District Facility Construction Updates Fall 2018-Winter 2019 Construction Begins at Cedar Manor Site Ahead of PSI Move

Beginning Fall of 2019, PSI will be located at 9400 Cedar Lake Rd. S., St. Louis Park.

The St. Louis Park Public Schools School Board approved a bid at its Monday, November 26 Business Meeting for $8.4 million in construction projects at the Cedar Manor school site. Construction projects will begin immediately in preparation for Park Spanish Immersion School’s move to the site in August of 2019. Some of the projects that will occur over the next nine months include: • New Secure Entry • Classroom Upgrades • Technology Upgrades • Buildingwide Renovations • Kitchen/Cafeteria Renovations • Playground Renovations • Parking Lot Reconfiguration

The District is proud to announce that 30% of the projects were awarded to companies that are either considered small businesses or owned by women and/ or minorities. The District is partnering with the City of St. Louis Park on the playground renovations.

Construction Begins on Future High School Offices

Construction will begin in January on the space formerly occupied by District Office staff on the northwest end of the High School building.

The space is being remodeled to accommodate the needs of High School office staff including the Principal’s Office, the Student Office, the Counseling Office and others.

The remodeling of the former District Office space will be completed in August of 2019, before the start of the 2019-20 school year.

The spaces currently occupied by those High School administrative offices will be remodeled into classroom space to accommodate the school’s growing enrollment. This construction project is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2020.

A Busy Spring and Summer 2019 for Construction Projects A large number of facility improvements are scheduled to begin in the Spring and Summer of 2019. The District intentionally scheduled a large number of projects during this timeframe in order to minimize interruptions to the school day and inconveniences to students, parents, staff and community members.

Aquila Elementary School will be closed during the summer of 2019 for several construction projects. The school’s classrooms will get a complete overhaul including upgrades to furniture, lighting, carpet, paint and technology. The school’s kitchen will also be renovated in order to serve more healthy and madefrom-scratch meals.

These same renovations will be made at Peter Hobart and Susan Lindgren Elementary Schools during the summer of 2020 (See the previous page for information regarding renovations at Cedar Manor/PSI).

In addition to the projects at Aquila and Cedar Manor/PSI, many projects will also begin during the Spring and Summer of 2019 at the Middle School and High School sites.

Projects at the Middle School include classroom renovations, the initial phases of the cafeteria addition and the initial phases of the media center addition.

Additionally, modifications to several entryways will be made to accommodate traffic flow during construction of the main school entrance, which begins summer of 2020.

Projects at the High School include major renovations to the athletic and physical education locker rooms, renovations to the tennis courts, and the initial phases of the weight room/fitness center addition.

The locker rooms and tennis court projects are scheduled to be completed

by August of 2019 in preparation for the fall sports season. The weight room/ fitness center addition is scheduled to be completed in December of 2019.

District Begins School Start-End Times Study

St. Louis Park Public Schools held the first meeting of the School Start-End Times Study Project Team on Monday, November 19, 2018, at Lenox Community Center.

This team of 27 individuals from all of St. Louis Park Public Schools’ stakeholder groups (students, parents, teachers, principals, administrators and transportation consultants), is charged with determining the optimal schedule to meet the overall health, academic and social/developmental needs of all K-12 students. This work will include recommendations for bus routes and pick-

up/drop-off times for all students and will consider the school day as well as beforeschool and after-school activities.

Project Team members will meet in a series of four meetings from November through March before sending one or more recommendations to the administration and School Board.

Stakeholders not on the Project Team will have two opportunities – in January and February – to engage in the process and provide input/feedback. More information about these public input opportunities will be announced soon.

St. Louis Park Students Actively Participate in Nov. 6 General Election High School Students Participate in Secretary of State’s “Students Vote” Program St. Louis Park High School Students participated in the Secretary of State’s “Students Vote” statewide mock election program this fall. The program engages students in the election and provides an outlet for student voices to be heard.

Grades 2-8 Participate in Kids Voting Program Students in grades 2-8 at all four elementary schools and the middle school, participated in Kids Voting on Nov. 6. A total of 2,259 ballots were cast in local, state, and national races. This is the fourth year that St. Louis Park Public Schools has participated in the Kids Voting program, in cooperation with the St. Louis Park League of Women Voters.

Kids Voting USA is a nonpartisan, grassroots-driven voter education program committed to creating lifelong voting habits in children, increasing family communication about citizenship, and encouraging greater adult voter turnout.

On a single day in late October, every high school student traveled through Room C350 at the high school during their social studies class to participate in a mock election for Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Senate, and House of Representatives.

High Schoolers Serve as Student Election Judges Minnesota Civic Youth piloted a new Student Election Judge Program this fall to encourage the participation of students in the election process. The City of St. Louis Park and St. Louis Park Public Schools partnered to recruit 16 students. Throughout St. Louis Park and in some precincts in Minneapolis, students actively served – some from 6 a.m.-10 p.m. These students were paid for their service and encouraged to continue active participation as election judges in the future. The work is directly aligned to career and college readiness as the students prepare for their futures.

