The Grand Marshalls for the 60th Annual Saint Jo Rodeo Parade are Noble Coker and Jack Coker. Since this year's event is dedicated to our Western Heritage and Tradition, it is only proper that these two men are recognized. Both men were involved in the early days of the Saint Jo Rodeo. The Saint Jo Riding Club was organized by Weldon Dennis, whose dream of having a local riding club, became reality in 1957 and the rest is history. In 1958, the first Saint Jo Rodeo was hosted by our Riding Club and produced by stock contractor, Adrian Parker of Saint Jo. Noble Coker, who worked for Parker, was the pick up man at our very first rodeo. For many years, Parker employed Noble as a wrangler and his pick up man for all of the rodeos he produced. Not only did they produce their hometown rodeo, but many others such as the Cowboy Reunion in Stamford- which were two of Noble's favorites. The rodeo circuit kept Noble busy and on the road during the season. In the off-season, Noble was employed by N.L. Flusche for many years driving a truck and hauling feed. In the early days, the Saint Jo Riding Club under the leadership of President O.K. Williams, purchased a bus for the members to ride to the rodeos and parades. T.J. Parks, who worked for Williams, always drove the bus and Noble hauled the horses for Norbert Flusche Trucking. Later, Noble worked for Bill Jones for a year breaking horses and then he broke horses for hire. The last horse he was hired to break was a mare named Breeze and was owned by Robert Owens. In 1979, Noble married the love of his life-Corinne and slowed down on his “rodeoin”. He really enjoyed the time he spent travelling with his late wife and considers the time he had with her some of the happiest years of his life. Also involved in the early days of the Saint Jo Rodeo was Jack Coker, Noble's younger brother. Jack, his wife and family were active within the club, and he often assisted his brother as pick up man for the rodeos. Jack also rode bareback broncs and on one occasion, while showing his boys how to ride a bronc, he sustained a serious injury-tearing the muscles away from the bone in his forearm. Stories of Jack and his jumping mule “Penny” continue to circulate today. Jack frequently entered “Penny” in “mule jumping” competitions. Penny won every competition in which she was entered, with her highest jump being 6 feet. Noble and Jack always ran cattle and ranched. Jack is eleven years younger than his big brother and looked up to Noble as a father figure. For 35 years, Noble had 800 acres at Illinois Bend where he ran his cattle operation and his hay production. He and Jack also fed cattle for the commercial feed lot. Since Jack was employed full-time with Cooke County Electric CO-OP for 45 years, Noble was his ranch manager and took care of the day to day operations. Ranching is still the way of life for the Coker brothers. They embrace their rich heritage and have cherished memories from their years of ranching and rodeoing. Noble and Jack were always “cowboys” and if somethin' needed to be caught, they could get 'er done! 4

The 60th Annual Saint Jo Rodeo is dedicated to and in recognition of our Western Heritage. Texas became a state in 1845 and just a few years later in 1849, Ithane and Prince Singletary settled near the headwaters of the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. What became known as “Head of Elm”, would become the first town established in what is now Montague County. Their search for gold here proved unsuccessful and they moved away for a short time, but returned to Head of Elm in 1851. The settlement grew and in the late 1860's, some of the settlers arriving included the following pioneer families: Boggess, Meador, Pedigo, Field, Bellah, Chancey, Phillips, and Howell. From the mid to late 1860's, Head of Elm was the last stop in Texas for the many herds of cattle being driven up the trails to Kansas. In 1873, the name of the town and the post office was changed to Saint Jo. There were a number of homes, a general store, and a couple of saloons. No story of the American West would be complete without including the legacy of the “cowboy”. The Stonewall Saloon, long considered the first permanent structure built in Saint Jo, was established in 1873 to meet the needs of the cattle drovers that were passing through on the cattle trails. Cowboys and cattle played an important role in early Saint Jo history and continue to do so even today. The Stonewall Saloon is now a museum that is full of local Saint Jo history and memorabilia from the early days of the community. The museum is currently showcasing a “Chisholm Trail” exhibit in honor of the 150th Anniversary of the famous cattle trail. The “western way of life” was important to Saint Jo from the beginning and continues to be so - even today. The Saint Jo Riding Club was established in 1957, with the first rodeo held in 1958, and in the early years, their monthly meetings were held at the Stonewall Saloon. Members of the Saint Jo Riding Club made quite an impressive sight at parades and grand entries- with more than 40 members lined up to perfection-dressed in their white shirts, green ties, leather chaps, matching tack and carrying flags. They brought home hundreds of parade trophies (mostly 1st place) while traveling across North Texas and Oklahoma. The Saint Jo Riding Club has always been dedicated to preserving our western lifestyle and the legacy of the cowboy and the cowgirl. In Celebration of our Western Heritage, the 150th Chisholm Trail Anniversary and 60 years of Saint Jo RodeoThe Saint Jo Riding Club welcomes you to our rodeo and to our town and is so very proud that this “Tradition Lives On”.

