Girl power is the ability to change situations positively no matter how much negativity is around you.

Rejoice, 16

You have the authority to do your thing.

Lordina, 15

I think it means working hard at what you can do best and love despite what you hear others say as well as being yourself. Girl power is an endorsement of what females can also do which others might think is out of their capacities.

The rights, confidence and strength a girl has.

Rabby, 15

Kirsty, 16

Theresa, 14

I think Girl power is about girls doing amazing things, but it’s especially about being there for one another and having each other’s backs.

Maabena, 13

Power to you Girl! Girl power to us, is all about believing in yourself, having the confidence to do your thing and following your passions no matter what negative things people say. But that’s just one way to look at it. Check out what other SKY Girls say “Girl Power” means to them. What does “Girl Power” mean to you? Share with us on our WhatsApp number, +233540124008

Caila, 14

Girl power means the ability to stand up for what you deserve and make sure that others benefit from the actions you take in the world.

Qanita, 14

It means having confidence in yourself and not being afraid to stand up for not only yourself but for others. Girl power requires a level of self-love and confidence. đ&#x;˜Žđ&#x;’– The ability of a girl to be bold, proud and firm in all aspects of life. For a girl to be strong and determined in herself. For a girl to believe she is everything she wishes to be and more.

Nana Akua, 13

Girl power encourages woman empowerment, confidence and strength.

Judith, 15

It’s how to be confident and make your own decisions.

Yvette, 14

Having self-confidence.

One of the highlights for us last year was the SKY Do Your Thing Competition. We came across amazing and mind-blowing talents. Dance ah dance, singing ah singing. (Check edition 7 for full details) This year, we didn’t want to leave our junior high schoolers behind. The competition was dubbed Do Your Thing- Art Unleashed. Our theme was Girl Power which allowed SKY Girls to express what this meant to them through art. Charle, when we say SKY Girls are creative, believe us! Beautiful pieces of beadmaking, painting, colouring, paperwork, fashion design and some other extraordinary creative arts.

The competition was pretty tough at the beginning and it was almost impossible to predict the school that was going to win. However, St. Martin de Porres School, Ashridge International School, Gold Avenue School, Air Forces Basic School and Alsyd Academy made it to finals. The finale was fun packed. There were different game competitions for the schools present, a performance by the DWP Academy, a live graffiti and a live performance by the finalists. The winner was announced creatively her picture was painted for the audience to determine by themselves who the winner is. The ultimate winner was Angel from Gold Avenue school, followed by Kiki from Alsyd Academy and the third winner was Sawsan from Ashridge School. See for yourself all the beautiful art pieces they did.

sAWSAN My work is inspired by women who have achieved so much in life. My work shows a girl who is an overcomer no matter the challenges she meets. That’s what girl power is all about to me. I’d love to pursue art as a career.

ANGEL

KIKI

My mum and friends inspire my work. Girl power means doing your thing and that’s what I did – bead making. I’d like to pursue this as a career. I’ve already started.

My friends are the inspiration behind my work. To demonstrate what girl power means to me, I drew a girl with her fists clenched to say, ‘‘she’s got this!’’ Drawing is my talent so it is not going away. In future, I’d like to pursue it alongside another profession.

We hear boys saying “bro code” all the time. Ppssssttt, like whatever, we also got our girl code. Girl code means supporting each other and having a sister’s back. Now I know you’re saying, “what is the bro code though?” Hahaha! It’s the same sis.

Nothing beats some quality girl time – uplifting one another as well as enjoying each other’s company. Most of the time, it’s all in the little things that we say and how we say it. Here are a few suggestions for you to try next time.

When they wear an outfit. Don’t say “I like the dress, but you look so fat in it, you are not pulling off the look.’’ How about “I like the dress. You look good in it and you can rock any dress you like!”

When they fall. Don’t laugh and say “Why are you so clumsy?” How about “Sorry, try to be careful. I don’t want you getting hurt.”

When they win a competition. Don’t say “I would have been first too if I had participated.” How about “Congratulations girl, you did me proud.” When they get it wrong. Don’t say “Are you that dumb? it’s easy.” How about “Keep trying, you will get it right.”

