Charlie is a good name for an old fashioned gentleman, isn't it? Well, Charlie IS my name and that's me. I've experienced 11 years of love and happiness, but most recently loss and despair. My purrents were taken from me by no fault of their own and I miss them every day. At first, I thought life without them was unbearable until my new caretakers taught me that I still have many years of love to give to someone else who needs it as much as I do. If I had my way, I'd live the rest of my life in slow motion - a calm, quiet home with a family who enjoys the simpler things. You'll never hear me complain if I've got a patch of sunlight to lay in or a window to gaze out of, especially if my companions are close by for some much-appreciated affection. I will have to be on thyroid medication forever, but I'm a good boy about it and it'll keep us together that much longer.

We would like to

But Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that some of the more common heat stroke symptoms include: • headache, • dizziness, • disorientation, agitation, or confusion, • sluggishness or fatigue, • seizure, • hot, dry skin that is flushed but not sweaty, • high body temperature, • loss of consciousness, • rapid heartbeat, and • hallucinations.

Make campfires safe and enjoyable Who doesn’t look forward to sitting around a crackling campfire in the evening with family or friends? Such an experience attracts people to try camping, ultimately converting many of them into lifelong camping enthusiasts. Campfires serve various purposes, from heating up simple foods to keeping wildlife at bay. Campfires also light up camps where people dine and sleep while providing much-needed warmth. Campers must always exercise caution with their campfires. The University of Vermont Medical Center says 80 percent of pediatric campfire burns resulted from day-old campfires. The National Interagency Fire Center advises that, in 2017, 88 percent of wildfires were caused by humans. When building campfires, the following precautionary measures can ensure a safe time is had by all.

July 17, 2019

• Learn if it’s safe. Campground and other areas will post if the conditions are safe for a fire. Heed all signs and do not ignite a campfire if posted warnings say it is too dry and unsafe to do so. • Choose the right location. Look around and up to make sure that the fire will be in a safe location away from low-hanging branches or brush. Keep a radius of at least eight to 10 feet around the fire clear of tents, food, chairs, and other items, states the health and fitness resource Active.

Be aware of duff near the campsite and extinguish any embers promptly. • Maintain a close watch. Make sure at least one person is always tending to the campfire. • Keep kids and pets away. Set a proper distance for pets and young children who may not understand the dangers of fire.

• Extinguish the fire properly. Keep a shovel and water nearby to drown the fire and embers. Mix the ashes and water again to catch anything that may be smoldering. Continue adding water, dirt or • Add fuel only as needed. Keep the sand and stirring with a shovel fire at a manageable size and height. until all material is cool. Are You Doing Enough to Protect Your Skin From the Sun? (StatePoint) Think you’re doing enough to protect your skin from the sun? Don’t be so sure. Experts say that many people assume their sun protection routine is sufficient when it’s not. “While summer is an excellent reminder that sun protection is a vital component of health and wellness, it’s actually necessary all year round and under circumstances you may not realize,” says Floridabased dermatologist, Dr. Richard C. Kirkpatrick. Here are a few things to keep in mind: • Make-up may not be enough: If your makeup contains SPF 15, don’t assume you’re covered. Luckily, there are sun protection options today that leave a matte finish and won’t mess with your cosmetics routine. For example, an easy-to-apply, clear matte finish

layer of broad-spectrum protection under your makeup, such as Ocean Potion Face Zinc SPF 50, will add needed protection while nourishing skin.

• Think in all-day terms: Many people mistakenly believe they receive most of their sun exposure from going to the beach. It’s all too easy to underestimate the damage to skin from daily incidental sun

exposure, which accumulates and prematurely ages skin. Whether you’re driving and catching rays through the window, or walking the dog in the morning, be mindful that you’re getting sun exposure and
