T H EA R TO F L E A R NI NG AL A N G UA G E

To learn a language takes time and lots of effort. To get better at English, you need to get a larger active vocabulary.

You have to see and hear words to learn them. The more times you see and hear the words, the more likely you are to learn them.

The very best activity for seeing the same words over and over again is reading. You learn words when you read, but if you just read, you need to read a lot.

To see and hear words in different contexts, it is good to read and listen to many different sources.

It is common to forget new words. Repetition is key. If the new words are in a textbook, then review the words after the lesson several times. If you practise using the words repeatedly, you will remember them better.

Learn the most common words in English because this is the vocabulary you use most often.

A good way to practise words is to write sentences with the words. This way, you get to practise using the word in different forms, which is important for vocabulary.

4
effort ansträngning the more likely desto troligare är det contexts sammanhang sources källor common vanligt forget glömma key nyckeln review gå igenom, repetera several times flera gånger repeatedly flera gånger sentences meningar

If you are active in your learning instead of passive, you will learn more words. You will also have a better chance of remembering the words and making them part of your active vocabulary (words that you both understand and use).

Remember that learning a new language takes time, but having grit and practising every day will help you reach your goals.

Here are some tips on how to learn words (your teacher has more and there are more in the workbook, too).

Put the words into sentences.

Write definitions and explanations.

Explain words in other words.

Make a picture wordlist.

Make flash cards.

Spell the word.

Born in Space

My name is Bonnie, and I was born on a spaceship. My ship is the colony ship Adventure. There were three colony ships sent from Earth 14 years ago. I was born 12 years ago. I am the only person born on the Adventure. I guess if you weren’t born on a spaceship, you might think that it is exciting. And it is. Sometimes.

Most of the time, it is boring. There are not many places to play, and I study all the time. I must learn math and languages, but also farming, engineering, and all the other things we need to help us survive. The other colonists are farmers, doctors, scientists and some other professions I barely understand. Mom and Dad are both farmers.

The Adventure to Harmony –Prologue

The year is 2382. You probably know our history. The world had problems with the climate crisis. Many people moved to the North and South Poles to survive. But then some very clever inventions happened. We learned to grow trees that could catch sun light and turn it into electricity. We made the waters of the oceans clean and polluted waters sweet to drink. We cleaned up all the plastic. Slowly the world became healthy.

We didn’t have to abandon a sick planet to survive, we could go into space to explore new worlds. We looked up into space with new telescopes and we found three planets that had good atmospheres. First, robot ships were sent ahead to prepare the planets for our arrival. And then, three colony ships were built: The Adventure, The Morning Star and The Bright Hope. The Adventure was the first to leave. The Adventure is traveling to a planet called XJ42.

Tomorrow, we will arrive! I can’t wait. I don’t know what it is like to walk on a planet. I’ve never done it before. I am very excited to be one of the first human beings to live on another planet.

After r e ading

• What do you think it would be like to live on a spaceship? Would you like it or not? Give reasons for your answer.

• What do you think is a good name for a spaceship?

• Bonnie gives three examples of how humanity helped the Earth. Can you think of other things that might happen in the future that could help with problems?

The Lawson Family Moves Abroad

Do you remember the Lawson Family from last year?

Leah and Amir are busy with school, friends, hobbies and the cat, Zoe. Jack works and takes care of the garden. What about Nana? Well, she misses her daughter, Rose, and her grandchildren who live in the United States. She decides to move to the United States for a year.

Leah What an adventure! I also want to move to the USA for a year. Can I come with you, Nana?

Nana I don’t know about that …

Leah Please, dad! Can I go with Nana and stay with aunt Rose and my cousins?

Jack I think it’s best you stay here.

Leah But why? Think about how fun it is to experience new places and things and meet new people.

Jack I want us to keep the family together.

Leah Can’t we all go, then?

Jack It is not so easy to move to another country. We have our house, my job, your school and the cat.

Amir I don’t want to leave my friends.

The discussion continues for days. It all ends with them deciding together to move to aunt Rose for a year. They have tons of things to do before the move. They need to pack all the things they want to take with them, rent the house out, get jobs, schools, passports and arrange to bring Zoe. Even Amir, who doesn’t like big changes, is looking forward to this new family adventure.

They leave the U.K in July. Rose lives in a town called Wenham in the state of Massachusetts in the northeast of the USA. Th e first few weeks they stay with aunt Rose’s family before they

find a place of their own. They are having the time of their lives. They go swimming at Crane Beach, they go whale watching in Gloucester, they visit Boston and they drive around to get to know the area. Amir is worried at first but soon starts to enjoy it, even though he doesn’t admit it.

Leah and Amir have made big changes during the summer. We hope that you have enjoyed your summer break, and that it has been a lot of fun. Th is year we will follow the Lawson family as they live in the US.

• Your classmate guesses. It has to be an animal your friend can see in the pictures. “Is it an eagle?”

• You classmate guesses again: “Is it an elephant?”
