Good to know Sometimes we feel embarrassed because there are situations where our English isn’t good enough. Well, nobody is perfect – and don’t hesitate to ask for help.
Scene 1 (in the street)
Irishman Excuse me, where’s the Round Table, please? Londoner Sorry? Irishman The Round Table, the restaurant. 5
Londoner Oh, it’s in West Street. It’s just round the corner. Irishman Thank you very much. Londoner You’re welcome. Enjoy your meal.
Scene 2 (at the restaurant)
Waiter
Good afternoon. Today’s special offer is bangers and mash.

All right. Hot dogs and mashed potatoes then.
Foreigner OK. I’ll have that, please. 15
Scene 3 (reading a sign in the park)
Young girl DOGS MUST BE KEPT ON A LEASH. What does ‘leash’ mean? Woman

More to know If you go to the UK, for example on a language course, there are a number of things that are good to know. Don’t take Sweden to England - that is a good model to go by. It means that you can’t expect the English to behave like Swedes. Instead, do as the English do:
5
You seldom see English people take off their shoes when they visit somebody. That has nothing to do with sweaty feet … At table, you will often find that your host or hostess serves you the dinner. But don’t expect a glass of milk with your meal.
10
Never say thanks after a nice dinner. Just say you liked it. A good phrase is “The food was delicious” or just “Mmm, that was good”.
15
English people don’t shake hands as often as we do, at least not when they leave. Just lift your hand and say, “Thanks for a nice evening”, “See you tomorrow” or something like that. Don’t take long showers if you are staying with a family. Hot water is expensive.
20
If you are a girl, be prepared that the boys around you insist on paying for your cinema ticket and so on. That’s just the way it is (and good for the girls)!
20
twenty
4
The queuing system in the UK is very strict. Never ever try to squeeze in if there is a line of people waiting at a bus stop. Always stand on the right on escalators, so that people who are in a hurry can pass you. That is very important. 5
10
Be careful when you are out walking. People drive on the left in the UK so make sure that you look both right and left before you cross the street! Finally, maybe the most important thing to remember: Say ‘Please’ and ‘Thank you’ as much as you can. ‘Yes, please’ and ‘No, thank you’ are beautiful words for British ears!

Chatting down under Jonathan Stankovic is 13 and lives in Sydney, the biggest city in Australia. One day he gets a request on MSN from three Swedish girls. They are working on a school project and want to know a lot of things about Australia. Jonathan accepts their request (Who says no to three Swedish girls?), clicks OK and the conversation starts …
(Chatting on MSN:)
The girls: Hi, Jonathan. Jonathan: G’day, as we say in Australia. The girls: What time is it in Sydney? 5
Jonathan: It’s eight o’clock in the evening. The girls: It’s eleven in the morning in Sweden. You’re nine hours ahead! Jonathan: Everything’s ahead down under! The girls: Ha, ha. We’ve got a few questions to ask.
10
Jonathan: I’m listening. The girls: Here we go. Is it true that there were only convicts living in Australia two hundred years ago?
15
Jonathan: Yes – and no. James Cook ‘discovered’ the continent in 1785, I think, and Britain sent shiploads of convicts that they wanted to get rid of. The girls: And the no …?
34

The famous opera house in Sydney.
8 Jonathan: When Cook came to Australia, the Aboriginals had been there for thousands of years! The girls: Tell us more about them.
5
Jonathan: Many of them are poor and can’t get a job. It’s a pity really! The girls: Sorry to hear that. What about you? Your name doesn’t look British.
10
Jonathan: No, my grandparents immigrated many years ago from former Yugoslavia. Today Australia is multicultural with people from, for example, Greece, Italy, Germany and Asia. The girls: Australia looks big! Jonathan: Yeah, but more than two thirds are desert or dry bushland. In some places it doesn’t rain for years!
15
Aboriginal in front of Uluru (Ayers Rock).
The girls: Like at Ayers Rock? Jonathan: So you’ve heard about it – the world’s biggest ‘stone’? Then I guess you also know that it’s a holy place for the Aboriginals?
20
The girls: Is it? No, we didn’t know. Right, what can you tell us about the Great Barrier Reef? Jonathan: It’s the greatest place on Earth! The water’s very clear and there are so many things to see if you dive or snorkel.
25
The girls: Sounds nice. Well, we’ve got to stop now. Can we ask you about animals tomorrow? Jonathan: Sure. Keep in touch.

