When’s the last time you checked the time? Not on your computer monitor or your iPhone, but on the watch so elegantly displayed upon your wrist?

In an odd way, time-telling has come full circle from the days when the clock and, in mobile moments, the pocket watch were the typical methods of checking for the hour. Both were prized more for their eloquent elegance than for their precision. Only in the industrialized society, when “time is money” became the motto of the assembly line, did precise time-telling become really relevant. Yet the watch remains. And the wrist-bound teller of time that’s most relevant today expresses, not our zeal to be up to the minute, but our enduring appreciation of the old-school values of craftsmanship and extraordinary attention to detail. The watch we choose tells the world, paradoxically, that we’re not beholden to the clock; that we are making our own destiny in our own time; that we demand beauty that matches or surpasses functionality. The right watch proclaims that while the rat race may be swift, we’re setting our own pace. The watch that best expresses who we are and how far we’ve come doesn’t say, "Time is money."

For some, childhood paves the way for a future as a collector. Think Barbies, stickers,

snow globes and key chains. Others take up the hobby later on, in the pursuit of the finer things in life. Think antiques, art, coins and sports memorabilia. Yet regardless of how or when the collecting bug bites, the common denominator is an avid interest, one in which pleasure or satisfaction is derived from the act of collecting. For Jeff Gassman, owner of an IT consultancy in Minneapolis, passion for collecting emerged slowly. Growing up, he followed in his father’s footsteps accumulating trading cards, but eventually lost interest. An appreciation for unique vintages and a soft spot for Napa—a destination he has frequented—led Gassman to begin what is now an extensive wine collection. But when mere curiosity drew him into a Rodeo Drive watch retailer while visiting Los Angeles about six years ago, he immediately became fascinated with watch ➤

timeless + style What initially draws people to collecting? They may have a sense of nostalgia, or artistic appreciation of a particular item (coins, stamps, antique watches), which holds special significance, says Beth Klein, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist in Weston, Florida.

mechanics and began researching the industry. Today, Gassman boasts a collection of seven timepieces with unique movements and complications valued at approximately $70,000. He finds the practice of watch collecting equally as alluring as the timepieces themselves. “It is a very well-respected hobby, as there is an extraordinary amount of detail involved,” he says.

In fact, collecting is popular among many celebrities, including Elton John (art), Demi Moore (dolls), Jay Leno (cars), Jamie Lee Curtis (photographs), George Clooney (motorcycles) and Angelina Jolie (antique knives).

openings and product debuts. “I’ve met CEOs of corporations, executive directors of non-profits, athletes, actors, models," says Gassman, who has rubbed elbows with A-listers such as Michael Jordan and John Travolta.

“There’s also the excitement in the chase,” says Dr. Klein. Finding another piece to add to a collection can produce an intense sense of fulfillment, achievement and pleasure. “There is satisfaction in achieving a tangible and self-directed goal—an expression of self which reinforces one’s own sense of style and choice," she says.

herself. She’s taken Hollywood by storm with spellbinding performances in a stunning range of comedies, dramas and action epics. No wonder Cruz has been a muse to legendary directors like Woody Allen and Pedro Almodóvar, not to mention stealing the hearts of some of her sexy leading men: Tom Cruise, Matt Damon and Matthew McConaughey.

I don’t want to get to the set and feel like I know what I’m doing and be very secure. That would really scare me. Every time I walk on a movie set I feel like it’s my first time.” Cruz is equally ambivalent about being gorgeous, in spite of the fact that she’s a stunning presence, not only on the big screen but also on the red carpet in sexy designer gowns, and as a spokeswoman for Lancome’s Trésor perfume. “I think it’s important not to believe in one form of beauty,” she says. “I see it in many women, no matter how old they are. I hope that movies and commercials will reflect more and more the reality of life.” As a style icon, Cruz makes no apologies for having a closet brimming with expensive heels and haute couture. “I don’t feel guilty because they send them to me so it’s okay,” she says. “And I give a lot away. I’ve kept some things in case someday I have a daughter, so that she can have some things when she’s older, dresses and some things that have been made for me.” Now, the Oscar winner, who became the first Spanish actress to receive a coveted star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2011, is finding some time to explore her roles as the wife of Spanish heartthrob Javier Bardem, who has his own Academy Award®, and mother to their baby son, Leonardo.

