Post-Modernisı buildings whose features attract our interest: unusuat colours and combinations of materials, the forms on the .façade and the relationship with their environs. This new architecture has ensconced ilselj widely; not only on the city outskirts in high-rise housing estates, office blocks, shopping mal/s and hotels, but in inner city districts !ike Beyoğlu and Ortaköy where the urban texture is u nder revision. These buildings display Ottoman house plans and roof structures, Seljuk arehes and porta/s, classical Roman and Greek elements, or baroque jlourishes, both singiy or in combination; in replica or distorted; sametimes functional but not necessarily. Although there are justified reservations about daiming that Turkey ever experienced Modemism in precisely the western sense, this new trend which emerged specifical~y to challenge westem Modernism has most certainly entered our lives, and with unexpected abruptness; perhaps as an indicator of the diversity which characterises ou r age. It might not be as audacious as its western counterparts, but nonetheless it seems to have.found a niche for itselj. •
