YVR’s future growth outlined in annual address to Vancouver’s business community

In the annual address to the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade in October 2022, Tamara Vrooman, president and CEO of Vancouver Airport Authority, highlighted Vancouver International Airport’s (YVR) approach to meeting heightened community, traveller and economic expectations amid changing travel and aviation realities.

Vrooman announced projections of increased passengers and provided significant updates on important growth priorities centred around land use, cargo, climate, and innovation, as well as exploring opportunities beyond the airport’s core operations.

“We are on track to welcome more than 17 million passengers this year,

following an increase of 168 per cent from January to August [2022] and the single biggest increase of travellers in our 90-year history,” said Vrooman.

“As we reflect on lessons

learned from the pandemic and look to the future, the importance of connection has clearly illustrated the responsibility we have to lead and grow with purpose to help build a community

New YVR Express security screening program

that is resilient, thriving and sustainable.”

In keeping with YVR’s forward-looking strategy, Vrooman spoke about several unique ways the airport thinks about growth and connection.

These include redesigning its land use plan and unlocking significant opportunities for new development through 2072. And the continued focus on its cargo business by exploring and investing in digital infrastructure to improve the movement of goods.

YVR is also leveraging its digital twin, which provides real-time information on airport operations, including modelling on optimizing operational efficiency. The tool can also monitor and map more efficient aircraft movements to reduce emissions, supporting YVR’s and the aviation industry’s climate goals.

Air Canada launches nonstop service to Bangkok

Vancouver International Airport has launched YVR Express, a free screening service program for U.S.bound travellers.

YVR Express allows passengers to streamline their experience at security by scheduling a specific time to enter the screening line. Passengers can book their security screening between 90 minutes and 72 hours ahead of their flight departure time.

After scheduling an appointment for their travel party, passengers will receive a QR code via a confirmation email. They can then follow signage to the YVR Express lane within 15 minutes of their reserved appointment before proceeding through the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) security screening.

The program is part of YVR’s broader innovation strategy to simplify the passenger experience through digitization. Through close

collaboration with airport partners to address operational challenges, US-bound passengers can move through security more efficiently via this express booking program.

Passengers are encouraged to book their appointment as early as possible during busy travel, as slots are limited.

Airlines have also been informing passengers about the service as part of their check-in process, contributing to increased usage as travel returns to pre-pandemic levels.

The new YVR Express service has proven successful, with more than 16,000 express bookings made by U.S.-bound travellers in the first six weeks of its operation.

Plans are in place to expand the service through Domestic and International security checkpoints in the coming months.

For more information on this service, visit yvr.ca/express.

A celebration was held at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) on December 1 to mark Air Canada’s inaugural flight AC65, which departed from YVR at 10:59pm, beginning a 15-hour, 55-minute journey to Bangkok, Thailand.

The seasonal service will operate four times a week until March 26, 2023, using Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

Travellers can choose from three cabins: lie-flat seats in Signature Class, Premium Economy and Economy Class.

Flight AC65, from Vancouver (YVR) to Bangkok, will operate on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

Flight AC66 will depart the Thai capital at 8:30am on Tuesday,

Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, arriving in Vancouver at 6:35am local time.

“We are thrilled that Air Canada continues to grow its transpacific hub at YVR with the introduction of their new route to Bangkok— the only direct service from North America to Thailand,” said Tamara Vrooman, president & CEO of Vancouver Airport Authority. “This new service will provide passengers with incredible tourism options and a broad range of business opportunities in the region. And here in British Columbia, this new route will generate $2.8 million in tourism spend and $1.5 million in GDP.”

YVR continues to prioritize Indigenous collaboration and allyship across its operations, as outlined in the 30-year

Friendship and Sustainability Agreement.

“At YVR, how we move forward will impact our region and country, so we are very mindful of the priorities that we are setting and how we work across industry, with our many partners, and with [the] government to build a globally connected community,”

said Vrooman. “We are proud of the entire YVR team for adapting amid challenging headwinds faced by the aviation and travel industries over the past two years, and we’re excited for what’s next as we look to the future of growth and connection in service of our community and the economy that supports it.”

