Switzerland’s border with France in the Jura Mountains, is today the center of Swiss watchmaking. This small town was also the birthplace of the world-famous modernist architect, writer, urban planner, designer, and artist Charles-Edouard Jeanneret—also known as Le Corbusier.

Girard-Perregaux was inspired by his multifaceted fellow townsman’s most significant works in creating three different limited-production watches in his honor: La Chaux-de-Fonds, Paris, and Marseille.

In his youth, Le Corbusier was trained as a carver and sculptor. It is for this reason that this watch’s face is made from mother-of-pearl.

Yeni Maserati’nin motorları Ferrari tarafından Maranello’da üretilecek. Yeni nesil motorlar hem daha güçlü hem de daha çevreci olacak şekilde özel olarak tasarlanmış.

The new Maserati’s engines will be manufactured by Ferrari in Maranello. The latest-generation engines were specially designed to be stronger and environmentally friendlier.

2015’e dek yılda 50 bin adet araç üretecek olan firma bu iddialı sayıya ulaşmak için iki kıtada, iki yeni üretim merkezi kuruyor. Üç yeni otomobil modeliyle iki farklı segmente girecek olan firmanın başlangıç modeli ise fotoğrafına baktığınız ve Ocak 2013’te Detroit’de görücüye çıkacak yeni Maserati Quattroporte.

Yeni Maserati, önceki modelden daha geniş bir lüks sedan otomobil. Önceki modelin bazı özellikleri öndeki hava girişi, yandaki üçlü menfezler ve üçgen şekilli C sütunları korunmuş.

Ancak aracın daha geniş ve kaslı görünmesi sağlanmış.

Maserati is starting a series of operations that will lead to deepreaching changes in the automobile world. Aiming to produce fifty thousand vehicles annually until 2015, the company is establishing two new manufacturing plants on two continents in order to reach this lofty number.

The company is set to enter two different segments with three new car models. The first of these is the Maserati Quattroporte (pictured), which will be released in Detroit in January 2013. The new Maserati is a luxury sedan that is roomier than its predecessor, of which some qualities—including the front air intake, the triple apertures on the sides, and the triangle-shaped C-columns—were preserved.

The car was made to look wider and more muscular, an effect in which the doors and triple side windows play an indubitable role. From now on, Maserati will be progressing with a brand-new corporate approach toward becoming a stronger global player. How successful will it be?

MAESTRO İSTANBUL’DAN GEÇTİ MASTER CONDUCTOR VISITS ISTANBUL Hem Türkiye ve Hollanda arasındaki diplomatik ilişkilerin 400. yılı hem de İstanbul Kültür Sanat Vakfı’nın 40. yıl özel etkinlikleri kapsamında Hollandalı Kraliyet Concertgebouw Orkestrası, 10 Kasım’da çok özel bir konser verdi. Orkestra şefliğini üstlenen dünyaca ünlü Maestro Lorin Maazel ile keyifli bir söyleşi gerçekleştirdik.

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of the Netherlands gave an exclusive concert for the four-hundredth anniversary of diplomatic relations between Turkey and the Netherlands and the fortieth anniversary of the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts. We had a pleasant chat with the world-renowned conductor Lorin Maazel.

Deutsches Oper Berlin’in ve Viyana Devlet Operası’nın şefliğini yapan Mazel; New York Filarmoni Orkestrası, NBC Filarmoni Orkestrası gibi önde gelen orkestraların da misafir şefliğini yaptı.

A LIFE FILLED WITH SUCCESS In 1960, the conductor Lorin Maazel went down in history as the first American to conduct “Bayreuth” by the German composer Richard Wagner. Maazel served as the chief conductor of Deutsches Oper Berlin and the Vienna State Opera. He has also appeared as a guest conductor of such leading orchestras as the New York Philharmonic and NBC Philharmonic.

Her turist gibi ben de İstanbul ve çevresinin güzelliklerine hayranlık duyuyorum. Türkiye, bende hep bir canlılık ve kararlılık hissi uyandırmıştır. Burada müzik yapmak çok özel bir olay ve bunu tekrar yaşayacağım için kendimi ayrıcalıklı hissediyorum.

Hollanda’nın müzikal geleneğinin en öne çıkan örnekleri olarak kimleri verebiliriz?

Hollanda’nın müzik geleneği sıkı bir şekilde performansa bağlı. Hollandalı müzisyenler, orkestra şefleri ve orkestralar ve özellikle de efsanevi Concertgebouw Orkestrası klasik Avrupa müzik geleneğini sürdürmede ve beslemede çok önemli rol oynadılar. Birçok besteci de buna destek sağladı ve sağlamaya devam ediyor. Van Anrooy’un Piet Hein Rhapsody’sini buna örnek gösterebiliriz.

Dünya üzerinde en sevdiğiniz konser salonları hangileri?

