YVR’s path to recovery continues as 10-million-passenger mark reached

As the global aviation community rebuilds from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, YVR reached an important milestone on August 5, 2022, when it reached a 10-million-passenger mark year-to-date.

“This is an important moment in our recovery,” said Tamara Vrooman, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “Our ability to welcome over 10 million pas

sengers so far this year is due to the hard work of our staff, airlines, government, partners, and the airport community at large. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the 20,000 people who work at our airport for their dedication to serving our passengers over the past several months. Their efforts have been an essential element of our recovery. However, con siderable work still needs to be done to ensure the stability of

the overall aviation sector. But after only seeing approximately two-million passengers at this same point last year, it is very encouraging that we can con tinue to build back while avoid ing many security and major operational delays impacting passengers worldwide.”

Over the past few months, airlines have made important decisions to continue invest ing in service restoration and expansion at YVR, including

Air Canada’s service launch to Austin, Texas and announcing its new services to Bangkok, Thailand and Miami, Florida, this winter.

From now on, the opera tional impact of the pandemic on aviation is akin to the virus itself—it is still very unpredict able. YVR will continue to work closely with all industry stakeholders as passenger numbers continue to increase,

and travellers are encouraged to remain current on government travel policy requirements.

More information to help travellers prepare for their next trip through YVR, including travel measures and top tips, is available at yvr.ca/travelplan ning.

Government of Canada’s removal of COVID-19 travel measures welcomed by Canadian airports

On September 27, the Government of Canada announced the removal of all COVID-19 entry restrictions and testing, quarantine, and isolation requirements for any one entering Canada, effective October 1, 2022.

The decision to remove border measures was a result of several factors: modelling that indicates that Canada has primarily passed the peak of the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 fuelled wave; Canada’s high vaccination rates; lower hospi

talization and death rates; the availability and use of vaccine boosters (including new biva lent formulation); rapid tests and treatments for COVID-19.

Effective October 1, 2022, all travellers, regardless of citi zenship, no longer have to:

• submit public health informa tion through the ArriveCAN app or website;

• provide proof of vaccination;

• undergo pre- or on-arrival testing;

YVR says ‘Bula’ to Fiji Airways

YVR welcomed a particular flight this summer when Fiji Airways flew to Vancouver a few months earlier than scheduled.

The flight included a few special guests who visited to assess the brand-new, twiceweekly Nadi International Airport to YVR direct service before its official launch on November 25, 2022.

On arrival, the Fijian visitors received a tradi tional Musqueam Welcome Ceremony at YVR.

Additionally, a dance perfor mance celebrated Fijian culture.

Located in the South Pacific, Fiji boasts white sand

beaches on more than 300 islands in its archipelago. It is famed for coral reefs, clear lagoons and rugged landscapes and is a favourite tropical weather destination.

In addition to the new direct service to YVR, Fiji Airways also operates regularly sched uled service to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Singapore, Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane, and Auckland.

The Vancouver Airport Authority looks forward to say ing “Bula” [Welcome] to many more travellers arriving at YVR via Fiji Airways.

New technology from YVR streamlines international arrivals process for passengers across Canada

Passengers arriving at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) are now moving through Canada’s customs and border process up to 50 per cent faster per traveller, thanks to the new Primary Inspection Kiosk (PIK) technology developed by the airport’s innovation team in part nership with the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA).

In the past, travellers had to complete their full customs decla ration on paper or at a kiosk upon arrival. Using the latest PIK tech nology, travellers can complete their declaration 72 hours before arrival using the ArriveCAN mobile app or website.

Travellers who complete their declaration before arrival at the air port do not need to answer all the

questions on the kiosk; they simply verify their identity and move on to the next step in the arrivals process.

The PIK technology is acces sible and inclusive, allowing passengers unfamiliar with the machines upon arrival at the air port to have their friends or family help them complete the declara tion before travelling.

After successfully implement

ing this innovative technology at YVR, the airport is now going beyond to other airports across Canada, including implementing its usage at Montréal-Trudeau International Airport, Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson Airport and, soon, Halifax Stanfield International Airport and Québec City’s Jean Lesage International Airport.

