Sky Magazine - Episode 7

Page 1

We are a community of teen girl s across Ghana doing our thing and staying true to who we are through the choice s we make.

WHAT SKY STANDS FOR We celebrate the things we love and support each other in staying true to ourselves. To us it’s all about knowing what’s our thing and knowing what we just don’t want in our lives. It is about making choices that are true to us. We love hanging out too every vacation at the mall. Tell us whatever you’re passionate about and let’s get you covered. We connect with each other on Facebook and Instagram (@skygirlsgh), We also have a radio show on YFm 107.9 every Saturday at 3pm. To become a SKY Girl, take the pledge to stay true to yourself.

SKY PLEDGE I pledge to be true to myself and what I believe in To be who i am not who someone else thinks I should be I’ll hold tight to the things i’m all about like friends and dancing And I’ll stay away from yawa things I know i’m good without like backstabbing and smoking. Because knowing what’s my thing and what’s not my thing helps make me who I am. I will make choices that are true to me. I pledge to find my sky. Inbox us on Facebook (skygirlsgh) or whatsApp us on 054 012 4008 to let us know when you take the pledge.

Yooooooo sisters, This edition is loaded with all the good stuff you can think of. You might be confused as to why our cover isn’t the normal way around. But that’s what this edition is about – changing perspectives. I can bet we’ve all been in a situation where people made wrong assumptions about us. Well, we got you covered here: common misconceptions, why people make wrong assumptions and how to deal with them. Our second movie Sugar, Spice N’ Sauce: Back 2 School is out! Yes, I’m literally screaming. Can’t wait for y’all to see it. It’s 10x sugary, spicy and saucy. Run to our Youtube page (SKY Girls GH) to see it. It’s a whole snack! We decided not to spare our dads in this edition. Even though they are strict on us, they have some funny sayings that are so typical of them. If you know what I mean. Who doesn’t love food? We are back again with a recipe for you to try. We also featured the queen of food Kinorah. She is such a badass at cooking. She tells us all about her journey and how she followed her passion. Ooouuuu guess the SKY Guy featured? Aaron Adatsi! But don’t scream yet till you watch the Sugar, Spice N’ Sauce 2. Lol. Our favourite letter to my 16 year old article was written by Audrey, a young and inspiring graphic designer. So this edition is nothing like you have ever seen. Take a read and shine on!

-Thelma

We truly agree with the word Fri-Yay now because our Fridays are always lit! We have SKY Club meetings on Friday afternoons at some lucky schools. Our Club meetings are always loaded with fun challenges, interesting and deep discussions and a ton of pictures. 45 minutes and you’re gone! If there’s no SKY Girls Club in your school yet, fingers crossed, we might be there soon, or tell your teachers you want one! Here’s a peep at all the fun stuff we’ve been up to. Check if your school is repping.

I was one “wierdo” girl who was an introvert and had friends who engaged in yawa things like cheating and backstabbing. Then one day, a Facebook friend suggested the SKY Girls page to me. I liked the page and started following whatever was posted. It seemed interesting and I began to stalk even more. I was always looking out for the next post. I later took the pledge which made more sense to me, that was when my life changed. Even though it was still difficult for me to make bold choices at the start, I made up my mind to never miss any SKY competition, jams or hang outs. Through the hangouts and WhatsApp groups, I met so many other girls who are themselves and found myself socializing with all of them effortlessly. My shyness and low self-esteem vanished. We just bonded. It feels good to know that a whole community of 30,000 plus girls have my back all day errday and support me in my decisions. I’m a happy girl now because I am the best version of myself, following my passions and just doing my thing. I don’t associate with anything that is not true to me because the SKY pledge always lingers in my mind and restrains me from doing anything yawa. My favourite line of the pledge is “Because knowing what’s my thing and what’s not my thing helps make me who I am, I will make choices that are true to me” It is simply fun being me now! No need to fake, no need to resh, I’m just chill living the best version of myself. I’m so thankful for the SKY Girls community because it has impacted my life and I’m so sure of a great future now

If you loved the Sugar, Spice N’ Sauce, then you’re going to love Back 2 School even more. The Part Two is here and you’re not ready yet!

