Climate Reality Conversation

More than 70% of Americans believe that climate change is happening but we rarely talk about it with others. Join us for an interactive dialogue about what is happening to our climate, what the future holds, and what we can do about it. We will share some climate realities and why they are important and discuss how we as individuals and a community are uniquely positioned to tackle this critical issue. You will leave with ideas for actions you can take to positively influence climate change. Instructors: Juli Rasmussen and Steve George L323W20 Thursday Feb. 27 7-8:30 p.m. Lenox 115 1 Session Free

Drawing and

PAINTING

Drawing Without Tears Using a Camera Lucida

Wish you could draw? We will use a simple child’s toy camera lucida (Crayola Sketch Wizard) in the way that many art historians believe the renaissance artists used lenses and curved mirrors to create some of their masterpieces. Working from photos, either on paper or viewed with a smart phone or tablet, the lucida projects a ghost image of the photo onto your paper. You then trace the features and complete the drawing. In class, we will discuss line, shading and blending techniques, composition and more. There is $20 materials fee, payable to the instructor at the first class, includes a Sketch Wizard. (If you already have one, bring it to class, and the fee will be waived.) Drawing materials needed will be discussed at our first class. Instructor: Judy Goebel L260W20 Wednesdays Feb. 12-Mar. 18 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Lenox 108 6 Sessions $35/$30*

Acrylic Pouring

In this fun class, our instructor will introduce you to the magical world of fluid acrylics & pouring medium! NO EXPERIENCE required to learn how to create the same beautiful abstract canvases you see on Pinterest. Instead of paint brushes we will use gravity to move the paint and try techniques such as “dirty pour,” “flip cup,” and “swipe”. It’s a great way to spark your creative energy. You will create two 8”x8” canvases and transport home in cardboard boxes. Instructor: Lisa Vitkus L378W20 Wednesday Jan. 29 7-8:30 p.m. Lenox Cafeteria 1 Session $49

Alcohol Ink Painting Workshop

Experiment with alcohol inks on Yupo paper. The non-absorbent nature of Yupo means it will not buckle, no matter how much water you put on it, and it makes colors more vibrant and brilliant than on standard papers as all the color sits on the surface. Alcohol inks are pigment-intense and vibrant, freeflowing and filled with an energy all their own. You will leave the workshop with knowledge of a new technique that you can then take home and expand your artist interest. All supplies included in class fee. Instructor: Lisa Vitkus L179W20 Tuesday Apr. 7 7-8:30 p.m. Lenox 115 1 Session $39

The Natural Way to Draw

Beginner and Intermediate levels! This class incorporates right-brained drawing exercises including contour and gesture. You will ease into the process of drawing in a fun, creative and effortless way. Draw from figures, nature, still-life and photographs. Mediums include pencil, charcoal and sketching crayons. Please purchase materials before the first class. No previous drawing experience is necessary for the beginner level; the intermediate level is for students who have taken the beginner level or have previous drawing experience. Please see online description for materials list. Instructor: Jeanne Aaron

The Power of Intention

This group intention experience is based on Lynne McTaggart’s book “The Power of Eight: Harness the Miraculous Energies of a Small Group to Heal Others, Your Life, and the World.” We will, as we feel comfortable, share what needs to be fixed in our lives: our health, our relationships, our jobs, anything. Then for ten minutes we will as a group focus on a specific intention to heal one person’s situation, helping both ourselves and the intended focus of the healing intention. It is not necessary to be familiar with the book, but you should be willing to share compassion and to maintain focus for about ten minutes. If you come prepared with the “who, where, when, what, why, and how” of your intention and an ability to speak about it–then we can help you. A Fidelity Investments survey found 43% of parents haven’t had detailed conversations about aging or longterm care with family members - and an 23% haven’t had any conversations at all. Making plans for the future could mean some big changes and that can be scary. The best approach is to take it slow. Growing Up: Parents and Daughters Connecting

