Qi Gong

Interval Circuit

This self-healing program is designed to promote physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. Any level of health can benefit from these simple exercises which can be done standing, sitting or lying down. What can you expect in a Qi Gong practice? You begin in a standing position with your knees gently bent. As you gently move your arms, you inhale and exhale in coordination with the movement. The movement is repeated several times, so that you can close your eyes if you want and just feel. You imagine being surrounded by healing, positive, universal energy of love and end with a brief guided meditation. Instructor: Deborah Heltzer

Studies show that interval training boosts the body’s metabolism. Circuit training is an effective method of exercising the whole body in a short period of time. Combine the two and you have a dynamically efficient strength and conditioning workout. All levels and abilities welcome. Bring a water bottle and towel. Instructor: Cathy O’Donnell

I am F.I.N.E

Parenting adolescents is difficult. We often ask our young person, “How are you?” and get the typical response, “I am fine.” However, based on tone, body language or instinct, we suspect otherwise. Hormones, peer relationships and pressures, busy schedules and school can create a vulnerability for teens to develop mental health and/or substance use difficulties. Parents find themselves desperate for guidance and support to help their loved one. This dynamic presentation will help you begin to identify when your adolescent is not fine and ways to intervene. Research suggests that frequent use of entertainment technology by young people is actually changing the way the young brain develops and processes things such as impulse control and perception of harm. The unlimited access kids have to technology today allows them to experience an entire world at their fingertips. While the use of technology certainly has its benefits, there are also applications that put our kids at greater risk for developing problems with things such as drugs and alcohol or bullying. This fun, fast-paced and interactive presentation will provide an overview of how kids are using technology, the impact technology is having on social and emotional development and how to help kids use technology in a balanced and safe way. Research suggests that frequent use of entertainment technology by young people is actually changing the way the young brain develops and processes things such as impulse control and perception of harm. The unlimited access kids have to technology today allows them to experience an entire world at their fingertips. And while the use of technology certainly has its benefits, there are also applications that put our kids at greater risk for developing problems with things such as drugs and alcohol or bullying. This fun, fast-paced and interactive presentation will provide an overview of how kids are using technology, what they are using, the impact technology is having on social and emotional development and how to help kids use technology in a balanced and safe way.

Driver’s Education with Safeway Driving School Safeway Driving School has been graduating teen drivers in the Twin Cities area for 50 years. Safeway’s focus is creating safe, responsible teen drivers. Classroom and behind-the-wheel lessons emphasize defensive driving techniques tailored for the inexperienced teen driver while targeting to influence the invincible teen attitude. All Safeway’s instructors are licensed by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. Class Instruction prepares the student to take the Minnesota permit test and begin the responsibility of driving. The 30 hours of classroom is structured into 10 independent lessons. After class is completed, students who are 15 years old are eligible to take their permit test at any Minnesota exam center. The permit test is not provided during the class. Behind-the-wheel instruction includes six hours of driving in three, two-hour private lessons. All driving is done in a Safeway car on city streets, highways and freeways with a responsible, licensed Safeway instructor. Safeway recommends students take their first lesson 2-3 weeks after receiving their permit card and after 5 hours of practice driving. Scheduling is offered online for 24/7 convenience. Parent involvement is required to produce safe, responsible teen drivers. It is critical that parents practice regularly with their student drivers. The state requires that students have a minimum of 50 hours of practice (15 hours at night). Parent classes are offered monthly at Safeway’s nearby classrooms. Have questions about the curriculum or driving education? Contact Safeway at: safewaydrivingschool.com or 651-3519150.

Ganyo Appointed as Executive Director of Children First The Children First Executive Committee is pleased to announce that Margaret Ganyo will serve as Executive Director of Children First. For the past 16 years, Ganyo has served as Executive Director/CEO/ Director of Strategic Partnerships at United Way of Southeastern Idaho. “It is a pleasure to welcome Margaret as the new Executive Director of Children First. Her experience with effectively leading communities towards a common mission and her passion for youth development is unequivocal, and I am confident in her abilities to create a bright pathway for Children First and our St. Louis Park youth,” said Larissa Lekang, Executive Committee Chair, St. Louis Park, Children First. Ganyo has spent the past six years leading an effort to launch what has become a nationally-recognized cradle to career community and schools education partnership. She also spent five years leading a high-performing, equity-focused early learning partnership aimed at increasing school readiness. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Spanish from Central College in Pella, Iowa, and her Juris Doctor from Santa Clara University.

“I am thrilled to have been entrusted with the next chapter of such a special community initiative,” said Ganyo. “I can’t wait to begin connecting with partners, Champions, and the community, envisioning a bold future together.” Children First is a community-wide initiative with a mission to engage adults in the promotion of the 40 developmental assets. Ganyo will be charged with serving as the community catalyst, in partnership with founding partners, the City of St. Louis Park, Park Nicollet Foundation, and St. Louis Park Public Schools, to activate adults to build assets in St. Louis Park’s youth. “We were fortunate to have a number of high quality candidates for the position, which speaks to the reputation of Children First and the St. Louis Park community,” said City Manager Tom Harmening. St. Louis Park Public Schools Superintendent, Astein Osei, said, “I am excited about the experience and expertise Margaret brings to this role. I am looking forward to her leadership and the positive contribution she will make to Children First!”

Minnesota

Ganyo started her new position on February 10, 2020 and offices at the St. Louis Park Public Schools District Office. Ganyo replaces Karen Atkinson, who served as the first Executive Director of Children First from 1994 until 2019.