New UpMeals SmartVending machines at YVR provide 24-hour food accessibility

No matter what time one works at or travels through YVR, fresh and healthy food is available—thanks to the airport’s new UpMeals SmartVending machines, which provide up to 30 ready-to-eat salads, bowls, juices, healthy snacks, wraps, and more, at any time of day.

The addition of these machines at the airport is part of YVR’s journey to transform its food and beverage program, offering more fresh, local, and authentic options to better reflect the incredible culinary scene of the community.

The machines also feature a meal exclusive to the airport, the YVR Signature Bowl, which

includes B.C. smoked salmon, tomatoes, avocado, cucumber, nori, and pickled ginger on a bed of steamed sushi rice with UpMeals’ miso tamari dressing.

UpMeals SmartVending machines are located at these post-security locations through out YVR:

• Three in Domestic departures

• One in U.S. departures

• One in International departures

Meal replenishment takes place daily, allowing customers to experience new menu items based on popularity and the sea sonality of ingredients.

The meals are made within a Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP)-

YVR takes the stage at Cascadia Corridor Conference

In September, YVR president and CEO Tamara Vrooman joined leaders from government and industry for essential conversa tions about the priorities of the Cascadia region at the 6th Annual Cascadia Innovation Corridor Conference (CIC).

The CIC initiative brings together business, academic, and government leaders from both sides of the border for conferences and virtual forums to explore new regional strategies, maximize shared competitive advantages,

and elevate their global economic position.

At the conference, YVR announced its alignment with Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) and Portland International Airport (PDX) in their commitments to decarbonize the aviation sector and become the greenest airports in North America.

A joint Cascadia Airports statement acknowledged that the carbon emissions most directly controlled by airports are those

COVID-19 travel measures

• carry out COVID-19-related quarantine or isolation;

• monitor and report if they develop signs or symptoms of COVID-19 upon arriving in Canada.

• undergo health checks for travel on air and rail; or

• wear masks on planes and trains While travellers no longer have to submit their quarantine and vaccination information through ArriveCAN, they can continue using its optional Advance Declaration feature for their customs and immigration

from their facilities and opera tions, which allows them to be highly aggressive in reducing these carbon sources.

The group welcomes other Cascadia Corridor airports, avia tion stakeholders, and business and government leaders to join them in pursuit of decarbonization goals.

declaration before airport arrival.

This Advance Declaration feature is available to travellers arriving at Vancouver, Toronto or Montréal-Trudeau international airports. It will expand to Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Billy Bishop Toronto City, Ottawa, Québec City, and Halifax inter national airports in the coming months.

Although the masking require ment is no longer in force, the rec ommendation is that all travellers wear high-quality and well-fitted masks during their journeys.

A set of guidelines will remain to protect passengers and crew and align with the approach used in the United States.

Individuals should not travel if they have symptoms of COVID19. If travellers become sick while travelling and are still ill when they arrive in Canada, they should inform a flight attendant, cruise staff, or a border services officer upon arrival. There may be a referral to a quarantine officer who will decide whether the trav eller needs further medical assess ment, as COVID-19 remains one

of many infectious diseases listed in the Quarantine Act.

“After more than two years operating under a very complex series of changing regulations, [this] announcement is very welcome news for the travelling public, our community, and work ers across the aviation sector,” said Tamara Vrooman, president & CEO at Vancouver Airport Authority. “The removal of COVID-19 travel measures will improve passengers’ overall travel experience, assist our frontline employees, and allow more peo

ple to reconnect with loved ones and tourism experiences across the province and country.”

Leveraging its long history of innovation during the pandemic, YVR accelerated digital applica tions to improve the traveller experience, including implement ing a new digital twin platform to monitor operations and deploy resources and support in real time.

Travellers are encouraged to review the Government of Canada’s travel advice at travel. gc.ca/travelling/advisories for more information on safe travel.

Summit Customs Brokers donates to the Cops for Cancer cause

Cops for Cancer is an annual event where law enforcement and emer gency services personnel cycle across Canada, raising money for childhood cancer research and support services at the Canadian Cancer Society.

This year, along with four other Cops for Cancer tours, Tour de Coast riders cycled more than 800 kilome tres across the varied terrains of the BC Coast and Greater Vancouver Area from September 21-29.

