The tourbillion, a rotating frame that counters the effects of gravity on accuracy

NEW TRENDS: of machine intervention are wiped away during this completely manual process that relies on knowledge of centuries-old techniques and on specific tools. Sometimes a boxwood pad and a lathe are used to decorate the surfaces of some of the larger parts with a pattern of straight lines or circles. Côtes de Genève, as found in Chopard’s L.U.C. GMT watch, for example, is just such a pattern. The care taken in finishing the parts of a movement is manifold in purpose: Aesthetically, the various brushing and chamfering techniques provide different patterns, textures and levels of reflective light; pragmatically, the finish is far less likely to corrode than it would be if left untreated; and abstractly, taking such an extreme degree of care in crafting parts that will never be seen is a reflection of the pride of artisanship, and it contributes to the ongoing sense of freemasonry among the artisans. According to the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie, the process also “guarantees technical perfection, for no one would devote hours to polishing, engraving and embellishing an imperfect part.” Lastly, the watchmaker meticulously connects the various finished parts into a smoothly functional movement.

the dial A sheet of gold, silver or copper riveted with pins typically forms the base of the watch face, or dial. The watchmaker decorates the face with straight or circular lines cut into the metal, each only several tenths of a millimeter wide, in a very old process called “guillochage.” He then uses a diamondedged instrument to drill a hole for the “arbours” of the hands, and applies Arabic or Roman numerals, if any, to the face.

the case The watchcase includes its back, middle, bezel and crystal covering. The middle is cut from a block; the back, from a sheet of gold or steel. The parts are heat-treated, soldered together, cleaned with ultrasound, burnished and then polished or satin-finished. After engraving the back and setting a sapphire crystal into the bezel, the case is ready to be fitted with the watch’s movement.

U N U S U A L C O M P L I C AT I O N S A N D S P E C I A LT Y M O V E M E N T S Connoisseurs at the latest round of fine-watch conventions showed increased interest in tourbillions, notes William George Shuster, senior editor of JCK-Jewelers Circular Keystone. Nearly 100 brands debuted new watches with tourbillions in 2006, according to Shuster. Other popular complications include retrograde, multiple time zones and GMT, in which a separate hand notes world time on a 24-hour clock. Especially noteworthy in this are Chopard’s L.U.C. collection, Ernst Benz’s Chronoflite GMT, David Yurman’s Belmont GMT and Ebel’s 46 mm Classic Hexagon GMT. Another new development in the mechanical-watch world has been a recent concentration on creating house-specific, specialized movements. Ebel’s new 1911 BTR Perpetual Calendar chronograph, for instance, boasts Caliber 137, a specialty movement with 322 parts. It was awarded the 2007 Special Technical Prize by German watch magazine Uhren. Bulgari, too, has introduced a specialty movement in its Diagono Professional Scuba watch, which also boasts multiple-time-zone and GMT complications. Wyler Genève, whose major preoccupation is shock absorbance — in accordance with the house’s overall positioning as the “fine automobile” of the high-end watch market — has tinkered with the organs of the movement in its Chronograph to create a shock-protection system that includes at its heart the proprietary and shock-resistant Incaflex balance wheel. In essence, the system operates just an auto’s shock absorbers do.

WYLER

BVLGARI

complications As we’ve seen, every fine watch undergoes an incredibly refined process to create its movement. Some watches require still another level of craftsmanship in creating a “complication”— a watch function that does anything other than relay the hours, minutes and seconds, such as a calendar, timezone indicator or tourbillion, a rotating frame that counters the effects of gravity on accuracy. Watches that combine two or more complications, such as Cartier’s Tortue model with perpetual calendar and two time zones, are known as grande complication watches. Only master watchmakers, who typically spend several months assembling just one watch by hand, are sufficiently apprenticed to be able to create these.

WED

The next time you admire a particularly beautiful mechanical watch, you’ll be able to marvel still more at the patience and skill required to craft this marriage of engineering and art.

INDY RACING LEAGUE

RUBBER MEETS STEEL AS WATCHMAKERS BORROW THEMES FROM THE DASHING WORLD OF AUTO RACING BY SARA CHURCHVILLE

A new generation of watches offers the best of Old World style and craftsmanship coupled with modern materials and techniques. Chic, sporty and designed by the most respected watch houses, these timepieces offer remarkable new possibilities in the pairing of rubber and stainless steel.

The watches are well designed, feature painstaking construction and offer the look of the moment: a large dial, often with a busy face, showing the date or the time in different zones. They evoke the rubber-meets-the-road thrill of the sports car, an exciting image that especially appeals to men.

sporting life In its watch lines, the esteemed jeweler Cartier has incorporated several design elements with this dashing appeal. Among the most indicative timepieces are Cartier’s yacht-ready Pasha Seatimer, with its rubber watchband and stainlesssteel dial, and its Santos 100, which features a rubber dial. Ebel also suits the man heading to sea or any other adventure with its Sportswave Aquatica men’s watch, a rubber-strapped timepiece with brushedsteel case and plenty of complications. CARTIER

time

THE CRAFTING OF A FINE WATCH BY SARA CHURCHVILLE Time may wait for no man, as the saying goes, but any man or woman will wait for time, especially as measured out by the loftily precise hands of a fine watch. All watches traffic in the rather mundane business of dispensing the moments, but only a watch made in the painstaking manner of centuries of received craftsmanship truly transcends time to enter the realm of the sublimely timeless. We can superficially appreciate the beauty of these watches at first glance, but it’s in understanding exactly what goes into making them that their true magic is revealed. CHOPARD

the design There are no afterthoughts, no last-minute decisions in fine watchmaking. Every element of the final watch has been imagined in the design stage, including which jewels will be used and where they will be placed — a gemologist and a designer work together to decide which size, color, cut and setting of a stone to use — what kind of movement the watch will need, what the strap will be made of and how the dial will be decorated. The finished watch design is modeled as a 3-D computer image so that it can be viewed from all angles by each artisan in the chain. While we typically imagine a single watchmaker laboring over the details of each watch, in fact several dozen people are part of the team, working on everything from 3-D modeling to satin-finishing. The watch image is then separated into the hundreds of parts that eventually compose the final product, and each of these parts is itself modeled to create what’s known as a “file” for the coming watch. A simple mechanical watch typically has about 130 individual parts.

the movement A watch’s movement includes anything that is not the face, hands or back. Watchmaking engineers and micromachinists use delicate digital instruments to create the prototype for each movement, which can be composed of hundreds of tiny parts, some sculpted from metal or shaped with lasers. Each basic form is minutely shaped, grooved and contoured, sometimes by machine, to fit with its attendant parts. At each stage of the process, however, everything is hand-inspected. Today’s watches, especially those with tourbillions, are sometimes “skeletonized,” or crafted with a transparent sapphire crystal case back that shows off the precise craftsmanship. Most movements, however, are never seen. The extraordinary thing about fine watchmaking is that the same level of care and finish is afforded to a boldface movement as to one that will be hidden for a lifetime. The painstaking process “guarantees technical perfection, for no one would devote hours to polishing, engraving and embellishing an imperfect part.” — Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie MAURICE LACROIX

Each fragment of the movement is polished, brushed, stippled, satin-finished or, in some cases, engraved. Each screw is flame-fired; each edge is beveled, or chamfered, as it’s known in fine watchmaking. All traces

Chopard plays on the racing theme with its Gran Turismo and Mille Miglia men’s watches. In addition to the rubber-and-steel construction of the watch itself, the Mille Miglia is available with a strap resembling racing-tire treads. And the line includes the Jacky Ickx Edition, named after the legendary Formula 1 driver and six-time Le Mans champion.

But the rubber-and-steel pairing isn’t just a guy thing. Stylish women also love it, especially when it comes in colors, as with Chopard’s Happy Sport watch: three corner diamonds set in a silver face surrounded by a red rubber-coated bezel in a stainless steel case. Onboard or on the town, designer watches made from the pairing of rubber and steel provide a new option that is both sensible and eminently stylish.

Auto racing is a proud tradition for Wyler Genève, which notes that its newest chronograph “takes its cues from the world of the motor car.” Introduced at the 2007 Baselworld exposition of new timepieces, the Wyler Chronograph has a crown of stainless steel covered in grooved rubber, and its strap is rubber as well.

[ connoisseur ] bulgari Originally born in the 1940s, the Bulgari Bulgari collection found its full expression in the 1970s, introducing the double logo engraved on the bezel. Since then, the use of the logo as an intrinsic element of design has become a trend followed by the entire luxury segment. The new version features bracelets — harmonious combinations of over 100 components — hand-finished with satin or polished treatments. Sophisticated alligator straps have been refined by the new three-blade déployante buckle, with the round clasp matching the bezel.

cartier Since it was founded in Paris in 1847, the House of Cartier, the leading brand in the luxury goods market, has been identified with quality, prestige and history, and has served as crown jeweler to 19 royal houses. Cartier occupies a unique position in the creation of fine jewelry, timepieces, fragrances and accessories. With over 250 boutiques on five continents and one of the most exclusive distributor networks in the world, Cartier continues to build on its unique craftsmanship and commitment to excellence.

ebel chopard... Quality and creativity are hallmarks of Chopard, the internationally known luxury watch and jewelry firm founded by Louis-Ulysse Chopard in 1860. Chopard continues to produce highprecision watches and precious-stone jewelry through a skillful mix of innovative design, high technology and traditional craftsmanship.

Highly contemporary, eminently masculine and mechanically sophisticated, the Ebel 1911 BTR Automatic Chronograph sports a bold 44.5mm stainless-steel case with rubber features, along with vivid red and black accents, complemented by a supple, hand-sewn alligator strap with red top-stitching. It is powered by the COSC-certified, proprietary Ebel Automatic Chronograph Caliber 137 movement. Uhren Magazine, the renowned German watch periodical, and Focus, the famous business magazine, recently awarded Ebel the Special Technical Prize for its in-house Caliber 137.

wyler... Inspired by founder Paul Wyler’s desire to produce the most robust watches possible, the limited-edition Wyler Genève Chronograph has a triple protection system. Its sprung case with a sandwich construction leaves the movement suspended, allowing it to absorb shocks. A crown lock, unique in the world of watchmaking, protects the crown against shocks. Finally, the incaflex balance wheel, invented by Wyler in 1927, ensures optimum shock protection within the movement itself.

maurice lacroix Maurice Lacroix stands for decades of experience in the production of high-quality watches, introducing its first watch in 1975 in Austria. Throughout the brand’s history, one thing has remained the same: an awareness of a long watchmaking tradition of skilled craftsmanship and passion supported by love for design and perfection and the use of exclusive materials. The brand is particularly proud of the crown jewels of its collections: the mechanical watches of its Masterpiece Collection. Lacroix’s precision is also incorporated into classic collections such as Pontos, Miros, Les Classiques and Divina.

why you should buy

Top-quality watches like this are within anyone’s reach, with duty-free shopping.

