A con路nois路seur: 1: expert; especially one who understands the details, technique, or principles of an art and is competent to act as a discerning judge 2: one who enjoys with discrimination and appreciation of subtleties. In the watch world, the above definition would include anyone possessing one of the classic timepieces shown at right.

The emotion attached to a loved one’s watch—one that has been passed down through generations—can be just as meaningful as the family tree itself. Whether the watch commemorates an occasion, is linked to a memorable story or exemplifies the wearer’s personality and style, people typically pass along items with meaning to them, explains Noel Poirier, director of the National Watch and Clock Museum in Columbia, Pa. To ensure the initial investment continues to hold value—not only sentimentally but also financially—experts advise investing in a brand with proven longevity, such as Cartier, Patek Philippe or Chopard, starting with a less expensive model, ranging from $3,000 to $10,000. Watches five years old or more are sound investments, while vintage men’s wristwatches at least 20 years old have the most potential to increase in worth, says collectible-watch dealer Jeff Harris of Jeff Harris Fine Arts, based in Beverly Hills. Purchasing from a reputable retailer ensures authenticity and a warranty, according to Poirier.

Watch collecting often is inspired by a childhood admiration for a movie star and his accoutrements. For instance, the timepieces sported by Steve McQueen, both onscreen and in real life, have become coveted keepsakes for fans and watch collectors. McQueen’s Rolex Submariner sold for $234,000 at an auction that also included the iconic TAG Heuer Monaco worn by the screen idol in the film Le Mans.

Bezel: The ring surrounding the watch dial (or face). The bezel is usually made of gold, gold plate or stainless steel. Originally, the bezel was the glass ring in the case that was snapped with the pressed-in crystal onto the center part of the watch case. Decorative and rotating rings are often called “bezels” today. Case: The protective cover on a watch. Cases are available in a variety of types and materials and come in many shapes (round, square, oval, rectangular, barrel-shaped or pillow-shaped).

watch glossary

Explaining a complication need not be complicated. Below are some commonly used watch terms.

(timeless style)

Jennifer Aniston received a watch as a gift from musician John Mayer during their courtship.

Complication: An additional mechanism in mechanical wristwatches that can be made only by specialists. The most important complications for mechanical watches include chronographs, calendars, retrograde indicators, striking works and alarms.

Another celebrity watch collector is singersongwriter John Mayer, a Rolex aficionado who is said to have given models from the company’s President collection to his then-girlfriends Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Aniston.

Crystal: The transparent cover on a watch face made of glass crystal, synthetic sapphire or plastic. Better watches often have a sapphire crystal, which is highly resistant to scratching or shattering. Quartz movement: Quartz crystals are very accurate and can be mass-produced, which makes them less expensive than most mechanical movements requiring a higher degree of craftsmanship. Mechanical watch: A timepiece driven by a spring or weight and which has a balance or pendulum as a timekeeping element. Self-winding mechanism: An additional mechanism using the wearer’s arm movements to tighten the mainspring of a mechanical watch. As the spring releases, it powers the watch. Water resistance: Terms such as “water-resistant to 50 meters” or “water-resistant to 200 meters” indicate that the watch can be worn underwater to various depths. Sources: BJSOnline.com and Maurice Lacroix.

22

MAURICE LACROIX

Crown: Also called a stem or pin, a crown is the button on the outside of the watch case that is used to set the time and date. In a mechanical watch the crown also winds the mainspring. In this case it is also called a “winding stem.”

So how do celebs get started in watch collecting? “As you acquire wealth, you’re presented with a lot of interesting investment options,” says Jeff Harris, a high-end watch dealer. He says stars are attracted to collecting because watches are a discreet and transportable representation of status and style. Non-celebrity collectors who can afford the very best can purchase a Patek Philippe. Harris calls Patek Philippe “the cornerstone of vintage and modern watch collecting,” primarily because of a consummate archive that makes it easy to verify the provenance of every watch.

After six nominations, Kate Winslet finally got her Oscar!