You remember Marcia, the sh33 girl. Well you won’t believe her character in this Part Two. Marcia, recently converted SKY Girl, wants to follow her passion of being a fashion designer, but she is faced with opposition from her mother who wants her to be a business tycoon like her. In her mother’s words, a fashion designer is only “a glorified seamstress”. She manages to attend the same Senior High school with her friends – the SKY Girls (Alice, Maame and Naa). They survive through school together until she falls into the bad books of the mean girls’ squad in the school all because the school prefect and apparently the finest boy who plays basketball has feelings for her. Will she make it through the first year of school with her friendships and reputation still intact?

Watch the movie on our YouTube channel SKY Girls GH. Peep the pictures from the premiere at the Silverbird Cinema. It was super lit!

MARCIA Are you any different in real life from the Marcia character you played? Co-incidentally, I can so relate with the character Marcia in the movie because, my mum wanted me to do business but I wanted to do entertainment. Currently, I am doing a bit of both Who was your BFF on set? Aboagye

SKY GIRLS (Alice+Naa+Maame) Have your characters evolved in any way? No - in part 1 the SKY Girls recognise how important it is to stay true to themselves. So they are just being true in part 2.

GLAM GIRLS (Nicole+Mina+Ama)

What’s changed since you’ve been part of these movies?

Who is the peace maker in the squad?

We seem to have made impact in the lives of the young girls. When we visit the schools, the love is real and we are so glad to be a part of this great movie. We love y’all right back.

It has to go to Ama Describe your squad in three words? Evil, scheming and regretful

WHOLE CAST Who was the funniest amongst you? Damien - he always has a joke to tell about every scene Who was the most annoying? Charles - the way he teases is unbearable.

What attracted Kwamena to Marcia in the first place? I think it was beauty at the start, but they really listened to each other and it helped that they shared a common interest in that they hated sisha Were you attracted to anyone on set? Lol, I possibly couldn’t tell you! No, we are all really good friends now!

Ghanaian Dads! Smh. We love them and wouldn’t trade them for anything in the world even though they make us nuts sometimes. From being clueless about fashion to trying to act cool in front of our friends which is totally embarrassing for us. Do you remember Maame’s dad from the Sugar Spice N Sauce 1? Lol If you’re growing up with a Ghanaian dad, we’re 100% sure you’ve heard him say some of these phrases at least once.

“GO AND ASK YOUR MOTHER”” Dad knows there’s no chance of you getting to go to that party. But he won’t say anything oo. He’ll just shift it to mum to break your heart with a “NO” because he knows that mum dier no shaking. Chale that tossing can bore.

“BOYS ONLY WANT ONE THING” No matter how casual and harmless your male bestie is, your dad is convinced he only wants one thing in the end: sex. Call for homework help: sex. Birthday present: sex. Offers you a spare pen: sex. Breathing around you, and your dad clearly thinks he wants sex!

“I WAS ALWAYS THE FIRST IN MY CLASS”” Eiiii as for this one! Our dads are always going on about how they were the best students in their class when they were in school. Very serious, always studying and not wasting time as children of nowadays are supposedly doing. So because of that, no slacking for you oo! You must study saa and make sure you also blow your exams. But we’re curious oo, if all our dads were first in class, who was last? Looool.

“YOU’RE NOT GOING OUT IN THAT”” That moment when you feel like you have slayed and kinda have your swag on knowing that when you walk in front of your dad at the living room, he’ll say “that’s my girl” in his head. Well, the opposite happens when your dad becomes chief of fashion police. Who knew that a man wearing jogging trousers, a 15-year-old polo t-shirt with sneakers will know anything about skater skirts?

“INSERTS LAME DAD JOKE”” Your dad’s jokes from the 80’s are so lame but he undoubtedly thinks they are so hilarious. So funny that he has to tell it to all your friends. You have actually come to the conclusion that your dad thinks his coolness level depends on how much he is able to embarrass you in front of your friends. Regardless though, we know it’s all love. Dads make life so much better, and a few years from now, we’ll look back and just smh at all the memories.

