Dear Guests,

mit dieser Jubiläumsausgabe feiern wir unser 15-jähriges Bestehen und stossen mit Ihnen und mit den Menschen, die Ihren Aufenthalt für Sie stets besonders und mit viel Leidenschaft gestalten, auf die gemeinsame Zukunft an. Der Grundstein der Marke Park Hyatt wurde durch den amerikanischen Unternehmer Jay Pritzker vor 40 Jahren gelegt und seine Philosophie und Vision, Gästen ein „Home away from Home“ zu offerieren, wird bis heute unverändert gelebt und durch unsere Protagonisten täglich in die Welt getragen.

This edition marks our 15th anniversary and wewould like to raise a toast with you (and with the people who consistently and passionately make your stay special) to our future together. The American entrepreneur Jay Pritzker laid the foundations for the Park Hyatt brand 40 years ago and his philosophy and vision - to offer guests a “home away from home” - still remains unchanged to this day and is taken to all parts of the world by our protagonists on a daily basis.

In dieser vorliegenden Ausgabe werfen wir daher einen kurzen Blick auf die Park Hyatt Hotels rund um den Globus – vom Park Hyatt Wien bis zum Park Hyatt in Beaver Creek und stellen Ihnen in einem Portrait unseren neuen, jungen und talentierten Chefkoch Tarik Lange vor.

Spannende Persönlichkeiten wie unser Vice President Human Resources Yves Givel oder der grösste Andy-Warhol-Kunstsammler Mario Mazzoleni standen uns Rede und Antwort, welche Mission sie in dieser Welt haben und lieferten zudem noch interessante Einblicke über ein wertvolleres, aber auch kunstvolleres Leben. Therefore, in this edition we will take a brief look at Park Hyatt hotels around the globe - from Park Hyatt Vienna to Park Hyatt in Beaver Creek - and introduce you to our young and talented new chef, Tarik Lange, in a portrait.

Exciting personalities such as our Vice President of Human Resources Yves Givel or the greatest collector of Andy Warhol art, Mario Mazzoleni, answered our questions on what their mission is in this world and also delivered interesting insights into a more valuable and more artistic life. Of course, we would also like to present the new offers from our house, such as sparkling jewels and watches with a history, as well as insider tips for a journey to picturesque Gstaad.

Emotionales Konzert mit Pink-Ribbon-Ambassadoren

Bereits 1992 hat Evelyn Lauder die rosa Schleife ins Leben gerufen – ein Zeichen, das mittlerweile weltweit ein Synonym für den Kampf gegen Brustkrebs ist. Ein wichtiges Thema, das auch das Park Hyatt Zürich seit Jahren bewegt. Es ist für die Verantwortlichen und das ganze Team im luxuriösen 5-Sterne-Haus in der Limmatmetropole eine grosse Ehre einmal im Jahr Heimat der «Pink Ribbon Night» zu sein.

STARS AM HERD UND AUF DER BÜHNE In diesem Jahr stand die Benefiz-Gala wie die laufende BreastCancer-Kampagne unter dem Motto «Hoffnung auf Heilung vereint uns alle». Wie schon in den Jahren zuvor startete das einzigartige Event mit einem exklusiven Dinner – erneut ehrenamtlich kreiert von Sternekoch Anton Mosimann und der Küchencrew vom Park Hyatt Zürich. Im Anschluss öffnete der

Ballsaal zur legendären Überraschungsshow seine Türen.

Diesmal konnten sich die Gäste über magische Momente mit zwei Zauberkünstlern sowie ein Charity-Konzert der PinkRibbon-Markenbotschafter Jesse Rich, Eliane Müller, Tiziana Gulino und Viola Tami freuen.

EINE GRANDIOSE SPENDE VON 70'000 FRANKEN Durch das Programm führte Moderator Sven Epiney, der nicht nur für konstant gute Unterhaltung sorgte, sondern vor allem die Anwesenden motivierte, bei der Versteigerung grosszügig zu sein. Und seine Worte fanden Gehör: am Ende kamen 70'000 Franken zusammen. Diese werden zwecks einer Studie an die «Schweizerische Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Klinische Krebsforschung SAKK» weitergeleitet. www.pink-ribbon.ch

STARS IN THE KITCHEN AND ON THE STAGE This year the slogan behind the benefit gala and the current Breast Cancer campaign was «Hope for a cure unites us all». As in previous years the unique event started with an exclusive dinner – star chef Anton Mosimann again volunteered his creative skills.

Following that the ballroom opened its doors to the legendary surprise show. This year the guests were treated to magic moments with two magicians and a charity concert from the Pink Ribbon brand ambassadors Jesse Rich, Eliane Müller, Tiziana Gulino and Viola Tami.

A SPLENDID DONATION OF 70,000 FRANCS The program was presented by Sven Epiney, who not only consistently provided good entertainment, but most of all motivated those present to be generous at the auction. And he was heard: in the end 70,000 Francs was collected. The total will be forwarded to the «Swiss Group for Clinical Cancer Research SAKK» for a research study. www.pink-ribbon.ch

dann auf das Programm „Search Inside Yourself“ gestossen und habe mich zum Lehrer ausbilden lassen. Heute gebe ich etwa 10 Seminare pro Jahr, vor allem bei Hyatt aber auch in öffentlichen Programmen und bei externen Firmen weltweit.

Um was geht es bei „Search Inside Yourself“? „Search Inside Yourself“ ist ein Programm, das bei Google entstanden und auf die Entwicklung emotionaler Kompetenzen fokussiert ist. Es bedient sich ganz verschiedener Achtsamkeitsübungen, um gewisse Fähigkeiten zu entwickeln und zielt darauf ab uns aus unseren Gedanken in ein bewusstes Hier und Jetzt zu holen. „Search Inside Yourself“ basiert auf der Neurowissenschaft und folgt dem

klassischen Modell von Emotionaler Intelligenz über Selbstwahrnehmung, Selbststeuerung, Motivation, Empathie, Sozialkompetenzen und Führungsqualitäten.

Wie lässt sich Emotionale Intelligenz durch Achtsamkeit fördern?

Nun, Empathie wird durch soziale Faktoren beeinflusst. So habe ich natürlicherweise mehr Empathie für Leute, die mir nahestehen oder mir ähnlich sind. Für einen Fan des gegnerischen FussballClubs habe ich automatisch weniger Empathie. Bediene ich mich aber beispielsweise der „Just like me“-Übung, bei der ich bewusst versuche, in der anderen Person mehr Eigenschaften zu sehen, die mit mir selbst übereinstimmen, dann fördert das meine Empathie.

Herr Givel, Sie bringen Achtsamkeit und Mindful Leadership in die Führungsriegen. Wie sind Sie dazu gekommen?

Das war während meiner Zeit im Head Office in Chicago, wo ich als Vice President im Talent Management für Hyatt Global tätig war. Wir hatten uns dazu entschieden, eine weitere Dimension in unser Unternehmen zu bringen, bei der es nicht einfach um Geld verdienen geht, sondern auch um unseren ‚Purpose‘ oder Unternehmenszweck. Wir wollten uns besser um Mitarbeiterinnen, Mitarbeiter und Gäste kümmern und damit ‚Care‘ ins Zentrum unseres Tuns stellen. Ich besuchte damals einen Kurs bei Simon Sinek, dem Autor des Buches „Start with Why“ und begann danach, meine eigene Achtsamkeitspraxis zu entwickeln. Später bin ich

Im Rahmen von „Mindful Leadership“ ist in Ihren Vorträgen der Begriff „Learning Organisation“ immer wieder ein Thema ...

Richtig. Eine Learning Organisation ist ein Unternehmen, das sich kontinuierlich weiterentwickelt, sich dem Umfeld anpassen kann und keine Angst vor Veränderungen hat. Es muss Strukturen kreieren, in denen Mitarbeitende innovativ sein und Dinge ausprobieren können. Wichtig ist es aber ebenso, eine Kultur der psychologischen Sicherheit zu entwickeln, in der Mitarbeitende neue Sachen ausprobieren können, und nicht gleich gekündigt werden, wenn etwas nicht klappt.

Mit dem Angebot „Zen your Meeting“ bringt auch das Park Hyatt Zürich eine achtsame Dimension in Events und Meetings. Inwiefern sind Sie hier engagiert?

Ich arbeite im Park Hyatt sehr eng mit unserer sogenannten Wellbeing-Strategie, bei der es ums das Wohlbefinden unserer Gäste und Mitarbeiter geht. Bei unserem Angebot „Zen your Meeting“ geht es darum, mehr Achtsamkeit oder Wohlbefinden in die jeweilige Veranstaltung hineinzubringen: Beispielsweise durch gesunde Speisen, Yoga-Elemente oder Achtsamkeitsübungen. Meine Rolle reicht vom Consulting bis hin zu Meditationen, die ich aufnehme und zu denen Teilnehmende online Zugriff haben. Auf Wunsch bin ich auch selber vor Ort – für eine Keynote am Anfang der Veranstaltung oder als Begleitung für den ganzen Tag. Worin liegt für Sie die grösste Chance für unsere Zukunft?