...To be beautiful, you don’t have to be super slim. —Kate Winslet 28

Moments from The Reader

Kate Winslet didn’t set out to top the A-list, much less win an Academy Award®, but the mother of two, who was catapulted to fame and got her first Oscar® nomination in the global phenomenon Titanic opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, has become one of Hollywood’s most fascinating and respected actresses.

“I don’t feel like a movie star and I don’t think I behave like one,” Winslet says. “To me, you’re a star when you’re on the red carpet being glamorous and getting your picture taken, but I wouldn’t describe myself as chic. Afterwards, I’m totally ready to go back to being Mummy.” ON THE WINNING SIDE that’s not to say Winslet (no stranger to high-fashion designers, from chanel and Dolce & Gabbana to badgley Mischka) didn’t look dazzling at the 2009 oscars in a two-tone black yves Saint Laurent gown (pictured on page 36). She admits going through three stylists before settling on the one-shoulder asymmetrical look the night she took home the prize. the 33-year-old british beauty collected the gold statue for best Actress for her wrenching performance as a Nazi concentration camp guard who relives her past at a war crimes trial in The Reader. After five previous nominations for Little Children, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Iris, Titanic and Sense and Sensibility, she teased, “i had practiced my loser’s look but finally i didn’t get a chance to use it.”

Winslet wore this classy Zac Posen number when she won the 2009 BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Award for Best Actress for her performance in The Reader.

(Celebrity style) FAMILY COMES FIRST Winslet’s life is centered in her marriage to Academy Awardwinning director Sam Mendes (American Beauty) and in raising their 6-year-old son Joe and 9-year-old daughter Mia (from her previous marriage to director Jim thereapleton). the couple has a country home in england, but spend most of their time in a trendy loft in Manhattan’s fashionable West chelsea. “the most important thing to me is that my children can have a normal life,” she says. “being a parent is absolutely the most extraordinary gift in the world, but at the same time it is chaotic, it is crazy, and there’s a lot of juggling that goes on. i sometimes feel i’m the sweatiest mother picking up her kids at school. but i try to stay relaxed and let Joe and Mia be who they are and play

and make a mess.”

“i rely a lot on Sam,” she adds. “it’s tough for guys because so much is expected of them in terms of helping out with the kids but i am blessed to have a husband who says, ‘right, it’s 6:15,

Winslet has played a variety of roles, from a virgin to a cheating housewife to a Nazi guard.

you get in the shower, i’ll make the coffee.’ When i get out of the shower, he goes, ‘Here’s your coffee, darling, shall we get the kids up now?' i mean it’s pretty fantastic.” even with a model husband at her side, Winslet has discovered that combining a high-profile career with parenting leaves her little time for herself. “it is difficult to find that time, but, to be honest with you, i would much rather spend it with my kids anyway,” she says. “i think what’s more of a struggle is being able to go out and have dinner with your husband. For some reason it’s possible to get everyone out the door to school, clothed and with their hair brushed and their teeth brushed, but getting to go out and have a margarita and a pizza with Sam seems to be the most challenging thing of all.” While Winslet gets a lot of help to look stunning in her public appearances and on movie sets, it isn’t a part of her daily routine. “i think when you have kids you don’t care as much about your appearance. i do the occasional facial which is the only time when i really indulge myself,” she says. “i have had my teeth bleached. i only go to the gym occasionally. Actually, after 30

being pregnant, i love those little leftover marks on your body.”

Filmography

(Celebrity style) HEAVENLY CREATURES [1994] She first got attention as a young murderess in a shocking true story of teen-age revenge, directed by Peter Jackson, who went on to helm Lord of the Rings. SENSE AND SENSIBILITY [1995] Her performance as the romantic Marianne Dashwood, in the big-screen version of the everpopular Jane Austen novel, brought her a first Oscar nomination for Best Actress. HAMLET [1996] She took on Shakespeare in the classic role of the tortured Ophelia, opposite Kenneth Branagh– who starred as the Prince of Denmark and also directed. JUDE [1996] She shocked audiences with her explicit nude scenes, playing the tragic Sue Bridehead in the film adaptation of the bleak Thomas Hardy novel. TITANIC [1997] Oscar nomination No. 2 and worldwide fame for joining Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic, a starcrossed romance on the ill-fated ship, which made them stars.