We almost always have our hands full with stuff we either have to do or like to do. From studying, to checking on social media, house chores, surfing the internet, reading, watching movies and hanging out with our friends. And whether we like it or not, sometimes people around us will be watching and they’ll make assumptions based on what they see and hear. The tough part is that their assumptions about you may not always be true and it can really hurt when you find out that the kind of conclusions people have drawn about you are totally false and even insulting to your true character.

Here’s the thing - people are gonna talk anyway. Someone once said - if you don’t want to be talked about, then say nothing, do nothing, and be nothing! But do we wanna ‘be nothing’? Of course not! You only live once, and you don’t want to spend your one life trying to impress people or make them like you. Other people’s opinions don’t define who you are as a person. Only you define you! So don’t give a care about what people think about you, simply do you with your head held high and have fun being you!

Us teens of the 21st century are free- spirited and express ourselves in several ways through our fashion style, speech and more. This is awesome! Unfortunately, we sometimes end up being misinterpreted and misjudged. Check out this list and see if you’ve ever found yourself in here.

Teen girls who have a lot of male friends are flirts (OH HOW) Teens who wear braces are spoilt brats from rich homes (SMH) Teens who are big in size are lazy (REALLY) A lot of teens smoke (ASHOCK) Teens who don’t like talking are proud and full of themselves. (WE CAN’T THINK FAR) Teen girls who have the tom-boy fashion style are lesbians (AGAIN…SMH) Can you relate to any of these? It’s unbelievable that people will form such opinions about us.People will take the easy route and judge others based on their physical appearance or what they post on social media. People are quick to imagine and find a reason for why someone will act in a particular way. The problem is, more often than not, their assumptions are wrong. Lots of people aren’t interested in getting to know a person. So what do they do? They just make stuff up! But if they did try to get to know us, they’d probably find out that the girl with the braces has a problem with her teeth

she’s trying to get fixed, or that most teens find smoking uncool and yawa, or that some people are simply introverts and don’t like talking much, or that the girl with lots of male friends just gets along better with guys, or that not all girls like skirts and dresses- they like shorts and pants and it does not make them lesbians! Here’s the thing, let’s not allow the judgement of others hold us back from being afraid to express ourselves. Let’s walk through life confident about our choices to say no to yawa things and yes to our passions and all the things that make us happy!

You must be joking?! - that’s the reaction we had when we found out that people assume that we smoke shisha or tobacco because we are tomboyish, dyed our hair, slay hard or love to have fun. I mean seriously? Most people our age don’t even smoke – in fact, 9 out of 10 teens don’t smoke. Don’t get it wrong, teens of the 21st century are so woke now and super smart - they know better and stay away from tobacco products, including cigarettes and shisha. Here are two reason why this misconception exists

Teens who do smoke are the minority and so they stick out like a sore thumb They say they smoke to try and show off, but in reality they wouldn’t touch the stuff So don’t believe the hype sis and don’t even feel pressured. It’s all unreal. What we do know for sure:

Shisha is tobacco, it’s exactly the same as cigarettes but hiding under a pretty dress and designer perfume – be smart and don’t fall for it The SKY Generation knows smoking is yawa – we don’t need to pretend to be 100% swagged up But in case you’re tobacco - trapped. Here are two hacks to stay true that you should have at your fingertips. Say it’s not your thing

Walk away. Our best bet is people realize someday that they had it all wrong that most teen smoke. But in the meantime, we’re going to just have fun being us and staying true to who we are!

1. So many people don’t know the face behind the famous food blog – Telande World and those mouth- watering YouTube videos. Who is this food goddess and how are you so good at what you do?

Food

blogger

I’m Kinorah Awini, a Ghanaian based African food blogger with the blog name “Telande”. Translated from the Ghanaian Kusasi language of the North, Telande means ‘eat with me’. My passion for food has paved my way to blogging, photography and food styling and I always find myself happy and smiling when engaging in the beautiful process of cooking from using raw ingredients through to plating. I never stop learning and experimenting.

