YVR Star of the Month: Hazel Leier

Hazel Leier, a 24-year veteran with Lufthansa, is this month’s YVR Star for her exceptional customer care.

It has been just a few months since the Vancouver Airport Authority launched its YVR Stars program and since then the star nominations have been pouring in. YVR Stars is a program that officially recognizes those employees and volunteers who go above and beyond for YVR’s visitors.

Each month, one YVR Star will be featured in SkyTalk to celebrate the contribution they have made to customer care at YVR. This month’s YVR Star is Hazel Leier, a Lufthansa employee. Leier has spent 24 years with Lufthansa, 22 of which have been right here at YVR. Known as the “hero of the baggage hall,”

she is a shining example of the importance of putting passengers’ needs first. For years, Leier has made it her mission to reunite passengers with orphaned baggage—stopping at nothing to get suitcases, duffle bags and backpacks to its rightful owners, no matter what airline they may have flown.

Community

Leier doesn’t do this simply because it’s in her job description, but because she cares deeply about ensuring passenger satisfaction. She works hard every day and feels a tremendous sense of accomplishment when she sees a passenger’s baggage frustrations melt away. Hazel Leier, for all your efforts, Lufthansa and YVR

thank you! Have you witnessed great customer care in action at YVR? Then nominate a YVR Star. Fill in a form at any Customer Care counter in the terminal or email yvrstars@yvr.ca. Submissions can also be made online via Twitter at @ yvrairport using the hashtag #YVRStars.

National Police Week, which began in Canada in 1970, is an annual event dedicated to increasing community awareness and recognition of police services. This year, National Police Week in Canada will run from May 11 to May 15, with RCMP detachments across the country marking several important milestones that reinforce the important role police play in the safety and security of Canadians, both at home and abroad.

Locally, the Richmond RCMP will be hosting several special events within the community each day, including May 11 at YVR. Members of the local RCMP Detachment, E Division National Security and its partners from YVR, Transit Police, US Customs and Border Protection, Canada Border Services and Tourism Richmond will be on site at YVR to share important information about travel safety

and security, the organization services each provides, collaborative efforts in support of public safety and to connect with members of the community. Highlights of the event will include a police motorcycle and other equipment for viewing, a Transit Police Dog and photo opportunities with the RCMP Safety Bear. For more information, please tweet at @RichmondRCMP or @YVRairport.

Vancouver Airport Authority is a communitybased, not-for-profit organization that operates Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

Multi-agency exercise tests airport’s emergency plan

More than 30 agencies and 600 people participated in this year’s multi-agency training exercise at YVR, a key part of the airport’s comprehensive emergency plan to ensure that Airport Authority staff and its other partner agencies are as prepared as possible in the event of an airport emergency.

Last month, YVR hosted a live training exercise simulating an aircraft collision to practice emergency response plans with business partners and the airport community. Airport operations proceeded as normal during the simulation. “Safety is our top priority at YVR,” said Steve Hankinson, vice president, operations and information technology, Vancouver Airport Authority. “Training exercises, like this one today [April 29], are a vital part of YVR’s emergency management. We work with our business partners and the airport community to practice our plans together and remain prepared in the unlikely event of an incident.” The exercise scenario involved a commercial aircraft landing on the runway and crashing into a private aircraft crossing the same runway. A simulation of aircraft wreckage set on fire was attended to by Airport Authority emergency responders. A family and friends zone was also set up to simulate the care and dissemination of information needed during an emergency. More than 600 volunteers played injured victims, passengers and family members, giving everyone involved a realistic experience. The scenario was selected to involve as many responders as possible to test YVR’s Emergency

Management Plan and those of its business partners. Planning for the exercise began in July 2014 and included the participation of 30 agencies including: BC Ambulance Service; BC Coroners Services; City of Richmond; London Air Services; Provincial Health Services Authority; Richmond Fire Rescue; Royal Canadian Mounted Police; Salvation Army; Transport Canada; Transportation Safety Board of Canada; Vancouver Coastal Health; and WestJet. YVR’s Emergency Management Plan centres around three principles—prevent, prepare and practice and deals with all emergency situations including: aircraft incidents, natural disasters, medical emergencies, security threats or biological hazards. Emergency exercises are a key part of YVR’s Emergency Management Plan and are performed on a regular basis. Emergency exercises can include live scenario training, such as this exercise; table-top exercises; and emergency simulation drills. YVR’s Emergency Management Plan is assessed and refined on an ongoing basis to incorporate knowledge gained through real-life and simulated emergency situations and the latest developments in airport safety and emergency management.