GeorGe Pimentel/WireimaGe.com

IRIS [2001] She scored her third Oscar nomination, for her supporting role as the daughter of acclaimed British novelist Iris Murdoch. ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND [2004] Another shot at Oscar for her performance opposite Jim Carrey, as his punk-haired girlfriend whose memory has been erased. FINDING NEVERLAND [2004] A touching turn as the widowed mother of four who inspired J. M. Barrie, played by Johnny Depp, to write Peter Pan. LITTLE CHILDREN [2006] Oscar nomination No. 5 for her wrenching portrayal of a suburban housewife trapped in a loveless marriage, who embarks on a steamy affair with a neighbor played by Patrick Wilson. REVOLUTIONARY ROAD [2008] After 21 years, she and Titanic co-star Leonardo DiCaprio are reunited in a disturbing story of a couple trying to cope with the boredom of their marriage in suburbia, directed by her husband, Sam Mendes. THE READER [2008] A sleeper hit that captured the hearts of Academy Awards voters, who finally gave her the Oscar for her performance as a former Nazi guard who seduces a teen-age boy and eventually faces a lifelong secret.

Winslet with her husband, director Sam Mendes, after winning her Oscar in 2009

INSPIRING BODY CONFIDENCE Speaking of her curvaceous figure, which she’s frequently bared on the big screen, Winslet can only shrug at the seeming gulf between her real-life domesticity and the intensity of explicit nude love scenes in so many of her films. “They are really hard to do,” she says. “I never enjoy them. I hate the fact that they’re there. But at the end of the day, as long as you really believe they’re necessary for the story then you can fill them with as much honesty as possible. The first two minutes is the worst. After that, you’re more concerned about getting it right and the anxiety goes away.” Her first time baring all was with Kenneth Branagh in Hamlet, which he also directed. “At the end of a take we’d be lying there completely naked and Ken would say, ‘Excuse me babe, I’ve got to check the scene.’ They’d rush in with a monitor and he’d stand there in the nude watching the playback while I was giggling to myself.” Winslet didn’t always have this level of body confidence. As an overweight teen, she says, “I was uncomfortable and self-conscious. I got teased and I was very insecure. I think there was a point where I became addicted to losing weight and I went too far.” But she says she was never anorexic.

Looking back on her career, in which she startled Hollywood by going from the super success of Titanic to the tiny indie film Hideous Kinky, Winslet reflects, “i think for a lot of young actors when you’re successful and you have paychecks being flashed before your eyes, it’s very difficult to forget that you must hang on to who you are because otherwise you have no soul and you have then nothing to give to this job that we’re all trying to do.” After Titanic, many offers came her way “that would have changed my life but i wasn’t ready,” she says. Winslet owes a lot of her success to her parents, who always told her to do her best and that that was good enough. She duplicates that teaching with her own kids. “that’s what i say to my daughter and my son in everything because i think it’s tremendously important to instill that kind of confidence in a child. My daughter will repeat it back to me. She says, ‘i’m doing

Diamond studs are the item every woman must own. This is the jewelry item that offers the best value because you will never take them off. Diamond studs will remain prized possessions in your family for generations to come. This can be a gift for yourself or the perfect present (hint hint!) from your significant other.

1. Diamond Stud Earrings

2. Necklace A fabulous necklace or chain is the finishing touch to a great outfit. You don’t need to own a lot of necklaces. Many designs available today can be worn up to ten different ways. Change the length, layer a necklace two or three times, then add enhancers and pendants for even more looks. See your Port & Shopping Guide onboard to learn how necklaces can add style to your wardrobe.

3. Right-Hand Ring

The right-hand ring tells the world who you are. Choose something with a lot of sparkle to celebrate your energy and love of life. Or look for a splash of color to reflect your sense of fun and adventure. Whatever you choose, a right-hand ring should be all about you.