Favoriniz olan salonla ilgili özel anlarınız, hatıralarınız var mı?

Concertgebouw Salonu, Dijon Konser Salonu, Boston’daki Symphony Salonu, Viyana’daki Musikverein, Montrö’deki Stravinsky Salonu, Japonya’daki Sapporo Konser Salonu …

Verdiğim yüzlerce konser arasında tek bir örneği favori olarak gösteremeyeceğim kadar çok anım var.

You have been to Turkey on many occasions. Could you summarize in a few words what you enjoyed on your previous visits and what you are looking forward to on this visit?

Like every tourist, I am in awe of the beauties of Istanbul and its surroundings. Turkey has always given me the impression of vitality and purpose. Making music there is very special and I feel privileged to have this experience once again.

Whom would you suggest as outstanding examples of its musical tradition?

The Netherlands’ music tradition is firmly anchored in performance. Dutch musicians, conductors, and orchestras—especially the legendary Concertgebouw Orchestra—have played a major role in sustaining and nurturing the European classic music tradition. Its many composers have also made their contributions; and they continue to do so as exemplified by the “Piet Hein Rhapsody” by Van Anrooy.

What are your favorite concert halls around the world?

Do you have any special moments or memories about the one that is your favorite?

The Concertgebouw Hall, the Dijon Concert Hall, Symphony Hall in Boston, Musikverein in Vienna, Stravinsky Hall in Montreux, the Sapporo Concert Hall in Japan… I have too many memories of the hundreds of concerts I’ve given and heard in these halls to single out one as a favorite.

In 2008, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra was ranked by Gramophone as the best symphony orchestra in the world.

What do you think was the key reason for this decision?

How does it feel to conduct the best orchestra in the world?

I am not in favor of rankings. There are many great orchestras. Each has its valid place in the world of music.

When you were starting out as a conductor were there any favorite conductors whom you admired at that time?

Victor de Sabata, Bruno Walter, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Arturo Toscanini.

Are there any works that you have not yet conducted but would like to include in future programs?

If I find a major work I have not had the honor of performing, I shall surely schedule it. The new challenge of each new day to improve upon the last performance.

When you go on a busy tour, do you ever have the opportunity to visit sights and landmarks in that city? If not, do you wish you had more opportunity to do so?

When I tour, I do not sightsee. On vacation, I catch up on what I missed.

It is well known that you are very supportive of young musicians of all kinds; in where and what form are you most actively involved with this process?

I am chiefly involved in mentoring and nurturing young musicians, conductors, and singers at the Castleton Festival (casteltonfestival.com), which celebrates its fifth anniversary in July/August 2013. The results of this ongoing interaction with the stars of tomorrow have been most gratifying.

With history being readable and interpretable in so many different ways, why did you choose jewelry?

What provoked you to write this book?

It was firstly my academic background that directed me toward this—as both an architect and an art historian, I saw what a sophisticated design jewelry could be, what it can express, and what sorts of meanings could be loaded onto it. I started working on this subject years ago. I’ve been gathering many things on this subject for many long years. I write articles and present conferences around the world, and I have always seen this: jewelry is what best reflects the political and social situation and all the conditions, possibilities, and tastes of the era it was made. If you line up jewelry side by side, period by period, and if you also examine such matters as what was emphasized in each period, what stones were used, and who used the piece or who gave it as a gift, what emerges is a full panorama of history—a very colorful panorama, at that.

So, you have examined several different periods. Can we discuss of a general taste in Ottoman jewelry?

Yes. Firstly, this is completely an imperial synthesis. The Ottoman Empire collected the knowledge and manner found in the borders to which expanded. Ottoman jewelry was created by the most important masters, and

Bu kitap tezhiplerine, minyatürlere, kumaşlara ve çinilere de yansır. Dönemin zevki en güzel şekilde mücevherde görülür. Bu dönemde görülen çok ince bir işçiliktir. 17. yüzyıl ilerledikçe aynı işçiliğin olanakları sağlanamaz artık ve örneğin kalıpla çakma diye basit bir yöntem uygulanır. 18. yüzyıla gelindiğinde ise durum daha farklı bir hal alır. the motifs it used flowed down from every stream of the Ottoman taste in art, which can be summarized as follows: colorful precious stones set in flower-shaped gold housings, rubies, emeralds, turquoises, and diamonds— these are put in order according to the motifs that suited Ottoman tastes. The Ottoman jeweler did not like to interfere too much in the nature of the stones; he would leave them in a more natural condition instead. Though strict symmetry as in European jewelry was not sought out, a unified motif appears upon inspecting the whole.