A workshop for parents and daughters ages 9-12. Growing up can be exciting, exhilarating, confusing and scary – all at the same time! Join health educators from myHealth for Teens & Young Adults for a fun and informative workshop that will take some of the mystery out of puberty and the questions out of adolescence. Prepare to laugh, create, question, learn and grow – TOGETHER! Girls ages 9-12 and their parent, or other trusted adult, will engage in fun and thought-provoking activities that help them learn about: puberty, reproductive anatomy and development in female and male bodies. We will learn what is normal (and great!) about growing up, how to have the best parent-child communication possible, and how to maintain or strengthen family bonds. Please reach out to Gabby Fitzgerald, at gabbyf@myhealthmn.org , with any questions about growing up content and activities. M322W20 Saturday Feb. 22 9 a.m.-12 p.m. MS 152 & 154 1 Session $59

LEARNING The Power of Intention

This group intention experience is based on Lynne McTaggart’s book “The Power of Eight: Harness the Miraculous Energies of a Small Group to Heal Others, Your Life, and the World.” We will, as we feel comfortable, share what needs to be fixed in our lives: our health, our relationships, our jobs, anything. Then for ten minutes we will as a group focus on a specific intention to heal one person’s situation, helping both ourselves and the intended focus of the healing intention, but you should be willing to share compassion and to maintain focus for about ten minutes. If you come prepared with the “who, where, when, what, why, and how” of your intention and an ability to speak about it–then we can help you. Driver’s Education with Safeway Driving School Safeway Driving School has been graduating teen drivers in the Twin Cities area for 50 years. Safeway’s focus is creating safe, responsible teen drivers. Classroom and behind-the-wheel lessons emphasize defensive driving techniques tailored for the inexperienced teen driver while targeting to influence the invincible teen attitude. All Safeway’s instructors are licensed by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. Class Instruction prepares the student to take the Minnesota permit test and begin the responsibility of driving. The 30 hours of classroom is structured into 10 independent lessons. If a student misses a lesson, they can make up that exact lesson number at the next session or at one of Safeway’s other classroom locations.

District Facility Construction Updates Fall/Winter 2019 Schools Unveil Remodeled Facilities at Fall Parade of Schools The School District is currently in the middle of four years of construction that will conclude in 2021. When construction is completed, the facility improvements will benefit ALL learners from our youngest, to our seniors in high school, to our adults and seniors in community education classes. The District hosted a Parade of Schools open house event on October 26, 2019 to showcase the work that has been completed to date.

Aquila Elementary School

St. Louis Park High School

Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School (PSI) saw the biggest transformation after the District renovated the building formerly known as Cedar Manor School (constructed in 1957). Updated spaces include the school’s new Main Office, cafeteria, Media Center, and Makers Space. PSI’s classroooms were also redesigned and renovated for next century learning. These classrooms feature flexible and dynamic learning spaces, new technology, and spaces for small group and independent learning.

At Aquila Elementary School, the classrooms have been renovated for next century learning and the Media Center has been completely renovated to create new learning opportunities. The school’s kitchen also received important updates as the District continues to move in a direction that will allow the School Nutrition Department to provide our students with more healthy and nutritious meals. Air conditioning was also installed in the school’s gymnasium during the summer of 2018.

Construction at St. Louis Park High School is ongoing and will continue through 2021. Competed projects include the new Main Office, plus the Student Services and Health Services offices on the Northwest side of the building adjacent to West 33rd Street. Future open house events will showcase more projects at the High School including the new Fitness Center/Weight Room, Locker Rooms, Dining Commons, and Link and Learning Commons.

Play is so important in the healthy development of our learners! A new inclusive and accessible playground was installed at Susan Lindgren Elementary School featuring colorful play structures for all ages and a slide built into the natural hillside geography of the school.

Construction is nearly completed on the weight room and fitness center. When complete, the fitness space will provide all learners with access to a variety of equipment and activities to encourage the development of healthy lifelong fitness habits.

The new high school locker rooms feature a new layout, lockers, flooring, lighting, toilets, sinks, showers, and branding. There are also new and improved storage areas, team rooms, and coaches offices, as well as a new common athletic training room.

Scheduled for completion in the Spring of 2020, the Middle School Media Center addition will feature flexible learning areas, expanded options for individual and small-group study, digital learning, and large group meeting options for students, teachers, staff, and community.

Middle School and High School Health Services

Both the Middle School and High School Health Services offices received an update to their spaces with updated flooring, furniture, fixtures, and equipment. Both spaces are now ready to meet the needs of all learners to ensure all learners attain their highest level of achievement.