4. Diamond Bracelet

Look back at style icons from any era and a diamond bracelet is always a staple of their jewelry wardrobe. Choose from classic tennis bracelets or fabulous bangles. Today’s fashion icons, such as Angelina Jolie and Sarah Jessica Parker, stack multiple diamond pieces or wear a diamond bracelet with their watch to add a touch of sparkle.

5. Watch

Your watch is the piece of jewelry you wear every day, so it makes sense to invest in a high-quality timepiece. Watches also define status and personal style. The watch you wear on your wrist says as much about you as the car you drive or the home you live in. Be sure to check out Discover Style’s “Build a Wardrobe of Watches” (pg. 68) to find the watch that’s perfect for you.

Propose to me By Patti Roth

Surrounded by rose petals and candlelight, San Antonio Spurs point guard Tony Parker asked actress Eva Longoria to be his wife. Parker didn’t get nearly as creative as some of the starry-eyed romantics who’ve popped the question while cruising. of course, a few of them had an advantage over Parker. he didn’t have the help of crew members who’ve become experts at sailing the sea of love: • a New york advertising executive proclaimed his love on the giant outdoor movie screen at the pool deck. it was sunset in the Caribbean. as guests relaxed on chaise lounges, the executive’s pre-taped video broadcast a photographic montage of him and his sweetheart. then, the words “marry me” flashed across the screen. She said yes, and the couple married on June 13, 2009. • a guest from New Jersey collaborated with a cruise director to issue his marriage proposal during the talent show. the guest crooned The Way You Look Tonight à la Sinatra, and then he popped the question. the couple celebrated their engagement on stage with a slow dance, as then-cruise director Eric Bohus and a full orchestra continued the song. “the crowd gave them a standing ovation,’’ Bohus recalls. “a great show finale.’’ • Dressed up for formal night, a guest discreetly clued in the ship’s photographer to his intention. after the traditional pose with his gal in front of a baby grand piano, the guest dropped to his knee and pulled a ring from his pocket. the photographer was ready to capture her reaction, as the astonished woman happily clapped her hands to her cheeks.

Kevin Mazur/WireiMage

hearts on fire

• Jay Pepper, an onboard activities staff member, proposed to his fiancée in a packed theater. after an elaborate musical production, Pepper stepped onstage, grabbed the microphone and declared to a dancer that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. “She gave me a little shove on the shoulder and nodded her head,’’ Pepper recalls. the crowd burst into applause.

Eva Longoria’s engagement ring was custom-designed and includes a total of 248 minute diamonds emblazoned across its shank, as well as an intimate engraving with a personal message written by Parker and in his handwriting inside the ring. Get a similar look with this Hearts On Fire ring at right.

Diamonds often are associated with engagement rings and other romantic gestures from a man to a woman. Some gals, however, are enthusiastically skipping the middleman and heading out on their own to buy something sparkly. The object of their affection? Diamonds. You don’t have to get engaged to have a diamond of your own. “Women are buying diamond jewelry of all kinds for themselves,” says designer Bernard Bachoura, owner of the Sophia Fiori jewelry company in Los Angeles. “It is a powerful statement about independence and equality. The traditional engagement ring worn on the left ring finger is still generally purchased for a woman by her husband-to-be, but every other piece, from earrings to right-hand rings, is now being purchased by women for themselves.”

color

carat

cut

Diamonds are graded on a scale established by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) that ranges from D (colorless) to Z (fancy yellow). Those that come in colors, such as Sophia Fiori’s blue and pink stones, have become quite popular.

A carat is a unit that refers to the weight of the diamond, not to the size. Each carat is divided into 100 points. A one-andone-half-carat stone would be labeled 1.50 ct.

“It is irrelevant whether the piece is small or very substantial. It is about the effect the jewelry has on the woman and how it makes her feel about herself.” —Jewelry designer Bernard Bachoura, Sophia Fiori Jewelry

Inclusions are identifying characteristics, like tiny crystals, clouds or feathers, seen in a diamond. Clarity refers to the relative presence or absence of inclusions; the size, nature, number and position of inclusions all influence the price.