Durch Achtsamkeit ein Bewusstsein zu schaffen, wie wir mit unserem Planeten, den Menschen und den Tieren umgehen.

Warum ist Empathie so wichtig für einen erfolgreichen Führungsstil?

Empathie fördert das Verstehen für die Anliegen seines Gegenübers und schafft Bewusstsein im Umgang miteinander und dafür, was in der Welt vor sich geht.

Dies wiederum hilft, bessere Firmenkulturen aufzubauen.

Mr Givel, you are introducing attentiveness and Mindful Leadership to management teams. How did that come about?

It was during my time at the Head Office in Chicago, where I worked as Vice President in Talent Management for Hyatt Global. We had made a decision to introduce a new dimension to our company, which would not be purely about making money but also about our purpose or company goal. We wanted to take better care of our employees and guests and in so doing place the concept of ‚Care‘ at the heart of our activities. At the time I attended a course by Simon Sinek, the author of the book „Start with Why“ and then began to develop my own mindfulness practice. Later I encountered the program „Search Inside Yourself“ and took the training to become a teacher.

Today I give roughly 10 seminars a year, predominantly at Hyatt but also in public programs and at external companies worldwide.

What is „Search Inside Yourself“ about? „Search Inside Yourself“ is a program that was created by Google and focuses on the development of more emotional competences. It makes use of completely different mindfulness practices to develop certain skills and aims to take us from our thoughts into a conscious here and now. „Search Inside Yourself“ is based on neuroscience and follows the classic model of emotional intelligence using self-perception, self-control, motivation, empathy, social skills and leadership qualities.

Correct. A Learning Organization is a company that is constantly developing further, can adapt to its environment and does not fear change. It has to create structures, in which employees can be innovative and try out things. However it is just as important to develop a culture of psychological security, in which employees can try out new things and will not be fired immediately if something does not work.

How can emotional intelligence be advanced through mindfulness?

Well, empathy is influenced by social factors. Therefore I naturally have more empathy for people who I am close to or are similar to me. I automatically feel less empathy for a fan of an opposing football club. However, if I use the „Just like me“ exercise for example, in which I try consciously to see more characteristics in the other person that match my own, my empathy is enhanced.

Why is empathy so important for a successful management style?

Empathy promotes understanding for the situation your counterparts are facing and creates consciousness when dealing with each other and for what is happening in the world. This in turn helps to establish better company cultures.

As part of „Mindful Leadership“ the term „Learning Organization“ is a recurring theme in your lectures ...

Park Hyatt Zürich is also bringing a mindful dimension to events and meetings with its „Zen your Meeting“ offer. To what extent are you involved in this concept?

I work very closely with our so-called Wellbeing Strategy at Park Hyatt, which addresses the physical comfort of our guests and employees. Our „Zen your Meeting“ offer involves the introduction of more mindfulness or wellbeing into the respective event: For example, with healthy meals, yoga elements or mindfulness exercises. My role extends from consulting through to meditations, which I record and which are available to participants online. On request I can appear in person – for a keynote at the beginning of the event or as a companion for the whole day.

Where do you see the greatest opportunity for our future?

By mindfully creating a consciousness as to how we handle our planet, people and animals.

Es ist eines der exquisiten Restaurants des Le Grand Bellevue. Das Luxushotel heisst seine Gäste im Dorfkern Gstaads willkommen. Nach einem kleinen Spaziergang durch ebendieses erreicht man ein weiteres Restaurant des Hauses: die Chesery. Hier kommt man in den Genuss von Robert Speths Sterneküche, zum Beispiel von einem Tempura-Hummer oder einem Schokoladensoufflé mit Mandarinensorbet. Eins ist garantiert, nach Gerichten wie diesen werden Sie mehr als nur gute Ratschläge parat haben. Die Adresse für Modebegeisterte ist die Boutique Maison Lorenz Bach – und mit ein Grund, warum die Habitués hier oben so chic gekleidet sind. Ein Tempel für Feinschmecker ist das Delikatessengeschäft Pernet Comestibles. Ob Kaviar, Pasteten oder Käse, zu erstehen gibt es, was Gourmetherzen schneller schlagen lässt.

The address for fashion enthusiasts is the boutique Maison Lorenz Bach – it is one of the reasons why the habitués up here are all dressed so elegantly. The delicatessen Pernet Comestibles is a temple for connoisseurs. From caviar to pâtés or cheese, you can purchase everything your gourmet heart desires. Finally you should not miss out on visiting the R – Chocolate Boutique. It has Gstaad Schoggi and the best cream slices far and wide.

TO DO The Glacier 3000, the only glacier ski area in the Bern uplands, is a particular highlight. Nine slopes offer the optimal conditions for beginners as well as experienced skiers with blue, red and yellow levels of difficulty. At 2971 meters altitude above the sea, the Peak Walk by Tissot guarantees a thrill: A 107 meter long hanging bridge connects the View Point with the Scex-Rouge summit and offers a breath-taking view of snowy mountain caps in a sea of clouds. On clear days an impressive mountain face appears and you can see the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc and the Bern summits Eiger, Mönch und Jungfrau to name but a few.

Seine Kochausbildung hat Tarik Lange im Leipziger The West In absolviert. Kurz danach folgte er dem Ruf des Victoria Jungfrau in Interlaken und verliess, zusammen mit seiner heutigen Frau Eliane, die Heimat. Weitere Stationen markierten das Bad Bubendorf in Basel, womit der Sprung in die Sternegastronomie gelang, später dann das Seedamm Plaza in Pfäffikon.

Seit März 2019 kocht er nun erfolgreich in der offenen Küche des Restaurant parkhuus. Doch Tarik Lange ist

nicht nur ein begnadeter Koch, sondern auch ein echter Teamplayer. „Das Team,“ so sagt er, „ist das Wichtigste. In der Küche geht es nicht um Einzelkämpfer, sondern um das Gemeinsame, aber auch um eine gute Stimmung.“ Seine Küche beschreibt er als „jung, frisch und verspielt“ und sein erklärtes Ziel ist es, die Gäste glücklich zu machen und sie die Freude in der Küche spüren und schmecken zu lassen!

REGIONAL UND NACHHALTIG Ob Fische und Krebse aus dem Zürichsee, Safran aus Wetzikon, oder das Fleisch, das aus einem Umkreis von 50 Kilometern stammt – mit frischen und nachhaltigen Produkten aus der Region knüpft Tarik Lange an die Tradition des parkhuus an, setzt aber auf eine leichtere Küche als zuvor. In seinen Gerichten verzichtet er auch einmal auf die gewohnten Stärkebeilagen und überrascht dafür mit spannenden Beilage-Kreationen aus Couscous, Gerste, Weizen oder Quinoa. Zentral in seinem kulinarischen Schaffen sind Aromen, aber auch, das sogenannte Umami-Gefühl zu kreieren, wenn also alle Geschmackskomponenten zusammenkommen und miteinander harmonieren. Im parkhuus geniesse er ganz besonders die kreative Freiheit, die ohne den Rückhalt von Küchendirektor Frank Widmer nicht möglich wäre, so Tarik Lange, der sich schon jetzt auf die zahlreichen Gäste freut, deren Gaumen er in Zukunft noch verzaubern wird.

AT ONLY 29-YEARS OF AGE, TARIK LANGE IS THE NEW HEAD CHEF AT RESTAURANT PARKHUUS AT PARK HYATT ZURICH. THE YOUNG CHEF AND HIS TEAM HAVE COMMITTED THEMSELVES TO NO LESS A TASK THAN PROVIDING CULINARY BLISS FOR THEIR GUESTS.

He has been cooking successfully since March 2019 in the open kitchen at Restaurant parkhuus. However, Tarik Lange is not only a gifted chef, but also a real team player. „The team,“ he claims, „is the most important thing. In the kitchen it is not only about individuals, but about working together, as well as a good atmosphere.“ He describes his cuisine as „young, fresh and playful“ and it is his declared objective to make the guests happy and to let them feel and taste the joy in the cuisine!

LOCAL AND SUSTAINABLE From fish and crabs taken from Lake Zurich, saffron from Wetzikon, or the meat that is sourced from a radius of 50 kilometres –Tarik Lange follows the tradition of parkhuus with fresh and sustainable products from the region, focusing on a lighter cuisine than previously. In his dishes he also foregoes the usual carbohydrate side dish and surprises with exciting sides – creations with couscous, barley, wheat or quinoa. Flavours are at the centre of his culinary creations, but also, generating the so-called umami feeling, when all flavour components fuse and harmonise together. In parkhuus he particularly values the creative freedom, which would not be possible without the support of kitchen director Frank Widmer, states Tarik Lange, who is already looking forward to numerous guests, who will have the pleasure of experiencing his culinary delights in the future.