First for a Canadian airport: YVR receives Level 4+ Airport Carbon Accreditation

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has received Level 4+ Airport Carbon Accreditation by Airports Council International (ACI), making it the first airport in Canada and only one of three in North America to achieve this status.

The Airport Carbon Accreditation provides a common framework and tool for active carbon management at airports with measurable results.

The Level 4+ accreditation recognized YVR’s role in setting a course for its carbon reduction while actively working with aviation partners to drive broader emissions reductions.

Work on YVR’s Roadmap to Net Zero Carbon is advancing, and the airport remains on track

to become net zero by 2030, making it one of the greenest in the world.

Four decarbonization pathways are being followed that outline actions necessary for the airport to reduce emissions from

its direct operations—called Scope 1 and 2 emissions. These pathways are green fleets, energy conservation and electrification, replacing fossil fuels with renewable alternatives, and strategically purchasing carbon

removals to close the gap.

YVR is also focusing on supporting the overall decarbonization of aviation in conjunction with the ongoing efforts of the federal government’s Aviation Climate Action Plan and is

New offerings at U.S. Departures

working with its partners to provide support in reducing their emissions.

This support includes providing ground power units for airlines to plug into electric power at the gate and shut off engines and using YVR’s digital twin technology to monitor aircraft movements and map more efficient routes on its airfield to reduce carbon emissions.

YVR’s leadership in carbon reduction was given further recognition by ACI through an Honourable Mention at the 2022 Environmental Achievement Awards for the airport’s Roadmap to Net Zero Carbon.

ACI has recognized YVR for its sustainability efforts with progressive accreditation levels since 2016.

Airbus reveals zero-emission engine powered by hydrogen

Airbus is developing a hydrogen-powered fuel cell engine as one of the potential solutions to equip its zeroemission aircraft that will enter service by 2035.

Airbus identified hydrogen as one of the most promising alternatives to power its zeroemission aircraft because it emits no carbon dioxide when generated from renewable energy— water being its most significant by-product.

There are two ways hydrogen can be used as a power source for aircraft propulsion: hydrogen combustion in a gas turbine and fuel cells to convert

hydrogen into electricity to power a propeller engine.

A hydrogen gas turbine can also couple with fuel cells instead of batteries in a hybridelectric architecture.

Hydrogen fuel cells increase their power output when stacked together, allowing scalability. In addition, an engine powered by hydrogen fuel cells produces zero NOx emissions or contrails, offering additional decarbonization benefits.

Airbus has been exploring the possibilities of fuel-cell propulsion systems for aviation for some time. In October 2020, Airbus created Aerostack, a joint

venture with ElringKlinger, a company with more than 20 years of experience as a fuel cell systems and component supplier.

In December 2020, Airbus presented its pod concept, which included six removable fuel cell propeller systems.

Airbus will start ground and flight testing this fuel cell engine architecture onboard its ZEROe demonstrator aircraft towards the middle of the decade.

Boeing forecasts strong demand for air cargo services through 2041, with traffic doubling and the world’s freighter fleet expanding by more than 60 per cent.

Boeing’s 2022 World Air Cargo Forecast (WACF), a biennial detailed analysis of evolving dynamics, projects that the world’s cargo fleet will require nearly 2,800 production and converted freighters for growth

and replacement through 2041.

This doubling of cargo traffic will require operators to switch to more capable, fuelefficient sustainable jets to meet demands. Furthermore, a third of aircraft deliveries will consist of new production freighters. At the same time, the remaining two-thirds will be freighter conversions, providing carriers with increased flexibility in existing and emerging markets.

“While the air cargo market is returning to a more normal pace after historic demand in the last two years, structural

factors including express network growth, evolving supply chain strategies and new cargomarket entrants are driving sustained freighter demand,” said Darren Hulst, Boeing vice president of commercial marketing. “In the global transportation network, air freighters will continue to be a critical enabler to move high-value goods, in increased volume across expanding markets.”