BY ROBIN LEACH

a short history of time Timepieces have evolved considerably since the first-known wristwatch was presented to Queen Elizabeth I of England in 1570. Over the years, craftspeople have turned watchmaking into an art form; a contemporary designer watch is not only a practical accessory but is also a collector’s item. When in port, you will be making a solid investment when you choose a timepiece by prestigious brands such as Ernst Benz, Maurice Lacroix, Longines and Ritmo Mundo. These watches are worn by socialites, rockers and other celebrities, and their enduring appeal gives them great value as family heirlooms.

modern classics These days, there is a demand for designer watches at all price points. Companies such as TAG Heuer, ESQ Swiss, Movado and Seiko provide a range of designs that suit varying tastes and budgets, generally appealing to a younger, sportier crowd yet still providing an excellent product both in craftsmanship and service. For example, the Perpetual Calendar watch from Seiko adjusts the month and date automatically, set to stay Full-grain leather asaccurate even through yearsthe up to sists in leap softening the year 2100. writing surface. But reliable timekeeping isn’t the only thing that consumers are looking for in a watch. Philip Stein TESLAR watches use technology to protect the wearer from the potentially harmful effects of electromagnetic signals emitted by cell phones, computers and other electronic equipment. The high-tech approach is common in today’s timekeeping, with popular functions including altimeters, thermometers, barometers, wind meters, compasses and solar-power capabilities — not to mention world-timer alarms and radio-controlled time-zone adjustments, to keep the world traveler on track no matter the destination.

Dreaming of diamonds? Craving Cartier? Passionate about pearls? The shops in your ports of call are the place to go for designer jewelry and watches. You will find the famous names that carry with them a guarantee of style, quality and luxury. And are you

jewelry as art

The exquisite pieces you’ll find in the ports of call are as inspired and detailed as any work of art. Take Judith Ripka designs, for instance. Award-winning designer Judith Ripka was taught by her mother to see beauty in all the little things in life, and she transferred that ability into her own line of 18k gold jewelry nearly 30 years ago. Each of her jewelry pieces is designed to complement the others. Though the brand has grown tremendously, Ripka often works side by side with clients to create new designs. This fusion of jewelry and art means that each bracelet, ring, pendant or pair of earrings is not just an accessory, but is an extension of one’s personality and an individual statement of style.

a gem of an idea When gemstones from around the world are artfully woven together with precious metals, the result is unparalleled beauty. The luster of pearls, the brilliance of diamonds and the rainbow colors of tanzanite will make splendid reminders of your cruise vacation. Or perhaps you might like to treat the one you love to the iridescent quality of ammolite, the mercurial splendor of alexandrite or the playful sparkle of pink sapphires.

the call of duty-free

Now that we have whetted your appetite for the best in designer jewelry and watches, you need to know why it’s a good idea to act now instead of waiting until you’re home. The reason is simple: During your cruise, you can shop duty-free.

Shopping duty-free means that you don’t have to pay the duty, or tax, that U.S. Customs and Border Protection places on any product imported into the country. The savings can be 10 to 50 percent off the regular prices charged in the United States. You’ll also save an additional 5 to 10 percent, because there is no sales tax. These savings can make a huge difference when purchasing a high-ticket item.

ERNST BENZ

The bigger the savings, the bigger your token of enduring love can be.

It is also worth remembering that because of the high number of people visiting the shopping ports, store owners can demand big volume discounts from their suppliers. These savings are passed on to you, the buyer.

Samsonite, which has been in the luggage business for nearly a century, recommends packing according to your destination — guided by not only the weather and the climate, but also by local customs and surroundings. No one wants to traipse around cobblestoned streets in high heels because she forgot her sneakers, Samsonite reminds us. And if you’re planning to visit religious sites where discreet clothing may be required, be sure to have something besides shorts and a T-shirt. Tumi, maker of prestige luggage, business cases and executive accessories, has even more tips: •

Make a list of clothes, toiletries and documents so you don’t forget anything. Keep one copy of your passport at home and one in your suitcase.

Always double-check weather forecasts for your destination.

Bring fewer clothes, shoes and jewelry than you think you need. Bring more socks and underwear than you think you need.

Work around color themes so you can mix and match. Accessorize so you can wear key items more than once. A shawl, for example, can be used several ways: as a wrap, a skirt or a scarf. For men, a casual jacket can be worn during the day and dressed up with a tie or other accessories for evening wear.

Put undergarments and accessories in large plastic zip or mesh laundry bags so they are easy to find.

Put the clothes you will need first on top.

If you are checking your luggage (which could get lost or delayed), put a change of essential clothing, toiletries and medication in your carry-on.

For longer or leisure trips, take a small bag or backpack for going poolside, carrying souvenirs or stowing laundry.

If you didn’t get it all right this time, file away these tips for your next trip.

Nicole Kidman’s sense of style made her a standout at the 2007 Academy Awards, where she presented the Oscar for Best Art Direction.

[ celebrity profile ]

nicole kidman portrait of a leading lady A REVEALING LOOK AT THE WOMAN BEHIND THE HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR BY CHRISTOPHER STARK 46

[ celebrity profile ] Nicole Kidman Kidm recently celebrated her 40th birthday, and to say she looks as young as ever hardly does justice just ju th to her classic blonde (and sometimes strawberry-blonde) beauty, heightened by that ittel flawless alabaster skin and those piercing periwinkle-blue eyes. The Academy ademy Aw exquisitely Awardning g sstar, who grew up in Australia, wears her fame and success with a style e and eleg winning elegance that rec recall the golden days of Hollywood. Her life hasn’t always been easy, but she’s met e every challenge with dignity while pushing herself to take risks that have only made her stronger.

“You’ve got to be brave and be willing to lose it all,” Kidman says. “Success breeds fear and you just have to be able to walk away from it. I’m learning to appreciate the moment. Otherwise, you’re always waiting for the moment to start.”

from star to icon Kidman first captured the attention of audiences in the 1989 Aussie thriller Dead Calm, but it was a starring role one year later in Days of Thunder opposite Tom Cruise that changed her life. She married her hugely famous co-star that same year and committed herself to being a wife and mother to their two adopted children. Their abrupt divorce in 2001 made worldwide headlines and left a devastated Kidman trying to put her life back together. Looking back, she says, “You don’t choose the people you fall in love with. I didn’t understand that I’d married a Hollywood superstar. For the first few years of our marriage, my personality was defined in relation to his success. People tell you, ‘Don’t get married too young.’ Now, I look back and think that there’s some truth to it.” Kidman, however, was hardly overshadowed by the Cruise phenomenon. Long before she surprised audiences as she sang and danced in Moulin Rouge! or won an Oscar for her tortured portrayal of novelist Virginia Woolf in The Hours, her sense of haute couture made her a standout in public. The aura of glamour that surrounded her was never greater than when she wore a brilliantly showstopping Christian Dior gown to the Academy Awards 10 years ago; Kidman still remembers it as her all-time favorite. But she has also been stunning in creations from a host of renowned designers including Christian Lacroix, Jean Paul Gaultier, Isaac Mizrahi and Prada.

Of becoming a fashion icon, the over-5-foot-10-inch, model-thin actress says, “If you look at designers as visionaries, they can inspire you, let you dream.”

“She’s that rarest of creatures, a fully engaged, fearless actress who is also a movie star, yet she carries her humanness more visibly and more radiantly than most of us are able to do.” — Michael Cunningham, author of the novel that became The Hours , for which Kidman won the Academy Award for Best Actress 47

Kidman, in this smoldering scene from The Invasion (2007), long ago proved she is much more than just another Hollywood beauty.

Australia, where her pale skin kept her indoors and out of the harsh sun. “Anytime I tried to tan, I’d get beet-red and peel,” she remembers, “and I still use a lot of sunblock.” (That’s one of the few secrets to staying beautiful that she’s divulged.) “While everyone else was at the beach, I’d be at home reading books. It sustained me because I imagined I was one of the characters in the novel. I could become somebody else and that’s what I wanted desperately.” Her determination to perfect her craft has not waned despite her wealth and success, Kidman says: “In a strange

way, it has saved my life because it has given me the chance to express things that I wouldn’t have had the chance to express in any other way. But I still grapple with my fear of being able to deliver. More than once I’ve been certain I had to quit just before I started a movie.”

Hugh Jackman, her co-star in Australia “When she acts, it’s like she’s bungee-jumping. She just dives off and goes for it. Most of the time she flies, and when she doesn’t, she’s always given her all.”

Anthony Hopkins, her co-star in The Human Stain “She doesn’t take herself too seriously, and so many people do in this business. She’s a lot of fun.” Baz Luhrman, who directed her in Moulin Rouge! and Australia “She is a fabulous actor and an iconic movie star. so often, their relationship seemed headed in a serious direction. But it was another performer, hard-living country superstar Keith Urban — an Aussie himself, although born in New Zealand — who made her his wife, after a low-key courtship. Inhabiting a character is what moves her.” Michael Cunningham, author of the novel The Hours, which became the film for which Kidman took home the Oscar for Best Actress “She’s that rarest of creatures, a fully engaged fearless actress who is also a movie star, yet she carries her humanness more visibly and more radiantly than most of us are able to do.”

You don’t see too many women over forty playing lead roles in American movies. But Nicole has an incredible talent and I think enough inner qualities to survive.” Joel Schumacher, who directed her in Batman Forever “You meet a lot of beautiful people in this business, but there’s something almost luminous about her. She’s also very down-to-earth. She’s a downtown girl in an uptown body.” Anthony Minghella, who wrote her acclaimed film Cold Mountain “She’s got a great appetite for work and a laugh like a hyena.”

• BATMAN FOREVER (1995) She manages to hold her own while sharing the screen with the ever-sexy George Clooney (and his form-fitting bat suit). • THE PORTRAIT OF A LADY (1996) In the adaptation of the late-19th-century Henry James novel, she’s the American wife whose relentless good cheer is destroyed by her monstrous British husband. • EYES WIDE SHUT (1999) Loved by some, hated by others, it’s her last performance with Tom Cruise in the epic directed by Stanley Kubrick, which took forever to film. • MOULIN ROUGE! I’m trying to give them an education out of being with me that is very artistic. They’re very adaptable because they’ve spent their whole lives traveling.”

know your place BY DANIELLE COHEN No matter your milieu, there is no substitute for good table manners. While exhibiting proper behavior can impress, displaying ignorance might not only embarrass you but could also insult your host. However, dining among ladies and gents need not be a stressful ordeal. Just follow these table tips from manners maven Peggy Post, in Emily Post’s Etiquette (17th edition, 2004), and you will be well on your way to dining gracefully.

napkin know-how Place your napkin in your lap as soon as you sit down to dine, keeping it folded in half at all times. Dab your lips throughout the meal; never wipe. To excuse yourself from the table during the meal and at its conclusion, lay your napkin in loose folds to the left of your plate.