The cut affects the amount of light reflected and dispersed through the diamond. The Eighty-Eight® diamond features eight sides and 88 facets, about 30 more facets than the average round diamond. Hearts On Fire manufactures diamonds that, when magnified, display a spectacular ring of eight symmetrical hearts from the bottom and a fire-burst from the top.

Traditional diamond cuts, pictured from top: round, pear, trillion, oval, marquise, heart, emerald and princess

And there’s no better time and place to treat yourself than while shopping in the Caribbean, says Port & Shopping Guide Pippa Taylor, who finds price and selection here are too tempting to pass up. She and her fellow onboard guides can assist guests “on the ship and in the port to make sure they get the best value for their money and the most beautiful diamond their money can buy.” So if you’re thinking of buying something for yourself, remember: You deserve it, says Port & Shopping Guide Liz Wadden, so buy what you love. “People—myself included—can get caught up in fashion trends, but the most important tip is to buy that piece or suite of jewelry that makes you excited and puts a smile on your face every single time you look at it on your hand, wrist or neck.”

Pearls

BY CaThY GLover Despite pearls’ traditional jewelry association (think: white round strand or stud earrings), today they’re obtainable in multitudinous shades, shapes and settings. Pearls have evolved. “They are no longer your grandmother’s pearls," says Isaac Levy, whose company, Yvel, offers designs in adventurous colors and shapes. “They are as appropriate with jeans as with business suits—the ultimate fashion accessory,” agrees Maureen Gribbin, spokeswoman for Mikimoto, which presents pink freshwater pearls in its chic, lariat-style Pearls in Motion necklaces. Yvel’s Biwa Collection comes from Lake Biwa in Japan, which is no longer producing pearls. Biwa pearls are flatter, having developed the shape of the oyster’s nucleus. They also possess a greater luster than ordinary pearls and naturally come in shades of pinks, peaches and creams.

Modern and classic, one thing has not changed about the adaptable pearl: Whether standing alone or set in a kaleidoscope of precious metals, gemstones or other pearls, this shiny morsel of femininity is an iconic part of any woman’s wardrobe.

every woman needs a strand of pearls. The most graceful women in the world make pearls the staple in their jewelry wardrobe. If you want to achieve the classic look of audrey hepburn or Jackie onassis, ask your Port & Shopping Guide for a vIP card to purchase Yvel pearls. You will not only enjoy wearing the pieces yourself, but you can pass them down to your children and grandchildren, too.

Sports technical watches have always been highly coveted for their functionality and durability. This is the ultimate watch, offering resilience to the urban warrior or specific functions to the avid sportsman. Sports technical watches offer an array of features, from something as practical as the lap-timer or a day-and-month window, to something specialized such as a countdown for a regatta or slide-rule for a pilot. The trend toward larger watch faces for women has prompted female watch collectors to opt for the glamour of technical complications.

Vacation Shopping 101

Style

The Caribbean is the best place in the world to shop for diamonds, gemstones, designer jewelry and watches. There’s a reason savvy travelers, bargain hunters and style experts alike return to the Caribbean to shop year after year. Here’s why: Bargains: Retailers don’t pay tax or duty on goods imported into the Caribbean, which may result in substantial savings for the consumer. Volume Savings: Caribbean retailers buy and sell in large volume—to cater to cruise-ship traffic—passing the savings on to shoppers. Designer jewelry and watch brands that are never discounted in the United States can offer special pricing in the Caribbean based on the sheer number of products sold. Vacation Shopping: It’s fun to shop on vacation— and it’s the perfect opportunity to find something special to help you remember your time at sea. Make it a point to visit the onboard Port & Shopping Guide, who can provide coupons that can save you hundreds of dollars. You’ll also get maps with cruise-lineguaranteed stores, and expert advice on where to shop. For the hours when your guide is available at the Port

A Refreshing Choice in ‘Green’ Clothing by George Alpizar

Feeling refreshed while working out or shopping in port can be a challenge, especially when the sun shows no mercy. Now, the days of feeling hot and sticky are over, thanks to wearable bamboo. Made from green shoots that become breathable fabric, wearable bamboo has emerged as a softer and more practical choice over cotton and silk. With companies and entrepreneurs seeking innovative products with a green perspective, it serves the earth as well as the wearer. Clothing made from earth-friendly bamboo fibers maintains body temperature—keeping its wearer three degrees cooler than if they were wearing cotton—while absorbing body moisture. Resistant to UV rays, bamboo-based clothing is a cool and comfortable alternative to cotton.

