KILKENNY EXPOSED

WILD CATS

It’s back! The controversial show that made millionaires of three libel lawyers, brought down a government, and was described by one citizen as having “done the same to Kilkenny as Cromwell, except worse”. Three out of town comedians, with subscriptions to the Kilkenny People, Facebook and Twitter accounts, and a bookmark on KCLR 96FM’s live stream, take a judgmental, condescending, and downright hilarious look at the life and times of the good people of Kilkenny city and county. Local ads, court reports, immodest business claims, and political jiggerypokery all feature in this portrait of Kilkenny that might be best left in the attic. Featuring Dom Irrera, Barry Murphy, Colm O’ Regan, Rich Hall and special guests.

Established as a supper house and tavern in the 16th century, the Hole in the Wall boasted among its patrons such reprobates as the Earl of Ormonde, Henry Grattan, and the future Duke of Wellington. The wonderfully atmospheric venue now hosts another breed of ne’er-do-well for The Sky Cat Laughs festival, with a programme of carefully picked wildcats of the Irish comedy scene: one, some, or all of whom are destined for very big things in the future. INTERNATIONAL ALL STAR IMPROV

SEAS SUAS LE KEVIN MCALEER

We’ve merged the talents of the best improvisers from the Dublin Comedy Improv with those of some of the stars of Whose Line is It Anyway to create a comedy improv monster of epic proportions. Brilliantly funny and ingeniously crafted comedy games and songs from Ian Coppinger, Steve Frost, Steve Steen, Andy Smart, Tara Flynn, Paul Tylak, Michelle Read, Brendan Dempsey, Kevin Gildea, Joe Rooney, Dermot Whelan, and more.

Kevin McAleer has been threatening to learn Irish properly for forty years, and here he takes a giant leap forward in the dark with the translation of his classic ‘Chalk & Cheese’ show. Widely regarded (by himself) as his best ever work, this everyday tale of madness, paranoia and obsessive word play is hilarious nonsense in any language. But will McAleer be able to find enough bad puns in Irish to go round? And will he be able to learn it all off in time? Bigí linn

SIMON MUNNERY’S LA CONCEPTA

MITCH HEDBERG TRIBUTE SHOW

Simon Munnery’s exclusive non-dining restaurant opens in The Hole in the Wall – for a limited time only. La Concepta offers eight non-diners (at a time) all the rigmarole of haute cuisine without the shame of eating. Instead, presenting a varied three-course menu of conceptual dishes comprising plates of art, jokes, props, aphorisms, audio installations, and choreographed dance.

One of the most gifted comedy talents of our times, Mitch was taken from us in 2004 and far too soon. Dom Irrera talks to his wife Lynn Shawcroft about him and their life on the road (including a legendary trip to Kilkenny in 1999), followed by a performance of some of the great Mitch Hedberg gags by some of the festival’s top comedians.

UNCLE DOM’S FIRESIDE CHATS

COLM O’REGAN’S CERTIFIED

Avuncular festival veteran, Dom Irrera presents a series of podcasted Fireside Chats in the Hole in the Wall, with some of the fascinating artists performing at the festival.

You know it well, it’s the one where you’re in your pyjamas, your pen has turned into a banana, the invigilator is Alf Stewart and the whole exam is taking place in McCoys in Fair City. You can only be dreaming about one thing: The Leaving Cert.

Sat 2pm Hole in the Wall 60 mins €15 Sun 2pm Hole in the Wall 60 mins €15

In 2011 he told the recession through Facebook, in 2012 he created @irishmammies - this year Colm O’Regan finally knuckles down to study the uniquely Irish rite of passage: The Leaving This is a one-off show and is unlikely to be repeated (unless it doesn’t get the points for Science in Maynooth)

403 SECOND MASTERWORKS

Comedian David O’Doherty’s Edinburgh festival hit comes to Kilkenny with a selection of 12 speakers presenting 403 second (c. 5 minute) slide shows that veer from the sublime to the ridiculous. Previous topics have included Al Murray on the history of the V sign, and DOD himself on shark facts.

SANDERSON JONES’ COMEDY SALE

SIMON MUNNERYS FYLM MAKKER

The world’s only 100% hand sold comedy show, Sanderson Jones personally sells all the tickets to his shows either on the street or via social media and gets to know each and every member of his audience who then form the basis for the show. A truly unique, fascinating and hilariously funny hour of comedy ensues. Sanderson comes to Kilkenny with multiple 5-star reviews from the Edinburgh festival.

Experimenting with a tiny camera and big screen, Simon Munnery is Fylm-Makker. Presenting a beautiful mix of visual sketches, handcrafted animation, music and stand-up, all created and performed live on screen. This is “one of the most consistently original and imaginative minds in comedy” (The Guardian) at his most rewarding, enthralling and avant-garde best.

ABANDOMAN AND THE HAIRY BOWSIES

Dom Irrera, Mike Wilmot, Karl Spain and Eric Lalor Late night, rude and wild - four of the festival’s most uncompromising comedians let loose. Not for the faint of heart. Includes entry to Langton’s Club.

A musical phenomenon, Abandoman create ingenious hip hop and rap at lightning speed live in front of the audience – no two shows are ever the same. “Flight of the Conchords meets 8 Mile...nothing short of genius.” (Chortle). With support from Paul Woodfull and Joe Rooney aka The Hairy Bowsies - everyone’s favourite politically-incorrect republican baladeers.

THE FOOTBALL MATCH

Every year since 1995, in the hallowed grounds of Kilkenny City’s Fairgreen (except one year when it was in the Waterbarrack and Ross Noble fell into the River Breagagh), an audience of several people has come to marvel at the spectacle of approximately 22 comedians and special guests making a mockery of the beautiful game - or taking it way too seriously - on a Sunday afternoon. With live PA commentary by Karl Spain, most likely.

CAMEMBERT QUARTET

THE CATS’ BANK HOLIDAY BRUNCH

Paddy Cullivan and The Camembert Quartet are celebrating their tenth year as one of Ireland’s most unique acts. Led by Paddy Cullivan (2013 UK Musical Comedy Awards Semi-Finalist), this six-piece powerhouse are widely known as the House band on the Late Late Show. That, however, is their day job - their two albums ‘Music Is War’ and ‘Sell Out’ contain hilariously original classics such as ‘Anarchy in the E.I.R.E’, ‘Boyband’s are C**ts’, ‘We Came To Rock’ and ‘Battaburger’. They look forward to bringing their musically sublime and surreal, Zappa-like sensibility to the Cat Laughs for the first time.

Gasp in amazement as Barry Murphy, Paddy Cullivan and special guests defy human biology and present an entertaining show at 2pm in the afternoon of a bank holiday Monday. Expect a slightly alternative newspaper review, a post-match analysis of the weekend and indeed the Ireland vs The Rest of the World match and some light, soothing music