2019-20 City-School Calendar Photo Contest Begins Jan. 7 St. Louis Park residents, and individuals employed at St. Louis Park businesses, are invited to submit photos to the 201920 City-School Calendar Photo Contest.

For the contest, 13 photos that best reflect the calendar theme “My Favorite Place in St. Louis Park” will be selected to appear in the calendar.

The next City-School Calendar will arrive in all resident mailboxes in August 2019. The calendar is also available online and can be downloaded and printed from home. The calendar is intended to keep residents up-todate on important events, meetings, holidays, and other events happening in the city and schools.

Contest runs January 7-May 30, 2019.

Echo Receives Several Awards

Eight High School Students Recognized

by National Merit Scholarship Program Eight St. Louis Park High School seniors have been recognized earlier this fall by the National Merit Scholarship Program as either a semifinalist or a commended scholar for 2019.

Echo, the student-run newspaper at St. Louis Park High School, has received a National Newspaper Pacemaker Award for the publication’s 2017-18 print editions. Student-journalists and Echo Advisor Lori Keekley received the award at the National High School Journalism Convention in Chicago, Nov. 1-4.

The National Newspaper Pacemaker is the highest award given out by the National Scholastic Press Association.

This is the fifth National Newspaper Pacemaker Award that Echo has received, and its first since 2015.

In addition to the Pacemaker Award, students placed in several on-site contests during the Chicago convention.

Echo won Best of Show in both the Newspaper Tabloid (16 or fewer pages) category and the Website Small School category.

Alumna Devin Raynor ‘18 won an Honorable Mention award in the NSPA’s Design of the Year Award. Current senior and Managing Editor Sam St. Clair won an Honorable Mention award in the on-site Write Off contest for her News Design.

High School Spanish Teacher Alba Nelly Korman Named NEA Learning Fellow St. Louis Park High School Spanish Teacher Alba Nelly Korman has been named a 2019 Global Learning Fellow by the NEA Foundation.

Each year, the NEA Foundation chooses one educator from each state to participate in this 12-month professional development program that includes a two-day workshop in Washington, DC, online coursework, webinars by leading experts, peer learning, and a nine-day international field study experience in South Africa next summer.

“I am honored to have been selected as a NEA Foundation Global Learning Fellow, and I am excited to have this opportunity to work with a group of amazing educators and education experts from around the country,” Korman said. “I am looking forward to developing the skills and experience to actively use and apply global learning education in my classroom and in my community, and share it with my students and other teachers around the world. I am ready to help my students become global citizens!”

Four seniors, including Yonit Krebs, Alexis Lee, Jack Ostrovsky, and Beck Rusley have all been named National Merit Semifinalists. They are among 283 students from Minnesota and approximately 16,000 students from across the country to be named semifinalists this year.

National Merit Semifinalists are selected based on scores from the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) and are now eligible to compete for scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be awarded in the spring of 2019.

Semifinalists will be notified in February if they have advanced to Finalist standing.

Then, beginning in March and continuing to mid-June, around 7,500 students will be notified they have been selected to receive a National Merit Scholarship award.

Four other St. Louis Park seniors – Cyrus Abrahamson, Maggie Christiansen, Cecelia Schmelzle, and William Staib – have all been named National Merit Commended Scholars for 2019. Commended Scholars typically score in the top 3% of the approximately 1.5 million high school students who take the PSAT each year.

A Glimpse of School Happenings – Fall 2018

All 5th grade students at our elementary schools spent two days in October at Camp Ihduhapi in Loretto. This field trip provided our students with community building experiences, environmental education, and team building and leadership skills.

High School students in Ms. Lugo’s Business Innovations class spent a day at Carlson Companies Headquarters, listening to and learning from travel industry leaders. The opportunity was provided by the High School’s Career and College Readiness Program.

St. Louis Park elementary students celebrated Upstander Day on October 24 in concurrence with National Bullying Prevention Month.

Students wore orange to show that they will be an “Upstander” by spreading kindness, acceptance, and inclusion of others.

Local author John Coy signed copies of his books for PSI students at the school’s annual Author Night.

On November 8-11, 44 eighth graders traveled to Branson, Missouri, and performed in two concerts. They performed at Silver Dollar City amusement park and were the pre-show for the award-winning show Haygoods.

The Susan Lindgren Girls on the Run (GOTR) club participated in the GOTR Twin Cities Fall 2018 5K on Saturday, Nov. 10 at the Mall of America.

This counted-thread embroidery, originally from Norway, was traditionally done in white on white but now often incorporates any color of thread or fabric. The pattern is stitched, then portions of the fabric are cut away and lacy stitching is worked over the open areas. We will do a small project to learn many of the basic stitches. Discover the art and technique of lampworking, a style of glassblowing where glass is melted and manipulated over a fixed torch.

Learn to operate the torch, safety and proper technique when utilizing an open flame.