Ottoman history is also reflected. The 16th century, for example—the brightest period for the Ottomans—also encompassed the 17th century. The tastes of this era were very colorful, and this is reflected in bookbinding, miniatures, fabrics, and chinaware as well. The taste of the era is best seen in jewelry. The craftsmanship of this era was very fine. As the 17th century progressed, the same means of craftsmanship could no longer be provided. For example, a simpler technique called “striking-upon-mold” was practiced. The situation changed even more by the 18th century as the empire suffered political

Yine başa dönersek ve genel bir karakter belirlemek istersek çok renkli, çok çeşitli olmak ve yaşamın her alanına yayılmak Osmanlı mücevherinin genel özelliğidir diyebiliriz.

Padişahlar kendi zevkleriyle bu sanata nasıl bir katkı yapmışlar?

Evliya Çelebi, Yavuz Sultan Selim’in ve Kanuni Sultan Süleyman’ın şehzadelikleri döneminde kuyumcu olarak eğitim gördüklerini söylüyor. Gerçekten de Kanuni padişah olduktan sonra kuyumcuları çok korumuş, destek olmuş ve onlara birtakım ayrıcalıklar vermiştir. Yani bu sanat dalına ilgisi olduğunu görüyoruz. Kuyumculuk, sarayın desteği olmadan sürdürülemeyecek bir sanat dalıdır. Sarayın genel beğenisi onu yönlendirmiştir. Diğer sanatlarda olduğu gibi… Saray nakkaşhanesinde dönemin uygulanacak motifleri üretilirmiş. Bu motiflerin en incelikli, en sofistike biçimde kuyum işlerine, mücevherlere yansıdığını görebiliyoruz.

O yüzden diyorum ki sanat dallarının en incelmiş biçimlerinin yansıdığı yerdir mücevherler.

difficulties. Overelaborate diamonds and gems were used during that period as if to try to cover this up. Later, in the 19th century, one observes increased European influence in every area, including jewelry. Going back to the beginning, were we to determine a general character for Ottoman jewelry, we could say that its notable qualities were its abundance of color, its diversity, and its reach into every part of life.

How did the sultans contribute to this art through their own tastes?

Evliya Çelebi noted that Selim the Grim, and Suleiman the Magnificent were trained as jewelers during their princehoods. Indeed, after Suleiman became sultan, he guarded, supported, and granted a number of privileges to jewelers— evidently he had an interest in this art. Jewelry is an art that cannot be practiced without the support of the palace. The palace’s general sense of taste guided it and other arts. The motifs used in that era were produced in the palace’s painting hall and we see these motifs reflected in jewelry with utmost sophistication. Therefore, in my opinion, jewelry is the place where the arts are reflected at their finest forms.

Osmanlı mücevherlerde kullandığı değerli taşlara çeşitli anlamlar da yüklemiş.

Cevhernameler denen kitaplar var, yüzyıllar boyunca yazılmış, sarayda da okunmuş ve şimdi Topkapı Sarayı Müzesi Kütüphanesi’nde. Kitaplarda her taşın nelere iyi geldiği yazıyor. Bunlara ne kadar inanmalı ayrı bir konu ama bugün de biz bazı taşlardan birtakım şifalar ummuyor muyuz? Ben bunu şöyle görüyorum, binlerce yıl toprağın altında kalarak oluşmuş, dünyanın bir cevheri bu taşlar ve siz bunu yalnızca bir ömür boyu takabilirsiniz. Çok kısa bir süre yani. Sahip olmak da bir sorumluluktur. Bunun bilinci de olması gerekir diye düşünüyorum. Bunlara birtakım anlamlar yüklersek belki de sahiden bunlardan birtakım enerjiler bize gelebilir. Örneğin diyor ki, “elmas takan herkes tarafından sevilir, hükümdarlar onu hoş görür”, “yakut kara sevdaya iyi gelir”, “yakutu dil altınıza koyarsanız ferahlık verir” veya “zümrüt kötülüklerden korur ve yılanın gözünü kamaştırır; yaklaştırmaz” diyor. “Firuze yenilmezlik sağlar” diyor. Bunun bir yansımasını ben mücevher tarihini araştırırken gördüm. Tahtlarda firuze bu sebeple çok kullanılıyor.

Gündelik hayattaki eşyalarda da değerli taşların kullanılması bu sebepten mi?

Bu hem taşlara duyulan sevgi hem de saray yaşantısındaki debdebeyi ve padişaha verilen önemi yansıtıyor. Eşyaların büyük çoğunluğu padişaha ait ve oradan da bütün yaşama yayılıyor. Yani zenginlik ve varlık göstergesidir takılar. Bir beşik mücevher olabiliyor yahut padişahın sarayda, yaşadığı mekânlardaki kubbeden sarkan askılar da bir iktidar simgesi olarak kendilerini gösteriyor. Ama en çok bir Avrupa tacının buradaki karşılığı olarak sorguç takmak zorunlu. Bunların da çok görkemli olması gerekiyor. Padişah arz odasında bir elçiyi kabul ettiği zaman tahtta oturuyorken başında görkemli bir sorguç var kavuğuna iliştirilmiş ama bu yetmiyor. The Ottomans assigned various meanings to the precious stones they used in jewelry, too…

