Liturgical Reflections with The Compline Choir
The season of Pentecost is arguably one of the most transformative periods within our church. It is a time for us to center ourselves, find connection among our neighbors, and –most importantly – to lean in and listen to the voice of God. In the midst of this season, The Compline Choir will be offering a compline service entitled, Flaming Tongues, focusing on the transformative, and vibrant power of the Holy Spirit. The service will feature a diverse selection of choral works, sung in multiple languages, reflecting the unity of communities kindled by the Holy Spirit, and the power of serving together for a greater purpose.
Our choral landscape will include remarkable works such as James MacMillan’s Factus est repente (Latin), capturing the dramatic arrival of the Spirit; Johann Pachelbel’s Nun Danket alle Gott (German), a hymn of thanksgiving; Andrej Makor’s Spaseniye sodelal (Slavonic), celebrating salvation; and Moses Hogan’s My Soul’s Been Anchored in the Lord (English), an anthem of enduring faith.
James MacMillan is the pre-eminent Scottish composer of our time. His works are cornstones of theologically robust choral repertoire, offering dialogue on the micro and macrocosmic effects of faith in the modern era. This specific work, Factus est repente (“Suddenly it came”), was written as a motet for the Pentecostal season and sets Acts 2: 2, 4 in a flaming choral whirlwind that sparks joy and reflection.
The central-German composer of the High Baroque Johann Pachelbel, most known for his Canon in D typically played at weddings, has a rather large oeuvre of incredible choral works. Nun danket alle Gott (“Now thank we all our God”), is a rarely performed gem within this catalogue. Written for double chorus, it reflects Pachelbel’s admiration for the works of Schütz, and Schein (other composers writing in the same style roughly 30 years prior to Pachelbel). Like a tennis match, each voice part echoes praise back and forth in what we call antiphony. This specific compositional device is a trademark of Baroque era composers and invigorates the listener to go out into the world to sing praises and perform good works.
Andrej Makor, perhaps the least familiar composer for this specific service was born in 1987 in Slovenia. His choral music explores Eastern European idioms within orthodox soundscapes, while remaining rooted in Slovenian aural traditions. Spaseniya sodelal, (“Salvation is created”), is a serene setting that frames the original Kyvian chant from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the 17th century. Although Markor’s piece was born in the 21st century, its balance of old and new tropes compels us to sit and breathe in the immensity of God’s grace.
Moses Hogan stands as arguably the most important African American composer in modern history. His arrangements of spirituals redefined their role in liturgical settings across the globe. This specific work, My Soul’s Been Anchored in the Lord originally published in 1999, personifies the season of Pentecost as it asks the listener to entrench themselves in the trust that the Lord promises all people through acts of communal service and faith.