Tarik Lange successfully completed his training to become a chef in The Westin in Leipzig. Shortly afterwards he followed the call of Victoria Jungfrau in Interlaken and left his home, together with his now wife Eliane. His further stations included Bad Bubendorf in Basel, where he managed the leap to five-star cuisine, later the Seedamm Plaza in Pfäffikon.

W

enn Miguel Barrera Barrachina spricht, dann erzählen seine Augen mit. Vor allem, wenn er zurück in seine Kindheit blickt, die er auf einer Farm verbracht hat. „Meine Familie hat mir alles beigebracht, was ich wissen musste. Von meiner Mamá aber habe ich das Kochen gelernt“, erzählt der sympathische Spanier und strahlt.

Vermutlich wäre er heute ein anderer Chef, hätte er nicht in diesen frühen Jahren die Liebe zu seinem Land, zu den selbst angebauten Tomaten, wildwachsenden Kräutern und Kartoffeln kultiviert. Als seine Eltern in die Gastronomie einstiegen, ahnten sie noch nicht, dass ihr Sohn eines Tages ein weltbekanntes Sternerestaurant führen würde.

Barrera aber lernte von der Pike auf, erst half er im Familienbetrieb mit, um mit Anfang 20 auf der renommierten „Castellon Catering School“ in Valencia erste Erfahrungen mit der Nouvelle Cuisine zu machen. Auch nach all den Jahren spricht er mit derselben Begeisterungsfähigkeit über diese Zeit: „Für mich war es ein Geschenk, all diese neuen Techniken zu erlernen und zu merken, dass mir plötzlich eine neue Welt offensteht.“ Seiner Liebe zu den traditionellen Speisen seiner Heimat ist er bis heute treu geblieben. Kartoffeln, Tomate, Knoblauch und Paprika dürfen zu Höchstform auflaufen, wenn Barrera sie zu fassen bekommt, das erleben die Gäste vom „Cal Paradís“ in La Vall d’Alba zwischen Barcelona und Valencia jede Woche aufs Neue. „Besonders Tomaten liebe ich und habe rund 80 verschiedene Rezepte für ihre Zubereitung.“ Wenn Barrera nicht gerade in Japan, Indien oder der Schweiz im Rahmen der Spanish Extravaganza Ibérico Schwein sous-vide gart oder auch seinen berühmten Tumbet, einen traditionellen Gemüseeintopf, auf den Tisch bringt, triftt man ihn frühmorgens auf dem kleinen Fischmarkt in Vall d’Alba an. Sein Credo: „Das Produkt ist alles! Wenn meine Zutaten exzellent sind, dann geht der Rest ganz von allein! Wichtig ist mir, dass man bei meinen Gerichten schon beim ersten Bissen das Gefühl hat, nach Hause zu kommen.“

W

hen Miguel Barrera Barrachina speaks, his eyes tell the story as well. In particular when he looks back to his childhood, which he spent on a farm. „My family taught me everything I needed to know. But I learnt to cook from my Mamá“, related the pleasant Spaniard and beamed with joy.

He would presumably have been a different chef today if he had not in those early years nurtured the love for his country, for his home-grown tomatoes, wild growing herbs and potatoes. When his parents got into gastronomy, they could not yet know that their son would one day run a world famous star restaurant. But Barrera learned from the ground up, initially he helped out in the family business, then in his early 20s had his first experience with Nouvelle Cuisine at the renowned „Castellon Catering School“ in Valencia. Even after all these years he still talks with the same enthusiasm about that time: „It was a present for me to learn all these new techniques and to notice that a new world has suddenly been opened up to me.“ To this day he has remained true to his love for the traditional dishes of his home. Potatoes, tomatoes, garlic and peppers reach their full potential when Barrera gets hold of them and his guests at „Cal Paradís“ in La Vall d’Alba between Barcelona and Valencia get to pay testimony to this every single week. „I particularly love tomatoes and have roughly 80 different recipes for preparing them.“ If Barrera is not cooking pork sous vide or serving up his famous Tumbet, a traditional vegetable stew, in Japan, India or Switzerland as part of the Spanish Extravaganza Ibérico, you can meet him in the early morning at the little fish market in Vall d’Alba. His motto: „The product is everything! If the ingredients are excellent, then everything falls into place! It is important for me that the first bite of my dishes conveys the feeling of coming home.“

ragt man Álvaro Salazar, ob er etwas auf seine kulinarischen Reisen mitnimmt, sagt er: „Meine Söhne!“ Allerdings handelt es sich hierbei nicht um etwaige Sprösslinge, sondern ein wohl verpacktes Messerset, dass der 34-Jährige selbst beim Gespräch in der Lobby des Park Hyatt in Zürich mit dabei hat. Auch wenn er heute als Chef des neuen Gourmetrestaurants Voro im Park Hyatt Mallorca insbesondere balearische Produkte kredenzt, kocht er doch auch immer wieder gern Lieblingsrezepte aus seiner andalusischen Heimat, wie das Lamm, 24 Stunden gegart, mit Knoblauch, Karotten und Kräutern. „Ich liebe es, traditionellen Gerichten einen modernen Twist zu verleihen“, sagt der Spanier, der einst von seiner Tante Luisa an den Herd geführt wurde. Er ist der junge Wilde im Bund der spanischen Köche, trägt gern die neuesten Nike Turnschuhe, hört beim Kochen auch schon mal Trip Hop und bezeichnet seinen Stil als „risikofreudig“. Doch gerade diese Neugierde auf Neues ist es, die Salazar ausmacht und ihm auf seiner letzten Station im „Argos“ den ersten Stern eingebracht hat. Und so wird man bei ihm sicher sein dürfen, dass es stets eine Überraschung gibt, so wie orangefarbene Gazpacho, die mit einem Häubchen aus Mescal-Grapefruitschaum daherkommt oder das 10-Gänge-Menü im Voro, das sich in Sonnenaufgang, Zenit und Sonnenuntergang gliedert. Zusammen mit den Kollegen zu kochen, ist für Salazar ein Geschenk: „Wenn ich mit jemandem koche, kann ich spüren, was für ein Mensch er ist. Ich lasse mich inspirieren, lerne, tausche mich aus und freue mich, wenn wir im Rahmen der Spanish Extravaganza mit unseren vereinten Kochkünsten etwas Tolles auf die Beine stellen.“

f you ask Álvaro Salazar whether he takes anything with him on his culinary travels, he says: „My sons!“ However, he is not referring to his offspring, but a well packaged set of knives that the 34-year old even had with him for the interview in the lobby of Park Hyatt in Zurich.

Even if he serves predominantly Balearic products today as chef of the new gourmet restaurant Voro in Park Hyatt Mallorca, he also often likes to cook his favourite recipes from his Andalusian home, such as lamb, slowly cooked for 24 hours, with garlic, carrots and herbs. „I love to give traditional dishes a modern twist“, says the Spaniard, who was initially introduced to cooking by his Aunt Luisa. He is the young, wild one in the Spanish chefs league, likes to wear the latest Nike trainers, sometimes listens to Trip Hop while cooking and refers to his style as „dauntless“. But it is exactly this curiosity for something new that makes Salazar stand out from the crowd and brought him his first star at his last station in „Argos“.

Therefore you can also be sure to get a surprise when relishing his dishes, for example orange coloured gazpacho, served with Mescal-Grapefruit foam on top, or the 10-course menu at Voro, which is divided into sunrise, zenith and sunset. Cooking with colleagues is a blessing for Salazar: „When I cook with someone, I can feel what sort of a person they are. I get inspired, learn, exchange ideas and look forward to creating something fantastic with our combined cooking skills as part of the Spanish Extravaganza.“

is heute esse er am allerliebsten die Schinken-Kroketten seiner Mutter, schwört Ignacio Solana und setzt grinsend nach: „Es ist kein Zufall, dass wir 2017 den Preis für die weltbesten Kroketten bei der Madrid Fusion eingeheimst haben – ich hatte die beste Lehrerin!“ An der kantabrischen Küste im Norden Spaniens aufgewachsen, liebt er bis heute Meeresfrüchte und zählt seinen warmen Hummersalat zu den Signature-Speisen seines Sternerestaurants „Solana“. „Wie die Fischer meiner Heimat zu sagen pflegen: Spanische Hummer schwimmen drei Mal: Im Meer, in Olivenöl und in Weisswein!“ 1938, lange bevor Ignacio geboren wurde, eröffneten seine Grosseltern das Familienrestaurant „Solana“, das nun der Enkel seit 2004 führt. Mit elf Jahren servierte er hier schon den Gästen Tortilla und kochte erstmals – zunächst für seine Familie, ein einfaches Reisgericht mit Eiern, Tomate und Mais. „Mein Vater sagte damals zu mir: wenn du jetzt schon so kochen kannst, wirst du immer als Koch überleben können. Das bedeutete mir damals eine Menge.“ Und so stand es fest, dass der Junior in die Fussstapfen seiner Eltern und Grosseltern treten würde und mit 13 auf die Escuela de Hostelería ging. Seine Leidenschaft und Kreativität aber habe er vor allem auf den Ausflügen in Restaurants wie dem Aldebarán in Badajoz und dem Europa in Pamplona entdeckt. „Spanien ist so faszinierend, weil du keine 100 Kilometer reisen musst, um vollkommen verschiedene Landschaften, Traditionen und Gerichte entdecken zu können. Der Norden ist ganz anders als der Süden und im Westen isst man vollkommen anders, als im Osten. Für mich als Koch eine Quelle der Inspirationen.