BorderXpress, a made-at-YVR technology Automated Passport Control kiosks San Francisco International Airport (SFO) recently unveiled 40 new BorderXpress Automated Passport Control (APC) kiosks,

developed by Innovative Travel Solutions—a department in the Vancouver Airport Authority— to expedite the customs entry

process for international arriving passengers. The kiosks allow eligible international travellers to submit their customs declaration form and biographic information electronically, thereby reducing the time they spend with a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer. Individuals can complete the process in approximately 90 seconds. “We are committed to improving the arrival experience for our international travellers, and these new Automated Passport Control kiosks provide an easy way to speed through the customs process,” said airport director John L. Martin. “International traffic continues to grow at SFO, and this automation will help ensure that our customs facility can efficiently accommodate the increased activity.” “U.S. Customs and Border Protection remains committed to making the international arrivals process as traveller-friendly as possible by offering new and innovative technology to streamline the process,” said Brian J. Humphrey, CBP Director of Field Operations in San Francisco. “APC kiosks have been proven

to reduce wait times for the evergrowing number of international visitors without compromising our important border protection mission.” The system is currently available to U.S. and Canadian passport holders, Lawful Permanent Residents, and international visitors under a visa waiver program. Travellers follow touch-screen instructions, available in 13 languages, to scan their passport and answer customs declaration questions. Successful users are then issued a receipt confirming their information, which is shown to a CBP officer for final processing before proceeding to international baggage claim. “We’re proud to partner with

SFO to improve the international travel experience for passengers,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “By automating part of the border clearance process, BorderXpress helps U.S., CBP officers process up to four times more passengers than traditional clearance. With this increased efficiency, international travellers arriving at SFO will experience shorter wait times, less congestion and faster customs processing times.” In 2014, international traffic at SFO grew 5.5 per cent, and more than 4.4-million passengers arrived through the customs facility. SFO recently welcomed a new international airline,

Turkish Airlines, with nonstop service from Istanbul. In addition, several airlines, including British Airways and Emirates, have increased the number of available seats to SFO, through use of Airbus A380 aircraft. Innovative Travel Solutions is the leader in Automated Passport Control Services. As a department in the Vancouver Airport Authority, Innovative Travel Solutions works to create a simpler travel experience through its border security products. These products include the first-of-its-kind Automated Passport Control kiosks and the Automated Border Clearance service, giving international airports the ability to improve its customs processes.

Preparation work for construction on the South Runway is underway and is currently taking place during the day. In preparation for construction, Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) will be unavailable at the east end of the South Runway. The North Runway will be used for limited arrivals starting May 9, between 10pm and 7am. Nighttime construction of RESAs on the South Runway

begins on May 19 as part of the airport’s typical summer runway maintenance program. This construction will take place between the hours of 9pm and 7am and will continue seven nights a week until June 30. From July 1 to August 31, construction will take place five nights a week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday). The North Runway will be used for arrivals and departures during these closures and will also be used for arrivals on nonclosure dates during July and August. It is the goal of Vancouver Airport Authority to work efficiently, in order to complete the construction in the shortest time frame possible and with minimal impact on the community and its neighbors. Fun in the sun should include protection for the skin There is a common myth that if a person tans well they are protected from the sun’s harmful rays. While it is true that fairhaired, blue-eyed people are the most prone to burning and therefore more susceptible to the sun’s rays, even so-called healthy tans are actually the body’s way of trying to protect itself from the sun. Years of sun worshipping, be it outside or in a tanning salon, will eventually show up later on in life as wrinkles, poor skin elasticity and possibly skin cancer. The sun, however, is also very important to health. It provides vitamin D, which is needed for bones, and it can even lift our spirits. There is a form of depression called seasonal affective disorder (SAD) that can happen when there’s more darkness than daylight. People usually experience SAD during the winter months and feel much better when summer arrives. As with most good things, moderation and good sense are the keys. The goal is to have fun outside but to stay safe at the same time. Here are some basic rules to help protect the skin: Cover up whenever possible. For example, a longer cotton skirt might feel cooler on a hot day than a pair of shorts and will help guard against the sun. Wear a hat. Hats keep the sun’s rays off the scalp, face and back of the neck, prime areas for skin cancer. A good hat will also shelter and protect your eyes from the sun’s powerful rays. Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going outside, even if the sun doesn’t seem particularly strong, or it is cloudy— damaging ultraviolet rays can still penetrate clouds. Always apply sunscreen that has a minimum SPF (sun protection factor) of 15 and protects from both UVA and UVB light. Be sure to follow the directions closely and reapply the sunscreen on a regular basis throughout the day, especially after swimming or sweating, even if the sunblock product advertises that it is sweat- or water-resistant. Ask your pharmacist or doctor for their product recommendations and advice on proper application. Lips, ears, nose and toes can burn just as easily as any