From dawn to dusk, TAG Heuer Eyewear with HD lens technology is designed to enhance land activities from casual outdoor enjoyment to professional athletic competition. The high definition TAG Zenith sunglasses, above, enhance dimensional detail of the landscape, replacing the flattening effect of polarized lenses.

Cariloha, the exclusive retailer for bamboo-based men’s and women’s clothing in the Caribbean market, makes good use of this renewable resource. The company has three stores: in Ocho Rios, St. Thomas and Cozumel, which also offer sunglasses, watches and jewelry, scarves and leather goods. Cariloha helps you stay stylish and comfortable during your cruise while helping the planet, too. www.cariloha.com 87

(personal style) Sniffing Out Your Favorite Scent

Guy’s guy Matthew McConaughey

Even if it’s hot outside, you’ll be as fragrant as a flower.

John Shearer/Wireimage.com

Your fragrance says so much about your personality. Are you fresh and cheerful? Warm and sensual? Whoever you are, there’s a perfume that captures your spirit. Master perfumer Yves Saint Laurent can help you discover the right scent to keep for yourself or give to someone special.

The

Perfect Shave

By DaNIELLE CoHEN

For healthy skin and a smooth shave, follow a regimen that puts your best face forward. The most important factor in shaving is to be sure the blade always feels like new, says Dr. Steven Rosen, creator of Tend Skin shaving products. “As soon as it loses that new feel, replace it. Otherwise, it will start dragging on the skin and cause abrasions and inflammation, which can exacerbate the ingrown-hair problem.”

Are you an optimist?

Paris d’ Yves Saint Laurent Eau de Printemps is the scent of optimism and feminity—dressed in a delicate pink designed to evoke spring’s rosy freshness.

Experts advise cleansing the face daily with a mild soap and exfoliating often to prevent ingrown hairs—just not immediately before or after shaving. You’ll get a closer shave if you first moisturize, which encourages hairs to stand out, advises Heather Firmin, licensed cosmetologist and director of educator development at Beauty Basics Inc., which owns nine Aveda Institutes in the southeastern United States. Using a circular motion, lather up with a moisturizing glycerin-based shave cream. When shaving, Firmin says, use hot water to hydrate and soften the skin and beard.

A complex study?

Are you intense?

Several factors can cause razor burn and skin irritation, including stretching the skin, shaving against the grain of hair growth, applying too much pressure and raking the razor over skin repeatedly. The best razor has a replaceable sharp blade (which should be discarded after approximately five uses) and a balanced, weighted handle, says Eric Malka, CEO of The Art of Shaving.

Find your fabulous scent at duty-free shops in port and onboard.

Ditch the aftershave, says Dr. Judith Silverstein, of the Atlanta Center for Dermatologic Diseases: “Aftershaves often contain alcohol, which can be drying and irritating. Sunscreens and mild moisturizers are a better choice to soothe and rejuvenate skin.”

La Nuit De L’Homme Yves Saint Laurent Eau de Toilette is made of olfactory clashes. This fresh oriental fragrance is for the man who possesses intensity, sensuality and irresistible charm.

Yves Saint Laurent's newest fragrance is Elle Intense Eau de Parfum, with notes of lychee, peony, pink berries, freesia, jasmine and vetiver.

Creative origins by ANTHEA TURNER

Just as a painter moves us with a masterpiece on canvas, these worldfamous designers have moved us with their wearable art. Driven by the beauty of nature and the love in their lives, they create watches and jewelry to be treasured for generations.

Elements of creations by Philip Stein, Yvel, Kabana and Ernst Benz

94

(life style) Will Stein

Owner and founder of Philip Stein Watches Along with his wife, Rina, Will Stein masterfully created a luxury timepiece that has been shown to enhance one’s overall sleep and wellbeing. As one of the most successful watch companies, Philip Stein has changed the way people think and feel about watches. Right: Will Stein. Above: Will Stein; with his wife and business partner, Rina above.

