20 YEARS OF LAUGHTER Day One 2001, Tynan’s Bar, Kilkenny. American comedian, Todd Barry: “How many TV people will be there?” “Is there an industry pass?” “Will there be reviewers?” “What kind of bookers attend?” “How do I get to the venue?” Day Three 2001, Langton’s Bar, Kilkenny: American comedian, Todd Barry: “Um, can I get some more beer vouchers?” Kilkenny strikes. I think that the festival has thrived largely due to the consistent simplicity of approach: focus on the shows and at the same time, take as much pressure off the comedians as possible. No awards, no gig-filming; no show reviews; just them and the audience. The only pressure that remains is peer pressure and that’s the best kind. The quality of many other live events can be exaggerated and justified on the grounds that they appeal to a whole range of emotions. In comedy you can’t do that: if the audience isn’t laughing, then the show isn’t working. Of course laughter isn’t an emotion, it is a reaction. We are the only animal that laughs. And when you look at the difference between a one-actor show and a typical stand-up show, it is that big bubble of liveness that exists between the audience and the performer. Anything can happen. I love that.

2

Kyteler’s Inn, 1998. Phil Kay swings off the chin of an old alabaster lion prominently positioned in the venue. It comes off in his hand and both tumble to the floor. Phil removes the insole of his runner and asks if anyone has any glue. Big ask. The venue manager, stationed by the door, has a tube of Super Glue. Really. He hands it Phil, who fixes the insole to the mouth of the broken lion to resemble a lolling tongue. I didn’t know it was possible for an audience to laugh that hard. It’s year twenty, but to the audience coming to shows on June Bank Holiday weekend, they couldn’t care less about the year. They only want to laugh. Judging by the line-up of improvisers and stand-ups on this year’s bill, there should be plenty of opportunity to do just that. Here’s to another year of memories and thank you Kilkenny for being the best backdrop you could ever want.

Richard Cook Festival co-founder and chairman of the Sky Cat Laughs Comedy Festival board.

ABOUT

WELCOME Having worked on so many of them over the years, it is our great honour and pleasure to present the programme for the 20th Sky Cat Laughs Comedy Festival. It is a tribute to the clear vision and dogged determination of its founders that it has not only survived but grown to be one of the world’s best loved comedy festivals – one which has played a role in the careers of some of the biggest stars in the business. This year sees the return of some old friends from overseas, including George Wendt (Norm from the much-loved TV series Cheers) who hosted the very first festival in 1995. Sport comedy trio Apres Match are back with a reunion show on the stage where they first performed live back in 2000. Des Bishop is back from China where he’s been for the last year and he’ll be doing a show with his friend Dashan in Chinese. Sky is also back - not only as a sponsor, but also as a producer of top quality comedy programmes. We’ve got the premiere of Charlie Brooker’s spoof police procedural A Touch of Cloth 3, Baz Ashmawy’s hilarious travelogue 50 Ways to Kill Your Mammy and Rebecca Front’s brilliant Psychobitches presented as a live show with comedians from the programme. Our family friendly programme based around the Kitten Club kids’ shows in medieval Rothe House is enhanced by an historical, nay hysterical, tour which will take to the streets of Kilkenny’s wonderful Medieval Mile led by suspect historian Karl Spain.

Sky, Ireland’s leading home entertainment company, is delighted to be partnering with The Sky Cat Laughs Comedy Festival for a second year, bringing some of its original content to an audience of dedicated comedy lovers, including the premiere of Baz Ashmawy’s forthcoming Sky 1 HD series 50 Ways to Kill Your Mammy. Comedy is central to Sky’s content investment with shows such as Chris O’Dowd and Nick Vincent-Murphy’s Moone Boy, a hilarious look at small town Ireland through the eyes of a 13 year old; Charlie Brooker’s parody cop show A Touch of Cloth; and a sideways look at historical female figures in Psychobitches. Alongside its commitment to offering customers a greater choice of high-quality content, Sky is a leading innovator. Sky+ gives you total control of how you watch the TV you love, including access to Ireland’s biggest Catch Up TV service, the ability to pause, rewind or record an entire series and the option when out and about to record your favourite shows using the Sky+ App so they are ready to watch when you get home. With Sky Go, you can watch live and on demand, the widest range of channels on your mobile, tablet or laptop. In Ireland, Sky employs over 900 people and is increasingly engaged in grass roots activities nationwide including Sky Arts Ignition, the Sky Academy TV and Sports Scholarships bursary scheme, and the Sky Sports Living for Sport Programme. Sky 1 HD is proud to present the world premiere of 50 Ways to Kill Your Mammy in the company of its stars, Nancy and Baz Ashmawy (How Low Can You Go). This innovative comedy travel series, for launch on the channel later this year, sees a mammy embarking on a trip of a lifetime with her thrill seeking son as they take in a series of extraordinary adventures. Nancy is a 70 year old pensioner and for the last ten years has watched Baz gallivanting around the world, throwing himself into all manner of extreme situations. Until now Nancy’s been the proud and occasionally worried mother on the side lines but just recently she’s got the itch, an insatiable urge to grab life by the horns and try a few new experiences on for size. Baz knows exactly where Nancy’s limits are and has planned trips across the globe that will gently take Nancy to those limits, slowly inching her past them each week, as far as she can go. From sky diving to alligator wrangling, this is a unique and endearing adventure, for one brave mammy and her daredevil only son. Followed by Q&A

Known to millions all over the world as Norm from the TV series Cheers, we’re very excited to welcome back to Kilkenny the host of the very first Cat Laughs in 1995: Mr. George Wendt! Joining George are fellow Second City Chicago alumni Joel Murray, Bernadette Birkett, Katie Rich and Michael McCarthy, all of whom are gifted exponents of the art of improv. We’ve merged their talents with the best improvisers from the Dublin Comedy Improv and the stars of Whose Line is it Anyway to create a comedy improv monster of epic proportions. Brilliantly funny and ingeniously crafted comedy games and songs from Ian Coppinger, Dermot Carmody, Dermot Whelan, Kevin Gildea, Joe Rooney, Michelle Read, Brendan Dempsey, Paul Tylak, Tara Flynn and the lads from across the water: Steve Frost, Steve Steen, Andy Smart and many more.

Hosted by actor and director, Simon Delaney and open to residents of the Republic of Ireland, members of the public are given the opportunity to pitch comedy entertainment ideas which they think should be on television. At the end of each pitch, three comedians; Jason Byrne, Aisling Bea and Andrew Maxwell will put them through their paces with a question and answer section – but it is the audience who will decide which pitch they think deserves to win. That winner receives a year’s free subscription to Sky.
