The Psalm (seated) Psalm 17:1-9
Hear my plea of innocence, O LORD; give heed to my cry; * listen to my prayer, which does not come from lying lips. Let my vindication come forth from your presence; * let your eyes be fixed on justice.
Weigh my heart, summon me by night, * melt me down; you will find no impurity in me.
I g ive no offense with my mouth as others do; * I have heeded the words of your lips.
My footsteps hold fast to the ways of your law; * in your paths my feet shall not stumble.
I call upon you, O God, for you will answer me; * incline your ear to me and hear my words. Show me your marvelous loving-kindness, * O Savior of those who take refuge at your right hand from those who rise up against them. Keep me as the apple of your eye; * hide me under the shadow of your wings, From the wicked who assault me, * from my deadly enemies who surround me.

The Gospel (standing) Luke 20:27-38
Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.
Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and asked him a question, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us
Chanted by the Choir to a psalm setting by Herbert Howells.
Candidates rise as they are presented.
that if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother. Now there were seven brothers; the first married, and died childless; then the second and the third married her, and so in the same way all seven died childless. Finally the woman also died. In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had married her.” Jesus said to them, “Those who belong to this age marry and are given in marriage; but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. Indeed they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection. And the fact that the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive.”

The Holy Communion
Offertory Anthem (sung by the Saint Michael Choir)
Ave Virgo sanctissima Francisco Guerrero
Ave Virgo sanctissima, Dei Mater piissima, maris stella clarissima.
Salve semper gloriosa, margarita pretiosa, sicut lilium formosa, nitens olens velut rosa.
Hail, most holy Virgin, Most loving Mother of God, Brightest star of the sea. Hail, ever glorious, Precious pearl, Beautiful as the lily, Shining and fragrant like the rose.
- Anonymous, Old Spanish antiphon for Nativity of St. John the Baptist Francisco Guerrero, a prominent Spanish Renaissance composer, was renowned for his devotion to the Virgin Mary, earning him the moniker “El cantor de María.” His motet “Ave Virgo Sanctissima” exemplifies his mastery of sacred choral music, characterized by serene polyphonic texture and expressive vocal lines that reflect his deep reverence for the Virgin Mary. The piece became so popular during Guerrero’s lifetime that it was regarded as the quintessential Marian motet and used as a parody model by many composers, including Flemish contemporaries.

Sanctus and Benedictus (standing, sung by all) Hymn S 129
“Holy, holy, holy”
Please kneel as you are able.
We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.
On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and g ave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper.
Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.
At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore, according to his command, O Father,
All We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;
And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.
We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these g ifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Saint Michael and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.
By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Communion Anthem (sung by the Saint Michael Choir)
Lord for Thy Tender Mercy’s Sake Richard Farrant
Lord, for thy tender mercy’s sake, lay not our sins to our charge, but forgive that is past and give us grace to amend our sinful lives; to decline from sin and incline to virtue, that we may walk in a perfect heart before thee now and evermore.
- Lidley’s Prayers (1566)
The Post-Communion Prayer (kneeling, spoken by all)
Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord.
All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.
Richard Farrant, who worked in the Chapel Royal and at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, was a key figure in early English choral music. This classic anthem highlights the period’s focus on textual clarity, with transparent, expressive vocal lines that allow the prayerful words to shine. It is a moving example of how early Church of England composers combined musical beauty with liturgical purpose.
Brenda Portman is an American organist and composer, currently serving as Resident Organist at Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. She is a prize-winning performer and has composed extensively for organ, with a focus on accessible yet artistically engaging liturgical music. Portman highlights the tune’s bold, ascending character through rhythmic vitality, colorful registration, and inventive harmonies.
