Le miniere di Calamita devono il loro nome dalla magnetite, minerale di ferro presente in abbondanza. Per secoli sono state la più grande fonte di lavoro per le popolazioni elbane. Dopo secoli di sfruttamento, nel 1980 l’attività produttiva è stata sospesa. Per scoprire l’affascinante e antica storia del ferro e ripercorrere il faticoso lavoro dei cavatori è possibile effettuare una visita guidata alle miniera di Calamita e a quelle del Ginevro.
The name of the mines, “Calamita”, is the Italian word for “magnet”, after magnetite, an iron ore plentiful in the area. For centuries, these mines were the main source of employment for Elba’s people. All mining fi nally came to an end in 1980s. Guided tours of the Calamita and Ginevro Mines offer a fascinating insight into the long history of iron production and the back-breaking work of the miners.