is favourite food to date is still his mother’s ham croquettes, swears Ignacio Solana and adds with a grin: „It is no coincidence that we won the prize for the world’s best croquettes at the Madrid Fusion in 2017 – I had the best teacher!“As he grew up on the Cantabrian coast in the North of Spain, he still loves seafood to this day and his warm lobster salad ranks among his signature dishes in his star restaurant „Solana“. „As the fishermen in my hometown say: Spanish lobsters swim three times: In the sea, in olive oil and in white wine!“ In 1938, long before Ignacio was born, his grandparents opened the family restaurant „Solana“ which their grandson has been running since 2004. At the age of eleven he already served his guests tortilla and cooked for the first time– initially for his family, a simple rice dish with eggs, tomatoes and corn. „My father said to me at the time: if you can cook that well now, you will always be able to make a living as a chef. That meant a lot to me at the time.“ And so it was decided that Junior would follow in the footsteps of his parents and grandparents and he went to the Escuela de Hostelería at the age of 13.

However he mainly discovered his passion and creativity on visits to restaurants such as the Aldebarán in Badajoz and the Europa in Pamplona. „Spain is so fascinating because you don’t even have to travel 100 kilometres to be able to discover completely different landscapes, traditions and dishes. The North is completely different to the South and in the West you eat completely different food than in the East. For me as a chef it is a source of inspiration.“

Und so ist es heute geradezu berauschend, durch die mit kunstvoll verzierten Seidentapeten ausgestatteten Zimmer zu gehen, die Statue der ineinander verschlungenen Liebenden von Auguste Rodin zu entdecken oder das von Toulouse Lautrec gemalte Bildnis einer Tänzerin aus dem Moulin Rouge. Dass hier Feste gefeiert wurden, die seinesgleichen suchen, man spürt’s.

Nun muss man sagen, dass es im französischen Épernay die Avenue de Champagne gibt, die sozusagen das Melrose Place aller namhaften Champagnerhersteller ist. Von Moët Chandon über Veuve Cliquot hin zu Ruinart – die Nachbarschaft des Maison Perrier-Jouët lässt sich sehen. Dass alle auf einem Fleck vereint sind, hat seinen guten Grund. Nur wer Haus und vor allem Weinstöcke auf dem Boden dieser Region hat, ist ermächtigt, Schaumwein herzustellen, der sich dann auch Champagner nennen und auf dem Etikett den Hinweis auf die Appelation d’Origine Protegée tragen darf. Im Falle von Perrier-Jouët geschieht das bereits seit rund 200 Jahren und kaum ein Haus blickt auf solch eine wunderbare Geschichte zurück wie dieses.

Wenn Monsieur Thierry in seiner grünen Uniform die Tür der Maison Belle Époque öffnet und unter einem gezwirbelten Moustache gewinnend lächelt, hat die Reise in die Vergangenheit begonnen. Keiner kann die Liebesgeschichte der einstigen Hausherren so hübsch erzählen wie der Concierge des Hauses. 1811 war es,

als Korklieferant Pierre-Nicolas Perrier und seine Ehefrau Rose Adélaide Jouët (deren Familie Calvados herstellte) genau hier die Firma Perrier-Jouët gründeten. Eine Seltenheit zu der Zeit allein, dass der Mädchenname von Madame mit einfliessen durfte, eine petite sensation. Dank Thierry und Brand Education Ambassador Giacomo Fanzio erfährt man von der Liebe der Familie zu den schönen Künsten und der Natur. Sohn Charles entpuppte sich als Top-Botaniker, der sich mit 300 Orchideensorten und dem Wachstum der Weinreben botanisch hervortat und darüber hinaus 1861 erstmals die britische Königin Victoria mit den Flaschen seines Elternhauses versorgen durfte.

„Es gibt drei Dinge im Leben, die unerträglich sind: kalter Kaffee, eine überreizte Frau und lauwarmer Champagner“, sagte Orson Welles einst. Eines ist sicher, in dem Anwesen von Perrier-Jouët hätte sich der amerikanische Schauspieler pudelwohl gefühlt.

Wer in der französischen Champagne einmal durch die Jugendstilpforten des traditionsreichen Hauses eintreten darf, wird stets perfekt temperierten Schaumwein serviert bekommen.

Die Söhne seines Schwagers, Henri und Octave, engagierten schliesslich den befreundeten Künstler Emile Gallé, der die japanische Anemone auf die Bouteille des Champagners setzte – bis heute das Wahrzeichen des Hauses. Das Leben mit all seinen schönen Seiten zu feiern, den Gegentrend zur grauen Industrialisierung setzen und Perrier-Jouët zum Sinnbild der Belle Époque – also der Epoche des Schönen – zu machen, ist somit nicht zuletzt diesem Trio zu verdanken.

Am Ende des Tages wartet in der schmucken Bar des Hauses ein ganz besonderes Highlight: Der langjährige Kellermeister Hervé Deschamps und seine Nachfolgerin Séverine Frerson sind frisch von der Ernte hergekommen, um dem Abschluss-Abendessen beizuwohnen. Ein Geschenk, denn natürlich sind Menschen, die ihr Leben der Erzeugung von Premium-Champagner widmen, keine Durchschnittsvertreter. Wir lernen: „Champagner kann man zu jeder Tageszeit trinken und es sollte viel öfter Menüs mit durchgehender Champagner-Begleitung geben!“ (Hervé) und:

Der Grand Brut gilt als Businesscard des Hauses. Das ausgewogene Verhältnis von Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir und Chardonnay macht ihn zu Everybodys Darling. Während man die zart perlende Struktur geniesst, exotische Früchte, gar Honig zu finden meint, lauscht es sich den Anekdoten noch fröhlicher.

„Frauen und Männer haben einen unterschiedlichen Zugang Champagner zu schmecken – deswegen ist es immer bereichernd, wenn beide Meinungen zusammenkommen!“ (Séverine).

Und während weit unten, in den schummrig beleuchteten Kellergängen hinter schweren Gittertüren die älteste Champagner-Flasche der Welt ruht (von 1825!) und die von Hervé komponierten Rosé-Champagner, Grand Brut und Blanc de Blanc, darf man sich freuen, nicht mehr an einem amerikanischen Dinner von 1850 teilnehmen zu müssen. Damals nämlich mochte man’s süss und in einer Flasche Schaumwein war deutlich mehr Zucker als in einer Coca Cola zu finden. „Ungeniessbarer Sirup!“, lacht Fanzio.

Dass wir in Europa auf den rechten Genusspfad gefunden haben, verdanken wir übrigens dem britischen Empire – das gelangte als Kolonialmacht mit stark gewürzten indischen Speisen in Kontakt und verlangte plötzlich nach erfrischendem, trockenen Perlwein.

Bleibt nur zu sagen: God save the Queen und – Santé!

In den Kellern des Hauses ist es dank der für die Region typischen Kreidewände frisch und feucht – für die verschiedenen Jahrgänge der BelleÉpoque-Jahrgänge auf den Rüttelpulten das ideale Klima. Im Maison Belle Époque gibt es einen ein Raum, der „Eden“ getauft wurde. In diesem lagern hinter einer schweren Gittertür die Schätze des Hauses, darunter die beiden Flaschen Perrier Jouët von 1825.

IT IS AFTER ALL TYPICAL FOR THE COMPANY THAT MAYBE ONE OR TWO GLASSES MORE ARE CONSUMED HERE THAN AT HOME … „There are three things in life that are inacceptable: cold coffee, an overwrought woman and lukewarm Champagne“, as Orson Welles once said. One thing is certain, the American actor would have felt right at home in the Perrier-Jouët estate. Those who have been fortunate enough to gain access through the art nouveau gateway of the traditional company in French Champagne, will always receive sparkling wine at the perfect temperature.

It has to be said that in the French city of Épernay there is an Avenue de Champagne that is, as it were, the Melrose Place of all renowned Champagne producers. From Moët Chandon to Veuve Cliquot through to Ruinart – an impressive neighborhood around Maison Perrier-Jouët. There is a good reason why all are gathered at one location. Only those who have their company and more importantly their vines in the earth in this region, have the right to produce sparkling wine and to call it Champagne as well as being allowed to bear the title Appelation d’Origine Protegée on the label. In the case of Perrier-Jouët this has been the case for roughly 200 years and hardly any other company can look back on such a wonderful history.