Glassblowing: Wine Stopper & Straws We’ll guide you on your way to making a colorful marble or sculpted shape to weld to the top of a stopper shaped glass piece, we will then cut a groove into it to fit a silicone gasket that will seal your unfinished wine bottle. Next we will cut glass tubing down to size, flame polish the ends, you can then melt in color dots or any design that you can come up with to help save the planet with your own reusable glass straws. Hand Building Bowls for Empty Bowls Empty Bowls is an annual event hosted by STEP in St. Louis Park to support efforts to eliminate hunger. This class is an opportunity to learn a fun craft and support this event. You will learn about food insecurity in St. Louis Park from a STEP staff member and Angela Jacob will teach you how to create your bowl. You will get to make two bowls, one to be donated to STEP for the Empty Bowls event and one to have for yourself. All supplies are included in class fee. STEP is proud to announce the return of St. Louis Park’s largest hunger awareness event. The 18th annual Empty Bowls gathering is meant to educate the community about food insecurity. The event will be

(9001 Cedar Lake Rd, St. Louis Park). Attendees can attend lunch (11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.) or dinner (5-7:30 p.m.).

Local artists and community groups generously donate handmade bowls to be given to attendees to take home as a reminder of the need to fill empty bowls in our community.

Volunteers serve a simple meal of soup and bread, all donated by local businesses. There will be activities for children and a great lineup of entertainment provided by St. Louis Park musicians. This affirming event brings together our citizens, the city, faith communities and schools to fill the empty bowls of our community through STEP, whose mission is to strengthen our community by responding to the basic emergency needs of individuals and families in St. Louis Park.

This beginner-oriented class incorporates right-brained drawing exercises including contour and gesture. You will ease into the process of drawing in a fun, creative and effortless way. We also offer recreational and leisure activities such as bowling, movie night, bingo and dances to meet the diverse needs of the participants. This new series was created and sponsored by the Community Education Advisory Council (CEAC). We will facilitate a community discussion on different topics each fall, winter and spring. This winter we are partnering with STEP.

Food Insecurity -

A Hidden Reality in St. Louis Park Food insecurity is defined as a lack of access to enough food for an active and healthy life. One in ten Minnesotans experience food insecurity and 13.8% of children in Minnesota are food insecure.

This is a reality faced by many families living below the poverty line as well as those with above poverty incomes. As many people must spend higher portions of their income on housing, transportation, childcare, and healthcare, temporary or ongoing shortfalls cause people to cut expenses wherever they can, including food.

We will have a panel discussion with people who are on the front lines of this issue in St. Louis Park and Minnesota. Modern Monsters: Mary Shelley’s The Civil War/No Proper Names, Frankenstein at 200 Battles or Dates Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, first published in 1818, marked the creation of the modern monster. The novel spawned adaptations in theater, film, and television, becoming synonymous with tensions between ancient and modern, faith and science, and human and monster. One-to-one visits are offered with no fee to support all expectant families and families with children up to two years old.

Early Learning Services conducts screenings for St. Louis Park children to help identify children who may benefit from early childhood services before they enter school and connects them with the appropriate resources and programs.

• One-to-one visits with a caring, knowledgeable MN licensed parent educator.

SHORTY BEGINNER SWIM LESSONS: For the preschooler who is not afraid of the water. Students will be in the water with an instructor working on Red Cross Levels 1-2. Small class ratio helps children learn quickly. Skills include blowing bubbles, front & back float, kicking, submerging, and beginner stroke. Water is 42” deep so students must be comfortable holding on to the side of the pool for short periods of time. This class may be repeated several times.

Middle School Chess Club

New and returning students invited. Students are taught different chess concepts and coached to implement them. They’ll practice positions set by the coach to improve their understanding of the concept. How to register – The programs listed on these two pages are offered by the City of St. Louis Park.

To register, use the form in the city’s booklet (pictured at right), online at www.stlouispark.org/parks-rec or call 952.924.2540 for a registration form. You cannot register for the programs on these two pages using the registration form in this booklet. You must register at The Rec Center, 3700 Monterey Drive.

Recreation activities Little Tot Playtime

Ages 1 – 5 by start of session Stop by for open play time in The Rec Center Banquet Room. Little tots can bounce in the moon walks, ride the big wheelers, play dress up or build with blocks. This is an unsupervised activity; parent or guardian must accompany their child(ren). Admission is $2 per session at the door.

Ages 16+ Check out fun ways to keep moving this winter by sampling fitness classes we’ll be offering in the spring.

Westwood Hills Nature Center programs Be the Light Winter Solstice Walks All ages

We will use this shortest day of the year to help us remember that many in our community aren’t able to “see the light” because of struggles with mental illness or difficult situations.

Together we can be the light for those in our community and help them take their first “steps” out of darkness. Advance registration required.

St. Louis Park residents, and individuals employed at St. Louis Park businesses, are invited to submit photos to the 2019-20 City-School Calendar photo contest. For the contest, 13 photos that best reflect the calendar theme “My favorite place in St. Louis Park” will be selected to appear in the calendar.

The next city-school calendar will arrive in all residential mailboxes in August 2019. It is also available online and can be downloaded and printed from home. The calendar is intended to keep residents up-to-date on important events, meetings, holidays and other events happening in the city and schools.