La Buena Vida Her journey to superstardom has not been easy. Cruz grew up in Madrid, along with her younger brother and sister, where her mother was a hairdresser and her father a salesman. “I don’t know how my mother did it, raising my sister, brother and I,” she says. “She was a working mother . . . but she always had breakfast and dinner ready for us. I didn’t grow up in a rich family. We didn’t have any extras. But I never felt I was deprived of anything.” Cruz began taking ballet lessons as a child and imagined a life as a dancer, “but, after many years, it was too demanding and I had a sort of nervous breakdown. That’s when I decided to try acting.” That serendipitous choice defined Cruz’s future. She became a sensation in Spain after her debut as a teen in Jamón, Jamón and went on to rave reviews for Belle Epoque. Then she got international attention teaming up with Oscar-winning filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar. Suddenly, paparazzi and fans followed her everywhere. ➤

Feeling the Passion The aura of celebrity quickly evaporated when Cruz landed in America. “When I arrived I didn’t speak any English,” she remembers, “and nobody knew who I was. I had to struggle to make myself understood and people would tease me about my accent. Now, I feel much more relaxed. I feel that I can understand 99 percent in a conversation. But it’s been a fight.” Cruz overcame the language barrier with her dazzling talent and unwavering determination to get the roles she wanted. “From the beginning I tried not to make any compromises and not to make anything that I didn’t feel for,” she says. “I have to be moved by a character. It can be in different ways, make me happy, or make me cry, or make me want to vomit, but make me feel something.” After taking home the Academy Award®, Cruz starred opposite Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and scored another Oscar nod with her show-stopping singing and dancing in Nine.

Designer gowns seem to take on a new aura of star-power when they’re worn by Penelope Cruz. When she won her Academy Award®, she was breathtaking in vintage white Balmain; at the German premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, she wowed jaded photogs on the red carpet in a vivid scarlet, long-sleeve Armani Privé gown, above; and at the film’s London premiere, she was stunning in white Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci. She says with a smile, “Working as an actress you are having a relationship with the fashion world whether you like it or not.” But Cruz confesses that her biggest weakness is shoes. “I have maybe too

Appearing in more than 50 films—since making her debut at 16—has taken its toll on Cruz. “You want to play characters that are challenging and it can leave you physically and emotionally exhausted,” she says. “But I have a real passion for acting and there is always more to learn. You can never get to a point where you feel you know everything. When I’m 80 years old, if I decide to be working, there is always more to learn, so that keeps you young.” ➤

Cruz is as enthusiastic about her family as she is about her career. As a mother, “you feel so much love in the first moment you see your baby. It’s an experience that transforms you forever.” She reveals few details about her relationship with Bardem, with whom she fell in love while filming Vicky Cristina Barcelona. “I just don’t talk about my personal life. I feel that it is my right to save that for myself. It’s always a trap. It’s not natural to share things with somebody that you don’t know. I did that when I was a teenager. Then I would get so upset because I would talk about a movie I was in and, then, all I read about was something personal that I said.” Looking back on her career, Cruz reflects, “As woman who’s Spanish I think I’ve opened some doors. Now, we need to open more doors for all women. Acting was a dream for me growing up, and I go to do it again and again and make a living. Every time I look at my Oscar I see all of the faces, remember all of the names, of all the people who helped me.”

At 37, she doesn’t seem worried about the passing years. “I think birthdays are always something to celebrate,” she says. “I am looking forward to every step of the way I take in life. That is something I take from my Spanish roots, the way we look at getting old. I never want to be afraid of that, change is good.” And what will guide her on that journey? “I think—how do you say it—laughing is the best medicine,” Cruz says with a grin. “It can help you release whatever you’re holding inside. Following the mantra of affordable luxury, Rebecca is distinguished by the modern materials and styles used to continually reinvent the brand. What inspires you? I find inspiration from the world around me and from my personal experiences. Sometimes it’s a trip far away, a movie or even an image or a shape that gets my attention in a particular way. From that moment, my head starts to blend the various inspirations, the process doesn’t stop until I have finished designing the various prototypes. What excites you most about the new 2012 collection? One of the most exciting elements of my work is application and use of alternative materials for making jewelry, like the case of the shimmering overlay used in the Half Moon and Griffe Moon Collections. What do you do for fun? I stay with my family, I travel a lot and I work. For me the work is part of the fun because, when I am working, I let out all my creativity. I could not think of my life without my work. In my spare time, I enjoy playing football with my sons or going for long bike rides. Living the good life…to me is driving my boat, exploring the beach and seas with my wife and my three sons.

My design mandate has been to youthfully reinvent classic important jewels. My collections are heavily influenced by enchanting deco pieces from the 1920s, combined with modern day influences from architecture and my travels. Several of my collections draw inspiration from my love for clean lines and the New York City skyline. What excites you most about the new 2012 collection? I am thrilled about using Crown of Light diamonds in select designs from my Signature Oval Collection. The collection is comprised of nine pieces including a bracelet, earrings, rings and necklaces. My favorite piece from the collection is the Signature Oval Pavé drop diamond earrings.

What do you do for fun? Karaoke. I alternate back and forth between “Rebel Yell” and “Highway Man” as my favorite karaoke songs. I also love golfing with my husband and brothers, and I can’t wait to teach my daughter, Arabella. Who is your favorite clothing designer? I love Catherine Malandrino, Carlos Miele and J. Mendel. I also love the great everyday pieces from Zara and J. Crew. These days I wear shoes, handbags and jewels from my own lines almost exclusively! 52

I fell in love with diamonds long before I started my eight-year career in the Caribbean helping people buy them. Sure, a diamond is stunning and never loses its beauty, but I think its true value lies in the story it can tell.