The ozone layer Have you heard about the dangerous ‘hole’ in the ozone layer? The Australians live with it every day …
5
10 – 50 kilometres above the Earth there is a layer of ozone gas. It is very important as it protects us from too much ultra-violet (UV) rays. You see, the UV rays harm your eyes, cause skin cancer and kill plants and animals. Above Australia and New Zealand in particular, the layer is so thin that people call it a ‘hole’.
How do the Australians handle the problem? 10
15
People down under have to stay in the shade as much as possible, or cover their bodies with sun lotion. So it is not popular among Australians to lie in the sun to get suntanned! Another interesting thing is that there are special watches for kids, for example. The watches tell them when they have been in the sun for too long.
36
thirty-six
8
But how do we know when the layer is thin?
5
Well, we can study the penguins in the Antarctic where the layer is also thin. We can find out how much vitamin D there is in their blood. The more UV rays, the more vitamin D in the blood.
Finally, why is the ozone layer thin?
10
We all use too many chemicals that destroy the layer, chemicals that you find in fridges, aerosol sprays, some air conditioning systems, well, even in hamburger boxes! So now everybody tries hard to develop better products to save the world! And, at last, the layer is recovering – but very slowly.

Old enough? Cathy Wilson turned 13 last month and she finds life as a teenager rather confusing. Dad
Cathy! Could you give me a hand and clear the table, please.
Cathy
But I’m going to see Jessica. Don’t you remember?
Dad
Just clear the table first, honey. It’ll only take a minute. You’re old enough to take care of some of the housework now. And I must also remind you to clean the bathroom before you leave.
Cathy
Oh Dad! Listen. We’re going to watch “Murder in L.A.” and it starts at eight.
Dad
“Murder in L.A.”? That’s a horrible film - lots of violence and blood. It’s a film for adults and you’re just kids!

10 Cathy
Kids? I’m a teenager! Have you forgotten?? A minute ago you said I was old enough to do housework, but now I’m too young to watch a film that all my classmates watch. It’s very confusing, Dad, and unfair!
Dad
Calm down, Cathy! It’s only seven o’clock. There’s plenty of time.
Cathy
OK, boss. I’ll clear the table and then clean the bathroom. I’m not too young for that obviously …
10
Dad
Do you know what? I saw three or four kids from your school on my way home today, all with cigarettes. Disgusting, isn’t it? And sooo dangerous! Why don’t young people understand? Don’t you ever, ever start smoking, Cathy!
15
Cathy
Of course not. I belong to the non-smoking generation.
5
Half an hour later Cathy has finished the bathroom and enters the kitchen again. Cathy
Dad. You left your cigarettes in the bathroom. But don’t worry. I’ve flushed them down the toilet. It’s silly to smoke, it’s expensive and it’s sooo dangerous! You’re old enough to understand that now, right? I care for you, Dad! And I love you. I’m off now. The film starts at eight and I don’t want to be late. Bye.
Dad
Bye, honey!
Cathy
Sorry?
Dad
Love you too!

Teen Magazine Teenagers write about their problems to Bob in Teen Magazine. 1 Dear Bob, I’ve got a problem. My dad’s always going on about my hairstyle. I’ve got quite long hair and he doesn’t like it at all. He wants me to have short hair because he had short hair when he was my age. He’s so old-fashioned! When I tell him that I want to keep my long hair, he just tells me to obey. He says that I’m not old enough to decide. What can I do? Benjamin, 14
2 Hello, I think I’m in love with a nineteen-year-old boy. We chat on the computer for hours every day after school. We like the same music and the same films. He seems very nice. Now he wants to see me, and he believes that I’m nineteen too. The problem is that I’m only thirteen. I’m a liar and he doesn’t know. Help me! I’m so unhappy! “Vic, the liar”

3 I need your help, Bob! I’m afraid my best friend (her name’s Mel) doesn’t like me any more. I feel so uncertain. When we’re together just the two of us, she’s always nice and caring. But every time when Lizzi (she’s not even a classmate!) comes along, they’re only interested in each other and I feel sort of left out. I guess (I’m sure) she talks behind my back too. I’ve known her since we were five. I don’t want to lose her. Please, tell me what to do! Peggy L
4 BOB!!! There’s a new girl in my class. She’s very nice and sweet. I guess I’m in love with her. I have never felt like this before and I can’t concentrate on school. I think of her both night and day. I really want to know her better, but I’m too shy to talk to her. Can I use my mobile and text her? Please, Bob! I need your advice! Andy, 13
