Hâzineyi, hazine kethüdası korur, Yavuz Sultan Selim ’e ait olan akik mühürle dış kapısını mühürlerdi. Sultan, bu mührün kullanılmasını şöyle vasiyet etmişti. “ Benim altınla doldurduğum hâzineyi bundan sonra gelenlerden her kim mangır ile doldurursa hazine anın mührüyle mühürlensin ve illa benim mührümle mühürlenmekte devam olunsun!” Topkapı Sarayı, A tatürk’ün emriyle 1924’te müzeye dönüştürülünceye kadar da Hazine onun mührüyle mühürlendi.

taxes collected from the provinces even as they were em ptying out on the other through expenditures made for various purposes. Startıng from the second ha lf o f the 17th century in particular a number o f gold objects were melted down by the State and used to m int coins in periods o f economic straits. Some jevvelry even was melted down in this way and made anew. But, as ancestral mementoes, very few items o f high value as works o f art were actually affected. The Superintendent o f the Treasury protected it by sealing the outer door with an agate seal that had belonged to Selim I, who bequeathed its use as follows: “Am ong those who come after [me] vvhoever fills with inferior copper coins the Treasury that I have filled with gold, let the Treasury be sealed with his seal, b u t whatever happens may it continue to be sealed with m y seal!” A nd the Treasury was indeed sealed with his seal until Topkapı Palace was converted into a museum at A ta tü rk’s behest in 1924. □
