8 Key phrases: My Music Isn’t Yours Read the text “My Music Isn’t Yours” on pages 16–17 in your Textbook. The four teenagers have different tastes in music. How do they express themselves? Find these phrases in English, in the text. 1 Jag håller med dig. 2 Det är verkligen den sortens musik som jag gillar. 3 Hiphop får mig att må illa. 4 Jag gillar inte ”rhythm and blues” heller. 5 Men lägg av, mina farföräldrar gillar ju dem! 6 Det är din uppfattning! 7 Vad synd! 8 Jag lyssnar på klassisk musik då och då. 9 Du gillar lite av varje.

9 Learn new words Pick words from Section 1 that you want to learn.

10

Learn how to pronounce and spell the words.

Explain the words in English (use them in sentences).

Suggest synonyms or antonyms (if possible).

State their word classes.

Look up their translations.

15 After reading: New Listening Habits Read the text on pages 20–21 in your Textbook. Now, make a timeline showing the changes in listening habits starting in 1897. Write like this: 1897

Marconi invented the radio

1950s

Transistor radios

1979 ... 1980s ... 1999–2001 ... 2004 ... 2014 ...

16 Analyze lyrics Pick a song that you know which is about something specific (like love, music, having fun etc.). Analyze its lyrics by answering these questions: 1 Are there any difficult words in the song? Look them up. 2 Look at the structure of the song:

a) How many verses are there? b) How long is the chorus (refräng)? c) How many times is the chorus repeated? 3 Do the lines rhyme? If so, give examples. 4 What word or phrase is the most important in the song, do you think? 5 What is the song’s theme or message?

17 After reading: I Live off Royalties Read the text on pages 22–24 in your Textbook. Then answer these questions. Find information in the text or on the Internet to support (stödja) your answers. 1 How do we know that Will is not always honest? 2 How is Will’s sense of humour commented on? 3 Explain how Will earns his living. 4 Do the songs mentioned in the text exist in real life?

Search the Internet to find out.

5 Will hated making his living from Val Doonican. Who is, or was,

Val Doonican? Why do you think Will doesn’t like him? Search the Internet to find out.

18 Reading strategies Certain strategies can help you improve your understanding of a text. Answer these questions before reading any text in the unit, and then answer them again after you have read the text. Compare your answers. Before reading 1 What type of text is this? (Is it an article, a letter, a poem, etc.?

Guess by looking at the language and the layout.)

2 Who has written the text? (Look for an author’s name or skim

the introduction.)

3 What is the text about? (Guess by looking at the heading and

at the images.)

After reading 1 What type of text is this? 2 Who has written the text? 3 What is the text about?

Listening (reception) 19A Spell the words You are going to listen to ten words being spelled out. All the words are taken from the list on pages 10–11 in your Textbook. Write down the words. You may listen more than once. The alphabet on page 149 can help you.

B Work with a partner. Choose ten words each from the list on page 11 in your Textbook. Take turns spelling out the words to each other in English.

20 A song Pick a song that you like. Print out its lyrics and remove some of the words. Make copies and give the lyrics (with gaps) to your classmates. Play the song and get your classmates to fill in the missing words.

21 The audition (WS 2) John Wilkes, a famous film director, is planning to make a new musical. He needs a boy and a girl to play the leading roles. He has asked local radio stations all over the country to help him in his search. Charley is a disc jockey on Radio Wings. He has asked young people with special talents to phone the radio station. Charley filled out a form for each caller. Mandy was the first caller. 1 Listen and see how Charley

filled in Mandy’s form.

2 Read Worksheet 2 while

you listen. Fill in the blanks for Charley when he talks to the next two callers.

Speaking (production) 22 A jumbled dialogue (WS 3) Work with a partner. On Worksheet 3 you will find a dialogue where the lines are in the wrong order. •

Read each line.

Write down the dialogue correctly in your notebook. Start with the line written in bold.

Read the dialogue with your partner until you know it well and can act it out in class.

23 Crosswords (WS 4) Work with a partner. Choose one or more of the crosswords on Worksheet 4. You use part A and your partner uses part B. The words in part A are missing in part B, and vice versa. In English, describe the words that you have in order to help each other fill in the blanks. Take turns describing one word at a time.

24 Two pictures (WS 5) Work with a partner. One of you looks at picture A on Worksheet 5 and the other looks at picture B. Discuss and compare your pictures and try to spot the differences (there are five!)

25 Picture cards (WS 1AB) On Worksheets 1A and 1B you will find 40 cards with pictures of things related to music. Cut out the cards. Work with one or two partners and divide the cards between you. For Some ideas for using the cards see exercise 4 on page 8.

Writing (production) 32 What instruments do they play? Look at the pictures and write a sentence about each person. E.g.: Mohamed plays the drums.

33 Sentences about music Study the verbs on page 11 in your Textbook. Using them, write at least five sentences about music. If you have time, first write five sentences in the present tense (presens) and then write five sentences in the past tense (preteritum).

34 Who is this? Make a list of five or six well-known artists. Then, write down a few clues related to each one. Use exercise 10 for ideas. Now, have a partner read your clues and guess the artists.

35 A mini-biography Search the Internet for information about a singer or a group that you like. Then, write a mini-biography about your artist. The text about Adele on pages 12–13 can be helpful. Don’t forget to list your sources (where you have found your information).

Suggestion! Start and end your email with correct greetings phrases: Dear…, Hi…; Best Wishes or Yours Sincerely. In an email you can choose whether to be formal or not.

37 A list of facts On page 19 in your Textbook you’ll find facts about the Glastonbury Festival. Now, search the Internet for news about the latest Glastonbury Festival and write your own facts, including the biggest artists, number of visitors, dates, etc. Don’t forget to list your sources (where you have found your information).

38 A survey Complete exercise 27 (interviewing at least five students). Make a graph or a table which illustrates their answers. Discuss the results with two or three classmates.

39 Write questions With a partner, read one of the texts in Section 1. Write at least five questions each, which can be answered with information in the text. Now, swap questions and write answers to each other’s questions.

2015-03-30 20:30

40 Write a review The text about the Glastonbury Festival on page 18 in your Textbook is a review. Now, write your own review of a film or an album. Include: •

a short plot summary (sammanfattning); or mention a few songs on the album,

your own opinion,

a comparison (jämförelse) with another film or album,

a rating on a 5-star scale.

Do you think other people will agree with your review? Why or why not?

41 Write a description Read the extract from the novel “About a Boy” on pages 22–24 in your Textbook. Write down all the facts you get in the text about Marcus and Will. Then write a description of them. Don’t forget to mention: •

The outside: age, gender, looks, family relations

The inside: feelings, attitudes, behaviour, opinions and personal abilities

42 The author and his works The text “I Live off Royalties…” is an extract from the novel “About a Boy”, written by Nick Hornby. Search the Internet for information about the author and one of his books that has been made into a film. Collect facts and present your findings on a poster.
