Summer runway operations at YVR As an international airport committed to excellence in safety, YVR is proactively building Runway End Safety Areas (RESAs) to meet international recommendations and exceed the anticipated Canadian standard. RESAs are specialized areas at the end of a runway that protect passengers and reduce the severity of damage to an aircraft in the unlikely event of an overrun or undershoot. Preparation work for construction on the South Runway is underway and is currently taking place during the day. In preparation for construction, Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) will be unavailable at the east end of the South Runway. The North Runway will be used for limited arrivals starting May 9, between 10pm and 7am. Nighttime construction of RESAs on the South Runway

begins on May 19 as part of the airport’s typical summer runway maintenance program. This construction will take place between the hours of 9pm and 7am and will continue seven nights a week until June 30. From July 1 to August 31, construction will take place five nights a week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday). The North Runway will be used for arrivals and departures during these closures and will also be used for arrivals on nonclosure dates during July and August. It is the goal of Vancouver Airport Authority to work efficiently, in order to complete the construction in the shortest time frame possible and with minimal impact on the community and its neighbors. For more information, visit YVR.ca/RESA or contact RESAinfo@yvr.ca.