When Monsieur Thierry opens the door of Maison Belle Époque in his green uniform and produces a winning smile under a twirled moustache, the journey into the past has begun. No one

can tell the love story of the former gentlemen of the house as well as the company concierge. It was 1811 when the cork supplier Pierre-Nicolas Perrier and his wife Rose Adélaide Jouët (whose family produced Calvados),founded the company Perrier-Jouët at exactly this spot. A rarity at the time, not least

due to the fact that the maiden name of madame was allowed to be integrated, a little sensation. Thanks to Thierry and Brand Education Ambassador Giacomo Fanzio we can learn about the family’s love of the fine arts and nature. Son Charles turned out to be a top botanist, who excelled in his field with 300 types of orchid and the growth of the vine and also had the honor of presenting the British Queen Victoria with a bottle from his parents company for the first time in 1861. His brother-in-law’s sons, Henri and Octave, then engaged the services of their friend the artist Emile Gallé, who designed the Japanese anemone on the Champagne bottle– the company’s trademark to date. Celebrating life with all its wonderful facets, providing a contrast to the grey of industrialization and making Perrier-Jouët the symbol of the Belle Époque – the era of the beautiful – should in no small measure be attributed to this trio.

At the end of the day there is a particular highlight waiting at the pretty company bar: The cellar master, with the company for a number of years, Hervé Deschamps and his successor Séverine Frerson have just come back from the harvest to attend the final dinner. A gift, because these are obviously people who have

And while far below us, in the dimly lit cellar passageways behind heavy grille doors the oldest bottle of Champagne in the world is resting (from 1825!) and the Rosé-Champagne composed by Hervé, Grand Brut and Blanc de Blanc, fortunately, no longer have to be part of an American Dinner from 1850. At the time the taste was rather sweet and in one bottle of sparkling wine there was significantly more sugar than in a Coca Cola. „Unpalatable syrup!“, laughs Fanzio.

By the way we have the British Empire to thank for the fact that we in Europe found the right taste path – they had as a colonial power come into contact with strongly spiced Indian dishes and suddenly had a need for refreshing, dry sparkling wine.

Only one thing left to say: God save the Queen and – Santé!

In the company’s cellars it is fresh and moist thanks to the chalk walls that are typical for the region – the ideal climate for the different vintages of Belle Époque on the riddling racks. In Maison Belle Époque there is a room that has been christened „Eden“. In this store behind a heavy grille door lie the treasures of the house, including both bottles of Perrier Jouët from 1825.

Meine Grossmutter Antonina Gmurzynska hat 1965 in Deutschland die Galerie gegründet. Sie war der Zeit immer voraus und zeigte im Westen Deutschlands schon Russische Avantgarde und förderte stets junge Künstlertalente. Heute gilt die Galerie Gmurzynska als eine der führenden Galerien weltweit für die Klassische Moderne und die Nachkriegskunst. Nach den abgeschlossenen Studien in VWL und Kunstgeschichte und „art law“ stiess ich 2015 dazu. Heute leite ich als Direktor die „external affairs“.

2. Das Modellauto Porsche 718RSK wurde Ende der 1950er-Jahre entwickelt, es erinnert mich an die Anfänge des modernen Motorsports und zeigt mir, dass sich kreatives Umdenken durchsetzen kann.

3. Natalia Goncharova, ich war schon immer sehr stolz auf die vielen Kataloge, die meine Mutter und Grossmutter publiziert haben. Sie zählen weltweit zu den wichtigsten Kunstpublikationen. Es gab Jahre, in denen wir mehr Bücher rausgebracht haben als mancher Verlag. Dadurch entwickelte ich die Liebe zu Kunstbüchern. Natalia Goncharova ist ein Katalog, der von der Tate Modern zu der Goncharova-Ausstellung herausgebracht wurde, in der meine Mutter eine persönliche Leihgeberin war. Das Bild hing mein Leben lang bei uns zu Hause und ich war sehr früh ein Fan von ihr. Erst Jahre später erfuhr ich von ihrer immensen Wichtigkeit in der Russischen Avantgarde.

Manche sagen, man habe den Architekten in Max Bill Zeit seines Lebens unterschätzt. Dagegen spricht, dass grossartige Strukturen wie sein Atelierhaus in Höngg, das er schon 1933 als sein allererstes selbst verantwortetes Gebäude errichtete, oder die Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm nur zwei von vielen Arbeiten sind, die heute als architektonisch wegweisend gelten. Marcel Meili und Markus Peter jedenfalls, die als Architekten für das 2004 eröffnete Park Hyatt Zürich verantwortlich zeichnen, leugnen nicht den Einfluss Bills auf ihre gesamte Arbeit. Marcel Meili spricht bereits in einem «Brief aus Zürich» (*1988) davon, dass für Künstler wie Bill «... die Moderne Programm» bleibt und «...das Vertrauen in den Rationalismus ... die nicht-figurativen ästhetischen Untersuchungen regiert ...». Etwas umständlich formuliert heisst es nichts anderes als «keep it simple».

Max Bill kam 1908 in Winterthur zur Welt. Er begann eine Lehre als Silberschmied an der Kunstgewerbeschule in Zürich, traf 1925 auf den über 20 Jahre älteren Le Corbusier und fand 1927 den Weg nach Dessau, wo sich das Bauhaus zu formieren begonnen hatte. Max Bill studierte dort, saugte die dargebotenen Möglichkeiten der Moderne von Klee, Kandinsky und Moholy-Nagy auf und bündelte seine neu gewonnenen Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten als Maler, Plastiker, Grafiker, Publizist, Produktge-

stalter und Architekt. In dermassen vielen Disziplinen gut zu sein ist spektakulär, bei einem so komplex denkenden Menschen wie Max Bill reichte allein eine Kunst nicht aus, die vielen Facetten der neu entdeckten Klarheit zu benützen. Viele wegweisende Mitstreiter gab es in der Zeit, nicht wenige sind als Schaffende entarteter Kunst 1933 nach Hitlers Machtergreifung eingebremst oder sogar vernichtet worden. Max Bill, auf vermeintlich sicherem Terrain in der Schweiz, half seinen verfolgten Kollegen, beherbergte sie bei sich in der Schweiz, bot ihnen Sicherheit und Raum zum Denken und Kreieren.

Die Schweiz jedoch strafte ihn dafür mit einem Eintrag in die Staatsschutzakten.

Seiner Umtriebigkeit tat das keinen Abbruch, ein Universalgenie sondergleichen, der Zeit seines Lebens studierte, sich weiterbildete, lernte. Sind es rückblickend nicht die einfachen Dinge des Lebens, die uns lieb und teuer werden? Ob Max Bill genau das auf lange Sicht im Sinn hatte, ist heute nicht mehr nachzuvollziehen. Aber ein Beispiel für seine Weitsicht ist der Ulmer Hocker.

«Mein Vater hat besonders in diesem Fall auf die optimalste Funktionalität mit einem Minimum an Aufwand fokussiert», erinnert sich der Archäologe Dr. phil. Jakob Bill (*1942), einziger Sohn Max Bills und seiner ersten Frau, der talentierten Fotografin Binia Bill (†1988).

12 Jahre war Jakob alt, als sein Vater sich in seiner Funktion als designierter Direktor für die in Ulm geplante Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) Gedanken über deren Ausstattung machte. Das Budget war schmal, ein Mehrzweckmöbel die Lösung. Und so entstand aus massivem Fichtenholz, fertigen Besenstielen und schmalen Buchenholzschienen (unter die beiden Stützen montiert, damit das Fichtenholz beim Rumschieben nicht ausfranst) ein HockerRegalTragSitzStehDeko-Objekt.

Zur Produktion wurden vorhandene Ressourcen genutzt, es gab eine Maschine, die Zinken von einer bestimmten Breite in das Holz schnitt, das Holz selbst war geschenktes Material in einfacher Qualität. Max Bill und sein Dozenten-Kollege Hans Gugelot, ein paar Studenten und die hauseigene Schreinerei setzten die Billsche Idee schliesslich um, die bald aus dem Bild der 1955 eröffneten HfG Ulm nicht mehr wegzudenken war.

Studenten nutzten den Ulmer Hocker, wie das Möbel schnell betitelt wurde, als Sitzgelegenheit auf dem Zimmer, in der Mensa und überall sonst in der Schule, mit dem Besenstielgriff als Trage für ihre Unterlagen, quer oder auf den Sitz gestellt als Regal, die Dozenten stockten damit zusätzlich noch ihre Pulte auf, der Einsatzvielfalt waren keine Grenzen gesetzt. «Die Schule wurde aufgelöst, der Schreiner zog mitsamt der Maschine, die die Zacken gefräst hatte, nach Berlin», erzählt Jakob Bill, der auch die «max, binia + jakob bill stiftung» mit seiner Frau Chantal führt, vom weiteren Schicksal des Ulmer Hockers. Die Hocker der Universität seien zum grössten Teil von den Studenten schlicht annektiert worden, man habe «seinen» Hocker einfach aus der Schulauflösung mitgenommen, schlau, wer so einen noch hat, es ist heute ein rares Kulturgut.