On Day 8, stopovers in New Westminster and Richmond included a special visit to Sea Island, where the riders were presented with a donation cheque for $25,000 from Summit Customs Brokers.

YVR and Iskwew Air strengthen connectivity with knowledge-sharing MOU

On September 26, Iskwew (pronounced ISS-KWAY-YO) Air and Vancouver International Airport (YVR) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that strengthened the working relationship between the airline and the airport.

The MOU between Iskwew Air and YVR is based on col laboration to enhance connectiv ity across BC communities. The two organizations will share best practices and knowledge in marketing and communications, operational innovations, and sustainability.

The journey to a more sustainable industry ecosystem will begin with joint efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and advance both organizations’ climate and sustainability goals, such as YVR’s Net Zero by 2030 objective.

“This historic agreement is about so much more than an agreement between an airline and

an airport; this is a demonstration of what is possible for a collective future,” said Teara Fraser, founder of Iskwew Air. “We look forward to continuing to connect people with each other and the land, alongside our friends at YVR. We know together, we can transform the aviation industry into one that is based on reciprocity, relation ships and sustainability. This is the future taking flight.”

The MOU also signals a strengthened partnership that acknowledges the power of unique perspectives, account ability, and a shared vision to support the development of Indigenous businesses and a sustainable Indigenous tourism economy that supports the prov ince’s economic recovery.

“As we have learned in working with Musqueam and Indigenous partners, reconcilia tion includes pursuing work that supports and creates opportunity for Indigenous business and

tourism,” said Tamara Vrooman, president and CEO of Vancouver Airport Authority. “Together with Iskwew Air, we will continue to maintain and grow vital air services to communities across BC while generating economic value for Indigenous people and businesses in these areas. We are honoured to partner with Iskwew Air and look forward to combining our efforts and impact to advance tourism and travel, as well as sharing knowledge that will contribute to our shared success.”

Iskwew operates from the airport’s South Terminal, with daily scheduled service between Vancouver and Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island.

Airline founder Teara Fraser is a Métis bridge builder, the first to start a 100 per cent Indigenous, woman-owned air line in Canada.

On Sept. 7, celebrating its 85th anniversary, Air Canada donated an original Lockheed L-10A Electra airplane to Winnipeg’s Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada to remain there on public display.

The iconic aircraft, with registration CF-TCC, was one of three purchased by Air Canada’s forerunner, Trans-Canada Air Lines (TCA), in 1937 and, until recently, one of only two Lockheed L10-A Electra aircraft still flying worldwide.

Named after a bright star in the Pleiades star cluster, the 10A Electra, a twin-engine, all-metal monoplane, was the pride of the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation in the 1930s.

An L-10A aircraft type operated TCA’s inaugural flight on September 1, 1937, a 50-minute trip from Vancouver to Seattle carrying mail and two passengers.

In that same month, TCA bought three additional

Lockheed L-10A aircraft, brand new, from the Lockheed fac tory for $73,000 each. Dubbed the “Three Sisters,” these aircraft carried the registra tions CF-TCA, CF-TCB, and CF-TCC.

The first aircraft, CF-TCA, is now at the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa.

CF-TCC last flew in 2018 and was one of two remaining Lockheed L-10A Electra aircraft still flying worldwide.

In 1975, a retired Air Canada employee recognized the faded registration marks of CF-TCC on an L-10A while attending an air show in Texas.

Air Canada kept track of the plane until 1983, when the airline purchased the aircraft, restored it, and flew it during its 50th-anniversary celebrations in 1986, culminating in a feature display in the Air Canada pavil ion during Vancouver’s Expo 86.

Since 1986, the aircraft has remained in flying condition.

Over the years, volunteers and support from the broader avia tion community, including Air Canada Maintenance and Flight Operations, have dedicated thousands of hours of personal time and other contributions to keep CF-TCC flying for future generations.

On September 21, 2007, Air Canada recreated TCA’s first flight from Vancouver to Seattle, marking the airline’s 70th anniversary.

In 2017, to mark the carrier’s 80th anniversary, the Lockheed 10A took to the skies for a crossCanada tour, making stops in 12 cities, including Vancouver.

On Sept. 7, 2022, CF-TCC made its final journey to the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada.

