The scout movement mak.es no distinctions o f faith, language, or race, a n d aim s to en cou rag e young people to becom e enterprising a n d responsible members o f society, supporters o f universal p e a c e a n d brotherhood, ıvhile at the sam e tim e loyal to their country a n d nation, honest, a n d sensitive to culture a n d nature. One o f the fir s t cou n tries to in tro d u ce the scou t m ovem ent w as Turkey, ıvhich establish ed its first scout club on 15 February 1912, fo u r years after the movement h a d been lau n ched in England. The club was started by Ahmet Robenson, o f m ixed English a n d Turkish parentage, ıvho ıvas then physical educa tio n te a c h e r a t G a la ta s a r a y Im p eria l S chool. Before long new scout clubs ıvere set up by İstanbul Boys High School a n d by D arüşşafaka High School, a n d gradually the movement spread to other Turkish provinces. İn the early years Turkish scouts closely folloıved the Britisb model. The movement ıvas encouraged by the Ottoman D epartm ent o f E du cation b ecau se o f its em phasis on health, integrity, a n d patriotism . Not only Turkish Müslim boys, but those o f other fa ith s ıvere attracted to the movement a n d began to form their oum clubs. İn 1912, H arold Parfitt, a B elgian lea d er o f the in t e r n a t io n a l s c o u t m ovem ent ıvas in vited to İ s t a n b u l by th e O ttom an gov ern m en t, a n d set about establishin g a T u rkish S co u t Association.