other exposed part of the exposed body, so also apply a sunblock product to these areas. Avoid the sun when it’s at its peak. It’s strongest between 11am and 4pm. If applying other products to the skin, double check with a pharmacist about which product to use first. For example, insect repellents should be applied at least 15 minutes after applying sunscreen. If you use prescription medications, such as certain skin creams or blood pressure medications, check to see if they can make you more sensitive to the sun.

If, despite being careful sunburn occurs, treat it as you would any other kind of burn: • Apply cool, wet compresses for 24 to 48 hours • Don’t apply skin creams within the first two days • Drink a lot of water to keep from feeling dehydrated • Use over-the-counter painkillers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen if there is some pain or discomfort due to the burn. Very severe burns, the kind that produce blisters, are often treated in clinics with dressings. Do not break burn blisters your-

self, as this can lead to a skin infection if not properly treated. It is estimated that up to 80 per cent of a person’s total exposure to the sun happens before 18 years of age. Because of this, it is recommended that children be taught healthy sun habits. Serious sunburn in childhood can increase future cancer risk by as much as 50 per cent. The contents of this column are for informational purposes only. Always seek the advice of a physician or other qualified health provider with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition.

Vancouver welcomed Air France’s new seasonal service between Paris and Vancouver on March 29, 2015 and the airline has already demonstrated that it wants to be here for the long-haul by participating in this month’s 42-kilometre Vancouver marathon. In addition to being the official airline at the Vancouver Marathon, held on Sunday May 3, Air France also fielded a team for the relay race, a new event

added for the 2015 edition. Representatives of Air France-KLM, Delta Air Lines and the Vancouver Airport Authority formed the four-member team that ran the marathon. “Just weeks after inaugurating our Vancouver-Paris service, we are proud to have been involved within the Vancouver community as the official airline of the 2015 Vancouver Marathon, one of the city’s biggest events,” said Jean-Noël

Ault, vice-president and general manager of AIR France-KLM Canada. “We are also proud to have literally teamed up with our partners to run this spectacular race course.” The airline further contributed to the event by setting up an Air France Waterfront Lounge for visitors on the Vancouver Convention Centre terrace, taking part in the Street Festival, where runners or passersby were able to stop in for a massage at the airline’s booth, and running a contest titled Bon Voyage, with a pair of tickets to Europe as the grand prize.

Youth take-off with training from aviation industry A joint venture between the British Columbia Aviation Council (BCAC) and the Air Cadet League of Canada British Columbia Provincial Committee (BCPC) has resulted in a work experience program accredited by the BC Ministry of Education. This program will see youth completing 40 hours towards their High School Graduation Transition (HSGT) program in the aerospace and aviation industry. The Air Cadet Work Experience Program, launched in 2011 is complementary to the Air Cadet advanced training syllabus as it provides the opportunity for Cadets to work in either an aircraft maintenance and overhaul facility or an airport operations environment. The HSGT programs which enables high school students to acquire real work experience has been successful in placing students in various facilities around the province including; the Regional Glider Schools Maintenance Hangar at CFB Comox, Conair, Kelowna Flightcraft and Vancouver International Airport along with Abbotsford, Boundary Bay, Castlegar, Langley, Nanaimo, Pitt Meadows, Prince George and Kamloops Regional Airports. Once an industry partner is identified, the students must

apply for the work position, get it approved by their school counselor. Students are then expected to attend an orientation tour and briefing provided by the host company and will work under the direct supervision of a mentor. The HSGT program has been well received by all stakeholders particularly, the parents and educators and is proving to be of increasing interest to our aerospace industry partners. Several of whom have hired the students after completing their work experience. While the Work Experience Program is not an Air Cadetrun program, it is facilitated by

the Air Cadet League of Canada British Columbia Provincial Committee (BCPC) and with an April 30, 2015 signing of a Letter of Affiliation between the BCAC and the BCPC, this successful program will now be expanded to open work opportunities to non-cadet students. If your company is interested in supporting the development of skilled aviation workers please contact Mr. Norm Lovitt at the Air Cadet League of Canada British Columbia Provincial Committee (604732-9119 BCPC@aircadetleague.bc.ca).