2. What was your inspiration to pursue this career? Throughout Africa, the influence of social media platforms has drawn an appetite for foodies and many other people alike to develop more interest in

20

local ingredients and foods. With the aid of this boom, I decided to set out on a journey to rebrand the presentation of our local African foods and ingredients. I believe Africans have a lot of interesting ingredients yet limited recipes. So I see it as my mission to use our local ingredients to create new and exciting recipes as well as spice up our local ones. I try to make my recipes as simple as possible, so everyone can follow along and try their hand at something new.

3. So what is your schedule like on a regular day? There’s no specific timeline to my job unless I have a meeting with clients but on a normal day I go search for ingredients then go to Telande studio at 10am and brainstorm on new ideas with my team, we shoot, do a lot of tastings till we’re tired then we call it a day.

4. Do you go about creating recipes? How I come up with new recipes or how I get my inspiration for my recipes are questions people ask a lot. I don’t have any formal training as a cook or recipe developer; everything I know I have learnt from home, TV, when I eat out and cook books. Aside the fact that I love cooking, creating new recipes is super exciting for me because I always love people’s reactions and expressions whenever I present a new recipe.

5. What’s your secret ingredient to make any food yummy? I don’t have any “specific ingredient” that will turn a bad meal to a yummy meal, I don’t think there is any ingredient like that. It depends on what you are cooking unless we talking magic potions here, but I looooove garlic! Garlic makes everything smell and taste good so that probably will be my magic ingredient.

6. What is your favourite Ghanaian dish to cook? This is so unfair to the other dishes but my favourite Ghanaian dish I love cooking is goat meat okra soup.

7. What’s the funniest thing someone assumed about you that wasn’t true? Someone met me in person and I introduced myself and the Telande brand and she was like “no way!” She thought the person behind the Telande was a matured chubby woman just because I am always surrounded with sumptuous meals.

8. People say you’re a “slay queen” – what do you think about that? I always say… gosh! Ignorance is bliss, I feel people love to judge from a distance especially from social media which I don’t blame them because it has become a normal thing people do, but if only they knew the big dreams this slay queen has!

9. What’s the one thing that you shun? I can’t be at one place for a long time. I prefer moving around trying, learning new things and getting inspirations. Basically, I am more of an outdoor person so what I will say is not my thing will have to be routine jobs.

10. You’re an inspiration for most SKY Girls to pursue their dreams, do you want to tell your fans anything? Take things you are passionate about seriously, you never know where it will take you, and always have confidence in yourself.

1. Some people think I’m childish or

behave like a baby because of my small voice. It sometimes hurts when they associate my maturity with this

2. I am assumed to be lazy because I’m a little fat but I am always the fastest to sweep my work plot –

3. People think I apply cream on my bum to make it big but it’s hereditary 5. They say my twin brother and

I will marry just because he is over protective

4. People think I am a bad girl because I have more than one piercing in my ear, but it’s tradition. My mummy did it for me 6. Peeps say my twin and I are lesbians because we do and go everywhere to together but that’s what twins do right? They are almost inseparable

7. People think I like

boys because they always see me with boys but the truth is that I am comfortable in the midst of boys. I lived with my four brothers for 12 years before my parents gave me a sister

8. People think I’m

rough and beat people because I am Nigerian, isn’t that discrimination?

9. People assume I’m self-centered

because I am introvert and don’t like making a lot of friends but there’s not a day that people don’t holla at me when I am in public

So here are two things. Next time you find yourself quickly making judgements about others, remember things aren’t always what you think! Take the time to get to know someone, and who knows, you might find your new BFF in someone you would never have thought of. And secondly, when someone makes judgements about you, remember to stay true, and us SKY sisters have got your back!

skrr skrr

1. When we saw you in the Sugar, Spice N’ Sauce: Back 2 School, we were awed! Finally, an opportunity to get upclose with you. Tell us more about yourself My full name is Aaron Adatsi. I’m popularly known as Cyril from YOLO, and quite recently as Kwamena in Sugar, Spice N’ Sauce 2. I’m a final year film student majoring in directing at NAFTI. I’m also into TV presenting, public speaking and venturing into radio soon. I’m from a family of 5 and the 2nd of 3 boys.