There were books called “jewel books.” These were written over the centuries, read in the palaces, and are now at the Topkapı Palace Museum Library. Written in the books is what every stone is good for—whether one ought to believe them is another matter, but don’t we hope for treatment from some stones today, too? This is how I see it: These are earthly stones that formed underground over thousands of years. You can only wear them for a lifetime—a very short time. Possessing them is a responsibility, and this should entail some awareness. By assigning a number of meanings, perhaps we could extract certain kinds of energies from these. It was written that, “The person who wears diamonds is loved by all and rulers view them kindly;” “Rubies are good for passionate love;” “A ruby placed under the tongue provides relief;” and “The emerald protects one from evils and dazzles the eye of the snake, warding it off.” “Turquoise provides to one the property of being undefeatable,” they wrote. I saw a reflection of this as I was researching the history of jewelry: this is why turquoise was often used for thrones.

Is this why precious stones are used in objects of daily use, too?

This reflects both the love for the stones and the importance given to the sultan and to pomp in palatial living.

Most of the objects belonged to the sultan and spread from there to all parts of life as indicators of wealth. A cradle could be an item of jewelry, for example—or consider how all the places the sultan would live in the palace were domed, and the ornaments hanging from the domes were always visible as symbols of potency. Above all, he was required to wear the traditional headdress, the equivalent of the European crown, and these must be splendid. When a sultan greeted an envoy in his reception and he found the ordinary headdress insufficient, he added two extra layers to his turban to make the “splendid headdress,” a symbol

Padişahın takacağı mücevherlerin nasıl olacağına karar veren bir merci var mı?

Bu kuyumcubaşının beğenisi ama yalnızca bu da söylenemez. O dönemin beğenisi neyse ona paralel gidiyor, ondan süzülüp geliyor. 16. yüzyıl kumaş veya çinilerindeki müthiş çiçekleri ve renkleri düşünün, aynısı mücevherde de var.

Tabii bir anlamda moda diyebiliriz. Pırlanta kullanımı örneğin 17. yüzyılda Avrupa’da başlıyor. 17. yüzyılda analitik geometri ortaya konuyor ve pırlantanın o çok yüzlü kesimi, analitik geometriden sonra ortaya çıkıyor. Bize de 18. yüzyılda geliyor ve çok parladığı için tabi ki çok seviliyor. Padişah portrelerine baktığımız zaman kaftanların iki tarafını birbirine tutturan çaprast denen bantların silme elmas veya pırlanta olduğunu görüyoruz. Örneğin çok renklilik 16. ve 17. yüzyılın başlarına özgüyken; çok abartılı elmas ve pırlanta kullanımı 18. yüzyıldadır diyebiliriz. Bu da o dönemlerin beğenisi ve modası. Sonuçta tarihi en parlak yansıtan ayna mücevherdir.

of his potency. It was the most important piece of apparel for him and not just for him either, as it could be worn by important pashas or the women beside him, too.

Was there a body that decided how the jewelry the sultan wore would be?

That was up to taste of the chief jeweler, but there’s more to it. Whatever was the fashion of that era he would follow it.

The fabulous flowers and colors of the fabric or chinaware of the 16th century were likewise present in jewelry. We could call it fashion, in a sense. The use of diamonds, for example, started in Europe in the 17th century. Analytical geometry was first proposed in the 17th century and the multifaceted cut of diamonds first appeared after this science developed. This cut came to Turkey in the 18th century and garnered acclaim for its sparkle. When we look at portraits of sultans, we see that what held the two sides of the caftans together was the ground gem or diamond called “çaprast.” For example, while multicolored gems were unique to the 16th and early 17th centuries, elaborate stones were peculiar to the 18th. Those were the tastes and fashions then. Thus the jewellery is the bright mirror which reflects the history.

Bu ikisi, ancak 1873’te birleşip tek şehir olabilmişler. O zamana kadar şakayla karışık “Avrupa’nın en büyük köyü” olarak anılan Peşte, müthiş bir yapılaşma rüzgârına kapılarak bugün hâlâ büyük bölümü ayakta olan saray yavrusu apartmanlarına ve ağaçlık geniş bulvarlarına kavuşmuş.

I feared to go very far from the station, as we had arrived late and would start as near the correct time as possible. The impression I had was that we were leaving the West and entering the East; the most western of splendid bridges over the Danube, which is here of noble width and depth, took us among the traditions of Turkish rule.”

Such is how Bram Stoker began “Dracula,” which became one of the most famous novels ever. And what he writes is true— Budapest indeed is a wonderful place. Split into two by the Danube, the city consists of green, hilly Buda on the west and Pest, occupying a plain stretching all the way from the riverbank to the mountains of Transylvania, on the east. The two were only joined in 1873 to form a single city. Until then, Pest was half-jokingly known as “Europe’s biggest village.” After a period of great development Pest gained its almost palacelike apartments (most of which still stand) and expansive treelined boulevards.