The 2022 WACF also provides these insights about the cargo market through 2041:

The Asia-Pacific region will

take delivery of nearly 40 per cent of all freighters, including new and converted freighters.

While dedicated freighters are 8 per cent of the total commercial airplane fleet, they continue to carry more than half of all air cargo, with passenger airplanes carrying the remainder as belly cargo.

Over the next two decades, the global freighter fleet will grow by more than 1,300 airplanes to more than 3,600 jets

The complete 2022 World Air Cargo Forecast is available at www.boeing.com/wacf.

British Airways brought the magic of Hollywood to Heathrow with a special Star Trek takeover at the airline’s Terminal 5 home to celebrate the launch of Paramount+ on board the airline’s international flights.

Unsuspecting customers and colleagues were surprised to

see the Starfleet cadre make its way through the airport to board U.S.S. Enterprise flight 1701 to Starbase 1. Stunned customers about to board their flights took photos, and assisted lieutenants in seeking directions to their boarding gate.

The unusual scenes at the airport were to celebrate the launch of a dedicated Paramount+ channel on the Highlife entertainment platform, allowing British Airways’ customers to watch popular series from the comfort of their seats when travelling on any long-haul flight in every cabin.

The authentic Starfleet costumes from Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek:

Strange New Worlds were carefully flown directly from a set, with costume wearers made up of the airline’s Star Trek-loving colleagues.

Bringing characters together from different universes, nearly 1,000 years apart, was a first for the Star Trek franchise, with genuine props, including Tribbles, Federation passports and an original Tricorder.

This partnership with Paramount forms part of British Airways’ continued commitment to enhancing the premium experience for customers with a flair of originality.

A new era for Volvo Cars: Fully electric Volvo EX90

Volvo has revealed its new full-electric SUV, the EX90, a seven-seater family car with cutting-edge technology in core computing, connectivity and electrification to optimize safety, efficiency and aesthetics.

Starting with the EX90, Volvo plans to reveal one new fully electric car each year and to sell only fully electric vehicles by 2030. This plan is one of the most ambitious electrification blueprints in the automotive industry and crucial to the car manufacturer’s ambition to be a climate-neutral company by 2040.

The Volvo EX90 is to be built in the USA starting in 2023

and China at a later date. Volvo aims for both production facilities to be climate-neutral.

“The Volvo EX90 is a statement for where we are and where we are going,” said Jim Rowan, Volvo’s chief executive. “It’s fully electric with a range of up to 300 miles on a single charge, designed to further raise our safety standards, the first Volvo car to be truly defined by its software and part of a wider ecosystem, connecting to your home and your other devices.

The Volvo EX90 is the start of something new for Volvo Cars in many ways.”

The EX90 has an invisible shield of safety enabled by the

latest sensing technology, inside and outside. State-of-the-art sensors like cameras, radars and lidar connect to the car’s highperformance core computers. An Nvidia Drive computer platform for autonomous vehicle and driver functionality runs Volvo Cars’ in-house software to create a real-time, 360-degree view of the world.

In-vehicle sensors and cameras powered by Volvo’s in-house-developed algorithms gauge the driver’s eye gaze concentration. The technology allows the Volvo EX90 to understand when the driver is distracted, sleepy or otherwise inattentive, beyond what has

Flagship Porsche Centre opens in Richmond

Porsche Centre Richmond’s new flagship location in the Richmond Auto Mall (13171 Smallwood Place) is a 75,000-square-foot state-of-theart dealership made possible by a partnership between OpenRoad Auto Group (OpenRoad) and Dilawri Group of Companies (Dilawri).

First announced in 2016, the project kicked off in 2019 with the launching of a satellite vehicle showroom and Porsche Design Boutique, which served the region’s customers while work on the permanent building began.

Now, six years later, in 2022, Porsche Centre Richmond has finally opened its doors.

As one of Canada’s largest Porsche dealerships, Porsche Centre Richmond’s three levels include a spacious new and preused vehicle showroom, custom guest amenities, a delivery area, and 15 cutting-edge service bays.