The Saint Jo Riding Club was organized by Weldon Dennis in 1957, with the first Saint Jo Rodeo held in 1958. This bold and enthusiastic venture, which most people would hesitate to begin, has been an annual Saint Jo “tradition” now for 60 years. The first President was Weldon Dennis; Vice President was Charles Dennis; Secretary/Treasurer was Starr Mann; and Bobby Tuggle (Noah Pitman's granddaughter) was the first Sweetheart. During their first year the Saint Jo Riding Club participated in many parades, but only brought home one 3rd place trophy. Mack Thweatt was the next President in those early years of getting the club organized. He was followed by F. C. Galmor, who served for two years as President. For that first rodeo, the crowd sat and watched from the hillside. Much progress took place from the very beginning, and in 1960, the first rodeo arena was built. Throughout the years, the entire Saint Jo community and the surrounding areas have cooperated in enlarging and improving the present Saint Jo Riding Club Arena and all of its facilities. In the early years, a concession stand was added but it was 1987 before city water was run down to the arena. In July of 1998, the concrete pavilion was added around the concession stand. This rodeo arena stands as a symbol to the loyalty, good will, hard work, dedication and community spirit that existed then and continues on today. The Saint Jo Riding Club has earned hundreds of trophies through the years. You can sees our rodeo legacy and our rich history by visiting the Historic Saint Jo Square. Some of these trophies, awards, and memorabilia are displayed at The Museum of the Stonewall Saloon and at Trailtown Treasures. O. K. (Kurz) Williams followed Galmor as Riding Club President and served as President from1962 until 1975. Craig Lawson served as President from 1976 to 1984. Charles Dennis was President from 1985 to 1994. Eli Casey was elected as President for 1995 and 1996. In 1997, Charles Dennis was again elected as President and served until 2003. Ancil Thurman was President from 2003 to 2007. Eli Casey was elected as President from 2007 to 2011. Nancee Turlington was elected and served from 2011 to 2013. Randall Flusche was President from 2013-2015. Sarah Hess, took office in 2015 and is the current President of the Saint Jo Riding Club.

2016 Saint Jo Rodeo Queen Welcome to the 60th Annual Saint Jo Rodeo! I am Kincaid Johnson, your 2016 Saint Jo Rodeo Queen. I have been a member of the Saint Jo Riding Club since I was five years old when I won the 2006 Saint Jo Rodeo Queen Title. I was also the 2011 Saint Jo Rodeo Junior Queen. I am so proud to have come full circle, ten years later, to hold the title of 2016 Saint Jo Rodeo Queen. I am 16 years old and the daughter of Phillip and Stacey Ward of Nocona, Texas and Garrett and Savana Johnson of Forestburg, Texas. I will be a junior at Prairie Valley High School this fall and am on the academic honor roll. I held the office of sophomore class secretary and was sophomore class favorite. My extracurricular activities include basketball, volleyball, track, cross country, cheerleading, Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), National Honor Society (NHS), FFA, Montague County 4-H Horse Club, Prairie Valley 4-H, and Saint Jo Riding Club. During my reign as queen I have represented in 19 nights of rodeo, including the Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo and Fort Worth Stock Show All Western Parade. One of my favorite experiences was speaking to a group of children at the Oklahoma Baptist Home for Children in Oklahoma City about not giving up on dreams when obstacles arise. I also shared one of my favorite scriptures with them. I believe that being a leader and a role model to children is one of the most important legacies I can leave. During my reign, I have volunteered at the 2016 and 2017 Montague County Cowboy Church Cow Camp, 2016 Child Welfare Board Child’s Fair, and North Texas Ranch Roundup to benefit North Texas Rehab. I have carried Old Glory proudly while representing Saint Jo at the Nocona Bull Fest, Prairie Valley FCCLA Benefit Ranch Rodeo, and Saint Jo’s Chisholm Trail Ranch Roundup. I would personally like to thank Saint Jo Riding Club, Debbie Poynor, Evelyn Gregory, and Nancee Turlington for all of your hard work and believing in the queen’s contest. I would like to thank Derrick Morse and the whole Rednecks with Paychecks crew for your support of our rodeo and the youth in the area. Princess Kaycee Jo and Junior Queen Kelsey, you are both beautiful. Remember to always keep smilin’! To the 2017 Saint Jo Rodeo Queen and all others after, remember that earning the crown lasts a lifetime, not just this weekend. Remember who you are and what you stand for.

34