When they tell you about their crush. Don’t say “What do you even see in each other.” How about “You’re dope whether he likes you back or not.”

When they are sad over a problem. Don’t say “Get over it already.” How about “You will pull through. I’m here for you.”

When they want to make an attempt. Don’t say “You can’t do this.” How about “You go girl, you can do this.”

When they sing. Don’t say “Your voice belongs only in the bathroom you wouldn’t stand a chance in a singing competition.’’ How about “Just have fun with it. That’s the most important thing.”

When they are eating junk food. Don’t say “You know you are fat and look at what you are eating.’’ How about “Try and eat right so you stay healthy.” Don’t be the one to break the girl code. Keep it locked! Written by

Nana Aba Anamoah Nana Aba is a formidable TV presenter and journalist. She’s also very passionate about training the next generation of media personalities. The one thing we adore about her is her love for the English language and her desire to help others improve how they speak and write. IG-@thenanaaba

Elom Ayayee Elom is a photographer. She is super creative and has changed the face of maternity and family photography in Ghana. Her photography will make you go “aww” and she beautifully captures milestones of people’s lives. IG- @elomayayeepro

Zenobia Bou-Chedid Zenobia is an advocate of healthy living and is the CEO of Zeno’s Yoghurt Bar. Her mission is to nourish people by offering healthy, yummy snacks. Her love for yoghurt pushed her to pursue this career after her parents initially gave up on it. IG-@zenosyoghurt

Shirley Frimpong Manso Shirley has been breaking barriers in the movie production industry in Ghana and beyond for years. FEMALE BESTIE Would you rather have a male bestie or a female bestie? Having a male best friend or a female best friend is so fun, simply because BFFs are always in your corner and they are forever.

Only a girl gets it. The way us girls are set up, we have so many common interests that stick us together like glue. Whether it’s fun stuff like window- shopping and getting a manicure, or even not so exciting things like period wahala. No one can relate better than a girl would! We know just the right thing to say to comfort you because we share similar experiences.

People have different reasons for choosing who they want their bestie should be. Whatever your choice is, have a bestie that encourages you to be yourself and cheers you on in life.

Fashion police. Your fashion sense will always be top-notch because your girl bestie will be there to ensure it and hype you. She will get the picture angles right too. You can even pair clothes from each other’s wardrobes to give you a chic outfit and trade tips that will keep you girls glowing.

Here are a few perks of having either a male bestie or a female bestie.

Anything, Everything Having a female bestie means you can talk about anything and everything. Boys sometimes have different interests that may not even be our thing. However, you can talk about all the random stuff with your girlfriend and have long conversations that literally take you into another zone.

MALE BESTIE

#WeMove Guys are quick to let things pass and move to the next thing. They don’t dwell too much on stuff and because of that they encourage you to do same. You can’t be down for too long when you’re hanging with your boys boys. it’s always exciting. They’ve got jokes for days and hardly take things personally. It’s all fun and games. Straightforward They just can’t say things other than the way it is. Even though it sucks sometimes when they hit you with the harsh truth, you’ll appreciate it much later. He may not be an expert when it comes to girl fashion, but he will be frank when you’re not rocking the look. They keep it real. Your male bestie can easily point out when that guy who has been hitting on you is up to no good or he is for real. Most of the time, you can trust his advice on relationships because it’s from a guy’s perspective. He will stand up for you when you’re in trouble and will always have your back.

AEROGRAM COMPETITION WINNER Lilian

If writing is your thing, then we hope you didn’t miss the Aerogram competition in the previous edition of the SKY magazine. SKY Girls were challenged to write a short story idea for Sugar Spice N Sauce 3 with Naa Shawele as the main character. Our jury then read and reviewed all of the 2000 entries received. There were plenty stories shared by different SKY Girls that would have made an amazing movie. However, Lilian from Achimota Senior High School came up tops. Turn to page 26 to see a comic strip based on her story.