What is your passion outside of timepieces? I love beautiful and interesting timepieces, but at Philip Stein a huge focus for us is the frequency technology in each watch. I am a student of frequencies, how beneficial they are for everyone. Outside of running a successful watch business, sharing the information about frequency technology with everyone I meet is a second rewarding career. What is your favorite vacation spot? Home with my wife and business partner, Rina, and our son Ben. What is your favorite sound? My son Ben running to meet me at the door.

Isaac Levy

Founder and designer of Yvel We witness Isaac Levy’s brilliance and passion through his pearl designs. Along with his wife,Orna, Levy is one half of an award-winning jewelry designing team called Yvel (Levy spelled backward).

Photos CoURtEsY oF jason MillstEin

What’s your favorite word? Harmony.

Where is the best place to design jewelry? In pearl farms, when my wife and I find amazing and unusual pearls. There is no more magical moment, when the oyster opens and you see nature’s creation at its best. That moment the inspiration becomes emotional. What do you consider your theme song? "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong What word describes you best? Passion. What is your favorite pastime outside of jewelry design? Being together with my wife and two children—anywhere, anytime, anyplace—doing nothing or conquering the world.

Above: Orna and Isaac receiving the Town and Country International Pearl Designer Award. Right: With their children.

(life style) Stavros and his pet donkey, also named Stavros.

Stavros Eleftheriou

Founder and designer of Kabana As founder of Kabana inlay jewelry, Stavros Eleftheriou is smitten with colors given to us by nature—the bright hues of flowers in his garden, natural stones from the earth and the vibrant sea life found on the ocean floor. With a personality as colorful as his collections, Eleftheriou’s enthusiasm translates into vibrant, wearable art that begs to be touched. Where is the best place to design jewelry? In my 8-acre secret garden. I start my day there and end my day there, and I love to design there. What is your favorite pastime outside of jewelry design? Being in Mykonos with my wife of 30 years, kids and friends. We go to the beach and go out at night. Mykonos is where you smell life! What is your secret indulgence? All stones that come from the earth. I am a collector of stones and have thousands.

Leonid Khankin

Managing director and creative director of Ernst Benz A second-generation watchmaker, Leonid Khankin first began working on watches as a child. Today, at the helm of this iconic brand, he designs and overlooks the manufacturing of timepieces that celebrate the art of watchmaking, the joy of travel and the career of the Swiss watch company’s legendary founder, Ernst Benz. Does watchmaking run in the family? My father is one of the most talented watchmakers of his generation, being formally trained in St. Petersburg, Russia in his teens. My heritage gave me the ability to do what I do with Ernst Benz. How did you start in the watch industry? When I was 6 or 7, I would accompany my father to his watch repair shop and I would watch him work for hours and was fascinated with watches. I began fixing complicated movements in my early teens and fixing highly complicated vintage mechanical timepieces such as Patek Philippe in my late teens.

Leonid Khankin

if you were not a watchmaker, what would you be? Making watches is all I have ever wanted to do. What is your favorite vacation spot? Rome is an amazing city and special to me as we lived there when I was little, after my parents left Russia in the late 1970s.

Antigua and Barbuda continues to attract an A-list of international celebrities who are choosing to make Antigua and Barbuda their home away from home! Homeowners include renowned Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. Armani’s spectacular hillside complex on Antigua’s west coast is designed with family and guests in mind, and is said to reflect the same elegance and simplicity for which the designer is known. Last year’s Italian-language film, Un’estate ai Caraibi (Summer in the Caribbean) highlighted Antigua’s beautiful scenery and historical sites. Also featured in the film is Jumby Bay, the private-island playground of writer Ken Follett, actor Robert DeNiro and singer Mariah Carey. Un’estate ai Caraibi’s directors and cast stayed at the Italian-owned The Inn at English Harbour, as well as Carlisle Bay and the Antigua Yacht Club Marina.