• •

Do pass food counterclockwise.

When dining formally or in a business setting, do wait to start eating until everyone else has been served or until your host or hostess invites you to begin.

• •

Do not season food before tasting it.

Do not dine with elbows on the table, or sit hunched over your plate.

Do not cut food into more than two bite-size pieces at a time.

Do use your knife or a piece of bread — not your fingers — to ease food onto your fork. Do absorb gravy/sauce with a bread morsel speared on your fork.

Do not chew with your mouth open, talk with your mouth full or drink while chewing.

Do not leave the table without saying, “Excuse me.”

Do serve yourself from every offered dish.

Do not reach across your neighbors for anything; do politely ask for items to be passed to you.

your bread and butter Select one whole slice of bread from the basket; do not tear off a piece and return the remainder. To take butter from the communal stick, use your butter knife to scoop a small piece and then smear it onto the edge of your bread plate. Break one or two smaller pieces of bread at a time, butter each piece individually while it remains on your plate (not suspended in the air), and then consume it piecemeal. Do not take the last slice without first offering it to your dining companions.

the blueprint for a formal place setting •

Utensils are placed in the order of use, from the outside in, toward the plate. Forks are placed to the left of the plate; knives and spoons are placed to the right.

• •

Everything should be set in a geometrical pattern.

The charger/service plate rests under the plate through the first courses; it is removed upon the entrée’s arrival.

The butter plate is above your forks to the left of the place setting, with the butter knife resting diagonally on top of it.

Unless salad is served first, the salad fork is placed closest to the plate on the diner’s left; the largest fork, the dinner fork, is next on the left. Finally comes the fish fork, which is the first used.

The salad knife is placed closest to the dinner plate on the right, with the dinner knife next on the right, followed by the fish knife.

The soup and fruit spoons, if used, are to the right of the knives, followed by the oyster fork further on the right.

Red or white wine and sherry glasses stand directly above the knives; behind them is the water goblet with the champagne glass, if used, to the right.

No more than three of any utensil should be placed on the table at once. Supplementary implements are brought with their respective courses.

Do not place your flatware on the table after use; position implements diagonally on the edge of your plate so the tips of the knife and fork point to the plate’s center in an inverted V, signaling that you are not finished with your course. Indicate that your plate may be removed by laying your knife and fork side by side, diagonally, on your plate. They should be placed as though at the 4:20 position of a clock, with the tips facing inward.

[ living style ] decorating in a flash Adding carpeting to a room no longer has to mean spending weeks ripping up old fl oor coverings and installing new ones. Area and throw rugs make it possible to revamp a room in seconds, perking up a tired look or creating a whole new one — not to mention covering up ugly nicks and scratches in tile or wood. Color is a key element in deciding what carpet to put down, and today there are more choices in hue than ever before, especially with improvements in stainresistance. If you want a white carpet, you don’t have to cancel all your dinner parties until the kids are grown. Environmental colors such as blues, deep greens, rosy quartz and stony neutrals are becoming increasingly popular. And neutral doesn’t have to mean beige: The palette now includes soft greens, pale yellows and shades of blue. A carpet can be one of the easiest ways to make a room truly yours, refl ecting your taste and mood — no matter how often they change.

CONSIDERING COLOR

A warm-hued rug like this one can heat up cool décor.

roll out the

red carpet for your guests

The online resource FlooringGuide.com and the Carpet and Rug Institute offer this advice on color selection: • Don’t go for an exact match with wall paint or upholstery; the room will appear too rigid. Darker or lighter shades give the room variation and definition. • Liven things up with a solid-colored, textured fabric — also great for today’s active, more-casual lifestyles. • Choose a color that unites all the elements of the room. Use a common color from the drapes or furniture, or go with a similar hue. • Consider the room’s lighting and size. Lighter colors make a small room seem more spacious, while darker shades add coziness. Warm colors can thaw a chilly room; cool greens and blues have a calming effect.

WANT TO GIVE YOUR GUESTS THE STAR TREATMENT? YOU CAN CHANGE THE ENTIRE LOOK AND FEEL OF A ROOM JUST BY CHANGING THE CARPET, WHETHER YOU WANT BOLD COLOR OR SOFT NEUTRALS WITH A TOUCH OF PIZZAZZ. BY SHANE TURNER Today’s distinctive textures and patterns are pushing carpets and rugs to center stage in home design. No longer just a neutral backdrop for furnishings and other details, floor coverings are taking a star turn of their own. It helps that some real stars, including former supermodels Cindy Crawford and Kathy Ireland, are adding their names to home-décor lines in which rugs are prominent. Their collections feature vibrantly colored and richly textured fl oor coverings; Ireland has even taken a cue from the American folk art of quilting to create visually stunning rugs that turn the fl oor into what she calls “the fi fth wall” of a room.

Fortunately, it’s easy to find your favorite fragrance in shower gels, moisturizers and other products that lend themselves to layering. Here are three goodies to get you going:

Délices de Cartier Eau Fruitée: fresh and fruity, with spicy tones from accords of jasmine and amber Chanel Chance Eau Fraîche: a floral with a light, fresh scent that keeps it from becoming too strong when layered. Guerlain My Insolence: seductive and earthy yet vibrant, the latest edition of the smash-hit scent represented by Academy Awardwinning actress Hilary Swank

something to build on Layering is the use of several products of the same scent to create a lasting effect throughout the day or night. It doesn’t mean simply pouring on more perfume or cologne to beat the odds that the smell will fade. (That’s probably why you had to hold your breath in the elevator when that oversweetened guy got on last week.) Just as the name implies, it’s a matter of laying a foundation on which to build your unforgettable aromatic presence. Construction begins in the bath. This is key to the final effect, because dry skin isn’t good at retaining scent. Bathe or shower with a scented soap or gel containing your chosen fragrance, and follow with moisturizer. Many skincare experts suggest applying moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp. Set the fragrance with a touch of powder and finish up with an all-over spray of eau de toilette or cologne — but not perfume, which is much stronger than cologne or toilette and can overpower when used with other layers. It should be applied on its own, to the pulse points. Build wisely, and fragrance layering is a ritual that’s sure to get under your skin.

[ luxe style | get your face on ] daytime: light, lively and lovely It’s high noon. The sun is bright and you’re out and about: splashing in the pool, reading on deck, stretching mind and body in a yoga class, or just luxuriating with a spa massage. Your makeup should match your active day as well as your cute sundress and new sandals. Sheer, neutral shades will enhance your healthy natural glow. And the new crop of weightless, transparent makeup appears effortlessly polished. Try a liquid tint, which adds color without building up. Keep things light on your lips as well with a rosy lip gloss — a classic daytime look. The best are not too sticky and have added sun protection.

the eyes have it Daytime eye drama can be yours in a snap. One: Brighten up with a quick concealer. Two: Subtly emphasize eye color with a mauve-y brown shadow. Three: Brush up with mascara (but don’t forget to curl first, for a winsome, wide-eyed look).

evening: time to shine Kick up your high heels with an easy, glamorous beauty look. Shimmer and sparkle are extra-magical on a cruise, but don’t go overboard: Focus shine on just one feature: lips, eyes, cheeks or décolletage. Sleek and smooth is the modern way to take your hair. Get Euro-style shine with a hair glosser, then pluck a flower from your stateroom bouquet and pin it in front of your ear. Another way to go: Keep your mane braided or twisted during the day, and then let it out for soft, sexy waves at night. Daytime loveliness or evening glamour — either way, it’s a snap.

SHEER ELEGANCE FIRM FOUNDATION CHANEL

Perfect skin has no chance against thick, matte foundations that feel and look like paint. Lose the liquid and use a light powder such as Guerlain Parure compact foundation, a sheer concoction that brings light to the complexion and kisses the cheeks with velvety color. For truly golden glamour, add the shimmer of real 24k gold flakes with Guerlain L’Or.

EYES WIDE OPEN Seductive looks come in smart packages courtesy of Guerlain Ombre Eclat, a trio of shadows and liner to embellish eyes night and day. Eyes pop with the aid of two powder shades, one light and one dark, while a creamy liner shapes and defines. A sponge applicator and beveled brush applicator make it easier than ever to create eye-catching glamour. And it all comes in a vibrant case designed by Hervé Van Der Straeten.

LASH OUT Lashes get volume, length, curl and definition with Chanel’s new Inimitable Waterproof mascara, which comes with an elastomer brush for impeccable grooming. Pro-vitamin B5 reinforces the lashes, and a mineral-wax formula with emulsifiers and fiber polymers makes the mascara unbeatably waterproof — not just in the swimming pool but against humidity, heat and even tears. Inimitable comes in four luminous shades — black, bronze, navy and emerald — using pigments that make the eyes look bigger than ever. For added depth, team it with Chanel’s Stylo Yeux Waterproof Eyeliner, a budge-proof, smudge-proof formulation in a variety of shades. It retracts into an integrated sharpener for perfectly sharp results every time.

Guerlain serves a menu of delicious lip colors, from subtle shades of beige to flamboyant copper. Not to mention red — a true red at last. But don’t dare pucker and paint without the aid of KissKiss Liplift, a smoothing primer that not only evens out texture but actually plumps the lips.

FORECAST: SUNNY AND WARM The latest bronzers and self-tanners make it even easier to get a natural-looking glow without the burn — even for guys who want to look sunned, not scorched. Guerlain’s enhancements to its hit Terracotta Collection include a spray-on bronzing powder and Blush & Sun for cheeks. The line also reaches out to men with an amazingly natural new shade for its Ultra Matt bronzing powder. Chanel’s facial self-tanner, Soleil Identité, doesn’t just make you look healthy and tanned; it’s great for your skin as well. It’s rated at SPF 8 and is formulated with white-lily extract to hydrate and brighten. And with two shades, Golden and Bronze, it gives you even more say in how sunny you want to look. Bring out beautiful eyes with Guerlain’s Ombre Eclat, a trio of eye shadows and liner.