We travelled across the world to gather glow up tips just for YOU! You need them sis. Pick up a few

I am a better person when I am moisturized.

But first, skincare..

The real glow up is when you stop waiting to be someone perfect and consciously enjoy who you are in the present.

A glo-getter is an ambitious person who strives to achieve her goals while maintaining a healthy glow inside out.

A glowing girl can help other people glow and still be lit.

Comparison is simply a distraction from your glow up.

Don’t compromise on your personal hygiene..

Glow up is building your self confidence

These days, wherever you go, us teens come through dripping! Everyone is simply lit with the latest trends. No dulling kraa. However, if you’ve been on social media lately (which we all have been, because we literally sleep there. lol), you must have seen a splash of African print drip on your timeline. It’s Ankara FTW (for the win). Here are a few Ankara Styles to help you look très chic. You could even twin with your bestie! Which one is your favourite?

Choosing the perfect selfie to post on your social media can be such a difficult task. Apart from the fact that almost all the pictures look good and you’re spoilt for choice, you want the final selfie you post to be a true expression of your personality and to show the world that you’re a girl going places! That is why after going through the ton of pictures with your friend and you guys choose which one to post, sometimes you’re still not sure. You know what I’m saying… But the real wahala to deal with is finding the perfect caption for the picture you want to post. The caption must match the mood of the picture, you barb? You want to show off your confident self and that girl power runs

through your veins. So, here’s a list of dope caption suggestions for your next social media post to let the world know you’ve got big dreams! We love to see your posts. Tag us Chale.

• Me doing me • Too lit to quit • Veni, vidi, vici (“I came, I saw, I conquered” in Latin) • We roll like gari and shito • I may not be there yet, but I’m closer than I was yesterday • “Act natural” they said. Me: • I wouldn’t chase you because I’m the catch • I’m an original and that’s perfection in itself • Good food, good mood • Be the extra in extraordinary • Don’t study me, you won’t graduate.

‘‘Red sea’’, ‘‘osomo’’, ‘‘fallo period’’, ‘‘auntie araba is in town’’, ‘‘asem is rocking me’’, ‘‘auntie flow’’. If only having your period was as much fun as the nicknames we gave them. A lot of things make us different as girls, but the one thing that we OWN is our period, periodtt! Even though it’s red, it can make us feel blue when it comes. Periods are pretty much hectic most of the time. But we do this every month so who are the real superhumans here? So, when the going gets red, we also get reddyready. Check out a few tips to help you feel your best when on your period.

1

EXERCISE

I know. That’s the last thing you probably want to do during your period but somehow, exercising makes you feel good. Low sweat sessions like taking a walk, jogging around the neighbourhood and skipping helps to reduce that tired, sluggish feeling and boosts your mood.

2

EAT HEALTHY

It’s safe to say periods are visitors with no manners. It’s kind of weird but you have some of the most absurd cravings during your period - chocolate, doughnuts, cake, etc. No sis! Maintain your normal diet and eat healthy. It’s okay to give in a little bit but don’t let your period be an excuse to eat poorly. It will only make you feel worse, sap your energy and leave you feeling bloated.

3

WATER

Drink as much water as possible. When you’re dehydrated, you feel sluggish and lose concentration. Have a bottle of water in hand during the red moment and stay water-full.

Written by

4

DO YOU

Enjoy the things you love to do. Hangout with friends, listen to music that gasses you up or read a book. It boosts your mood and keeps you going. Next time the period month hits, don’t freak out. You got this!

1. *screaming* We can’t keep calm knowing we are in the same space with you. Whaddup DJ Vyrusky? Can you tell us all about yourself? Family, education, your achievements? (laughs) My real name is Kofi Amoako. I love jollof. I love Manchester United and I love playing the instruments - bass guitar, keyboard and drums. I attended St. Thomas Aquinas then I furthered my studies at University of Ghana. There, I met this guy who introduced me to the software “Virtual DJ”. He taught me how to mix songs. Gradually, I became one of the popular drink-up DJs on Legon campus. After school, I joined Lynx entertainment and I told them I could also play music. One day, I was given the opportunity to play and everyone was amazed. It’s been one hit after the other since then. I started DJing proper in 2013 and since then I have gathered over 25 awards. I have won the DJ of the year award back to back. I am also the first Ghanaian DJ to have a million views on all of my YouTube videos. 2. Who is the most inspirational woman in your life? Can I mention 3? The first person is my mum. She is so strong and an inspiration. I feel like anything is possible when I look at her. Another person that really inspires me is Oprah. I read her books and how she far she’s come, she is the definition of unstoppable. When I also look at Anita Erskine, I realize that this woman has gone through all the phases in life to become who she is and she’s so full of positivity.