Air New Zealand is extend ing the expiry date on all credits to give customers more time to get back out and explore the world.

All customers possessing a credit on Sept. 30, 2022, have up to January 31, 2024, to book a new flight and until Dec. 31, 2024, to take that flight.

According to the airline, this will be good news for around

500,000 customers currently holding a credit with the airline.

There is no need for custom ers to call the airline’s contact centre, as Air New Zealand will email those customers who hold credits to let them know about the extension.

Customers who booked through a third party should contact them for more infor mation.

WestJet has introduced a new uniform collection for frontline team members. The uniforms, conceptualized by international designer, Juli Grbac, are unique to Canada and were created with safety and inclusivity at the forefront.

While developing WestJet’s new uniform, frontline WestJetters across all airline departments were consulted throughout the development phases to refine the designs and

create a product suited to those who would wear it.

In 2017, WestJet was the first Canadian airline to update its uniform guidelines to be unchained from gender norms.

The new uniforms, The Lakes and Rocky Mountain col lections, further that approach as they are genderless, providing the opportunity for WestJetters to select the most authentic and comfortable uniform.

Redesigned name tags also fea

ture a newly created space for pro nouns to promote greater inclusiv ity for everyone in WestJet’s world. At the same time, an infusion of the airline’s iconic teal colour high lights its 26-year history.

Along with the new uni forms, WestJet recently updated its tattoo policy to ensure front line staff have the freedom to showcase visible tattoos and celebrate individuality while wearing their uniform and repre senting the airline.

Boeing and its joint venture partner Wisk Aero have released a strategy for transitioning to a future where automated and uncrewed aircraft can safely carry passengers and cargo in urban and suburban areas.

The concept of operations lays out the technology, regula tory and social recommendations needed to deploy Urban Air Mobility (UAM) in the U.S. and integrate it into the national air space system.

The bedrock principles for urban air mobility include the concept that flights should be safe and affordable for everyone. Additionally, the aircraft would be automated to reduce the load on air traffic controllers and pilots, fly day or night under visual or instrument flight rules, and be supported by automated onboard and ground-based systems.

Boeing and Wisk say that evolutionary and pragmatic methods are necessary to make the vision of UAM a reality, including creating new infra structure such as ‘vertiports’— locations where UAM aircraft can take off and land, load and unload passengers, and receive services.

Additionally, while the air craft will be automated, Boeing and Wisk recommend the cre ation of fleet operations centers where multi-vehicle supervisors will monitor flights, implement air traffic control instructions to maintain aircraft separation, and ensure the safe operation of the flight.

In August 2022, Wisk Aero launched a new hub in Montreal dedicated to the ongoing devel opment of its sixth-generation aircraft, which Wisk will reveal later this year.

Aviation enthusiasts can own a piece of an A380 through a special Airbus auction

From October 13-15, 2022, Airbus will provide more than 500 Airbus A380 parts to avia tion enthusiasts at an auction to benefit the Airbus Foundation and the AIRitage association.

Auction partner TARMAC Aerosave selected the parts for auction following the decon struction of an Airbus A380, last flown by Emirates.

Lamps, the bar, stairs, hand rails, trolleys, seats, paddles, and even the cockpit rescue rope: more than 500 items, mainly from the cabin of this emblem atic aircraft, will be offered at the

auction to be held in Toulouse, France, and on the Internet.

Airbus A380 with the serial designation MSN13 entered service in 2008. It was meticulously decon structed in 2021 at the end of its life cycle by TARMAC Aerosave, the world leader in the sustainable management of aircraft end of life, from maintenance to recycling.

Since an industrial part can sometimes resemble a work of art: design, materials, and complexity often make them elements with unique characteris tics. As such, Airbus has decided to entrust certain A380 parts,

such as blades, to artists special izing in street art.

Most of the proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Airbus Foundation to help fund its humanitarian initiatives. Proceeds will also go to the AIRitage asso ciation, which works to protect aviation heritage.

Through the sum of its parts, the A380, considered one of the pioneers of eco-friendly commercial aircraft because of its lower fuel consumption and reduced noise levels, will live on even after it disappears from the skies.

A report by Accenture, a global technology company, finds that two-thirds of inter national travellers and import/ export traders surveyed support borders, immigration, and cus toms agencies deploying exist ing and emerging technology solutions to improve operations in the movement of people and goods.