BY KAREN TINA HARRISON You’re finally here onboard, and your mirror reflects your happy glow. You can keep it going with some skincare savvy from dermatologist Dr. Diane Baker of Portland, Oregon, 2007 president of the American Academy of Dermatology.

combat the climate Whatever the weather, be ready! Sunny and Humid (Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, Panama Canal) In this climate, Baker says, “dry skin will bloom, but oily and combination complexions may go into overdrive and break out. Keep your face scrupulously clean and switch to a lighter moisturizer.” When it’s sweaty out there, Baker recommends “tinted moisturizing lotion with SPF15 or higher, which hydrates, protects and evens out skin tone in one step.” “Try one of the new bronzing sticks instead of letting your legs tan,” she counsels. “It’s sexier in the long run.” Sunny and Dry (Mediterranean, Baja California) Baker warns that “this climate will dry out your skin. Sunscreen in oil or lotion form will help hydrate it. And slathering on body lotion right after you shower seals in the moisture.” “The air-conditioning in your cabin can be drying as well,” she says. “Go for a rich night cream, and don’t forget your eye area.” “Try to choose the table or the chaise with the umbrella,” Baker advises. “Whenever you can, cover up with tightly woven apparel, and check out the new sun-protective clothing with SPF right in the fabric.”

go with the flow Your body may need a little time to adjust to your cruise routine. “Pre-vacation stress and flying may have left you dehydrated and sleep-deprived, which show up as dry skin and under-eye circles,” Baker says. “Keep drinking tons of water, catch up on your sleep and go easy on the alcohol at first.”

be sun-smart Pack up some memories, some photos and some choice purchases, but don’t take home a sunburn. “It’s so easy to get a burn that has the potential to turn risky down the road,” says Baker. “There is such a thing as safe sun exposure. The key is protection.” In a word, that means sunscreen: “broad-spectrum to combat both UVA and UVB rays with at least SPF15,” Baker says. “The critical thing is not the SPF factor but reapplying it at least every two hours. And don’t forget your neck, ears and feet, and use an SPF lip balm.” Baker feels that “spray sunscreen is easy to use, especially for men and kids.”

Protect your scalp and your hair with a chic scarf or hat, and rinse after pool swimming. “Now’s the time for gentler shampoos and deep-conditioners,” she says. Sunny and Breezy (Alaska, Atlantic Canada, Norway) Guard against windburn by wearing moisturizer or thick-textured protective balms. Northern light can be hard on your eyes. “Keep those sunglasses with you,” Baker urges. “The temp may be cool, but that sun is strong,” she says. “And UVB burning rays go right through clouds. So keep working that sunscreen. Don’t leave your stateroom without it!”

SELF-DEFENSE TOOLS FOR SKIN Pick up these essentials in the fight against aging – and make them your long-term strategy

SUCCESS AT LAST You may be relaxing, but there’s never a day off for Guerlain Success Future, a richly formulated skin-firmer and wrinkle-minimizer. Representing a major advance by Guerlain Research, Success Future combines two remarkable elements: tensotrophin, a key molecule that controls the basic mechanism of skin aging; and pure amber extract, putting into action all the revitalizing properties that the precious jewel has accumulated over thousands of years. Success Future also offers SPF15, for important sun protection. Clinical tests show immediate and significant smoothing of skin texture and wrinkles within 28 days of beginning treatment. This gem of a product comes in stunning jewel-like jars that uphold Guerlain’s tradition of exquisite packaging. The first such creations by a jewelry designer, the Success Future containers were designed by the renowned Hélène Courtaigne Delalande. She chose materials and colors as though they were actual jewels, and fashioned them as though cutting and polishing fine stones. The result is an elegant package that belies the serious nature of the product’s work. GUERLAIN

TAKE COMFORT There’s nothing like wrapping yourself in a snuggly comforter to ward off harsh weather. Skin gets the same protection from the elements with Chanel Hydramax+, a comfort cream that pampers even the driest skin. This exceptional serum’s active ingredients are derived from the plant world: samphire and butterfly lavender extracts to moisturize and nourish; sodium hyaluronate and sugar derivatives to continually boost hydration; shea butter, rich in essential fatty acids to preserve skin’s suppleness; and a biotechnical yeast extract to preserve the skin’s function as a barrier against impurities. And for an extra-healthy glow, Hydramax+ Teinte – in Sable shade for light skin and Bronze for olive and tanned – adds a touch of pigment for sheer radiance. Hydramax is one of a range of products from Chanel Précision, a line inspired by Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, legendary designer and founder of the company. Chanel created fashions that emphasized and enhanced a woman’s form – just as Précision enhances the very skin she is in. CHANEL

Play your cards right and bet on a good time.

making her mark Born in Los Angeles and raised in rural British Columbia, Canada, Tilly began acting as a teenager and later headed for Hollywood, where her distinctive voice and exotic looks helped her win appearances on a slew of TV shows in the 1980s, including Hill Street Blues, Cheers and Moonlighting. Her breakthrough film role was in The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989); she was nominated for an Oscar for her hilarious turn as a hopelessly untalented actress in Woody Allen’s Bullets Over Broadway (1994). Tilly then alternated between big studio films including Liar Liar, in which she co-starred with Jim Carrey, and independent projects such as the erotic thriller Bound. Tilly has also been in demand for her vocal work, in the Child’s Play horror films (voicing killer doll Tiffany) as well as in the TV show Family Guy and the movies Monsters, Inc.; Stuart Little; and Disney’s The Haunted Mansion.

romance in the cards Poker became another passion for Tilly in the early 1990s; she would often practice during down time on film sets. Then, at a celebrity invitational event, a chance encounter with top poker pro Phil Laak gained her a mentor as well as a boyfriend. One of the game’s most cerebral players, Laak taught her the deeper complexities of the game; but “I’d actually been dating him almost eight months before he deemed me ready to set foot inside an actual casino,” she says. By then, Tilly was more than ready. In 2005, she outlasted 600 other players to win her World Series of Poker bracelet — not to mention a cool $158,625 — in the Ladies’ No-Limit Texas Hold ’Em event. At the 2006 WSOP, she finished in the money in two events. Movie star Jennifer Tilly holds all the chips in her elite poker career.

While numerous Hollywood celebrities have become serious about poker, Jennifer Tilly is in a league of her own. The Academy Award-nominated actress has become a formidable force on the professional circuit and boasts the poker world’s ultimate trophy: a World Series of Poker championship bracelet. She is so passionate about the game that she put her acting career on hold so she could focus on becoming an elite player. “I want to see if I can become a great poker player, not a dabbler,” she says. “I don’t want to just be ‘good for an actress’ or ‘good for a girl.’ I’m competing against people who spend 40 to 60 hours a week in the casino, so to step up to their level I have to put in the hours.”

Today, the couple compete constantly on the international tournament circuit. “This year alone, I’ve been to Paris, Monte Carlo, Nassau, Dublin, Romania, London and all over the United States.” As for the difference between building her career in Hollywood and achieving her rapid ascent in the poker world, Tilly says: “With acting, you have to wait for someone to give you a great role in a great movie to show what you can do. With poker, anybody can sit down at a table and match wits with the best players.”

WATCH OUT: ANTONIO “THE MAGICIAN” ESFANDIARI MAY MAKE YOUR CHIPS DISAPPEAR Although Antonio Esfandiari is one of the hottest players on the professional poker circuit, he doesn’t refer to himself as a gambler. “I’m a calculated risk taker,” he says. “I don’t bet if I don’t think I have an edge.” Few players today can claim an edge over this 28-year-old card shark, who boasts a World Series of Poker championship bracelet and career tournament winnings exceeding $2.7 million.

THE MAGICIAN’S TO P F I V E P O K E R T I P S Antonio Esfandiari takes pity on those who may one day face him at the gaming table, and offers this expert advice:

A professional magician and expert poker player, Antonio Esfandiari can not only pick your card during a magic trick — he can also pick your wallet during a poker tournament.

Born in Iran, Esfandiari grew up in San Jose, California, and became fascinated by magic as a teenager. The budding professional magician discovered another form of card play, No Limit Hold ’Em, when he tagged along with his roommate to a California card room. Applying the same intense focus to learning poker as he did with magic, Esfandiari became a dominant cash-game player and eventually amassed a big-enough bankroll to enter the World Series of Poker’s main event in Las Vegas. Though he failed to score in his first WSOP, Esfandiari entered his first World Poker Tour tournament in 2002 and placed third. His timing was perfect; poker’s popularity was soaring, as the WPT was televising its tournaments and turning the game’s elite players into celebrities. Adopting the moniker “The Magician,” Esfandiari became one of poker’s most popular personalities when, in 2004, he won the WPT’s L.A. Poker Classic and the WSOP’s Pot Limit Hold ’Em event. While continuing to compete in high-stakes tournaments, Esfandiari has starred on the gambling-themed television show I Bet You with his friend and fellow poker superstar, Phil Laak. “I’m the luckiest guy in the world,” he says. “Life is short and I want to live it as good, and as hard, as I can.”

1. Always fold when you know you’re beat. So many times in Hold ’Em, a player knows his hand is no good and proceeds to call anyway. You’ve got to have the discipline to throw away those hands. 2. Never go on tilt. Even some of the great players have tilt issues: They lose a big hand and start playing terribly, playing hands they know they shouldn’t and making bad calls. Whenever you feel yourself tilting in any way, shape or form, get up and walk away from the table. 3. Play within your comfort zone. Depending on the size of your bankroll, you should know what limits you are comfortable with. If your bankroll is just $10,000, don’t play in a game where you can lose $3,000 in one session. 4. Learn as much as possible. Read books, watch the great players, and pay attention at the table whether you’re in the hand or not. There’s so much to learn by watching how other people play their hands. 5. Have fun. So many players sit there like boring stiffs all night long, never saying a word. Chat it up a bit, talk to people, crack jokes. I say you should always make the best of any situation — especially at the poker table.

THE TIMEPIECE YOU WEAR

CHANGES WITH THE OCCASION AND EVEN YOUR MOOD

BY SARA CHURCHVILLE

A sporty watch for a sporty afternoon — and chances are this guy will slip into something more elegant tonight.

Gone are the days when one watch had to carry its wearer through both his working week and his Sunday rest. The d i z z y i n g va r i e t y o f we l l - d e s i g n e d wa tc h e s m e a n s t h a t these days, a timepiece is just that: a piece of artistry that reflects the mood not just of a moment in time, but of a moment of the day.

Just as shoes and jewels change with the occasion, so do watches. Here we’ve chosen four possible mix-and-match moods; though one person’s “minimal” is another’s “limelighted,” they offer a starting point for assembling your own watch wardrobe.

96

ESQ SWISS

In recognition of this shift in wearer awareness, some watchmakers even offer a range of colors and styles of watchband, to be interchanged on a whim with a single watchcase. With the preponderance of interesting watch faces, and watchbands that are organically fused with the case, discerning watch buyers can take this concept further by changing their watches as they would jewelry or shoes.

