We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on this page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.

As we approach the kickoff of a new school year, we encourage everyone to find some ways to plug into ministry. The music program invites all children and adults to consider singing in our choirs, either Choristers or the Saint Michael Choir. This is a big month for service through Jubilee Park and Community Center and Foster Elementary, just to name a few. In addition, the Men of Saint Michael (MOSM) and the Women of Saint Michael (WOSM) are kicking off their new programming year and you’re invited to join them! To sign up to help with our service, or for more about our ministry programs, please pick up a copy of the Sunday News

As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

The Word of God

Prelude

Sarabande David Ashley White

Welcome

Entering Procession (standing, sung by all) Hymn 366 v. 1, 3, 5

“Holy God, we praise thy Name” Grosser Gott

The Opening Acclamation (standing)

Celebrant Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

Celebrant There is one Body and one Spirit;

People There is one hope in God’s call to us;

Celebrant One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism.

People One God and Father of all.

Song of Praise (standing, sung by all) Hymn S 280

“Glory to God”

The Collect of the Day (standing)

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Let us pray.

Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

This expressive piece combines a soaring, lyrical melody with lush accompaniment. The music builds to a full organ climax in the middle, then fades to tranquility at the end.

Children ages three through eight are invited to meet a member of our ministry staff by the pulpit to be escorted to children’s chapel; they will return to the congregation following the Peace.

Chanted by the Choir to a psalm setting by C.

The Lesson (seated)

Jeremiah 23:23-29

Am I a God near by, says the LORD, and not a God far off? Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them? says the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? says the LORD. I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in my name, saying, “I have dreamed, I have dreamed!” How long? Will the hearts of the prophets ever turn back—those who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart?

The y plan to make my people forget my name by their dreams that they tell one another, just as their ancestors forgot my name for Baal. Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let the one who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat? says the LORD. Is not my word like fire, says the LORD, and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?

Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

The Psalm (seated) Psalm 82

God takes his stand in the council of heaven; * he gives judgment in the midst of the gods:

“How long will you judge unjustly, * and show favor to the wicked?

Save the weak and the orphan; * defend the humble and needy; Rescue the weak and the poor; * deliver them from the power of the wicked. The y do not know, neither do they understand; they go about in darkness; * all the foundations of the earth are shaken. Now I say to you, ‘You are gods, * and all of you children of the Most High; Nevertheless, you shall die like mortals, * and fall like any prince’.”

Hylton Stewart.

Arise, O God, and rule the earth, * for you shall take all nations for your own.

Sequence Hymn (standing, sung by all) Hymn 632, v.1

“O Christ, the Word Incarnate” Munich

The Gospel (standing) Luke 12:49-56

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said, “I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it is completed! Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! From now on five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three; they will be divided: father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.” He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, ‘It is going to rain’; and so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat’; and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?”

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Celebrant We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. O ver it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life.

We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior.

To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and g lory, now and for ever. Amen.

Offertory Anthem (sung by the Saint Michael Choir)

What Wondrous Love is This Geoff Weaver

What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul!

What wondrous love is this, O my soul!

What wondrous love is this, that caused the Lord of bliss

To bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul,

To bear the dreadful curse for my soul.

To God and to the Lamb, I will sing, I will sing;

To God and to the Lamb, I will sing.

To God and to the Lamb who is the great I AM,

While millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing, While millions join the theme I will sing.

And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on, And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on.

And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing and joyful be, And through eternity I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on, And through eternity I’ll sing on.

His accessible yet expressive sacred settings favor flowing melodies and carefully crafted harmonies; this hymn arrangement evokes reverence and devotion.

All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper.

Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to g ive thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The Sanctus and Benedictus (standing, sung by all) Hymn S 130 “Holy, holy, holy”

Please kneel as you are able.

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to e vil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: All Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and g lory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread (standing, sung by all) Hymn S 164 “Jesus, Lamb of God”

Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.

Please note, our Communion rail kneelers are out for repair; you are encouraged to stand at the Communion rails to receive Communion.

This tender aria from Cantata 159 is Johann Sebastian Bach’s second meditation on the words “Es ist vollbracht”—and no less moving than the first in his St John Passion for alto. Sung here by the bass, it sits at the emotional heart of the cantata: Christ’s suffering is complete, and the soul responds in peace and gratitude. Set against Luke’s Gospel, where Jesus declares he brings not peace but division, this aria offers a paradoxical stillness—one born not of avoidance, but of costly obedience. Bach’s use of harmonic softness, warmth, and the oboe’s plaintive line, reminds us that in the fire of judgment, grace is still possible.

Communion Anthem (sung by the Saint Michael Choir)

It is finished!

The pain is over, Made righteous through Christ, Now I hasten to give thanks, World, goodbye! It is finished!

The Post-Communion Prayer (standing, spoken by all)

Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Blessing (standing)

The Dismissal (standing)

Deacon Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Departing Procession (standing, sung by all) Hymn 287 v. 1-4

“For all the saints, who from their labors rest” Sine Nomine

In BWV 589, Johann Sebastian Bach masterfully blends two leading compositional models, maintaining the stately, solemn Stile Antico while incorporating modern elements such as modulations and chromatic runs.

The foregoing text of the worship service contained in this order of worship is taken from the Book of Common Prayer 1979.