Auch wenn der Ulmer Hocker unter Lizenz seit Jahren neu aufgelegt wird, findet man ihn im ganzen Park Hyatt in Zürich nicht, aber unweit des Hotels in der Bahnhofstrasse Höhe Hausnummer 47 steht eine PavillonSkulptur von Max Bill. Sie ist aus 63 gleich grossen Quadern gebaut, ein weiterer Beweis der rationalen Denk- und Arbeitsweise Bills. Das Atelierhaus in Höngg, in dem Bill bis 1968 lebte, kann man nicht besichtigen, nur anschauen von aussen, sein 1967 erbautes Wohnund Atelierhaus steht ebenfalls noch unverändert in Zumikon. Die «max, binia + jakob bill stiftung» arbeitet derzeit daran, das riesige Archiv zu digitalisieren und verwaltet neben den Arbeiten von Max und Binia Bill auch die Werke von Jakob Bill, dem Sohn, der das künstlerische Erbe seines Vaters umarmt und weiterdenkt. Darüber hinaus auch die Werke von David Bill (†2018), einziger Sohn Jakob und Chantal Bills, der seine Ausdruckskraft in Skulpturen packte, die ohne Zweifel eine Fortführung der Billschen Genialität darstellen.

Formgebend: Max Bill, hier in einem Portrait Ende der 1940erJahre, beschäftigte Zeit seines Lebens nicht nur die Praktikabilität einer Form, sondern auch ihre Schönheit. Das Objekt stilisiert die unendliche Zeit, 1961 entwirft Max Bill Uhren für das Deutsche Unternehmen Junghans.

MAX BILL WOULD ZURICH THE EXCEPTIONAL SWISS ARTIST AND ARCHITECT MAX BILL HAVE APPROVED OF PARK HYATT ZÜRICH AS A BUILDING? MAYBE – THE MASSIVE PRESENCE OF THE CUBIST CONSTRUCTION IS TO A CERTAIN DEGREE COMPATIBLE WITH HIS STYLE. THE MASTER OF DESIGN WHO DIED IN 1994 UNDOUBTEDLY INFLUENCED THE BUILDING IN THE MIDDLE OF ZURICH.

Max Bill was born in 1908 in Winterthur. He began an apprenticeship as silversmith at the Kunstgewerbeschule

(school of arts and crafts) in Zurich, met the over 20 year older Le Corbusier in 1925 and made his way to Dessau in 1927, where the Bauhaus had already begun to form. Max Bill studied there; absorbed the inspiration offered in Modern art from Klee, Kandinsky and Moholy-Nagy and pooled his newfound means of expression as a painter, sculptor, graphic artist, publicist, product designer and architect. It is spectacular to be good in so many disciplines, for a complex thinking individual like Max Bill one art was not enough to use the many aspects of the newly discovered clarity. There were a number of fellow pioneering campaigners at the time and in 1933 after Hitler’s takeover many of them were prevented from practicing their art or even destroyed as creators of degenerate art. Max Bill, on supposedly safe ground in Switzerland, helped his persecuted colleagues, giving them shelter in Switzerland, offered them safety and space to think and create. However, Switzerland punished him by entering his name in the state protection files.

This did not stop his activities in any way, an unparalleled allround genius, who studied his entire life, furthered his education, learned. In retrospect is it not the simple things in life that are most dear to us? It can no longer be understood today whether Max Bill had exactly that in mind in the long term.

But an example of his vision is the Ulmer Hocker. «My father focused in particular in this case on the most optimal functionality with a minimum of effort », remembers the archaeologist Dr. phil. Jakob Bill (*1942), only son of Max Bill and his first wife, the talented photographer Binia Bill (†1988). Jakob was 12 years old when his father thought, in his position as designated director, about the furnishings for the Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) planned in Ulm. The budget was tight, multipurpose furniture was the solution. And the result was a stoolshelfsupportsittingstandingdecoration object made of solid spruce wood, fabricated broom handles and narrow

Some claim that the architect Max Bill was underestimated in his own lifetime. It is however a fact that magnificent structures such as his studio house in Höngg, which he constructed as early as 1933 as his very first building for which he was solely responsible, or the Hochschule für Gestaltung (College of Design) in Ulm, are only two of many works that are considered today to be architecturally groundbreaking. Marcel Meili and Markus Peter, who are the architects responsible for Park Hyatt Zurich which opened in 2004, certainly do not deny the influence Bill had on their entire work. Marcel Meili already commented in a «Brief from Zurich»* (1988) that «... the modern program» remains for artists such as Bill and «... trust in rationalism ...which governs non-figurative aesthetic studies...». This somewhat cumbersome formulation means nothing more than «keep it simple».

The available resources were used in the production, there was one machine, which cut the prongs of a certain width into the wood, the wood itself was simple quality, donated material. Max Bill and his lecturer colleague Hans Gugelot, a few students and the on-house carpentry workshop ultimately implemented Bill’s idea, which was soon to become an integral part of the image of the HfG Ulm that opened in 1955.

Students used the Ulmer Hocker, as the piece of furniture was quickly christened, as a seat in their room, in the canteen and everywhere else in the school, with the broom handle to carry their documents, place crosswise or on the seat as a shelf, the lecturers also raised their lecterns with it, the versatility knew no boundaries. «The school was dissolved, the carpenter moved to Berlin with the machine that had milled the prongs », says Jakob Bill, who also manages the «max, binia + jakob bill foundation» with his wife Chantal, continuing the story of the further fate of the Ulmer Hocker. The university stools were for the most part simply annexed by the students; they simply took «their» stool from the dissolution of the school, clever, because today they are the owners of a rare cultural asset.

Even if the Ulmer Hocker has being reissued for years under licence, it is not to be found in the whole Park Hyatt in Zurich,

but near the hotel in Bahnhofstrasse at number 47 there is a pavilion sculpture from Max Bill. It is built from 63 cuboids of the same size, another piece of evidence of Bill’s rational way of thinking and working. The studio house in Höngg, in which Bill lived until 1968, cannot be visited but only viewed from the outside; his home and studio house built in 1967 also stands unchanged in Zumikon. The «max, binia + jakob bill foundation» is currently working on digitalising the huge archive and in addition to the works from Max und Binia Bill also manages the works of Jakob Bill, the son, who embraces and focuses on his father’s artistic legacy. The works of David Bill (†2018), the only son of Jakob and Chantal Bills, are also on display. He bundled his expressive force into sculptures, which without a doubt represent a continuation of Bill’s genius.

DIE SCHWEIZ, EIN KUNSTVOLLES LAND Kaum ein anderes Land steht so im Zeichen der Kunst wie die Schweiz. Wenn auch klein und fein, überzeugen wir international als echte Kunstkuratorin. In kaum einem anderen Land gibt es beispielsweise mehr Museen pro Kopf und Galerien, Auktionen

sowie Messen sind dabei noch gar nicht einberechnet. Schon im 18. Jahrhundert kannte jeder Kunstliebende Menschen wie den Zürcher Johann Heinrich Füssli oder Böcklin, Anker und Hodler.

Und auch die zeitgenössischen Künstler erfreuen sich reger Beliebtheit.

Doch nicht nur in Galerien und Museen ist in der Schweiz Kunst gegenwärtig, auch bedeutende Häuser wie unter anderem das 5-Sterne-Hotel Park Hyatt Zürich lieben kunstvolles Interieur. Originale von Sol LeWitt, Heinz Mack, Serge Poliakoff, Ossip Zadkine, Günther Uecker und anderen schmücken die Räume. Dazu wurde bereits beim Bau auf ein ausgeklügeltes, von der Kunst beeinflusstes Design-Konzept gesetzt, bei dem Materialien wie Granit, Marmor und Kirschholz Urbanität und Natur vereinen. Und der extravagante Glasbau wurde von den renommierten Architekten Meili & Peter aus Zürich kreiert, der Innenausbau stammt von Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA) aus den USA.

Vor gut einem Jahr knackte die Stadt Basel die 200‘000 Einwohnermarke. Die Region Miami beheimatete zu diesem Zeitpunkt bereits mehr als die doppelte Anzahl an Menschen. Und dennoch ist es die grenznah gelegene Schweizer Metropole, die Städten wie Miami oder sogar Hongkong zeigt, wie es geht. Und zwar das mit der Kunst. Vor mehr als einem halben Jahrhundert lancierten drei Basler Galeristen zum ersten Mal die Kunstmesse ART Basel.

Damals zeigten 90 Galeristen Werke aus zehn Ländern, wie sich Farben in Bildern und Material in Skulpturen zusammenfügen lassen. Rund 16'000 Menschen folgten der Einladung und besuchten das Premiereevent.

