7B The long walk Pre-reading

1 Read the extract from the fact sheet.

THE STOLEN GENERATIONS

In Australia, it was official government policy from 1909 to 1969 to remove children with one white and one Aboriginal parent from their families. The parents had no say and no court order was needed. At the time, the Aboriginals were seen as an inferior race, and the idea was to make sure that Aboriginal people should become assimilated into society. The children should be brought up ‘white’. They were placed in institutions and from the 1950s also with white families. There they were trained to become workers or servants, and the education they had was very poor. Some people believed that Aboriginal people lived poor lives, and that removing the children was the right thing to do. They

thought that Aboriginal people were bad parents, and that Aboriginal women did not look after their children the way they should. No one knows how many children were taken, as most records have been lost or destroyed. Many parents never saw their children again, and brothers and sisters were deliberately separated from each other. Today many Aboriginal people still do not know who their relatives are, and they haven’t been able to track them down. These children became known as the Stolen Generations. Today there are Aboriginal people as young as thirty or forty years old who belong to the Stolen Generations.

2 Mark the sentences with T (True) or F (False). 1 T he article tells what happened in Australia during the first part of the 20th century. 2 A boriginal parents thought it was a good thing that their children were raised as ‘whites’. 3 The Aboriginal children were given a good education. 4 Aboriginal people didn’t know how to raise their children. 5 The lack of records means many Aboriginals don’t know who their relatives are. 6 The children who were removed didn’t live with their brothers or sisters. 7 A lthough the government policy has changed, what happened still affects a lot of people living today.