Going back further in history, to the 16th century, one is faced with a completely different view. The city’s Buda side was the

Buda Kalesi birçok defalar yıkılıp yeniden yapıldığı için bugün bu tepede göreceklerinizin çok azını gerçek tarihi yapılar oluşturuyor. Yine de II. Dünya Savaşı’ndaki son yıkım sonrasında yeniden orijinaline sadık kalınarak ayağa kaldırılan kalede ve iç mahallelerinde, Barok bina cepheleri, Gotik pencereler ve kapılar ile Orta Çağ stili tüccar evleri sizi bekliyor.

headquarters of the Ottoman army as it came up against the gates of Vienna. Buda Castle, which was built on a high hill, was seized by the Turks in 1541 and remained under their rule for roughly 150 years.

One of the best ways to be introduced to a city is to look upon it from above, and for this purpose Buda Castle is ideal—and thanks to a funicular system, it’s very easy to get to the top in two minutes!

As Buda Castle was demolished and rebuilt several times, very little of what you will see on this hill today is truly of historical construction. Still, in the castle and its inner neighborhoods, which were resurrected following the most recent destruction of World War II, you can expect baroque façades, gothic windows and doors, and medieval-style merchants’ houses.

Foremost among the places to see in the castle is the Royal Palace. Here are the National Gallery, where works by important Hungarian artists from the Middle Ages to the present day are exhibited; Ludwig Museum, where the personal contemporary art collection of the German chocolate millionaire Peter Ludwig is on display; National Széchényi

Budapeşte Tarih Müzesi burada. Kale burçlarından birinin eteklerindeki eski Osmanlı mezarlığından kalma küçük bir yeşillik alanda ise birkaç Osmanlı gazisine ait kavuklu mezar taşları dikkati çekiyor.

Budapeşte’deki Osmanlı izleri bununla da sınırlı değil. Osmanlıların ismini Budin olarak telaffuz ettiği kalenin son valisi Abdurrahman Abdi Arnavut Paşa’nın da kale bölgesinde bir anıt mezarı var. 1686’da az bir kuvvetle Haçlı ordusunun kuşatmasına karşı üç buçuk aylık bir direniş gösteren paşanın kahramanlığı Macarları bile öyle etkilemiş ki kalenin düşmesinin ardından onun için diktikleri anıt mezara şunları yazmışlar: “145 yıllık Türk egemenliğinin son Buda Valisi Abdurrahman Abdi Arnavut Paşa, bu yerin yakınında 1686 Eylül ayının ikinci günü öğleden sonra yaşamının 70. yılında maktul düştü. Kahraman düşmandı, rahat uyusun!”

Library, where copies of every book and piece of printed material are kept; and Budapest History Museum, which documents in a striking manner the stages Buda underwent from the time of Ottoman rule through to the Second World War. At the foot of one of the castle towers is a small green area that remains from an old Ottoman graveyard, where notably there are turban-topped gravestones for fallen Ottoman soldiers.

These aren’t the only traces of the Ottomans in Budapest. Abdurrahman Abdi Arnavut Pasha, the last governor of the castle (whose name was pronounced “Budin” by the Ottomans), has a memorial grave in the castle area. With a small force, the pasha warded off the Christian army for three and a half months in 1686 before succumbing, impressing even his Hungarians to the extent that they wrote on the memorial grave they erected for him after the castle fell, “The last governor of the 145-year-long Turkish occupation of Buda, Abdurrahman Abdi Arnavut Pasha fell at this place in the afternoon of the second day of September 1686, when he was seventy years old. He was a heroic enemy; may he rest in peace!”

Habsburg Hanedanı’nın da süslü termal banyolar inşa ederek bu geleneği sürdürmesi sayesinde, şehirde bugün hepsi termal suyla doldurulmuş çok sayıda hamam, spa merkezi, açık hava havuzu ve su parkı mevcut. Hatta komünist rejimden kalma bir alışkanlıkla, Budapeşte sakinleri bu banyolardan doktor reçetesiyle yararlanabiliyor. Şehrin şifalı termal sularından yararlanmak isteyenler, tarihi Gellert ve Szechenyi banyolarını da ziyaret edebilir. It was the Romans who first took notice of the close to 120 thermal springs that made and continues to make Budapest one of Europe’s foremost spa cities, although it can be said that it was the Ottomans who, in the 16th and 17th centuries, brought bath culture to the level of an art. The baths of Kiraly, Rudas, and Rac, which stand out with their traditional Ottoman domes, are still used by Budapestians as the heritage of that period. Unlike typical Turkish design, these baths have pools as well, and some of them have recently been restored to be open for visitation. And thanks to the Habsburg dynasty’s continuation of this tradition by building elaborate thermal baths, there are many baths, spas, outdoor swimming pools, and water parks in the city today, all filled with thermal waters. In fact, thanks to a habit left over from the communist regime, Budapest’s inhabitants can receive prescriptions for these baths from doctors. Those who want to enjoy the city’s healing thermal waters can visit the historic baths of Gellert and Szechenyi, too. Vörösmarty Square, which appears before you at the end of the pedestrian thoroughfare, is home to Gerbeaud—the city’s deepest-rooted pastry shop—and, every December, a Christmas Market.

