62nd Annual Saint Jo Rodeo is Dedicated to Wendell Thompson The Saint Jo Riding Club is honored to announce that the 2019 Saint Jo Rodeo is dedicated to Wendell Thompson (1946-2019). Wendell spent many years being an active part of the Saint Jo Rodeo. His uncle was OK Williams, a founding member of the Saint Jo Riding Club. Wendell rode with the club during his teenage years. Many years later, he was asked if he would like to “time” the events during the 2-day rodeo, and he accepted the job. For the next 15+ years he could be seen sitting in the press box timing rodeo events. He loved the rodeo, and he enjoyed getting to visit with his fellow timekeepers and friends, Jerry Raymond and Danny Reaves. Wendell grew up in the Saint Jo area and lived there all of his life. His family had a farm in Dye Mound, Texas, and he attended Saint Jo ISD, graduating in 1963. He always had a horse growing up and enjoyed riding as a young man. He passed on the tradition of riding to all of his kids, but especially to his son, Kyle. Kyle enjoyed riding in playdays, trail riding and also rode in the grand entry of the Saint Jo Rodeo for many years. Wendell enjoyed just watching the horses in the pasture. In fact, he kept Kyle’s horses at home for the last 20 years just so they can graze and enjoy the good life. Wendell was an active part of the Saint Jo community all of his life. He was a member of the Saint Jo Volunteer Fire Department for many years, even serving as chief for a couple of years. He served on the Saint Jo ISD school board as well. Wendell leaves behind a wonderful legacy and he will be missed by all who knew him.
The Saint Jo Riding Club was organized by Weldon Dennis in 1957, with the first Saint Jo Rodeo held in 1958. This bold and enthusiastic venture, which most people would hesitate to begin, has been an annual Saint Jo “tradition” now for 60 years. The first President was Weldon Dennis; Vice President was Charles Dennis; Secretary/Treasurer was Starr Mann; and Bobby Tuggle (Noah Pitman's granddaughter) was the first Sweetheart. During their first year the Saint Jo Riding Club participated in many parades, but only brought home one 3rd place trophy. Mack Thweatt was the next President in those early years of getting the club organized. He was followed by F. C. Galmor, who served for two years as President. For that first rodeo, the crowd sat and watched from the hillside. Much progress took place from the very beginning, and in 1960, the first rodeo arena was built. Throughout the years, the entire Saint Jo community and the surrounding areas have cooperated in enlarging and improving the present Saint Jo Riding Club Arena and all of its facilities. In the early years, a concession stand was added but it was 1987 before city water was run down to the arena. In July of 1998, the concrete pavilion was added around the concession stand. This rodeo arena stands as a symbol to the loyalty, good will, hard work, dedication and community spirit that existed then and continues on today. The Saint Jo Riding Club has earned hundreds of trophies through the years. You can sees our rodeo legacy and our rich history by visiting the Historic Saint Jo Square. Some of these trophies, awards, and memorabilia are displayed at The Museum of the Stonewall Saloon and at Trailtown Treasures. O. K. (Kurz) Williams followed Galmor as Riding Club President and served as President from1962 until 1975. Craig Lawson served as President from 1976 to 1984. Charles Dennis was President from 1985 to 1994. Eli Casey was elected as President for 1995 and 1996. In 1997, Charles Dennis was again elected as President and served until 2003. Ancil Thurman was President from 2003 to 2007. Eli Casey was elected as President from 2007 to 2011. Nancee Turlington was elected and served from 2011 to 2013. Randall Flusche was President from 2013-2015. Sarah Hess, took office in 2015 and is the current President of the Saint Jo Riding Club.
The success of our organization is made possible by the continued support of YOU, our community, our neighbors, and our sponsors. We take great pride in awarding local high school seniors academic scholarships. We award more money than any other riding club in our area. We want to preserve the sport of rodeo as well as encourage others to give back. We truly appreciate your support, whether it’s donations, sponsorship or admittance to our rodeo performances. We want you to know that your money is truly helping others. Thank you!
The Saint Jo Riding Club
The Saint Jo Riding Club would like to thank the Saint Jo Volunteer Fire Department and EMS for their commitment and dedication to providing the highest quality fire, rescue, and emergency medical services to our community and the surrounding areas.

2018 Saint Jo Rodeo Queen Kylie is a 22-year old native resident of Moore, OK. Her love for horses and animals is strong, but she is also equally passionate about a career in public relations. Kylie’s ultimate goals are to earn her bachelor’s degree, work non-profit missions and help provide medical care to third world countries. Kylie spent her early years coming up through the ranks in junior rodeos, junior high and high school rodeos. When she wasn’t entered, you could still find her at a rodeo riding with one of two National Champion Drill Teams, and she still currently rides with a rodeo production team. Kylie contributes her travels and western background to helping shape her into the woman she is today by teaching her responsibility, dedication and a true appreciation for hard work. She recently competed in the Miss Rodeo Oklahoma Scholarship Pageant where she won the categories of appearance, congeniality, horsemanship, speech, and written test. Kylie is currently the “Lady In Waiting” and will assume the crown as Miss Rodeo Oklahoma for the state of Oklahoma starting January 1, 2020. Later in 2020 she will represent Oklahoma in the Miss Rodeo America Pageant in Las Vegas, NV. She would like to wish all of the contestants at the Saint Jo Rodeo Queen pageant the best of luck! Remember that with or without a crown on your head, your voice is important!
Kalli Reed is the 13-year old daughter of Damon and Tara Reed of Rosston, TX. Kalli is an honor roll student as well as a track champion, but her passion lies in rodeo. Her love for her horses and rodeo has led her to travel and compete in youth and open rodeos all over Texas and Oklahoma. Kalli most recently competed in the National Little Britches Finals Rodeo where she qualified in four events, made it to the short go, and even squeezed in time for the royalty contest where she won the horsemanship division. Kalli is very passionate about teaching others about the sport of rodeo and the western lifestyle and is very thankful for the many opportunities that being a rodeo queen has provided for her to share her voice. Kalli would like to wish all of the 2019 Saint Jo Rodeo Queen Contestants Good Luck. Remember that you are beautiful and can do big things!
Atalee Baird is the 6-year old daughter of Kendel and Brett Baird of Alvord, Texas. Atalee will be in the first grade at Alvord Elementary this coming school year. Atalee won first place at the Muenster Chamber of Commerce Christmas parade as well as the Fantasy of Lights Christmas Parade in Bowie. Atalee bought and collected toys to donate to the Rednecks with Paychecks Toy Drive. Atalee participated in the Nocona Mardi Gras Parade. On rodeo day at school Atalee was proud to wear her belt buckle to talk about her experience of riding in rodeos and being a rodeo princess. Atalee wants to wish this years contestants good luck! 35
