SAINT MICHAEL

and All Angels Episcopal Church

The Twenty-Second Sunday After Pentecost November 9, 2025

11 AM TRADITIONAL Saint Michael Chapel

WELCOME

FROM THE RECTOR

The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata

We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on this page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.

This year, we’re asking all our members to commit to their discipleship life through pledges of financial and service support. Your annual financial support deepens your discipleship commitment and helps us expand our missional impact inside and outside our walls. Additionally, your annual service pledge roots you to the life of our church in a very tangible way!

Tonight, join us for our annual Veterans Day Worship Service at 5:30 p.m. Bring your friends and neighbors and join us in saying “Thank You!” to our Veterans and pay special tribute to the military veterans of our church family, along with those currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. Please also grab a Sunday News handout if you haven’t already and join us for our special programming whenever you can.

As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

Hymn S 202

Johann T Lemckert, a leading figure in Dutch organ music, served as organist-titularis of the Grote Laurenskerk in Rotterdam from 1969 to 2006, where he championed both liturgical and concert repertoire on its three Marcussen organs. He taught at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, shaping a generation of organists. Among his honors are the Prix d’Excellence and the silver medal Arts, Sciences et Lettres from Paris. “Louange” translates to “praise” or “adoration” in English, evoking feelings of admiration and respect.

O God, whose blessed Son was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant us, we beseech thee, that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves even as he is pure; that, when he shall appear again with power and great glory, we may be made like

unto him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where with thee, O Father, and thee, O Holy Ghost, he liveth and reigneth ever, one God, world without end. Amen.

The First Lesson (seated) Job 19:23-27a

Job said, “O that my words were written down! O that they were inscribed in a book! O that with an iron pen and with lead they were engraved on a rock forever! For I know that my Redeemer lives, and that at the last he will stand upon the earth; and after my skin has been thus destroyed, then in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see on my side, and my eyes shall behold, and not another.”

Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

The Psalm (seated) Psalm 17:1-9

Hear my plea of innocence, O LORD; give heed to my cry; * listen to my prayer, which does not come from lying lips. Let my vindication come forth from your presence; * let your eyes be fixed on justice. Weigh my heart, summon me by night, * melt me down; you will find no impurity in me.

I g ive no offense with my mouth as others do; * I have heeded the words of your lips.

My footsteps hold fast to the ways of your law; * in your paths my feet shall not stumble. I call upon you, O God, for you will answer me; * incline your ear to me and hear my words.

Show me your marvelous loving-kindness, *

O Savior of those who take refuge at your right hand from those who rise up against them. Keep me as the apple of your eye; * hide me under the shadow of your wings, From the wicked who assault me, * from my deadly enemies who surround me.

The Second Lesson (seated)

2 Thessalonians 2:1-5, 13-17

As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we beg you, brothers and sisters, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as though from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here. Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction. He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God. Do you not remember that I told you these things when I was still with you? … But we must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. For this purpose he called you through our proclamation of the good news, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter. Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and g ood hope, comfort your hearts and strengthen them in e very good work and word.

Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Sequence Hymn (standing, sung by all)

“Jesus lives!” St. Albinus

The Gospel (standing)

Hymn 194, v. 1

Luke 20:27-38

Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory be to thee, O Lord.

Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and asked him a question, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother. Now there were seven brothers; the first married, and died childless; then the second and the third married her, and so in the same way all seven died childless. Finally the woman also died. In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had married her.” Jesus said to them, “Those who belong to this age marry and are given in marriage; but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. Indeed they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection. And the fact that the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive.”

Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise be to thee, O Christ.

The Sermon (seated)

The Nicene Creed (standing)

The Rt. Rev. Wayne Smith Assisting Bishop of Dallas

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People: Form I (standing)

Celebrant Let us pray for the Church and for the world.

Lector With all our heart and with all our mind, let us pray to the Lord, saying “Lord, have mercy.”

“Holy, holy, holy”

Please kneel as you are able.

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, for that thou didst create heaven and earth, and didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for

All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper.

Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again.

For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

L ikewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.”

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the Body and Blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord;

By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Hymn 341

All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.

Richard Farrant, who worked in the Chapel Royal and at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, was a key figure in early English choral music. This classic anthem highlights the period’s focus on textual clarity, with transparent, expressive vocal lines that allow the prayerful words to shine. It is a moving example of how early Church of England composers combined musical beauty with liturgical purpose.

Communion Anthem (sung by the Saint Michael Choir)

Lord for Thy Tender Mercy’s Sake Richard Farrant

Lord, for thy tender mercy’s sake, lay not our sins to our charge, but forgive that is past and give us grace to amend our sinful lives; to decline from sin and incline to virtue, that we may walk in a perfect heart before thee now and evermore.

- Lidley’s Prayers (1566)

The Post-Communion Prayer (kneeling, spoken by all)

Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.