MIAMI, EIN WINTERLICHES KUNSTVERGNÜGEN Und so international das Publikum an der Beethovenstrasse 21, so grenzüberschreitend ist mittlerweile die Art Basel, die ihr Debüt im Jahr 1970 erlebte. Mittlerweile trifft sich auf den drei Messen jedes Jahr das Who-is-Who der Kunstszene. Hunderte Galeristen, tausende Künstler und zehntausende Gäste – es wechseln Kunstwerke für viele Millionen den Besitzer und wahre Schätze lassen sich entdecken. Auf der diesjährigen Art Basel Miami Beach, die vom 5. bis 8. Dezember 2019 stattfindet, werden 260 Galerien aus 33 Ländern erwartet. Dazu wird die Messe erneut in die inspirierende Miami Art Week eingebettet, die zeitgleich ausgetragen wird.

Im Fokus auf der US-Version des Basel-Klassikers stehen zeitgenössische Bilder, Skulpturen, aber auch Filme von nord- wie südamerikanischen Künstlern. So werden zwar auch asiatische, afrikanische und europäische Werke ihren Platz finden, jedoch eher zurückhaltend. Je nach Standort wird den heimischen Kreativen entsprechend mehr Platz eingeräumt, erklärte einmal Marc

ART BASEL, EIN ANZIEHENDER ORT Wie auch in der Schweiz finden die Kunstinteressierten rund um das Miami Beach Convention Center, den Austragungsort, zahlreiche weitere kleine Highlights. Private Ausstellungen in heimischen Galerien, Parties und Life-Perfomances am Atlantikstrand, während das türkisfarbene Wasser in sanften Wellen den Sand umspielt. Bei dieser Idylle wundert es auch nicht, dass auch wieder zahlreiche bekannte Gesichter erwartet werden. So wurden auf der Art Basel Miami Beach schon die Schauspieler Hilary Schwank, Leonardo DiCaprio oder Sylvester Stallione gesichtet.

Wer übrigens als Künstler dabei sein will, der braucht unbedingt die Unterstützung seiner Galerie. Sie muss sich um den Platz auf der Messe kümmern, der nur auf Einladung erfolgt und von einem Gremium mittels Bewerbungsprozess entschieden wird.

Daher kann jeder Gast davon ausgehen, dass er wirklich die weltweite Kunstelite erleben darf.

MIAMI – AS ARTISTIC AS BASEL THE ART BASEL RANKS AS ONE OF THE MOST RENOWNED ART EXHIBITIONS IN THE WORLD. AND ITS „SPIN-OFFS“ IN THE USA AND ASIA ARE ALSO MECCAS FOR ALL ART ENTHUSIASTS. IN DECEMBER THEY ARE CONGREGATING AT MIAMI BEACH. Over a year ago the city of Basel exceeded 200,000 residents.

At this point the Miami area housed over double the number of people. And nevertheless the Swiss metropolitan city situated close to the border shows cities like Miami or even Hong Kong how it is done. Namely, through art. Over half a century ago three gallerists from Basel launched the art exhibition ART Basel for the first time. At the time 90 gallerists displayed works from ten countries, how colors can be merged in pictures and material in sculptures. Roughly 16,000 people accepted the invitation and visited the premiere event.

SWITZERLAND, AN ARTISTIC LAND Hardly any other country focuses so much on art as Switzerland. Even if it is only a small yet beautiful country, it still stands out internationally as a real art curator. There is barely another country, for example, with more museums per head and that’s not counting galleries, auctions and trade fairs. As early as the 18th century every art lover knew people such as Johann Heinrich Füssli from Zurich or Böcklin, Anker and Hodler. The contemporary artists also enjoy great popularity.

MIAMI, A WINTERY ART DELIGHT And while the public on Beethovenstrasse 21 is highly international, Art Basel, which made its debut in 1970, has become supranational. The who’s who of the art scene now meet each year at the three exhibitions. Hundreds of gallerists, thousands of artists and ten thousand guests – works of art change hands for several million and veritable treasures are discovered. At this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach, which is taking place from 5th until 8th December 2019, 260 galleries from 33 countries will be displaying their art. The exhibition will again be incorporated into the inspiring Miami Art Week, which will be held at the same time.

Contemporary pictures, sculptures, but also films from North and South American artists will be the focus of the US version of the Basel classic. Asian, African and European works will also be displayed, but more unobtrusively. Depending on the location the regional creative sector will be granted respectively more space, explained Marc Spiegler, Global Director of Art Basel. One reason why the exhibition is now at home on three continents.

ART BASEL, AN APPEALING LOCATION As in Switzerland, art lovers can find numerous other small highlights in the vicinity of the Miami Beach Convention Center, the event venue. For example, private exhibitions in local galleries, parties and live performances on the Atlantic beach, while the turquoise colored water embraces the sand in gentle waves.

Considering this idyllic location it is hardly surprising that a number of famous guests will be expected again. The actors Hilary Schwank, Leonardo DiCaprio or Sylvester Stallione have previously been spotted at Art Basel Miami Beach.

By the way, if you want to take part as an artist, it is mandatory that you have the support of your gallery. They arrange the place at the exhibition, which is by invitation only and decided by a panel using an application process. Therefore, every guest can assume that they are really experiencing the art elite from around the world.

However, Swiss art is not only present in galleries and museums, major establishments such as the 5-star Park Hyatt Zurich among others love artistic interiors. Originals from Sol LeWitt, Heinz Mack, Serge Poliakoff, Ossip Zadkine, Günther Uecker and others decorate the rooms. Even at the construction stage focus was placed on an elaborate design concept, influenced by art, in which materials such as granite, marble and cherry wood combine urbanity and nature. The extravagant glass construction was created by the renowned architects Meili & Peter from Zurich, the interior design is the work of Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA) from the USA.

Sehr gern sogar. Es war eine wunderschöne Zeichnung auf Holz von Gianfranco Ferroni, ein bedeutender italienischer Maler. Ich habe sie direkt von ihm erworben, mit meinem Ersparten, ich war damals fünfzehn.

Der Kunstmarkt entwickelt sich immer mehr in diese Richtung. Ich würde nicht sagen absurd, aber gewiss übertrieben. Solange es Interessenten gibt, die bereit sind, solche Summen für ein Gemälde zu bezahlen, solange wird es auch Preise in dieser Grössenordnung geben. Mir gefällt, dass es Menschen gibt, die lieber solche Summen für ein Kunstwerk als für eine Jacht ausgeben.

Welches Kunstwerk hat Ihren Verstand von Kunst nachhaltig geprägt?

Ich bin im Land von Caravaggio geboren. Schon als Kind faszinierten mich seine Skulpturen. Für mich ist Caravaggio der grossartigste Künstler überhaupt.

Wann ist ein Bild zu teuer?

Wenn der Preis die Qualität übersteigt. Bedauerlicherweise geht es in der Kunst heutzutage viel um Marketing und wenig um Technik. Gerade bei jungen Nachwuchskünstlern sehe ich reichlich Improvisation. Wichtige Galerien fördern Kritiker, die Sympathien für Werke hegen, die wenig Subs-

Haben Sie auch schon zu viel für ein Bild ausgegeben?

Nein, meine Stiftung ist sehr wachsam bezüglich Preis und Qualität.

Ein anderer Künstler, den Sie sehr schätzen: Andy Warhol. Was machen seine Werke so besonders?

Warhol war ein Genie. Exzentrisch und talentiert. Ich hatte das Vergnügen, ihn mehrmals zu treffen. Seine Werke sind im Laufe der Jahre bei Sammlern immer beliebter geworden. Wie kaum ein anderer verstand er es, Marketing für sein Schaffen zu betreiben. Aber dahinter lag viel Können.

Er hat die zeitgenössische Kunstszene stark geprägt. Die Idee der Factory war schlicht brillant und führte zu einer Reihe ähnlicher Projekte auf der ganzen Welt. Es ist bedauerlich, dass es keinen zweiten wie ihn gibt. Es bräuchte tausend Andy Warhols.

Gibt es ein Kunstwerk von ihm, das Sie noch unbedingt haben möchten?

Ich würde behaupten, ich besitze bereits seine interessantesten Werke und Relikte. Angefangen bei Michael Jacksons Gitarre, signiert vom Popstar und Warhol persönlich, über die Einladung an Marilyn Monroe zur Ausstellung der Castelli Galerie, bis zum Mao. Meine letzte Errungenschaft war ein lilafarbener elektrischer Stuhl, der 85ste von insgesamt 250 Exemplaren. Ein wunderschönes historisches Werk.

Ist es verwerflich, Kunst aus rein monetären Interessen zu sammeln, ohne Verständnis für ihre Schönheit?

Absolut, ja. Es ist mir unverständlich, wie man Kunst als blosse Handelsware betrachten kann. Ich erstehe und sammle lediglich Kunstwerke, die mich begeistern, die eine Geschichte erzählen.

Nie würde ich ein Gemälde in meinen Galerien ausstellen, das mir nicht gefällt oder keine Botschaft vermittelt.

Was sagen Sie zu Sigmund Freuds These: Sammler kompensieren Entbehrung, die sie als Kind durch fehlende Mutterliebe erlitten haben?

Ich verehre Sigmund Freud, ein grossartiger Denker, und natürlich hat er recht. Was mich jedoch betrifft, ist es reine Passion.

