Welcome to steamboat

T

ucked in the mountains of Northwest Colorado is a special town that embraces the pioneering spirit of the Old West. Here the picturesque downtown and creative district are bordered by the remarkable natural beauty of the Yampa River and more than 150 mineral springs. Over the years, Steamboat Springs has developed an extraordinary history in which skiing and Olympian heritage connect to our long-held agricultural traditions. Steamboat is also the cultural and recreational hub of rural Northwestern Colorado. Steamboat residents have embraced arts, culture and learning since the town’s beginning. Even before Steamboat was incorporated, the community founded a public library, chartered a public school, and cultivated the arts.

Courtesy Steamboat Springs Arts Council

Lulie Crawford, daughter of the town’s founder, was our first musician, writer and painter. Beginning in 1914, summer students from across the nation traveled to Steamboat to attend the legendary Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp, the oldest continuous operation of its type in the United States. Our beloved historic train depot, home of the Steamboat Springs Arts Council, has offered arts and cultural programming since 1972. Dedication to the arts and learning still thrives through the town’s art galleries, concerts, performances, library, museums and schools. A long history of arts and culture meets ranching and skiing heritage here. Visitors from all over the world come to Steamboat Springs for the variety of recreational, artistic and cultural pursuits set in an awe-inspiring natural setting. about the cover Artist

michelle ideus

M

ixed media artist Michelle Ideus includes collaged words in many of her pieces, but putting her pieces into words? That’s a much more difficult task. “Coming up with titles is the hardest part of what I do,” she says, and it’s easy to see why. Ideus invokes depth, perspective and movement using a combination of photography, paint and collage materials – a technique she seems to use more effectively with each piece she finishes. “Jazz Twist,” the title of this edition of the Yampa Valley Arts and Gallery Guide’s cover art, embodies the spirit of Ideus’ painting in two short words. The colors: dark and smoky. The composition: eclectic, energetic. You can almost hear a faint jazz tune when you look at it – a “twist” on a classic Steamboat Springs aspen image.

“Jazz Twist” portrays a grove of aspens near the Steamboat Springs Cemetery, which has made an appearance in several other pieces of Michelle’s work. “I like to really study something before I paint it,” she says.

Ideus’ art style has taken many turns since she first started – beginning as an oil painter at Colorado State University, but switching to acrylic paint to avoid the “toxic” smell of oil and gradually incorporating elements of collage and photography into her work. She was drawn to mixed media because of the level of texture, dimension, boldness and contrast that it allowed her to work with. “There’s definitely a lot of fun in collecting the mixed media collage pieces too,” she says.

Michelle Ideus

Ideus stacks the collage pieces that she finds on paper plates around her studio, organizing them by color. She then incorporates the pieces into her art based on color schemes, as well as the “energy” of the current piece she’s working on. Ideus says her mixed media fascination began as a simple experiment: she created 20 small mixed media tiles to test the waters of the art form. She began creating more ambitious mixed media pieces and recalls her excitement when she sold her first two at Art on the Mountain. “Selling those first two pieces really helped me get my career off the ground,” she recounts. “I really started to feel that the world was my oyster.” Despite the success she has experienced with her current art style, Ideus continues to explore artistically. Her forthcoming projects employ iPhone photography with apps that add custom filters to each picture, which she then uses as a foundation for her collage and paint work. “Some filters add pops of light, some add more texture, and some randomize all of the filters,” she says. “To me, I’ve always been about layers of paint, and now I’ve started being able to get into layers of thoughts and ideas.”

Ideus’ work can be viewed at the Center for Visual Arts, where she normally has three to six pieces on display at a time. Yampa Valley Arts & Gallery Guide • 3

Young at Art The

Steamboat Springs Arts Council's Young at Art Creativity Camps have inspired and trained thousands of youths since 1980. Young at Art weeklong creativity sessions focus on self-expression, communication and creative problem solving. We offer half-day and full-day creativity camps in collaboration with local artisans and educators. In 2016, we have an outstanding summer of camps providing creative learning to our rural mountain community, including photography, printmaking, creative writing, comedy, dance and world music. Encouraging self-expression through art that is based on exploration allows for unique results. Our Young at Art teachers weave self-expression into their lesson plans. To value self-expression is to value one’s own unique voice. We can’t think of a more powerful life skill to instill in the Yampa Valley’s young people. Our Young at Art Creativity classes create a chorus of individual voices and, through thoughtful planning, impart to each participant the experience of knowing and expressing his or her own voice and respecting the individual voices of others.

This screening of the 15 award-winning films from this year's 4th annual Film Fest stretches from Steamboat Springs to the Front Range, and to Miami, Florida. The maximum film length is 10 minutes, and most are only a few minutes long, but you will be impressed and amazed at the creativity and production value that today's top high school filmmakers bring to the screen. The festival was created by the Steamboat Springs Film Committee and is also sponsored by the Colorado Office of Film and Television Media.