[ watches | trends ] minimal This is the white-cotton shirt of the watch wardrobe: fresh, indispensable, versatile and easily dressed up or down. Elegance goes without saying, and deceptively simple design makes a timeless statement. These watches are often reintroduced after decades, when the beauty of their design has become sufficiently retro to attract appreciative young buyers.

MOVADO

Movado’s unisex Museum watch is possibly the apotheosis of this concept of watch face as design; the signature simplicity of a single dot at 12 o’clock on an otherwise empty black canvas has become a classic. The latest unisex update of the design is the Series 800, with its oversize dial, thermoresin strap and PVD (physical vapor deposition) coating to enhance performance; the design, though, has been elaborated upon to reflect the current penchant for sporty, functional (or at least functional-looking) pieces. The women’s Amorosa, with its silver mirrored face on a diamond-dusted stainless steel bangle, still hews to the original blank façade. Chopard’s Happy Spirit, too, offers a version of the coolly unembellished face with concentric circles of 18k white gold that round up gradually from the band to a single, randomly placed diamond in the face.

whimsical As carefree and fun as a Pucci scarf, this watch mood exults in the unexpected. A few cases in point: Glam Rock’s Cruise Line collection, with its fancifully colored silicon bands; and Ritmo Mundo’s new Hercules line, in which the move toward ever-larger cases is exaggerated into a 52mm bezel and the pieces come in flamboyant color juxtapositions such as a parrot-green face and strap with a yellow bezel and yellow numerals.

Just as the once-humble sneaker has come into its own as an essential, to be thoughtfully considered and even coveted, so have these active-lifestyle watches captured the imagination of buyers everywhere. The watches often feature an array of markings signifying everything from the month and the day to the countdown for a regatta. There is no segment of the market, from the kitschy to the collectible, that is not enamored of this style. While it’s typically been men who were drawn to the racy glamour of the chronograph, women are increasingly opting for the look, complete with larger case.

GLAM ROCK

sporty chrono

The sporty chrono achieves the difficult balance of being practical (waterproof, some even dive-proof) while also speaking of that most envied byproduct of wealth: leisure time, preferably spent near the water. Philip Stein’s TESLAR chronograph is just one example of this stylish genre. Designed in honor of the scientistinventor Nikola Tesla, the line purports to increase well-being in the wearer by strengthening the body’s natural electromagnetic field. Options such as alligator or calf straps, and the choice of inlaid diamonds on the bezel, don’t hurt either. National Geographic found a way to say it all in a name with its sturdy time teller, the Himalaya. This survivor chrono features a built-in thermometer, altimeter and barometer along with date and time features.

limelighted

RITMO MUNDO

For those occasions when glamour is all, no wardrobe should forego the white-tie watch. Almost any watch can connote this: Elton John, for example, wore a shocking-pink chrono from his signature Chopard collection to the 2003 White Tie and Tiaras Ball for his eponymous charity. Typically, though, this is the dazzling crown jewel, the one that is bedazzled with jewels. The world of haute horlogerie is entirely dedicated to this style of watch, and the annual convention in Switzerland always showcases the breathtaking best of the lot. One we love: Bulgari’s latest Assioma D, with a rose-cut diamond centered in an 18k white-gold case set in an 18k white-gold bracelet enveloped with diamonds on either perimeter. Staggeringly, it’s even water-resistant — for those nights of Felliniesque dancing in fountains. However you choose to mix and match your own lifestyle moods, today’s watch market offers an embarrassment of choices.

LOOKING FOR THAT ONE PERFECT KNOCK-EM-DEAD TREASURE? HERE’S YOUR WISH LIST OF HEAD-TO-TOE TREATS BY LAUREN PRICE

Yvel adds sparkle to the pearls that are its signature jewel.

MIKIMOTO

one perfect piece This season, designers are serving up a uniquely diverse collection of flattering, candy-colored gems and jewelry items for men and women — making it as easy as pie to pick a piece that inspires your fashion sensibilities.

change is good Get extra miles from your style with quick-change accessories that automatically alter your image. It’s a snap to find rings, pendants and earrings boasting exchangeable gemstones and sterling-silver alphabet lock charms that can be snapped on and off just about anything: a bracelet, a chain or even a handbag.

YVEL

the eyes have it Snazzy sunglasses are, more than ever, all the rage these days. This season’s styles can include frames and ear pieces studded with 18k gold or semiprecious stones.

pearly gates Pearls are a classic addition to any outfit. A great gift for milestone events such as a college graduation, they pair perfectly with that little black dress meant for a special Saturday night or a romantic escape. This time around, adorn your neck with Tahitian cultured pearls. Adding enhancer briolettes (teardrop emeralds, sapphires and rubies) is also very now. The latest collections from both Yvel and Mikimoto include masterful selections of white, black and gold South Seas or Japanese biwa pearls. Yvel’s 18k Diamond Waterfall pendant-like necklace is a real stunner, made up of a unique blend of pastel freshwater pearls and diamonds. Mikimoto’s Vintage Collection of pearls, set off by shimmering diamonds, is inspired by the Art Deco era of another, more glamorous time.

KABANA

THE CLASSIC METAL IS BIGGER, BOLDER AND MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN EVER, IN JEWEL-BEDECKED PIECES THAT ADD SUBSTANCE TO STYLE BY LAUREN PRICE

JOHN HARDY

Jewelry designers are most definitely going bigger and bolder when it comes to gold baubles — oversize must-haves that add instant “oomph” to any wardrobe. Textured yellow-gold pieces are grabbing attention this year, as reported by the National Jeweler Network. Big, bold hoops are on the latest hot list for ear candy. The key ingredient for trendsetting style-seekers is larger, more impactful styles that are gem-intensive.

Gold cocktail rings are definitely back with a bang, many with massive settings of precious and semiprecious colored stones. Check out the latest ones from Hello Kitty, particularly the white- and rose-gold diamond ring bejeweled with pavé diamonds, rubies, onyx and citrine. Thin stackable rings are still hot items. Absolutely consider mixing textures and color — as in white, rose and yellow gold. In keeping with this year’s ring trends, Chopard’s Happy Spirit heart ring in 18k white gold with a floating diamond is another good bet for staying in style.

charmed, we’re sure Feminine, glamorous and timeless, layering long gold chains à la Chanel gives your wardrobe a classic yet contemporary infusion of style. Better yet, buy the ones that hit the waist. If indeed you take your cues from the runways, you’ll be wearing delicate 18-inch-long chains with dangling whimsical charms: gold keys, lucky numbers, anchors, sunglasses. They’re good to go day or night. For those who swear by any bauble from David Yurman, his three-row 18k “bib” necklace is awash with smoky quartz, prehnite, olive quartz, yellow sapphire and gray freshwater pearls.

JUDITH RIPKA

Judith Ripka’s drop earrings are a shimmering must-have.

And why should you choose between white and yellow gold when you can have both? The reversible omega necklace is the answer when you can’t decide. One side is 14k white gold; the other side, 14k yellow gold. They don’t call this the little black dress of the jewelry wardrobe for nothing.

drop it Drop earrings are still casting a spell on fashionistas. Sought-after pairs include Judith Ripka’s dazzling 18k pavé-diamond drops and John Hardy’s sterling-silver drops with jazzy 22k hammered yellow-gold centers. Style-seeking women who follow fashion know reinterpreted chandelier earrings are in, too. Seriously sultry, this year’s styles are longer, nearly shoulderlength, and add more than a dash of color to your outfit. We like Kabana’s 14k rosegold earrings, each inlaid with pink mother-of-pearl and topped with one diamond, for a dressier look. PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF DAVID YURMAN

it’s all in the wrist Shiny, oversize gold cuffs and stacked, nearly-wrist-to-elbow bangles are also rocking the jewelry world these days. High on the trendsetting list, these bracelets can be worn anywhere, anytime and with anything. Attracting Hollywood “It” girls like Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Richie, Beyoncé and Kate Hudson, stacks of bracelets and chunky chains are now de rigueur evening wear. David Yurman’s Tsavana Collection features an 18k chain-link bracelet in yellow gold dotted with smoky quartz, citrine, lemon citrine, olive quartz, yellow sapphire and gray freshwater pearls. From his Confetti Collection, an 18k sculpted cable cuff boasts five rows of faceted brown, green and orange tourmalines. From great pairs of dazzling earrings and sigh-inducing bracelets to oodles of chains and gem-filled rings — this year’s golden baubles are designed to make a significant fashion statement.

Hollywood golden girl Kate Hudson arms herself with the latest look, a chunky bracelet that really sets off her delicately feminine gown.

inspired and inspiring INSIDE THE INVENTIVE WORLDS OF GREAT JEWELRY CREATORS BY MICHELLE ROSEN

From Roberto Coin’s exaltation of contemporary femininity to the entrepreneurial spirit of Franco and Maria Luisa Pianegonda, today’s top jewelry designers reveal surprising approaches to their unforgettable creations.

108

[ jewelry | designer profiles ] ROBERTO COIN’S design philosophy is best described as joie de vivre — the joy of living — originating in the worlds of cinema, fashion and celebrity. Coin considers creating jewelry to be play rather than work. For him, producing jewelry is the path to personal satisfaction.

JOHN HARDY and his wife, Cynthia, worked with local builders on Bali and created low-impact structures that respect the natural harmony of the land, use available materials and support local customs, culture and the Balinese people.

FOR YVEL founders Isaac and Orna Levy, creating high-end jewelry designs featuring pearls is in their blood. Yvel’s jewelry reflects a time when artisans spent hours creating one-of-a-kind pieces that were cherished like fine art. FRANCO PIANEGONDA and his sister, Maria Luisa, seek to design and produce innovative, top-quality jewelry with style, taste and elegance. Their creations are inspired by everyday life.

JUDITH RIPKA creates jewelry of understated elegance suitable to be worn for all occasions. Her designs are classically informed and timeless, yet thoroughly modern.

Read on to discover the creative worlds of the designers behind the jewelry.

roberto coin

The gold threads of this piece from the Appassionata Collection are woven together to ensure a sensuous flexibility.