Ich bin mit Bildern unter meinem Bett aufgewachsen. Ich habe immer Kunst geatmet, es ist mir eingeimpft, verstehen Sie? Und darum liegt mir meine Stiftung so am Herzen, es geht mir darum, ein eigenes Museum zu schaffen, um die Kunst der jüngeren Generation näherzubringen, sie ihnen kostenfrei zur Verfügung zu stellen.

Man hat herausgefunden, dass kreative Menschen weniger aggressiv sind. Indem man jungen Menschen die Kunst näherbringt, bewegt man sie auch dazu, selber welche zu schaffen?

Ich sehe immer wieder so viele Kunstwerke und Gebäude, die ohne Achtung vor unserer Vergangenheit und Kultur von Vandalen zerstört wurden. Junge Menschen sind oft von den falschen Dingen abgelenkt, sie ziehen das Tablet einem Buch vor, gehen lieber ins Einkaufszentrum als ins Museum. Gerade deshalb sollten Museen für alle unter 21-Jährigen kostenfrei zugänglich sein.

Denn wer die Kunst versteht, bejaht das Leben, zumindest dessen Schönheit?

So ist es. Kunst ist Emotion, ist Leben. Es ist unsere Pflicht, sie zu lieben.

BUT HE WOULD STILL SAVE HIS FAMILY FIRST IN A HOUSE FIRE. „I AM NOT MATERIALISTIC.“, CLAIMS MAZZOLENI. AT WHAT POINT HE CONSIDERS A PICTURE TO BE TOO EXPENSIVE, WHAT MAKES WARHOL SUCH AN EXCEPTIONAL ARTIST AND WHY HIS PASSION FOR ART COLLECTION DOES NOT REPLACE A LACK OF MOTHERLY LOVE. Mr Mazzoleni, do you remember the first work of art that you purchased?

I remember it very well. It was a beautiful drawing on wood from Gianfranco Ferroni, a prominent Italian painter. I bought it directly from him, with my savings; I was fifteen at the time.

Sotheby’s grossed a record price of 157 million dollars last year for the painting „Nu couché “(to the left) from Amedeo Modigliani. Is that not absurd?

The art market is evolving more and more in this direction. I would not say absurd but certainly exaggerated. As long as there are interested parties willing to pay that sort of money for a painting, there will be prices of this magnitude. I like the fact that there are people who would rather pay these amounts of money for a piece of art than for a yacht.

When does a picture become too expensive?

When the price exceeds the quality. Unfortunately these days art is more about marketing and less about technique. I see an abundance of improvisation, in particular in the case of young artists. Major galleries are encouraging critics, who feel an affinity to works that have little substance. A good balance is important. The quality should justify the price.

Have you ever paid too much for a picture?

No, my foundation is extremely vigilant with regards to price and quality.

Which piece of art shaped your understanding of art in the long term?

I was born in Caravaggio’s country. Even as a child I was fascinated by his sculptures. In my opinion Caravaggio is the greatest artist of all.

Another artist who you hold in high regard: Andy Warhol. What makes his work so special?

Warhol was a genius. Eccentric and talented. I had the pleasure of meeting him on several occasions. His works have become increasingly popular for collectors over the years. More than anyone else he understood how to make marketing work for his creations. But that required a lot of skill. He strongly influenced the contemporary art scene. The idea of the factory was simply brilliant and led to a series of similar projects throughout the whole world. It is unfortunate that he was a one-off. The world needs a thousand Andy Warhols.

Is there still one piece of his art that you simply have to have?

I would claim to already have his most interesting works and relicts. Starting with Michael Jackson‘s guitar, signed by the pop star and Warhol personally, to the invitation sent to Marilyn Monroe for the exhibition at Castelli's gallery, through to Mao. My last acquisition was a purple coloured electric chair, the 85th from a total of 250 copies. A beautiful, historical work.

Is it objectionable to collect art for purely financial interests, without understanding its beauty?

Yes, absolutely. I cannot understand how someone can view art as merely a commodity. I only purchase and collect art works that thrill me and that tell a story. I would never exhibit a painting in my gallery, which I don’t like or that does not convey a message.

What do you say to Sigmund Freud‘s theory: Collectors are compensating for the deprivation they suffered as a child due to a lack of maternal love?

I admire Sigmund Freud, a great thinker, and of course he was right. For my part I can only say that it is pure passion. I grew up with pictures under my bed. I always lived and breathed art, it has been implanted in me, do you understand? And for this reason my foundation means so much to me, it is about creating my own museum to give the younger generation an understanding of art, to make it available to them free-ofcharge.

It has been proven that creative people are less aggressive. If we give young people an understanding of art, can we impel them to create art themselves?

I constantly see so many pieces of art and buildings that have been destroyed by vandals without any respect for our past and culture. Young people are often distracted by the wrong things, they prefer a tablet to a book, would rather go to the shopping centre than to a museum. That’s exactly why museums should be free-of-charge for all those under 21 years of age.

Because if you understand art, you affirm life, at least its beauty?

Exactly. Art is emotion, it is life. It is our duty to love it.

JUBILÄUM DAS ZURICH FILM FESTIVAL UND CATERING-PARTNER PARK HYATT ZÜRICH FEIERN 15-JÄHRIGES BESTEHEN – MIT WHISTLEBLOWERN, UMWELTAKTIVISTEN UND HOCHKARÄTIGEN STARS.

Mit über 170 Filmen aus 58 Ländern lockte das Zurich Film Festival auch in diesem Jahr in die Kinosäle und erzielte mit 117‘000 Besuchern einen stolzen Rekord. Den Auftakt machte Niklaus Hilbers Epos BRUNO MANSER – DIE STIMME DES REGENWALDES. Die unter schwersten Bedingungen entstandene Produktion wurde in Anwesenheit von über 700 geladenen Gästen, darunter Darsteller Sven Schelker, Elizabeth Ballang und Nick Kelesau, mit tosendem Beifall und Standing Ovations gefeiert. Mit einem Budget von 6 Millionen Franken ist das Werk um den verschollenen Basler Umweltaktivisten eine der grössten Schweizer Produktionen der vergangenen Jahre und glänzte als Gallionsfigur der grünen Welle des ZFF. Neben vielen Spielfilmen, darunter Weltpremieren, wurden zahlreiche Dokumentarfilme gezeigt, die erschüttern und faszinieren. So wurde auch Tribut an Whistleblo-

wer gezollt, die mit Mut und Engagement zu einer besseren, freieren Welt beitragen. Zu den begrüssten Stars der Branche zählten unter vielen Javier Bardem, Cate Blanchett, Kristen Stewart, Julie Delpy, Donald Sutherland, Roland Emmerich und Oliver Stone. Ersterer stellte seine in der Antarktis gedrehte berührende Dokumentation SANCTUARY vor, in der es um die Errichtung des weltweit grössten Meeresschutzgebietes geht. Letzterer trat als Jurypräsident auf und verschaffte mit THE PUTIN INTERVIEWS einmalige Einblicke in den Kreml. Für die Gründer und Teilhaber Nadja Schildknecht und Karl Spoerri war es das letzte Festival in dieser Funktion. Sie werden sich ab dem kommenden Jahr als Co-Direktoren weiter für das ZFF engagieren. ANNIVERSARY THE ZURICH FILM FESTIVAL AND CATERING PARTNER PARK HYATT ZURICH CELEBRATE THEIR 15TH ANNIVERSARY – WITH WHISTLEBLOWERS, ECO-WARRIORS AND HIGH-RANKING STARS. This year again the Zurich Film Festival enticed its guests into the cinemas, offering over 170 films from 58 countries and achieved a new record with 117,000 visitors. It kicked off with Niklaus Hilber‘s epic BRUNO MANSER – DIE STIMME DES REGENWALDES. The production which was made under the most difficult conditions was greeted with thunderous applause and standing ovations in the presence of over 700 invited guests, including actors Sven Schelker, Elizabeth Ballang and Nick Kelesau. The work deals with the story of the missing environmentalist from

Basel and with a budget of 6 million Francs is one of the largest Swiss productions of the past years, shining as a figurehead for the green wave at the ZFF. In addition to a number of feature films, including world premieres, numerous documentaries were shown, which shocked and mesmerized. They paid tribute to whistleblowers, who contribute to a better, more free world with their courage and commitment. The Festival welcomed a number of stars from the branch including Javier Bardem, Cate Blanchett, Kristen Stewart, Julie Delpy, Donald Sutherland, Roland Emmerich and Oliver Stone. The former presented his moving documentary SANCTUARY filmed in Antarctica, which deals with the construction of the world’s largest marine reserve. The latter appeared as the jury president and provided unique insights into the Kremlin in THE PUTIN INTERVIEWS. This was the last Festival for the founders and joint partners Nadja Schildknecht and Karl Spoerri in their present function. Starting from next year they will be involved as co-directors for the ZFF. The artistic direction has been given to Christian Jungen. Park Hyatt Zurich sends best wishes on this anniversary and is looking forward to the future.
