, is one of our main goals.

➢ We know that not all children learn to read the same way and at the same rate and so, because of this, every HUB member has their own bespoke reading pathway. For some children, repetition and overlearning are key to the development of their working memories

Our Hub philosophy is underpinned by the 6 nurture principles established by the work of Marjorie Boxall and Nurture Uk

• Children’s learning is understood developmentally

• The classroom offers a safe base

• All behaviour is communication

• The importance of nurture for the development of well being

• Language is a vital means of communication

• The importance of transition in children’s lives

Aspire,

Our Sunshine Room is used by some of our key stage 1 children who sometimes struggle to remain focused and regulated within their busy mainstream classroom. Sessions within the room focus on the development of social and emotional skills which then enable the children to have more secure learning behaviours and attitudes.

The Sunshine Room is an alternative nurture provision. The focus is, by using a nurturing approach, to get a select few children ready to learn through helping them better manage their social and emotional needs.

We offer a small group setting with focused craft and play activities based around their needs such as; turn taking, speaking, friendships, self- worth and controlling their emotions.

The Sunshine Room provides a safe space and a relaxing environment. The children are supported by a key adult – Mrs Durham.

Our beautiful Rainbow Room is a safe, colourful but calming space where children, who need to, are encouraged to express their feelings and worries freely. A trusting relationship is built up with a key adult - Mrs McWatt who is our experienced Emotional Learning Support Assistant.

We offer small group and 1:1 sessions, which are usually bespoke and targeted specifically at each child's needs. Children can also drop in to regulate their emotions, if they are finding things challenging.

One to one sessions may include programmes or interventions around grief and loss, self-esteem, worries, anger management, anxiety, emotions and friendships. Whereas group interventions may include: friendship, listening skills, self-esteem, understanding emotions and communication skills. There is always a focus on building confidence, self -worth, and children are encouraged to be the best versions of themselves.

The Rainbow Room is a relaxing place to be, with art therapy exercises taking place to soft music, turn-taking games, creative craft sessions and Lego therapy to name a few.

The Retreat

Our wonderful retreat is a multi-purpose sanctuary: a safe space for both parents and children to play, pray, chat and find support.

‘Gab and Grab’ is a concept that we have always wanted to deliver: a place of refuge for the community and a weekly coffee morning attended by many parents and even the local lollipop lady ! Food is replenished weekly and parents come and help themselves to the essentials that are needed in these expensive and uncertain times. Advice is given by Mrs Griffin, our experienced DSL, messages are passed on and parent views are sought. Parents also know to ask for any food or items for families and friends if required.

Our Retreat is going from strength to strength. In addition to Gab and Grab, we have also enlisted the support of the Hull Adult Education Team and they are providing parenting advice and support far beyond the school walls.

In addition to providing a welcome refuge to support the mental health and wellbeing of the families we serve, the retreat is also used to support those in crisis. Bespoke 1:1 Advotalk support sessions which seek to empower children and young people who are experiencing personal, emotional and social difficulties also take place in this safe haven.

Our parents’ views on this warm and welcoming space:

“The Retreat is a place to socialise, I'm with people I trust.”

“I feel safe and get support with uniform and food. Its educational and part of my routine.”

“I can meet with friends and get advice when needed.”

“I like the atmosphere, Mrs Griffin is friendly , trustworthy and understanding.”