“We make so many new designs every year and I would love to create a special jewel for every woman who buys my collections.” —Roberto Coin

in his own words Fashion was always Roberto Coin’s passion so it seems only natural that his signature collection is Appassionata, which means “passionate.” In 1977, Coin founded his eponymous company in Vicenza, Italy — the City of Gold. Coin launched his own brand in 1996. Since then he has dedicated himself to “the ultimate Italian art of creating jewels.” Possibly the most sophisticated line he has ever created, Appassionata was introduced in 1996 and aimed to reproduce the same flexibility as fabric, using woven gold — a dream many jewelry manufacturers and designers had tried unsuccessfully to achieve. After years of research and a new patented manufacturing technique, Appassionata pieces are as light and lithe as fabric. The way in which the gold threads are woven together ensures this sensuous flexibility. Appassionata is comprised of bracelets, rings, earrings and necklaces in 18k white, yellow or rose gold with or without diamonds — and with a hidden ruby. The first line to be adorned with this signature ruby, Appassionata holds a special place in Coin’s heart and, after more than a decade, remains one of the designer’s best known and most popular collections. It has been re-imagined several times over, following his ever-evolving style. “Changing style is my style,” Coin says. The newest addition is the Appassionata chain collection. With chunky links the hot look in fashion, the new design maintains Coin’s reputation as an industry visionary. Available in 18k white, yellow or rose gold, the link necklaces come in varying lengths and can be topped off with 18k gold lock charms in many different styles with or without diamonds. From fluid bracelets and dainty bangles to fashionable link chains, Appassionata demonstrates Coin’s depth as a designer. Coin’s philosophy is that play is central to one’s life and to one’s work. Play, often mental but sometimes also physical, is one of the secrets of an everlasting youth. “My play is to cultivate my passion, finding the formula of being an eternal pioneer, ready to begin new adventures,” he says. “My play is to fulfill my dreams and the desire to find time and space to create jewelry that I love — to create objects of desire meant for the eyes, hands and hearts of those who have the ability to be surprised.” Coin attempts to live a life of everyday conquest, seeking personal growth and happiness in his work, “using prestigious material and the possibility of making unique art,” he says.

110

What Inspires You? Most of all I’m inspired by the great minds of the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. Normally my mind works at least 18 hours a day, but I would say that solitude is the moment when your mind works better, you have time to think, dream and design a collection, and also be able to see it before it is actually made. In order to create, I must feel good and feel happy. There’s no way I can create anything unless I feel this way — which is most of the time in my life. Who Do You Imagine Wearing Your Collections? Having created over 40,000 models, I like making jewelry for children, who are special in my life as are older people, for whom I also care a great deal. But then, of course, I have to follow the market. I like my female clients to be intelligent and very curious. If You Weren’t Creating Jewelry, What Might You Be Doing Instead? I love fashion in general, and so the pret-a-porter would have definitely been number one, interior designing number two, plants and flowers definitely number three.

[ jewelry | designer profiles ]

john hardy On the culturally rich, beautiful island of Bali, John and Cynthia Hardy created a globally recognized line of fine jewelry that embraces the concept of “sustainable luxury” and elevates it to an art. The couple began to work together in 1989. The luxury department store Neiman Marcus spotted John Hardy’s silver key-holders, ordered up a smaller version as earrings, “and people went crazy for them,” says Cynthia Hardy. John Hardy won the Town & Country Award for Best Design in Silver for a bracelet from the Kali Collection, named for the smooth stones that line the riverbeds along their Bali workshop’s paths. Other designs also are inspired by elements of Bali’s culture. “I wanted to use totally traditional Balinese crafts and reinvent them in a way that’s useful, timeless and at the same time modern,” John Hardy says. “I think you can feel the hand of the artisan in our pieces. There’s a warmth of spirit that remains in the silver, in the gold.”

“We believe in a notion of sustainable luxury — that the value of an object depends not only on the quality of its materials and the expertise of its craftsmanship, but also on the feeling of well-being of the artisan who makes it.” —John Hardy

in his own words What Inspires You? The people and the culture of Bali still inspire me to this day. Also, I am obsessed with nature, the environment and one material in particular: bamboo. Who Do You Imagine Wearing Your Collections? Liv Tyler and Natalie Portman have been seen wearing large cuffs from my Bamboo Collection. What make these cuffs so beautiful are the special grills on the back that depict both the bamboo theme and the endangered Bali starling songbird. If You Weren’t Creating Jewelry, What Might You Be Doing Instead? We were one of the first companies to take a position on global warming. I hope to reforest Nusa Penida, a small island off the coast of Bali where our workshop is located and, with the help of others, reforest the world, one island at a time.

isaac levy — yvel Isaac Levy and his wife, Orna, founded Yvel in Jerusalem in 1986, continuing a family tradition of more than a century of creating high-end jewelry designs featuring pearls and gold for clients who cherish unique, artistic creations.

in his own words What Inspires You? Orna and I are mostly inspired during the pearl auctions in the Far East, by the unusual pearls that we find there. We first find the pearls that personally attract us, and only then come up with the creation of the piece of art. Sometimes inspiration comes from a beautiful painting, a song, a fashion show or just from nature. Who Do You Imagine Wearing Your Collections? The independent, sophisticated, ageless woman of the world, a woman who is looking for the unusual and wants to feel and be seen as sensual. If You Weren’t Creating Jewelry, What Might You Be Doing Instead? As an Argentinean, I always played soccer. As a young man I played on a semiprofessional soccer team in Israel but, unfortunately, my father voted against it. Today, I am really a 48-year-old frustrated soccer player, who still plays once a week with friends.

The couple took a family-run retail business into design and manufacturing, shaping Isaac Levy Jewelry into Yvel — the mirror image of their surname. Recognizing clients’ desire for unique pieces of jewelry, they soon began to introduce limited-edition collections. “People were demanding jewelry of the utmost quality that was truly different. They literally wanted their jewelry to be wearable art,” Isaac Levy says. Yvel’s signature collections include the Biwa, the Golden Brown and the One of a Kind. Its breakthrough success came in winning the Town & Country Couture Design award (the Oscar of the jewelry world) three times in a row. Pearls are the central focus of all Yvel jewelry designs because, Isaac Levy says, “they represent one of nature’s loveliest creations and are very much in fashion. Pearls are also ultra-feminine.”

“We like keeping the pearl as the center motif of the Yvel designs and then just caress it with some gold and diamonds created by nature, designed by Yvel.” —Isaac Levy

[ jewelry | designer profiles ] franco and maria luisa pianegonda Franco Pianegonda and his sister, Maria Luisa, create jewelry that expresses a forceful character and contemporary lifestyle and is the basis for a whole new concept of luxury: “Twenty-First Century Luxury, by Pianegonda.” Franco Pianegonda developed his artistic skills as a designer by seeking new opportunities and challenges. Maria Luisa Pianegonda, who has worked alongside her brother since the company was founded in 1994, inspires the quest for true femininity and for a whole new way to wear jewelry: as part of everyday style. Pianegonda jewelry uses four distinctive forms: the lovesick heart, symbolizing the two opposite sides of life and love; the key, symbolizing the power to safeguard the intimate secrets of the human soul and the key that unlocks the door to emotions; the cross, representing the divine values of peace and brotherhood; and the circle, symbolizing the circle of life. Pianegonda’s Donna 2007 Collection for women features silver rings, chains and necklaces with the characteristic “lovesick” charms shaped like hearts, as well as coins with the Pianegonda logo engraved in bas-relief. Gold Woman creations in gold appear softer, lit up by pavé diamonds, as in the Golden Navy line, or by natural stones including topaz, amethyst and quartz fumé with unique and styled shapes. Pianegonda’s 2007 Character of the New Man Collection is meant for men of character. The collection combines silver in the brilliance of gold, white and black diamonds, quartz fumé and onyx.

“The Pianegonda woman knows what she wants and knows how to get it. She is curious, intelligent and dynamic. Rather than following fashion, she prefers to interpret it in her own way.” —Maria Luisa Pianegonda

in their own words What Inspires You? “My Italian roots are present in all the jewelry I create, formed by emotion and by passion to do things differently,” Franco Pianegonda says. Who Do You Imagine Wearing Your Collections? “The Pianegonda woman prefers an elegant and refined style that expresses a contemporary way of life and a complete independence in taste and mind,” Maria Luisa Pianegonda says. If You Weren’t Creating Jewelry, What Might You Be Doing Instead? “Our mission has always been to transmit happiness and emotions through original design, the purity and beauty of our creations, quality of materials and excellence of service,” says Franco Pianegonda.

judith ripka For Judith Ripka, it all started 30 years ago when friends admired the jewelry she was making for herself and asked her to design for them. When a friend asked her to modernize an old pearl necklace, the result became Ripka’s PN 1 style: a strand of pearls with a detachable 18k gold loop-and-toggle closure.

in her own words What Inspires You? The women who wear my jewelry. I still get a thrill when I see a woman wearing a piece I designed. Usually, I immediately start designing a piece to complement the one she is wearing. Who Do You Imagine Wearing Your Collections? Women — young to old, politician to Hollywood A-lister, professional to soccer mom — gravitate to my jewelry because they tell me, when they put it on, they feel good. If You Weren’t Creating Jewelry, What Might You Be Doing Instead? Designing jewelry is part of my DNA. Some of my friends played with dolls, others played sports, I accessorized. If not jewelry, I think I’d make large-scale sculptures.

112

“This one pivotal piece laid the foundation for my collection, which is based on fluidity and a system of interchangeable components, versatile for wear from day into evening,” Ripka says. The Fontaine Ring in Ripka’s Sterling Silver and 18k Gold Collection is one of her signature pieces. The center gemstone is set in diamond heart prongs; Ripka often incorporates hearts into her designs as a subtle reminder of romance and love. “I approach jewelry design like many fashion designers approach clothing design,” Ripka says. “It is about building a collection and understanding that fashion is about style and creating a total look. Jewelry is integral to a woman’s wardrobing.” Ripka believes the many roles she plays in her life — wife, mother, grandmother, busy professional — help her to fulfill her clients’ needs and desires for versatile, classic jewelry with a modern twist. Her philosophy has always been to design jewelry that’s wearable with blue jeans, black tie and everything in between. Each piece of her jewelry is designed to complement the entire collection and to remain timeless.

“Women tell me my concept of interchangeable components was a stepping stone for them to embrace having fun with their jewelry.” —Judith Ripka

[ jewelry | trends ] floating fantasies by asher The sapphire has been beloved for centuries as the king of gems. The ancient Persian rulers believed it was the sapphire’s reflection that gave the blue color to the rainbows. Blue, yellow and pink sapphires are referred to as “fancy” colored. The sapphire has been credited with profound powers such as the ability to protect the wearer against poisons and evil spirits. The Floating Fantasy Collection by Asher is a designer line of moving sapphires encased in crystal. The collection is available in pink, yellow and blue sapphires, with and without diamond accents.

Colored gemstones add depth and vitality to jewelry designs.

stones in season COLORED GEMSTONES OFFER A RAINBOW OF FASHIONABLE CHOICES BY CATHY GLOVER

Colored gemstones generally fall into two main categories: transparent and opaque. Light passes through transparent stones such as garnet and citrine, while opaque gems like coral and turquoise block the passage of light.

Whatever your favorite color, there’s likely a gemstone with a similar hue.

The same principles used to judge diamonds — color, cut, clarity and carat weight — apply to other gemstones. Color is key. A clear, medium-tone, very intense, saturated primary color is preferred.