TOMB OF GÜL BABA The modest tomb of Gül Baba, who participated in the campaign of Budin upon the invitation of Suleiman the Magnificent, died here, and was subsequently buried, is on a side street on the hills of Buda, near Moscow Square.

ANDRÁSSY AVENUE This 2.5-kilometer boulevard that extends along Pest and most of the monuments on it were built in 1896, the thousandth anniversary of the arrival of the Hungarians in the region. Immediately underneath the avenue is Continental Europe’s first subway line.

As for coffee culture—very few people know that Budapest is the true birthplace of coffee culture in Europe, though the first cities that come to mind may indeed be Paris and Vienna.

With the Turks, coffee culture came to the city a century before coming to Paris and Vienna and continued through the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Its cafes, which for writers practically served as literary clubs, were known to number 591 in 1900; but with the death of most of the country’s important writers in World War II, this coffee culture disappeared. Today, we are witnessing a revival of the city’s historic cafes thanks to new investors. Those who visit the still-operational Muvesz, Callas, New York Palace, Central, or Hadik might sense a sweet reminder of turn-of-the-century Budapest in these cafés.

bert Mahallesi’nde son otuz yıldır her şey aynı. Klasik apartmanlar kimliğini korumuş, mahalle marketinin raflarına tanıdık mallar yine sıralanmış, ilkokulum ve köşesindeki şeker dükkânı bıraktığım yerde duruyor. Cinquantenaire isimli, şehrin en görkemli parkındaki heybetli üç kemerin altından geçerek tarihi kent merkezine giriyorum.

1801 tarihinde yapılmış Borsa binasının karşısında duran otele yerleştikten hemen sonra rotamı şehrin en can alıcı noktası olan Grand Place’a çeviriyorum. Attığım her adımda burnuma iştah açıcı kokular geliyor. Ben görmeyeli şehir,

Right after I settle in my room at the hotel just across the Stock Exchange building which was built in 1801, I head off to Grand Place, the liveliest part of the city. With every step

Her köşe başını Brüksel’in meşhur waffles’cıları kapmış. Zaten açık havada pişirilen hamurun kokusu uzun süre peşinizden geliyor. Sonunda dayanamayıp bir tane almaya karar veriyorum. Üzeri delikli sıcacık hamuru nasıl bir aksesuar ile süsleyeceğim ise başlı başına bir mesele. Belçikalı çikolata butiği Leonidas veya artık Ülker’in kardeşi olan Godiva’dan sıcak çikolata ile mi doldursam yoksa dondurma topları ve kremayı mı tercih etsem? Bir başka Belçikalı gurme çikolatacı Neuhaus’un albenili vitrinine bakarken duvardaki tabela dikkatimi çekiyor. Mağazanın yer aldığı binada 1852’de ünlü Fransız yazar Victor Hugo yaşamış. O an, aynada kalori hesabı yapan halimi görüyorum ve yazarın ağlayarak okuduğum Sefiller kitabı geliyor aklıma.

I take, my nose begins to smell appetizing flavors. Since my last visit, the city has well highlighted its gastronomical identity. The streets leading to the Place are dotted with chocolate shops, confectioneries and small, boutique style cheese shops and delis. There are Brussels’ famous waffles shops at every corner. The scent of the dough cooked in open air follows you everywhere. At the end, I can’t resist anymore and decide to buy one. How to top this spongy hot dough is a serious challenge. Should I fill it with hot chocolate from Belgium’s chocolate boutique Leonidas or Ülker’s sister Godiva or go for ice cream balls and whipped cream?

As I check the appealing window of Neuhaus, another Belgian gourmet chocolate house, the sign on the wall catches my attention: Famous French novelist Victor Hugo lived in the same building in 1852. At that very moment I picture myself counting the calories while looking at the mirror and remember his Les Misérables book which I read crying.

Daha da meraklıları yakındaki Le Museedu Costume et de la Dentelle’e (Kostüm ve Dantel Müzesi) gidip Brüksel’in asırlardır süregelen dantel işçiliği geleneğini yakından inceliyor.