4. What is the one thing people believe about you that’s totally false? People believe I’m the same in real life as the characters I played on screen. So it’s easy to assume I have the same strengths and weaknesses as them. There may some similarities, but there are definitely a lot of differences!

5. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given

2. Are you involved in other things apart from acting? If yes, what are they?

The best advice I have ever heard is to never compete with anyone.Be yourself and do your thing. The race is not for the swift.Be prayerful, smart, hardworking and determined.

I do a little network marketing on the side and I’m also a member of an international travel club.

6. Share your biggest pet peeve with us

3. What’s the biggest challenge about taking on this role in the Sugar, Spice N’ Sauce movie? The role in Sugar, Spice N’ Sauce 2 wasn’t really challenging because most of the characters are young just like me. So the chemistry was built immediately we got to know each other and the shoot wasn’t really stressful.

I dislike hypocrites and people who are unappreciative.

7. How do you spend your free time? Drawing or painting, swimming, video games and trying to motivate people.

8. The SKY Nation loves you! Any words of encouragement? I am new to it but glad to be a part of this awesome generation! Y’all are beautiful just the way you are.

Our SKY Generation TakeOver Party was bad bad bad. Our favourite highlights were the flashmob , the Unstoppable song performance by Cina Soul and Naa Shawele, spinning the wheel of fortune, selfies with Adina, Adina’s performance and so many more, literally the whole party was a jam. If you missed it, then yawa for you o. But you can catch up with a few pictures here. If you were there and your picture is featured here with you wearing a wristband, hit us up on +233540124008 for a surprise package!

1 Whoop whoop!! It’s a new school year, a perfect time to start afresh and make new academic goals. We gotta blow our exams! Yea yea, it’s necessary for you to be excited about the new academic year – maybe you’re moving to a new school, or going to a senior class. We are here to inform you that you’re in for a whole new experience of both good and ugly.

2

And let’s face it, school is no smooth road and there will be ups and downs, and and they will only make you stronger. How you embrace the challenges is what makes the difference and makes you a champion the entire school year.

Strong-headed seniors If you’re going to a new school, you’re bound to meet new people and oh seniors. Especially if you’re in Senior High School. There will be kind ones and mean ones. You don’t want to come across to them as weak, because that’s when they feel like you can be controlled. Neither do you want to come across as proud and pompous because they will make it their sole aim to humble you in the school through constant embarrassment. Our advice: Keep your cool and be confident

Long fingers The stories we hear of missing underwears on the dry line and breaking in of chop boxes are so true. Unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do about it more especially when you don’t have proof. Be alert and don’t fuss over your loss too much. Our advice: Keep your eyes wide and have your belongings under lock and key.

Show offs They are in every school, they think they’re the best at everything and feel like they are above the school rules. Chill sis, it’s all for the glam. Our advice: Just be yourself and don’t be intimidated by it all.

4 5

Stress Well, we can’t dodge this bullet, you have to brace yourself to be studying and finishing assignments all night along with other school duties and activities. And oh, if you promised yourself never to wait to hand in your homework the morning of submission, then you’re on top of your game because the temptation is going to be legit high. Our advice: Manage stress by planning your day and time well so things don’t catch you unawares, and refuse to give in to the temptation of procrastinating.

Funny teachers This is one of the most memorable parts about schools. From teachers who seem to be teaching outside of the syllabus, to those with funny expressions, to those to gbaa all the time, to those who have their class pets, to those who are just sharks chale. What would school be like without our teachers? Our advice: Take note of the subjects you really love, and not just because of the teacher. When it comes to your future career, loving what you do is the easiest way to make sure you slay!

Hello Drey

That’s smart girl cos you’re going to be making waves in the design industry someday, just trust the process hunnay. It’s always easier excelling at things you’re already passionate about. I know you’re taking your studies seriously. Keep it up baby girl, you’re going to inspire a whole bunch of girls and guys as well. School seems fun and you’re going to make a lot of friends for life like Nadia and Tasha. Focus on your studies and you just gotta stay away from that toxic squad - you know the one I’m talking about ;) You also got great teachers who will also push you to be your best self. Make extra effort to pay attention to the subjects you find difficult. I know Maths ain’t your best friend but Chale more effort and you will get it. Don’t stop making those cute and funny cards for your friends. You’ll be surprised at the outcome of those sweet witty nothings. You know the story writing you keep doing, don’t stop! It’s gonna put you on international TV talking about a book you will write. Being funny is such a plus! The journey might not always be smooth but work hard now because your preemptive spirit and perseverance will make you excel in your career in future. You will be surprised by the recognition you will get all over the world. Baby girl, you are a STAR! Bring that AWE-SOMENESS, the world is waiting. You got this.