The purpose-built building accommodates Porsche’s full E-Performance range of vehicles, including electric drive and plug-in hybrid models such as the Porsche Taycan, Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, and Cayenne E-Hybrid

The dealership becomes BC’s first Porsche Centre to follow the brand’s new corporate architecture concept, Destination Porsche.

An emphasis on brand experience and inspiration, flexibility, and the use of digital media for individualized communication, characterizes the Destination Porsche concept.

Porsche Centre Richmond is the second Porsche dealership for either automotive group. OpenRoad currently has Porsche Centre Langley in the Langley Auto Collection in its portfolio, while Dilawri operates Porsche Centre Vancouver.

been hitherto possible in a Volvo car.

If the unthinkable happens, and the driver falls asleep or becomes ill while driving, the Volvo EX90 is designed to stop safely and call for help.

The Volvo EX90 contains approximately 15 per cent of

recycled steel and 25 per cent of recycled aluminum, as well as more than 105 pounds of recycled plastics and bio-based materials, which corresponds to approximately 15 per cent of the total plastic used in the car—the highest level of any Volvo car to date.

2022 Lulu Awards recognize urban design excellence

Four pre-eminent design and development projects have earned accolades as winners of the City of Richmond’s 2022 Lulu Awards for Urban Design.

The 2022 Lulu Awards go to the following four projects:

In the residential and mixed-use, mid-rise urban design category, the award goes to The Roderick, developed by Platform Properties Ltd. and designed by ZGF Architects Inc. and Perry and Associates. This mixed-use building, located in Richmond’s Steveston Village, is a sensitive response to the heritage context of Steveston Village. The building frontage along Third Avenue, Chatham Street and Moncton Street is animated with pedestrian-oriented commercial uses.

In the residential and mixeduse category, high-rise urban design, the award goes to 2 River Green, developed by ASPAC Developments Ltd. and designed by James K. M. Cheng Architects Inc., IBI Group Inc. and PFS Studio. This mixed-use building in the Oval Village at 6622 & 6688 Pearson Way includes two 13-storey and one low-rise with 284 residential units.

In the Public and Institutional Open Space urban design category, the award goes to Steveston Nikkei Memorial, designed by Hapa Collaborative. The Memorial, located at 4011 Moncton Street in Steveston, commemorates the 75th anniversary of the evacuation, relocation, and internment of 2,500 Japanese Canadians from Steveston during World War II. The design creates a tranquil and contemplative space in a high public context, in proximity to the bustle of Steveston Park, No.1 Road and Moncton Street

In Landscape Innovation urban design category, the award goes to Harrington Court, developed by Western Maple Lane Holdings Ltd. and designed by Fougere Architecture and ITO & Associates Inc. The townhouse development with 15 homes,

located in Blundell at 6028 Maple Road, recognized the line of mature trees of No. 2 Road as a dominant site feature and was preserved to overcome the challenge of grade difference.

Honourable mentions went to the following three projects: Paramount, residential and mixed-use, high-rise urban design

This residential and mixeduse high-rise was developed by Keltic Canada Development and designed by GBL Architects and PWL Partnership Landscape Architects Inc. Located in the City Centre Brighouse Village at 6340 No. 3 Road.

River Green Lot 9, residential and mixed-use, high-rise urban design

ASPAC Developments Ltd., IBI Group and PFS Studio developed this Residential and mixed-use high-rise. Located in the Oval Village at 6611 Pearson Way.

Minato Village, commercial urban design

The commercial development was developed by G&B Estates and West Coast Projects and designed by Urban Design Group Architects and ETA Landscape Architecture.

Located in Steveston at 3900 Steveston Highway.

The Lulu Awards, held every four years by the City of Richmond, recognize vision and excellence in local urban design, that is, architecture, streetscapes and built landscapes that combine to create the look of Richmond’s built environment. Various project types are eligible, including residential, commercial, industrial, mixed-use, open spaces, public utilities and recreational projects.

This year’s five-person jury panel comprised three independent judges representing architecture, urban planning and landscape architecture, as well as two City of Richmond judges from the Planning and Development division