DJ/SKY GUY 3. What would you consider yourself to be? An introvert or an extrovert? And why? I like staying indoors but I’m so not an introvert. I don’t like to be by myself. I like to have fun and people also like to have me around because I make them laugh. 4. What are the things you enjoy doing (apart from music, of course)? I love playing FIFA video games. I am a basketball guy and I like cooking too, sometimes. 5. If you could change one thing in the world what would it be? HATRED! I don’t get it why people hate. I preach love every time. We need to stay together as one. 6. What keeps you going? The grace of God. My love for music and my family. I come from a family where everybody is successful, so I’m motivated to make it too. And yeah, music once again. I just want to spread the virus lol. 7. Would you rather learn how to dance or learn how to ride a motor bike? I was a good dancer when I was in SHS. I can still pull a few moves. But I’d never ride a bike. 8. You have people looking up to you but who inspires you and what inspires your music? Calvin Harris, DJ Khaled and in Ghana DJ Black. I grew up listening to DJ Black. I used to listen to him every Saturday. Last but not least, DJ Master Jay. I learnt everything I know from him. I also look up to Bola Ray. I don’t just play music; I add the business side of playing music too and he’s a great business icon. 9. If you had a minute, with a fan, what would you tell them? P.S we are that fan. See eh, there’s a God who loves you. Just trust Him. Also, you can do anything that you put your mind to. When stuff goes wrong, don’t focus on it. It’s already happened. Just move on. Maybe the reason I’m good at what I do is when I go on stage to play music, I don’t imagine that I can’t move the crowd. Lastly, don’t sleep on your idea. Whatever you want to do start now not tomorrow.Don’t let anybody stop you.

They say that there is a thin line between love and hate but what did I know about love? All I knew was that I hated Ekow with every fibre of my being. Aarrgghhh. Just the sight of him put me off. He carried this air of arrogance around him and I worked my jaw in annoyance each time girls at school swooned at his handsomeness. Well, at least, I never saw it. I couldn’t call him my friend because we never really spoke and I always avoided instances when we had to be together alone. Even when we were among friends, things were awkward between us. When it was the time of election for new prefects. I found out he was also contesting. “Mmttcheww, like this boy kraa, why was he following me?” I thought. I went from class to class to campaign with my friends. We designed posters and pasted at every classroom door. Guys, will you believe wherever my campaign poster was, his was right beside? Ah! It was like we were campaigning together. On election day, when my name was announced as the Girls’ prefect my joy knew no bounds. Then the Boys’ prefect was announced.

It was Ekow. Like how? How am I supposed to work with this boy who is so full of himself? I decided it was going to be strictly business between us. The time came when we always had to talk to each other more than once in a day. We had to work together on everything. When It came to decision making, I’d intentionally refuse to accept some of his ideas just for ‘‘shege’’ reasons. I felt he did same sometimes, but I was up for the game. As we worked together week after week, I realized Ekow was a great person. He was very understanding and always wanted the best for people. He was also very hardworking. He never took his duties lightly. He was humble too. Gradually, I began to see why people admired him. He had the looks, he was focused, and he was hardworking. I had a huge crush but I hid it very well. Oh, did I tell you that, we were both athletes too? Once, during the school sports competition, I was running for my class when I fell. I had gotten a muscle pull in both thighs.