Madem klasiklerden başladık yolumu şehrin sembolü haline gelmiş Manneken Pis isimli küçük çocuk heykelinin olduğu Rue de l’Etuve’den geçiriyorum. Bu minik heykel ile ilgili birçok efsane dolaşıyor etrafta. Benim kulağıma gelen ise şehirde çıkan yangını küçük çocuğun sulayarak söndürmüş olması! Aslında çoğu Brüksellinin söylediği gibi önemli olan turistlere ilginç bir hikâye yaratmak. Şu an fotoğrafı en fazla çekilen Brüksellinin, Manneken Pis olduğunu öğrendiğimde pek şaşırmıyorum.

Women who are keen on setting elegant dinner tables continue to swarm the shop. Those who are even keener can visit Le Museedu Costume et de la Dentelle (Costume and Lace Museum) nearby to examine the age long lace tradition of Brussels.

Since we started with the classics, I steer my way to Rue l’Etuve with the famous boy statue called Manneken Pis. There are many stories about this tiny statue. According to the one I heard, this boy had extinguished a fire in the city by taking a leak! In fact, as many of the locals would say, the only thing that matters is creating an interesting story for tourists. It is not surprising for me to learn that Manneken Pis was the most photographed resident of Brussels.

stacked in front of the restaurants on this narrow street and restaurant owners do their best to catch my attention. There are stone ovens or fireplaces in some of the restaurants with fires rising so high that they almost reach the ceiling. I stop

by Chez Leon, the number one classic of Brussels when it comes to seafood. The 160 years old company’s reputation has gone beyond Brussels with chain restaurants at metropolitan cities like Paris and London. At this point, the reputation of Belgium’s fried potatoes known as “frites” should be clarified. Because they are fried two times, they are really crisp. So if you begin eating them you cannot stop until they’re all finished.

After lunch I head off to Rue Antoine Dansaert. Impressive with its designer shops, the neighborhood is not a touristic attraction although it became very popular in recent years.

In fact all the streets in the area from the Stock Exchange building to Place St. Catherine are very colorful and lively especially in the evenings. Known as Brussels’ SOHO, these narrow streets are full of small diners, stylish and modern 12 | 2012 S K Y L I F E B U S I N E S S

Artık hava iyice karardı, şehrin gece görüntüsü ise bir hayli heyecan verici. Dönüş yolunda gördüğüm bazı yüksek binaların üzerine Belçikalı çizgi roman kahramanları: Tin Tin (Tenten), Spirou, Schtroumpfs (Şirinler) gibi ünlü karakterlerin resimleri yapılmış ve gece karanlıkta görüntüler aydınlatılıyor. Bazı imajlar ise apartmanların üzerine projeksiyon yoluyla yansıtılarak çeşitli illüzyonlar oluşturulmuş. Şehrin sokakları gerçekten de şaşırtıcı. Brüksel’in kültürel kimliği, aynen gastronomik lezzetleri gibi en ummadığınız yerde karşınıza çıkıveriyor.

The open space in front of the cathedral is full of small shops selling goods and gifts for the New Year’s Eve. As I walk behind the cathedral, I come to Quaiaux Briques where there are a number of fine dining restaurants. The place is like an oasis for flavor seeking gourmets with restaurants serving the best of Brussels cuisine on the both sides of the wide street. As the evening falls, the city looks quite exciting. On my way back, I see the illuminated figures of Belgian cartoon characters like Tin Tin, Spirou and the Smurfs on the facades of some high rise buildings. Some of the images are projected on the buildings, creating illusions. The streets of Brussels are really surprising. Just like gastronomical flavors, symbols of Brussels’ cultural identity show up where you least expect them.

Olivo Barbieri’nin fotoğraf merakı 1970’lerde başladı. İlk fotoğraf serilerini Avrupa ve Asya’daki bazı şehirlerin hem doğal hem yapay ışıklarla ortaya çıkan görselleri üzerine hazırladı. 1990’larda kendince yorumladığı tilt shift tekniğiyle (küçük ve orta formatlı makinalarda odak noktasını manipüle ederek maket ve minyatür benzeri görüntüler elde etmeye yarayan teknik) Site Specific_ Serisi’ne başladı. Bu serinin son sergisi Site Specific_ LONDON 30 Kasım’da ziyaretçilere açıldı ve 12 Ocak 2013’e kadar devam ediyor.

WHO IS HE? Olivo Barbieri’s interest in photography began in the 1970s.

His first series of photographs were of images that appeared in certain cities in Europe and Asia, produced by both natural and artificial light. In the 1990s, he began his “Site Specific_” series using his own interpretation of the tilt-shift photography technique (which allows one to capture model- and miniaturelike images by manipulating the focal point in small- and medium-format cameras) . “Site Specific_LONDON,” the latest exhibition in this series, opened on November 30 and will continue until January 12, 2013.

Bir şehri nasıl çekeceğinize nasıl karar veriyorsunuz?

