COMING SOON... 2018 HOLIDAY

The Wish Book is full of holiday gift ideas that are sold locally and with an attractive catalog-style layout. Our Wish Book is something you will be excited to browse through this Holiday Season!

My name is Molly and I'm kind of a miracle. I'm only six years old, but if you'd seen me when I first came to the shelter, you'd never believe I'd make it this far! But here I am, healthier than ever and twice as plump! Between you and me though, I'll gladly do some more plumping if you're willing to supply the treats. As much I don't like this part, I need someone who'll make sure I get my thyroid medicine too. I feel so much better than I did in my old life and I never want to look back. There is ONE thing I love more than treats, and that's attention. I love to be loved and I have so much to give back to you that I'd prefer not to share my people with any other cats. If your calm home needs a Molly to liven it up, I'm your girl. I'm available to foster or adopt, but let's face it, there's no way you'll give me back!

charities looking to raise money to meet their missions. Time Time is another important factor for prospective volunteers to consider. Some volunteering opportunities require greater time commitments than others, and would-be volunteers must be honest with themselves when assessing how much time they have to offer. Volunteers without much time to offer should look for more flexible opportunities that require smaller time commitments, while those who have plenty of time on their hands can explore more extensive volunteering gigs. Goals Prospective volunteers should consider their reasons for volunteering and what they hope to gain from their experience before choosing an opportunity. Men and women who recently overcame an illness may find it most rewarding to work with an organization that raises awareness about that condition or disease. Parents who want to get their kids involved in volunteering should seek opportunities that allow youngsters to gain hands-on experience. Volunteering is a great way to give back to a community. The experience of volunteering can be that much more fulfilling when volunteers find an engaging activity.

ALL THINGS THANKSGIVING How to cook for people with various dietary needs Breaking bread with friends and family is the perfect recipe for a fun day or evening. However, even the most experienced party hosts may struggle with ways to cater to their guests’ various dietary restrictions. According to Food Allergy Research & Education organization, as many as 15 million Americans have food allergies. Research by a team of allergists at the McGill University Health Centre found that 7.5 percent of Canadians report having at least one food allergy.

also must consider diets, food sensitivities, religious preferences, and lifestyle choices (i.e., vegetarianism or veganism) when planning dinner party menus. So what is the accommodating host or hostess to do? Etiquette experts say that while it is important to keep guests’ preferences in mind, it is impossible to accommodate everyone. But hosts can take certain steps when planning a menu that might make it easier to cater to an array of eaters.

• Host a buffet or family-style meal. Buffets and family-style services provide plenty of options for guests to enjoy. Think about offering at least one item from all of the food groups, including vegetarians, vegans and those who In addition to food allergies, hosts vegetables that will fit the bill for may be avoiding grains. • Keep some trendy foods on hand. Consider current dietary trends and how likely your guests are to follow them. For example, investigate a few gluten-free options and some foods that are low in carbohydrates. Herb-crusted grilled chicken, roasted colorful vegetables in a ratatouille, a bean salad, and a three-cheese gourmet mac-andcheese are some simple crowdpleasers. • Offer a signature dish. In addition to “safe” menu items, showcase something you enjoy and like to prepare. After all, you should be able to enjoy the foods you love as well.

Some guests may come with food in hand. Graciously accept their additions and give credit • Stick to simple recipes. The more where credit is due. Gifts, Antiques & Consignment

DIRECTORY Brag-worthy grandparent gifts Seniors are situated at the top of the family tree, and grandparents have a lot of experience and knowledge to pass on to the generations who follow them.

• Photo slideshow: Turn old photographs into a digital legacy. Tech-savvy family members can scan prints of photos and upload them into slideshow programs. At the next family gathering, pair the computer or streaming subscription service to the television so that these photos can be viewed on loop.

Grandparents often do much for their families and, at various times — whether it’s the holiday season, birthdays or other special occasions — it’s time to repay grandparents for all they do. These ideas can become cherished gifts from the heart.

• Recipe collection: Pull together the family’s culinary legacy from old recipe cards, word-of-mouth instructions and more. Print or publish the recipe book and distribute to grandma or grandpa and other members of the family.

• Photo flip book: Thanks to the popularity of digital photos, families may no longer print out copies of their photographs. However, various apps from major photo-printing providers enable users to put together photo flip books and other photo gifts right from their smartphones that seniors will love.

• Special shadowbox: Create a shadow box of cherished mementos. If a loved one served in the military, was a beloved teacher or had a worthwhile hobby or other endeavor, gather pertinent items and arrange them in the shadowbox. With some forethought and ingenuity, it’s possible to come up with gifts for seniors that they’ll cherish for years to come.

• Plaster mold: Grandparents may enjoy crafting with youngsters, and making molds of hands or palm prints is a great craft idea. Hobby and craft stores have various kits at the ready for these types of projects. Afterward, the hardened mold can be painted, dated and signed for a lasting memento.

Prevent colds and flu before they start

November 7, 2018

researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, the influenza virus is more stable and can stay in the air longer when the air is cold and dry. Dr. Peter Palese, a flu researcher who is professor and chairman of the school’s microbiology department, examined guinea pigs infected with the flu virus to determine the connection between the flu and cold weather. Dr. Palese varied the air temperature and humidity in the guinea pigs’ environment and determined that flu transmission was best at 41 F, while the prevalence of transmission declined as the temperature rose. By the time temperatures reached 86 F, the virus was not transmitted at all. Low humidity also helped transmit the virus, and high humidity stopped the spread. Flu viruses spread through the air in water droplets expelled from sick individuals’ noses and mouths. High humidity may cause these droplets to fall to the ground before they can infect someone else.

Though the holiday season is a joyous time of year, it’s also one when many people succumb to cold and flu. Spending so much time indoors in close proximity to others can increase a person’s susceptibility to flu and cold, so it’s no surprise that the holiday season, when many people spend lots of time celebrating indoors with family and friends, marks the unofficial start to cold and flu season. Despite what Mom might have told you about going out into the cold with a wet head or leaving home without wearing a coat, such actions do not increase your risk for cold and flu. But being cooped up indoors, where germs from others who are sick can fester, can increase that risk.

virus or direct contact with a sick individual. The cold virus is then contracted on the hands and typically transferred to the nose, eyes or mouth through inadvertent touching of these areas. Spending time indoors in close quarters with other people, which is more common in the winter, can facilitate the spread of colds as well as the flu virus. There are many ways to reduce your risk of contracting a cold or the flu virus this winter. Perhaps no preventive measure is more effective than getting a flu shot. In addition, wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs, and disinfect remote controls, computer keyboards, tablets, mobile phones, and other items that are handled by multiple people on any given day. In addition, spend as much time outdoors as possible so you can escape potentially contaminated indoor air.

open, using a recreational aquarium or boiling pots of water. Maintain a warm indoor temperature to reduce the likelihood that the flu virus will spread.

Other ways to reduce your risk for cold and flu include: • maintaining a healthy diet If you come down with the flu, • getting several minutes of sunlight Colds are largely transmitted increase the humidity in your home per day through surface contact with the by running the shower with the door • exercising regularlly

Cold weather also can be a factor, but not for the reason you think. According to a 2007 study from
