wing to economic conditions, commercial airline transport in Turkey, which had just emerged from its W ar of Independence and become a Rebuplic, did not • receive the attention it was due un til the 1930's and la ter. Purchasing two King-Bird passenger carriers from America in 1933, Turkey joined th e m w ith two Junker- type planes bought previously from Germany and formed a fleet of four. The State Airline Management Administration, established on 20 May 1936 and attached to the Ministry of Defense , was the beginning of today's Turkish Airlines. In 1936 the number of planes was inc reased to eight , and regular scheduled flights were operated for the first time. The fledgling organization was turned into the Directorale General of State Air Linesin 193[' and placed u nder the control of the Ministry of Transport, and flights to Elaz ı ğ, Erzurum, Sivas, Afyon, Diyarbakır, Konya, Antalya, Adana , Gaziantep and Urfa were set up in turn. In 1945 , thirty-three new planes were added to the fleet and courses for hastesses were initiated. The first flight to a foreign count ry was to Athens in 1947. U nder a new agreement concluded in 1955 , air transport in Turkey came under the management of "Turkish Airline Ine." Shifting to the exclusive use of jetplanesin 1967, thejointly managed firm put DC-78, DC-9 10 and DC-9-30 type planes int o opera tio n. In 1971, the management rented th e re Boeing 707's and bought two mor e D C- 10 planes a year la ter. W ith the addition of Boeign 727-type planes in 1974, seating capacity rose to 4268. Buying out the foreign capital shares of the partnerspih , Turkish Airlines achieved its own identity in 1977. Its first purchase of a B-707 cargo plane in 1981 was followed by a second in 1982, and the fleet was further expanded in 1983 with Dash-7 type propeller planes Growing with every passing day, Turkish Airlines has also increased the number of its domestic and foreign flight s Fifty years fallawing its founding, with a fleet of thirty planes anda total seating capacity of 4081, Turkish Airlines offers the most modern , up -to-date service.
