È conosciuta anche come Torre di Passannante per aver ospitato, quando era bagno penale, l’anarchico che attentò alla vita di re Umberto I. It is also known as Passannante’s tower because the anarchist of that name was imprisoned there after his attempt on the life of King Umberto I.
La torre ottagonale svolse la funzione di avvistamento e di magazzino fi no alla seconda metà del Settecento, epoca in cui fu trasformata in prigione, funzione rimasta fi no all’apertura nel tardo ‘800 del più ampio carcere all’interno del Forte Longone di Porto Azzurro. Tra le fi gure più note incarcerate all’interno della torre si ricordano, oltre all’anarchico Giovanni Passannante, l’antifascista Sandro Pertini.
The octagonal tower was used for look-out and storage purposes until the second half of the 18th Century, when it was converted into a prison, a function it retained until the opening, towards the end of the 19th Century, of the larger prison in Forte Longone at Porto Azzurro. The most famous prisoners held there include the anarchist Giovanni Passannante and, for a short time, Sandro Pertini, the opponent of the Fascist regime who was to become President of Italy in later years..