Love, Audrey

I am super skinny and my friends assume that I don’t eat well. But I actually eat very well, it’s just sad that people keep making fun of me.

I don’t know if it’s just me but my parents don’t allow me to go out. Every time I make an attempt to step out they tell me to go and learn. But I am excelling at school too. I just don’t understand them

It’s an issue that so many SKY Girls can relate to. What about finding a balance with your parents by spending some of your free time learning a new skill? You could take some art classes, learn an instrument, or take up a sport? T hat way you won’t feel like you’re stuck at home with your books all the time. It can be so painful when you’re bounced but think of all the embarrassing times you escaped at some hang outs just because you were not there, like losing your money because of large crowds.

I am really nervous about boarding school. I have heard so many stories of bullying and difficult seniors so when I think of going to be a first-year student in SHS this month, I get really nervous. What should I do?

It’s irritating when people make assumptions and don’t bother to you know better. T hat’s just plain wrong so we feel your pain Sis.

Feel comfortable in your skin. People come in different shapes and sizes and that’s what make us all unique! You’re perfect just the way you are. What matters is you’re treating your body right and staying healthy.

Relax sis, that’s like only 2% of what actually happens in SHS. Senior high school is fun and full of adventure. T hink of all the great friends you can make, the clubs you can join and interco. Sha, don’t let those negative stories scare you. Not everybody has such bad stories from SHS. How you carry yourself also matters. Just be confident and be bold about your decisions to say no to yawa things

Shed that anxiety off sis. It might turn out to even be your most memorable school moments ever. High school is fun with so many activities and there will be no time to think about these things when you get there. Even if you go through tough times, you will come out stronger have a more interesting story to tell

MYolder sister and I are complete opposites. She is shy while I am outgoing. She enjoys science and maths while I enjoy writing and creativity. I follow my sister and literally copy everything she does, but I feel like I am losing myself. I want to be perfect like her.

It’s natural and okay to look up to your older sister but when you realize that you have different interests, you don’t have to change yours to fit in hers. Just be yourself because you’re unique

I feel you sis. We all go through it too, but lowkey they just want the best for us.

You can copy a few things from her that are cool but embrace who you are and just live your life to the fullest

You’re one of a kind and there’s no way you can be exactly like your sister. Just learn to be the best version of yourself.

We all have dreams and a picture of the career we want to pursue when growing up. But the truth is, there’s probably two groups of us – those who know right from the get go what they wanna do. So if they want to become big chefs, so are probably studying catering in home economics. Then there’s also those of us who are still trying to figure it all out. Regardless of what group you fall into, It will be great to tap into the things you like doing when you’re trying to figure out what career path to pursue. Rather than forcing yourself to become something you are not, just be your natural self. And this means your interests might change over time, and that’s okay! Today, there are an endless number of career options that didn’t exist before a nail technician, a blogger, a hair stylist, a photographer etc. You can be anything you want and it doesn’t always have to be the usual. The most important thing is to follow something that you are interested in and makes you happy. So don’t be so rigid in making a choice. Focus on your studies and just make the grades because you can always make the switch when you’re ready to. Did you know the editor of your fave SKY magazine is actually a trained biomedical engineer? But she loved writing, too! So she’s mixing it up! Plus, it’s okay if your parents seem skeptical about your dreams. More often than not that happens when it appears you’re losing focus of your education. But the importance of school in building a successful career cannot even be over emphasized.

When you do well in school, bigger opportunities are open to you. If you ever finally settle on the career path to pursue, decide to be the best at it and set new standards. In the meantime, don’t freak out yet if you’re clueless about what to do in future. You got this!