PIANEGONDA

Gemstone prices vary depending on the category of stone. Traditional stones like the ruby, emerald and blue sapphire sell for about $250 to $10,000 per carat; connoisseur gems like black opal, jadeite, pink topaz and cat’s-eye chrysoberyl go for about $250 to $5,000 per carat; “new” classics like tanzanite, tourmaline, aquamarine, imperial topaz and tsavorite garnet cost about $50 to $1,000 per carat; the amethyst, citrine, peridot, rhodolite garnet and similar stones fetch about $5 to $100 per carat.

JUDITH RIPKA

DAVID YURMAN

Gemstones can be used as details, or a piece can be all about the gems.

120

[ jewelry | stones ] alexandrite

garnet

Named after Russia’s Czar Alexander II (1818-1881), alexandrite derives much of its allure from its ability to change color: from green or bluish-green in daylight to soft red, purplish-red or raspberry red by evening light. This unique power makes it one of the world’s most valuable gemstones.

Although garnets come in a variety of colors — every color except blue, in fact — it’s the red garnet that is most popular. The intensely green tsavorite, mined only in Kenya and Tanzania, is a member of the garnet family.

opal

amethyst Amethysts range in color from pale lilac to deep purple. Pale colors — sometimes referred to as Rose de France — are found in Victorian-era jewelry. Deep colors are the most valued. The ancient Greeks believed that amethyst imbued the wearer with immunity to the effects of alcohol.

ammolite Known as Canada’s gemstone, this unusual gem has been commercially mined only since 1981. Millions of years of tectonic pressure created this beautiful gem from the fossilized remains of the ammonite shell. Each ammolite gem is unique in brilliance, color and pattern; the rarest and most desirable show three or more colors.

The brilliant play of colors is what attracts us to opals. The attractive stone constantly changes with the light, from blue-green flashes to warmer tones of pink, red and orange.

ruby Known as the most valuable of colored gemstones, the ruby, with its fiery red color, is the stone of passion. The deep color of a fine ruby is probably the most intensely colored substance our ancestors ever saw. No wonder they ascribed magical powers to the ruby and deemed it the king of precious stones. The ruby is second only to the diamond in hardness, and large stones (more than two carats) are quite rare.

sapphire

aquamarine Known as the gem of the sea for its pale-to-medium blue to light green color, the aquamarine is said to have a soothing influence on married couples. It purportedly has the power to ensure long and happy marriages, making it a popular anniversary gift.

citrine This affordable gemstone, named after citrus fruit, ranges in color from juicy lemon to orange-brown. The stone blends especially well with gold. Some citrine is created by heat-treating amethyst, a member of the same crystalline quartz family.

emerald Ancient cultures around the world prized the emerald and associated its rich green color with the color of spring: a time of love and rebirth. Legend has it that the emerald gives its owner the gift of eloquence; it is also said to have healing powers, especially for the eyesight.

The true blue gem of the heavens, the sapphire has long symbolized sincerity and truth. The stone also represents divine favor and is the choice of many monarchs and high priests. While traditionally thought of as a blue gem, sapphires in fact exist in a range of colors. Pink sapphires are more rare than blue stones, and their vibrant hue is especially suitable for women’s jewelry.

tanzanite The magnificent gem known as tanzanite is mined from only one place in the world: the Merelani Hills of Tanzania, under the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro. Tanzanite’s rich purples and blues have been compared to the colors of a sapphire. Paler tanzanite is a delicate periwinkle.

topaz Topaz sometimes appears as amber-gold or peach in color. Either way, its warm brown-and-orange tones are lovely. Imperial topaz, a golden orange-yellow stone, is the most valuable. Topaz can be heattreated or irradiated to produce an array of colors.

[ diamonds ] “People are on vacation, they’re relaxing, they want to buy a beautiful memento of their trip,” says Jamie Cadwell, a spokeswoman for the Diamond Information Center, the marketing arm of the Diamond Trading Company. “People buy them to celebrate achievements: promotions, graduations, anything else that’s momentous,” she says. “A diamond is for all the brilliant moments in life.” Smart consumers also seek out the Caribbean to upgrade the gems they already own. Many HEARTS ON FIRE

jewelers will happily exchange your diamonds for larger, more finely cut stones and apply the current value of your trade to the newer price. Just imagine the thrill of proposing again to your lifelong love and presenting an even finer diamond ring for the second time around. Today’s top brands offer ever-more-entrancing ways of sparking the flame of desire in diamond-seekers.

brilliant moves The sparkle of a diamond is largely determined by the way in which the stone is cut. Light enters the diamond through its many facets and bounces back out in a burst of brilliance.

ROBERTO COIN CENTO

The more perfectly cut the facets, the more sparkle. For most diamonds, 58 is the standard number of facets. That was eclipsed long ago by brands that are cutting 100 facets or more into the stone. But what really matters is where, how and at what angle the facets are cut. Finesse Diamonds spent years perfecting the cut of its eight-sided, 88-faceted octagonal gem, The Eighty-Eight®. Finesse didn’t set out to create 88 facets, but found its perfect number after a determined quest for a unique cut. Roberto Coin’s master cutters spend 12 to 15 hours on just one Cento diamond, Coin’s

around the base and a fire-burst pattern on the top. Timothy Pasha’s cutters and setters use their diamond to evoke the delight of watching a firefly flickering in twilight’s romantic glow. Each piece in the Timothy Pasha Firefly Collection is emblazoned with a firefly bearing a 1-point diamond in its tail. For the Crown of Light diamond, the light is maximized through perfect placement of 90 exquisitely cut facets. The Crown of Light’s designers call their creation “a catcher of light” because of its ability to retain and produce remarkable brilliance. These brands work mostly with traditional white gems. But diamonds also come in colors, from fancy yellow to pink, blue and even brown and black. Blue is the hottest trend in colored diamonds. It started with Sophia Fiori, which uses mild color-enhancing techniques to maximize natural hues. Their visual impact is stunning when

happily ever after Whether you choose these heavenly hues or opt for a more traditional sparkle, there’s no better time or place to choose a diamond than while cruising in the Caribbean. When the magic of vacation fades and workaday life returns, the diamond you purchased will keep those lovely memories alive for generations to come.

With 90 facets — nearly twice as many as an ordinary diamond — the Crown of Light is literally a “catcher of light” due to its ability to retain and produce the most brilliance. The Crown of Light cannot be missed, because every queen deserves a Crown.

hearts on fire Hearts On Fire diamonds communicate the power, magic and meaning of emotion. These serialized diamonds are AGS-documented and are always perfectly cut at ten times the industry standard to maximize beauty and light performance. Hearts On Fire is recognized worldwide for establishing a new industry standard for consistent excellence in diamond manufacturing. Hearts On Fire diamonds are rare. Less than 1 percent of the world’s gemquality rough diamond crystals are pure enough to be cut and polished into Hearts On Fire diamonds.

Roberto Coin’s Cento Collection features scintillating 100-facet diamonds in stunning C-Profile engagement rings. The C-Profile setting is thoughtfully designed to reveal all of the brilliance of this incomparable diamond cut. An elevated mount allows for light to refract within the diamonds’ distinctive floral design not only from the top but from the pavilion as well. Unique in design, these rings are a symbol of love and commitment as well as a statement of individuality.

sophia fiori Sophia Fiori Blue Diamonds are eye-catching, exciting and avant-garde, yet also subtle, elegant and regal. They show uniqueness and a royal style. Inspired by the Hope Diamond and featured at the 2007 Golden Globes and Emmys, Sophia Fiori offers one-of-a-kind, award-winning jewelry styles that are exclusively available in the Caribbean. Sophia Fiori is a rare treasure that is affordable to all.

bringing it

home

IMPORTANT REGULATIONS FROM U.S. CUSTOMS AND BORDER PROTECTION

there are limits Follow a few simple rules and you’ll get all your goodies home without a hitch.

Depending upon the country you visited, you are allowed a personal exemption of $200, $800 or $1,600 worth of duty-free purchases, meaning you won’t pay a tax — or duty — on these items if they are intended for your personal or household use. You get the $800 or the $1,600 exemption if you stay out of the United States for longer than 48 hours. You can get the $200 exemption only once a month. If you are returning from anywhere other than a U.S. insular possession, such as the U.S. Virgin Islands, you may bring back $800 worth of items duty-free, as long as you carry them with you. CBP calls this “accompanied baggage.” If you mail any items home to yourself, duty may be waived if the value is $200 or less. Your $800 exemption includes up to 200 cigarettes and 100 cigars, provided the tobacco products are not Cuban, and one liter (33.8 fluid ounces) of alcoholic beverages, provided you are at least 21 years old.

You came. You saw. You conquered. The stores, that is. Now that you’ve experienced the thrill of the (duty-free!) chase and the exhilaration of finding the perfect souvenir to commemorate your well-deserved vacation, it’s time to get down to business — the business of bringing it all home. Here are some tips for the savvy traveler.

You may bring back more than 200 cigarettes or 100 cigars only if those additional products were foreign-made; these extra products will be subject to tax and duty. However, if the excess products were made in the United States and previously exported, you may not bring back more than these numbers at all, regardless of tax and duty. These products are usually labeled “Tax Exempt, for use outside the United States,” “U.S. Exempt, for use outside the United States” or “Export Only.”

in perfect form Did you bring an extra lightweight carry-on bag to haul home gifts and other vacation-bought items? If not, pick one up in port or on the ship. A soft, easy-to-pack nylon bag is ideal, and it should zip shut or close securely to protect your purchases. You’ll save time and patience if, before disembarking, you take a few minutes in your stateroom to fill out those declaration forms from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Have all your receipts and your passport handy so you don’t have to waste time searching for documentation if a CBP officer asks you to provide proof of purchase or proof of identification. Many passport holders have extra slots on the cover designed for this very purpose, or you can use an empty envelope to organize your shopping receipts.

advice on alcohol

EDWARD MIRELL

There is no federal limit to the amount of alcohol you may bring back for personal use, but individual states may have caps on how much you may bring in without a license. In addition, CBP officers may require you to obtain a permit if you are bringing back an unusually large amount. CBP officials also recommend checking your liquor instead of carrying it, and say the Transportation Security Administration limits the amount you can carry on or check. They say TSA screeners have not hesitated to seize anything over the limit of 10 liters (10.57 quarts), and urge travelers to check with TSA about taking liquor onboard an aircraft. They note that TSA is seizing any liquid not sealed in a proper 3-ounce bottle or baggie. Check the Know Before You Go booklet, available from your Shopping Guide, for detailed information. Also included in the booklet is a list of 24 Caribbean Basin countries. You may bring back a second exempted liter of alcohol if it was produced and purchased in a Caribbean Basin country. If you return directly or indirectly from the U.S. Virgin Islands, your exemption is $1,600. You may include 1,000 cigarettes as part of this exemption, as long as 800 were acquired there. Likewise, you are allowed five liters (5.29 quarts) of alcoholic beverages, as long as one of them is a product of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

what to declare? everything According to CBP, you must declare every item you purchased during your trip, whether it was in a duty-free shop, on the ship or at a roadside stand on one of the islands — regardless of whether you went over the personal exemption and regardless of whether the items were bought for your personal use or are intended as gifts for others. You must also declare any gifts you were given during the trip; they fall under the duty-free exemption if they are intended for your personal use. All this means that you must state on the CBP declaration form how much each new purchase or gift is worth in U.S. currency. Don’t be tempted to try to sneak your dutyfree goods through CBP; you risk forfeiting them. And you have to pay duty on all gifts and purchases intended for business, promotional or commercial purposes — no ifs, ands or “but it just cost ten dollars!”

check, please (or cash, traveler’s check or money order) When it comes to paying duty, the rule is simple: If you’re bringing it back with you, if you didn’t have it when you left and if its total value is more than your CBP exemption, it is subject to duty. If this is the case, for the first $1,000 that you are over your exemption, you will be charged a flat percentage rate. After that, the assessment rate will vary depending on the item that was purchased. Uncle Sam accepts U.S. currency, personal checks drawn on a U.S. bank, money orders and traveler’s checks.

