The project in Gjirokastra focuses on revitalization of the town by introducing a model where the culture of making and craft, long-existing in the town, will be protected and the knowledge, that is in peril of dying out be safeguarded for the future. Gjirokastra built heritage is at risk due to the loss of skilled crafts people, whose expertise is needed to maintain and repair the Ottoman legacy and who were plentiful under the regime. We have observed that the town is also dying, offers little future to younger generations and needs a new lease of life. As a studio, we consider that cultural tourism alone will not offer the kind of viable, sustainable future for the town and its inhabitants that is needed.