Tilt-shift kullanmaya 1999’da başladım ve başarılı olmak için 10 yılımı verdim. 2008’de konum odaklı seri için tiltshift kullanmayı bıraktım. Başta şehirlerin belli kısımlarını plastik modellere dönüştürmekle ilgilendim. Planlanmalarını ortaya çıkaran yapay bir süreç bu. Daha sonrasında daha ötesine gidip çizimden planlanmaya geçtim.

Hava fotoğraflarınız geleneksel hava fotoğraflarından oldukça farklı. Bu tarza yoğunlaşmanıza ne sebep oldu?

Görüneni anlamakta ne kadar duyunun (fiziksel ya da teknik) gerektiğini anlamaya çalışıyorum. Yapmaya çalıştığım şey, algısal olarak çekilen alanın en iyi şekilde anlaşılması için bir hikâye oluşturmak ve şehrin şu anki halinin şeklini anlatan daha büyük bir resim çizmek için sonrasında bunu diğer bölgelerle ilişkilendirmek.

How do you decide how you are going to photograph a city?

I started using tilt-shift [photography] in 1999 and I’ve given myself ten years to dig into it. I quit using tilt-shift in the “Site Specific_” series in 2008. At first, I was interested in the transformation of bits of cities into a plastic model; it’s a virtual process to bring into question their planning.

Then I decided to go beyond—to start from the drawing, the planning.

Your aerial images are quite different from conventional aerial images. What made you choose this style?

I’m interested in understanding how many senses (no matter whether they are physical or technical) are needed to perceive what is seen. The challenge is to succeed building a story that perceptually discloses hic et nunc the portrayed location then to relate it with other locations in order to draw a bigger picture that describes the shape of the contemporary city.

en büyük ve ani deneyimi temsil ediyor. Yakında aşırı derecede kalabalık bir seviyeye ulaşacaklar ve bunun sonuncunda su, enerji ve alanda sürdürebilirlik zorluğu ile karşı karşıya kalınacak. Ben modern şehrin şeklini tanımlamaya çalışıyorum.

Henüz fotoğraflamadığınız fakat fotoğraflamak istediğiniz bir şehir var mı? İdeal olarak birkaç şehir daha eklemek isterim: Pekin, Mekke… Fakat 2013’te, projenin başlangıcından 10 yıl sonra, bu projeyi sonuçlanmış olarak kabul edeceğim. Site Specific_ Projesi 2003’te, dünyanın birkaç bölgesini içine katarak başladı. Şu an otuzdan fazla şehri içerecek olan bir kitap üzerinde çalışıyorum. 2013 sonbaharında Aperture tarafından yayınlanacak.

What impresses you the most in a city?

Cities and contemporary metropolises represent the biggest and most “sudden” experiment humanity has ever realized on earth. Soon they will get to levels of extreme overcrowding, issuing a sustainability challenge (water, energy, space)…

I try to define the contemporary city’s shape.

Is there specific city you haven’t photographed yet but want to photograph?

Ideally, I’d like to add few more cities: Beijing, Mecca... Even if in 2013, ten years from its beginning, I will consider the project as concluded. The Site Specific_ project started in 2003, involving several of the world’s areas. I’m currently working on a book (to be published by Aperture in fall 2013) that will cover more than thirty cities.

Mission Mahallesi’nin kalbinde bulunan restoran, tam 13 yıldır hem öğlen hem de akşam yemekleri sunuyor. hen, in the 1970s, the chef Charlie Palmer began to apply the farm to table idea, no one knew whether it will grow big. He was the first, and now he is followed by many. One of his 13 restaurants “Dry Creek Kitchen” located in Healdsburg, Sonoma, offers excellent and sophisticated food prepared by the chef Dustin Valette, who uses only local farmers’ produce.

Whether you order from a la carte or chef’s menu, it will be an unusual adventure. Treat yourself to home-made selection of cured meats. Feel a fresh halibut’s fillet covered with pieces of brioche melt in your mouth, or how gentle is the duck’s breast with fig confit.

Same is also true with what is on the chef’s menu that truly surprises with unforgettable tastes – wild salmon with pickled watermelon and mango sauce, sweet corn soup with homesmoked shrimps, fried tuna fish with smoked duck, porcini puree and wakame mushrooms, wagyu beaf, and a selection of ice-creams with surprising tastes – dates and herbs, saffron and pistachios, raspberry and pepper. Our lounge at Ataturk International Airport has recently been reopened, implementing a totally new concept developed with our catering partner, Turkish Do&Co. The new features are evident as one enters the lounge, where open spaces create a welcoming atmosphere. Access is simple, just scan the barcode on your boarding pass. There is also a staff counter where agents are available to deal with special needs or requests.

Once in the lounge, comfortable seats are available in multiple areas with different amenities and distractions. Both hot and cold food is always available at a number of stations throughout the facility and is changed to fit the time of day.

Numerous conveniently located carts provide a wide selection of beverages. For those traveling with children, a special play area is provided, and those wishing to freshen up will find shower facilities available.
