RESTAURANT GUIDE

Recognizing the threat posed by food allergies A well-balanced diet rich in nutrients and vitamins is an essential component of a healthy diet. When coupled with routine exercise, a healthy diet can pave the way for a long life. However, some foods considered healthy, including dairy products and wheat, can pose a threat to men, women and children, triggering allergic reactions that can put their lives in jeopardy. Food allergies are no small concern. In fact, according to FARE® (Food Allergy Research & Education), an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life and health of individuals with food allergies, an allergic reaction to food sends someone to the emergency room every three minutes in the United States. To avoid such trips, it’s imperative that people understand food allergies and learn to recognize the symptoms of allergic reactions. What is a food allergy? FARE® notes that food allergies are a medical condition in which exposure to certain foods triggers harmful responses from the immune system. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, these immune responses can be severe and life threatening. For example, anaphylaxis is a severe

April 10, 2019

allergic reaction that causes the immune system to release a flood of chemicals, potentially sending a person into shock. The Mayo Clinic notes that anaphylaxis causes a sudden drop in blood pressure and the narrowing of airways, making it difficult, if not impossible, to breathe. What are some symptoms of allergic reactions to food? Anaphylaxis is a severe and lifethreatening response to a food. Thankfully, not all symptoms of food allergies are so severe. FARE® notes that mild symptoms of food allergies may include: • Hives • A flareup of eczema characterized by a persistent dry, itchy rash • Redness of the skin, especially around the mouth or eyes • Itchy mouth or ear canal • Nausea or vomiting • Diarrhea These mild to moderate symptoms can be uncomfortable and unnerving and should be reported to a physician immediately. People who suspect they are the result of a food allergy should write down everything they ate, and avoid certain foods that spark their suspicion until they have had a chance to visit their doctors.

Severe symptoms of food allergies may include: • Difficulty swallowing • Shortness of breath or wheezing • Turning blue • Loss of consciousness • Chest pain Are certain foods more likely to trigger allergic reactions? The CDC notes that eight foods or food groups account for 90 percent of allergic reactions in the United States. These foods, many of which are otherwise healthy for many people, include: • Milk • Eggs • Fish • Crustacean shellfish • Wheat • Soy • Peanuts • Treen nuts

Local dining spots foster community

• High-quality food: Many local establishments have complete control over their suppliers and Dining out is a great way to menus. As a result, they can be picky celebrate life’s milestones or simply with regard to the vendors they use reconnect with friends and loved and the produce, meats, dairy, and ones. Research firm NPD Group other ingredients that they select. found that, by the end of 2015, Many small, independently owned restaurant visits by consumers restaurants team up with local increased by 700 million compared organic farmers and distributors to supply a farm-to-table experience to just five years prior. that many diners now enjoy. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. But dining out at local eateries can be beneficial in various ways.

• Freedom of experimentation: Although chain restaurants may have to meet approval from administrative boards and marketing departments before they can introduce new fare, independently owned restaurants can let their diners decide which foods remain on the menu and even adapt to community trends. Local restaurants may take pride in serving cultural or regional foods.

• Ability to customize: Independently owned restaurants may be more amenable to adapting recipes or making substitutions to meet diners’ requests. Skilled local chefs can think on the fly and modify recipes, which may not always be possible in chain establishments. • Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business. • Familiar faces: Some diners enjoy being a “regular” at their favorite local restaurants. Local

dining spots also become gathering locations for residents in the know, instead of passing-through tourists or commuters. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

Nelly

"WHOA Nelly!" Can you believe that one of my shelter waitresses said that a few days ago? The worst part is that it was totally candid and she laughed at herself forever! She wasn't all wrong though because that IS my name. I've always been treated well but I'm used to having the run of both the great outdoors and a cozy couch. My freedom was still limited because for most of my 4 or 5 years, I've either been pregnant or raising miniature beauties like myself. Maybe I miss motherhood a little, but it's not fair! Why am I still confined now that I don't have to worry about babies? Shelter life stresses me out, I dream of being half the wild child I once was; with a warm lap or plush surface to laze on but still playful and a tinge sassy. All I want is to watch my purrson walk up to my cage and smile whether I nuzzle or swat, knowing that I'll melt once we get home. The CCC is in need of supplies, especially litter (Scoop Away), bleach, laundry detergent, dry and wet cat and kitten food (Purina/Friskies), paper towels, trash bags, and treats! Any help is very much appreciated! We are located at 289 Thompson Road in Webster and are open Thursday through Sunday 12pm-3:30pm. You can see more of our adoptable cats on Petfinder and Adopt-a-pet and we would love it if you would follow us and share our kitties on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com /pages/Community-Cat Connection/18375625177438. How to Plant Your Garden from Scratch

(StatePoint) Planting a garden from scratch can sound like a daunting task, especially for those who are new to the hobby. But with the right knowledge, you can plan a successful, fruitful green space and expect to have a great harvest. One way to get a head start on your garden is to start your seedlings indoors and then transplant them later into an outdoor garden. This time-tested technique can save you hundreds of dollars annually, as young plants at a nursery can be pricey. Here are some tips and tricks to make the most of this method: • Don’t start your indoor plants too soon. They can grow in about four weeks or less if you use a highquality garden starter. Check seed packages to learn when to plant outdoors in your area, and then start them indoors one month earlier to your transplanting date outdoors. • Consider using a seed-starting system that takes some of the

gardening guesswork out of the equation. For example, the Aerogarden Seed Starting system allows you to start up to 66 seedlings indoors with no dirt or mess, nurturing seeds with optimal amounts of water and nutrients for reliable germination and healthy growth. • Add new nutrients to the seedlings every two weeks and keep the water at full level. Feeding your plants more than the recommended amount will not make them grow faster. In fact, it could hurt the plants.

they should be about 4-6 inches tall. If possible, wait to plant your seedlings on a cool, cloudy day. If your seedlings get too large before weather will allow transplanting outdoors, transplant them into small pots with high quality potting soil. Keep fully watered in a sunny space until weather permits transplanting outdoors.

• Before transplanting, seedlings need to be hardened off. Skipping this step will almost certainly result in some or all of your plants dying. Hardening off seedlings eases their transition to the outdoors, where they will be exposed to the elements. The process involves gradually exposing plants to the outdoors, protecting them from full sunlight, temperature variations • After outdoors, and wind. daily for • Don’t let sprouts get too big before especially transplanting them outdoors. • Save and reuse your seed starter tray for the next season. Once the spring plants have been transplanted outdoors, you will be free to get a head start on your summer crop. More tips to start your own seedlings can be found at www. Aerogarden.com. For true green thumb bragging rights, grow your garden from scratch. Just be sure you know the tricks of the trade.