I screamed out in pain. All I heard was everyone screaming “Ow ow ow”. I don’t know why but I thought something bad was going to happen to me or I’d not be able to walk again. The pain was so unbearable. Amidst the noise, guess who rushed to me first? It was Ekow. He carried me to the sick bay and looked so worried. I knew then I had to tell him how I felt. I needed to let him know that I liked him. At the sick bay, he took a folded paper out of his pocket and put it in my hand and told me to open it only after he had left. As he was leaving, I held his hand and told him “I like you Ekow. I like you so much” He just smiled and walked away. Whhaattt! Ekow didn’t like me back? He didn’t say he liked me back? In fact, he didn’t say anything. I was so sad and a little mad at myself for telling him how I felt. I almost threw the paper away, but I just decided to open it and Oh my God! “I just had to tell you today Esther, I can’t keep it any longer. Each day, I see you, I only like you more. I feel so lucky to be your friend. Can we be best friends?” Your crush, Ekow. Y’all don’t know how I felt. If there was anything above cloud nine, I was there. Ekow liked me this whole time and we decided to tell each other on the same day! Eventuarrry, I had told Ekow. I was happy, I couldn’t even feel the pain anymore.

Letter to my YR OLD

Self

Yo Maafia! Take a seat, come closer let me tell you something. You’re sixteen. As a young lady, you feel like there are a lot of expectations and assume that grown-ups know everything and have it all figured out. News flash...they don’t!!!! Sometimes, you’ll make mistakes. The great thing is, you’ll live and you’ll learn. So, go on and explore, travel, be eager to embrace different cultures, learn a new word every day, be active in extra curriculum activities. These, combined with the good moral values, are the foundations of really growing up and maturing. You’re at that age where you seem to be getting a lot of attention from boys. On the other hand, you also feel like some people just don’t like you even though they don’t know you. This makes you want to please people even if it hurts you. Stop it!! You don’t owe it to anyone to change how they feel about you. Be yourself. Once it makes you happy, once it helps others, once it brings honour to your family, do it. Be confident in your decisions and express your opinions freely. Someday, you will find yourself excelling in a male-dominated field. Don’t compare yourself to your friends. Your only competition is you. Strive to be better than you were yesterday. Be nice to everyone. Share what you have with the less privileged. Be free to live your best life but whiles at it develop a good savings habit. I know it feels good to be able to buy a pack of Papaye for yourself and your friends but it’s a better feeling knowing you could save and one day afford to buy the entire company. I am excited about your future because I am absolutely confident in your capabilities and proud of you. If you ever you feel lost, say a prayer and always remember you have the biggest fan in you. With love,

Nana Afua Serwaa Adusei

Automotive Technician / Founder of Shecanic Academy / SKY Sister

Exams are necessary evils. We can’t avoid them if we want growth. We take tests to move to the next level. Everyone, no matter their level has an experience to share about examination. So, we asked SKY Girls to share funny exam experiences which in twitter language is “Sco pa tu manaa (exams)”. Check out their responses. A friend of mine studied apor for the WASSCE oral English exam and instead of him to listen to the tape, he simply shaded the answers to what he had studied without even checking the questions and then slept off. Guess what? They had changed everything! – Mharmcy When you try skipping question 1 for 2 and question 2 says “based on your answer in question 1 what is ……” You’re dead. – Dora Aidoo

When you’re the academic prefect and you can’t even ask for help because all eyes are on you. Who kraa sent me to collect post? – Victorine

When you sit in front of the paper and you forget everything you have learnt. Like how? – Maame Esi When you open the exam booklet and what the teacher said wouldn’t come is what is in there. The teacher lied. Note to self: Never trust a teacher who says “this one won’t come.”– Patience

When you don’t understand the question and the teacher later comes to say there’s something wrong with the question, but you still can’t answer it when they correct it. – Precious

I was the shark in my class. Everyone thought my answers was right. They copied. We all failed. – Kaitlin

During a math objective paper when the answer you calculated is not part of the possible answers. – Mariam Sleeping behind the paper in the exam room because you stayed up all night to study. - Elizabeth The paper was an hour and 30 minutes, I finished answering all the question in 30 mins, people were still writing. - Lily