Summer sightings in Sedona The American Southwest is rarely mentioned as an ideal vacation destination during the summer months, and Arizona has an especially poor reputation with its high temperatures. However, there is a place that stays much cooler than the rest of the state—Sedona. Mountains surround Sedona, Arizona, protecting it from much

of the heat that makes other areas of the state much warmer. With national parks, festivals and events throughout the summer months, Sedona is an excellent choice for a getaway spot. Here are some special events to see during the summer months. The Sedona Hummingbird Festival is a sight to behold. Held this year from July 31 to

August 2 when the population of hummingbirds is the highest and most diverse, these three days are always filled to the brim with free exhibits and special garden tours or breakfast with these colorful little birds. Book tickets in advance at hummingbirdsociety. org. The artistic soul of Sedona thrives vibrantly in galler-

special exhibits and events—a great way to experience three of Sedona’s biggest art locations— Tlaquepaque, Hillside Sedona and Uptown Sedona. The showcase is free and includes opening receptions. Ride the trolley for free between venues. There are many state and national parks located close to Arizona, but the one with the biggest draw during the summer months is Slide Rock State Park. Named one of the top 10 state parks in 2014, Slide Rock features a smooth, slippery natural waterslide that ends in a swimming hole—a fun and cooling way to spend a day with the family. Nearby Red Rock State Park provides activities for children that include Ranger programs, guided nature walks and special guest speakers or presentations. One area not to be missed is the Crescent Moon Ranch Picnic Area at Red Rock Crossing. There is fishing, swimming and beautiful scenery to photograph.

There are plenty of places where hours can be spent learning about the history of the Southwest. Sedona has a Heritage Museum with exhibits featuring art from across the region and educational exhibits about everyday life in the town from the nineteenth century until present day. Sedona is also the location of two Indian ruin sites—the Palatki and Honanki Heritage sites. Take time to see Montezuma Castle and Well, a National Monument about 30 minutes from Sedona. Sedona is located less than two hours away from one of the seven natural wonders of the world and there are many day tours offered to the Grand Canyon that begin in Sedona. Visitors can also drive themselves the short way up to the national park to enjoy the truly stunning views of the Grand Canyon and some of the walks around the rim. Richmond News

City of Richmond launches new emergency notification system Richmond residents and businesses are being encouraged to sign up to receive critical voice or text messages through Richmond BC Alert, the city’s new emergency notification system at RichmondBCAlert.ca. Richmond residents and businesses may register up to six phone numbers, two email addresses, one SMS text and one fax number for each local address. When an emergency occurs, voice or text messages will be sent to all registered contacts in the impacted area. Evacuation notices, emergency instructions, direction to emergency reception centres or shelters, and information on family reunification will be among the messages that could be sent out during an emergency situation. “From fires to hazardous material incidents, severe weather or an earthquake, our community needs to be prepared for any emergency,” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “Richmond BC Alert is an important new tool that will help us keep residents informed during times of natural or man-made crisis. But it only works if people sign up to ensure they’ll receive notifications directly and quickly should an emergency arise.” While the City has access to some

resident and business contact information through publicly available sources such as the White Pages, this only represents a small portion of personal phones, cell phones, emails and other contacts relied upon by local residents and businesses to stay connected. It is therefore critical that residents and businesses sign up for Richmond BC Alert. The website began accepting registrations on May 1. Residents can also register by calling 604-233-3333 from 8:15am to 5pm, weekdays. Richmond residents and businesses that follow Twitter are also encouraged to follow the City’s dedicated emergency Twitter feed @RichmondBCAlert.

Answer: Sukhoi Superjet 100

The Sukhoi Superjet 100 is a fly-by-wire twin-engine regional jet. The airliner was designed and spearheaded by Sukhoi, a division of the Russian civil aerospace company, in co-operation with several foreign partners. Designed to compete internationally with its An-158, Embraer and Bombardier counterparts, the Superjet 100 claims substantially lower operating costs, at a lower purchase price of $35 million.