The findings, detailed in the report Future borders 2030: From vision to reality, compiled data from 2022 surveys of travellers and traders involved in international importing and exporting across nine countries (Canada, the U.S., Australia, Finland, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and the United Kingdom) and draws upon a recent multi-country sur vey of border agency employees.

The report found that maintaining the status quo is not an option for border agen cies. Fifty-seven per cent of international travellers claimed to select their travel or layover destination based on whether they think their experience with border security will be seamless and easy. Additionally, 28 per cent have changed travel or lay over destinations because they

anticipated a problematic border experience.

Importers and exporters acted similarly, with 17 per cent indicating they have stopped contracts due to a poor experi ence with customs processes in certain countries.

The report also found that a third of the survey participants plan to travel more internation ally than before the pandemic.

Global trade is also grow ing, driven by the boom in e-commerce, currently projected to grow from $4.21 trillion in 2020 to $17.53 trillion by 2030. However, 85 per cent of import ers expect increased volatility over the next three years com pared to the previous three.

The report highlights three key technology trends:

• Frictionless by design: Experiences at borders becoming more frictionless and focused on satisfying the needs and desires of their users for safer, faster and more responsive journeys.

• Trust to truth: Growing com pilation and usage of data for assessments before and during border and customs interactions.

• Virtual frontiers: The emer

gence and acceleration of the metaverse and its impact on borders for training staff, facilitating inspections and

processing travellers and trade. “We need to leverage tech nology to create a more friction less experience for travellers

and the movement of goods,” said Prasanna Ellanti, who leads Accenture’s border services work. “This includes focusing on

City of Richmond and Richmond Multicultural Community Services collaborate on antiracism project

The City of Richmond and Richmond Multicultural Community Services (RMCS) are working to encourage diver sity and promote multicultural ism through an anti-racism arts project to launch this fall.

The project has received funding through a $92,000 grant from the Department of Canadian Heritage Community Support, Multiculturalism and Anti-Racism Initiatives (CSMARI) program.

The Aspire | Build | Celebrate (ABC) project will bring together diverse groups of youth and seniors in Richmond to engage in discussions on multiculturalism, diversity and racism. Participants will then collaborate with an artist team on a legacy project that reflects and promotes intercultural understanding and expression of multiple facets of Richmond’s diversity.

The project’s unveiling will take place in 2023.

“Racism and other discrimi natory behaviours have no place in the City of Richmond, and we continue to find ways to promote diversity and inclusion,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “This unique approach and partner ship with RMCS will encourage multi-generational residents to share their cultures, traditions and unique perspectives to support action against racism, promote learning and build a stronger community.”

The CSMARI program supports the mandate of the Department of Canadian Heritage to build on Canada’s strength as a diverse and inclu sive society and support com munities in confronting racism and discrimination, promoting intercultural and interfaith under standing and fostering equitable opportunities to participate fully in Canadian society.

“The City of Richmond’s anti-racism project provides essential opportunities to build an understanding of Richmond’s diverse communities, reduce barriers to participation in community life, and increase capacity to address racism and discrimination,” said Wilson Miao, Member of Parliament –Richmond Centre. “Our govern ment is committed to investing in initiatives that bring together diverse and multi-generational community members to engage in dialogue on issues of multi culturalism, diversity, racism and intersectionality.”

For RMCS, this partnership project is yet another opportu nity to welcome newcomers, support their transition to life in the City, and encourage harmony in diversity.

“Art is a unique way to build bridges, increase understand ing of others, and facilitate community connections,” said Parm Grewal, executive direc tor of RMCS. “This project, in collaboration with the City of Richmond, will continue to foster intercultural harmony and express the strength of the diver sity in our community.”

Other community partners include Richmond’s City Centre Community Association and the Minoru Seniors Society.

This unique project will fur ther support actions in the City’s 2019–2029 Cultural Harmony Plan relating to developing and implementing programs and ser vices that facilitate intercultural exchange and understanding between Richmond’s diverse communities.

The plan, the first of its kind in Canada, encourages partner ships with local agencies and senior levels of government to develop and implement pro grams that foster cultural har mony.