Duty-free…tax-free…ship specials…great savings…before a cruise vacation, you always hear a lot about the spectacular shopping in the ports of call. So much so, in fact, that it all might seem a little overwhelming. Fortunately, you’ve got the onboard Discover Shopping Ashore program to orient you — and to help you make the most of your shoreside shopping sprees.

[ shopping style | shopping ashore ] decisions, decisions Almost anything you’re looking for, you’ll find in the ports of call. Not only will the selections amaze you, but the quality of the merchandise is second to none. With tens of thousands of shoppers visiting every week, stores really have the goods; the variety is mind-boggling! And they carry the finest in every product category. You’ll see the famous names you know from around the world and many others that you’ve only heard about.

a helping hand

Your Shopping Guide is a shopping destination expert!

Throughout your cruise, you’ll find the Shopping Guide to be an excellent source of information. This highly trained individual is a full-time member of the ship’s staff and is at your command for anything and everything to do with shopping in port. The Shopping Guide offers interesting, informative presentations about shopping in each port, plus instructional talks on such topics as buying loose gemstones or selecting a fine timepiece. And he or she can answer just about any port or shopping question you may have.

tune in, turn on, go shopping The Discover Shopping Network, shown on your stateroom TV, offers yet another way to learn about and plan your shoreside shopping. You’ll get a “virtual” tour of the Discover Shopping recommended stores in each port and a good look at some of their wares. Be sure to check out Discover Red Carpet Style, co-hosted by Robin Leach.

Make sure to watch the Discover Shopping Network on your stateroom TV!

required reading The night before you arrive in each port, the Discover Shopping map and port guide will be delivered to your stateroom. This invaluable resource will direct you to the guaranteed and recommended stores; the map illustrates each shop’s location and provides short descriptions of recommended stores, explaining their specialties and special promotions. Best of all, recommended stores are cruise-line guaranteed — they all honor the Discover Shopping 30-day guarantee.

Don’t forget your Discover Shopping map!

super savings

Discover red-carpet style! From top: Seiko, Kabana, Hearts On Fire and Festina.

While bargains abound, some luxury goods really stand out when it comes to savings. Even the savviest of savvy shoppers will be staggered by the extensive assortment of gold and silver jewelry and gemstones at substantial savings off Stateside prices. Fine timepieces are another fantastic bargain, and the selections can’t be beat. Exquisite china and crystal, elegant imported linens, the top fragrances and cosmetics, and your favorite liquors are all among the fabulous finds you’ll encounter as you shop.

GLAM ROCK

It’s the No. 1 reason to shop in paradise — the savings you’ll realize are significant for a number of reasons. Duty-free pricing is foremost among them. U.S. Customs and Border Protection charges varying amounts of duty on any product imported into the United States, and those amounts are reflected in the purchase prices. In the ports of call, the same goods are duty-free, resulting in savings of anywhere from 10 to 50 percent. In addition, sales tax is not charged in most ports, which translates to another 5 to 10 percent in savings. And you’ll be visiting some of the busiest shopping ports in the world, where the retailers buy and sell their merchandise in tremendous volume that adds up to the lowest possible prices for you.

the science of

shopping

SHOPPING IS GOOD FOR YOU: RESEARCH PROVES THE SURPRISING POWER OF PURCHASING BY SHARON GELTNER

Researchers have examined actual biological responses to shopping, and have found some surprising answers.

Shopping is good for your health!

family bonding

Experts say your brain gets a burst of feel-good substances called endorphins whenever you experience the satisfaction of picking just the right gift and the pleasure of bonding with your best pal at the mall. It’s a positive experience which can bring you closer to your kids, parents, friends and sometimes your spouse. Researchers include Emory University professors in Atlanta, who’ve teamed up with the Brighthouse Institute for Thought Sciences, a marketing consulting group, to pioneer “neuromarketing,” studying MRI scans of the shopper’s brain. The effects of shopping have been studied for 25 years by Paco Underhill, author of Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping, who’s known as “the Margaret Mead of shopping.”

Underhill says, “Shopping is, in essence, a woman’s rite of passage. “In the same way that fathers and sons bond over hunting together or throwing a ball around in the backyard, mothers and daughters shop. It’s time spent away from the house, the chores, the guys — time for girls to be girls. Mothers instill their values in their daughters: the lessons of deciding if a sale is worthy, how to find the best deals and even how to dress tastefully.” Amanda Ford, author of the intriguing Retail Therapy: Life Lessons Learned While Shopping, loves to shop with her mother. “We each bring a different set of shopping skills, making our trips more satisfying and exciting than they would be had we perused the boutiques by ourselves,” Ford says. Ford recalls, “Shopping has always been a huge bonding experience in my family. Every August, my grandmother and I would get up really early and spend one entire day going from store to store. She had great patience, and she always bought me a few perfectly matched outfits for school and we then had dinner out. This was tremendous for our relationship, because shopping was an activity that we could share.” Men can benefit too. Divorced father Doug Monroe told readers of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that school shopping with his 12-year-old daughter unexpectedly became a “bonding ritual.”

[ shopping style | science of shopping ] “We had to do the thing I hate the most: shop. Then we stumbled into a shoe store that was going out of business. Caroline found a pair of fifty-dollar Reeboks marked down to ten dollars, and fifty-dollar hiking boots also marked down to ten dollars. “Suddenly, I was transformed. I finally understood why women shop. I felt triumphant…. My endorphins were unleashed,” Monroe wrote.

friends indeed Underhill says that girlfriends who shop together spend the most time in the store, while women who bring husbands spend the least. “When friends shop together, it’s mostly time spent gossiping or fawning over one another. ‘Oh, this dress would look so great on you,’ or ‘The shade of that blouse brings out the green in your eyes.’ Who doesn’t like to be endlessly complimented? It should also be noted that women dress to impress other women, not men.” And women help each other select presents. “When I shop for the people who have everything, I buy food, especially gourmet chocolates,” says Lynn Grosner of Westborough, Massachusetts. “To see if the goodies are up to my standards, my friends and I make sure to have samples,” she adds, laughing. “When you get together with your girlfriends, what do you talk about? Men and shopping, right?” says Sophie Kinsella, the best-selling author of the Shopaholic series of novels, with four million books in print. In Shopaholic & Sister, the heroine, a world-class spendthrift, learns that she has a long-lost sister, a miser who reuses coffee grounds. But the shopaholic perseveres, and a breakthrough comes when she gives her sister a lovely silver necklace from Tiffany’s.

Families and friends often bond by hitting the stores together, and that’s an important emotional connection.

Stanford University researcher Norman Nies concluded in a 2000 study that shopping on the Internet is an isolating experience. “When you spend your time on the Internet, you don’t hear a human voice, and you never get a hug,” he says.

shopping’s ultimate challenge But many men like to shop online, and when they don’t, they like to browse for beer, junk food and electronics. If you’re dating or married to a guy like that, Underhill suggests taking him to computer stores that are next to shoe shops and agreeing to meet later. However, he says that “the ultimately more satisfying strategy is to get the man involved in shopping” and recommends that couples shop at Home Depot. That way they can enjoy browsing through a hardware store, yet play house. Underhill notes in an e-mail, “Shopping may or may not be able to strengthen a marital bond, but what woman wouldn’t reward a husband who sacrifices a Sunday afternoon of watching football to help find the perfect-fitting jeans or little black dress?”

are you

fit to shop?

BY ELIZABETH RINDONE

FOR YOUR PERSONAL BEST IN STORES, PLAN AND PREPARE

A fat wallet does not necessarily mean you’re ready to shop. Hit the stores without proper preparation and a plan of attack, and you may feel as spent as your money. “You are on vacation,” says experienced shopper Barbara Triana of Miami. “You want to return refreshed and happy, and with something fabulous you could never find at home.”

get ready Think function when dressing for your shopping spree. Comfortable walking shoes with cushy ankle socks, slip-ons or sandals are best. Keep the rest of your outfit simple, too, especially if you are clothes-shopping: nothing too tight or too complicated to quickly pull off and put back on. And a fabulous pair of polarized sunglasses will keep your eyes safe from the glaring sun. Serious shopping can be a real endurance test, and not just for your credit cards. Pace yourself by taking a break between stores. Carry a bottle of water to stay hydrated, and pack protein-rich snacks such as nuts or granola; in restaurants, stick to the light side of the menu. “Keep your shopping trip long enough to thoroughly enjoy but short enough that you won’t need aspirin and a four-hour nap afterwards,” Triana advises. “What good is buying that hot ensemble if you’re too tired to step out in it in the evening?”

the art of the deals If you buy at authorized merchant locations, you can save a chunk of change on even the most luxurious items such as watches and jewelry, Triana says. Your Shopping Guide can steer you to the best retailers in every port, where stores designated as recommended and guaranteed ensure the best deals on the best items.

you have the power No matter what country you’re in, one word is powerful and universally understood: No. If it’s not in your price range, politely say, “No.” “Any properly-trained shopkeeper will not let you leave the store without a purchase,” Triana points out. Ask for the best deal they can give, and when the price is right, “Flash your brightest smile and say, ‘Yes!’”

It’s a one-two punch: Prepare yourself and your shopping strategy and you’re sure to bag some great deals.

FESTINA

“Now complete your transaction. Walk away. Browse. Repeat.”