The items in your jewelry box serve as a scrapbook, which tells the story of your life.

My diamond story started well over 100 years ago. My great-grandfather in Austria had inherited a tiny diamond that was set in ugly, tarnished brass. As the years went on, he married and later passed the diamond to his son, my grandfather “Poppa Lou.” In the 1940s, Poppa Lou moved to England with this—let’s be frank—not-too-pretty diamond ring and little else. He met and fell in love with his future bride, my Nanna Fay, and years later, my father, Allan, was born and raised in London’s East End. When my parents met and fell in love, my grandfather offered the ring to my father, who, as you can imagine, was a little unsure of what to do with it. Should he turn it into a small diamond stud? Make it an accent diamond for the engagement ring? My father took it to a jeweler to melt the brass. That’s when it got interesting. Instead of a tiny chip of a diamond, as everyone had believed it to be for so many years, the jeweler found—hidden upside down— a breathtaking 2-carat diamond! Only the cullet, the very bottom of the diamond, had been showing. My family later learned that the diamond was set this way to keep the diamond’s worth a secret when it was transported from country to country during World War I, and then again during World War II, when anything of value might be confiscated. The diamond’s true beauty and value remained a secret until my father presented my mother with her engagement ring—created from the most dazzling 2-carat diamond I have ever seen! My mother’s diamond—which will one day be mine—has been through times of war, peace, childbirth, silly arguments, laughter and, most important, more than 100 years of love and tradition. Your diamond stories can begin right here, on your vacation, and will last not just your lifetime, but those of the family members you have yet to meet.

What excites you most about the new 2012 collection? Similar to the way a teenager feels about their first shiny new car, new collections have always been one of my biggest thrills. I know that even though our 2012 collections will be comprised of surprise and innovation, Raymond Weil will always follow the grain of its horological watchmaking DNA. What is your guilty pleasure? Chocolate is definitely my guilty pleasure and it is a

family story. My mother used to bake the best chocolate cake I ever tasted and we call it the “Bernheim chocolate cake.” The recipe has been passed through generations and I am always looking for the exact taste I remember as a child. Ernst Benz is actually approaching its 50th anniversary. Our anniversary celebration will be marked by the release of new models, expansion into new markets, and a very special biography that we are working on to tell the story of our founder, Mr. Benz, his life and career.

Co-owner and co-designer, Bremont If the English brothers (that's Nick sitting on the wing, with brother, Giles, at left), were not designing watches, they would likely spend all of their time restoring and flying vintage aircraft. Their father passed down his love for all things mechanical to them. What inspires you? Our father was a huge inspiration. We spent so much time making things with him in the workshop including planes, boats, cars, and restoring old clocks. He was an incredible engineer who loved all things mechanical. . . and we are still lucky enough to be flying his old planes. Our father died in 1995 in a plane crash while practicing for an air show, and I broke around 25 bones (I was in the front seat). This incident changed our family’s life and it was the tipping point for Giles and me. We realized very quickly that we wanted to do something we enjoy. Life is short. What is one of your favorite watch models? The creamfaced ALT1-C was the first watch I wore and one of my pet designs. It's very simple and understated. I am sure Giles would say the black ALT1-P for the same reason.

What happens when a childhood favorite meets an adult indulgence? You get a dessert trend that has bakers everywhere tastefully combining two vices—sweets and liquor—into one decadent concoction. Whether it’s sorbet spiked with rum, chocolate cake infused with vodka or a cinnamon roll gushing with Godiva caramel liqueur (mmm!), there’s a version to please anyone reliving their childhood with a grown-up twist.

Ten years ago, Jon Walkenstein began putting bourbon into chocolate walnut cookies and drizzled them with raspberry liquor sauce. “As soon as people started tasting them, I knew I was on to something,” he said. Now, his Drunken Chefs bakery in Miami Beach serves a distillery of bourbon and rum balls and other alcohol-spiked confections. The Caribbean is famous for partying, as well as producing sweet and saucy classics such as the banana daiquiri, the piña colada and the rum cake. In the United States, however, only 19 states allow the sale of desserts containing alcohol. Even if you don’t find yourself in a locale that makes and sells these yummy combinations, we can show you how to create your own. Spike up the flavor of desserts with rum or other liquor, like this creative baker does.

Lemon Drop Cupcakes Batter INGREDIENTS FOR 12 full-size cupcakes 3/4 cup self-rising flour 2/3 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened

1 cup sugar 2 large eggs, at room temperature 1/4 cup milk 1/8 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice 1/8 cup vodka zest of 1 lemon

Batter Directions: Preheat oven to 350Â° F. Line a 1/2 cup, 12-muffin tin with cupcake baking cups. In a small bowl, combine both of the flours and set aside. In a large bowl, on the medium speed of an electric mixer, cream the butter until smooth. Add the sugar gradually and beat until fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add the eggs 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the dry ingredients in 3 parts, alternating with the milk, lemon juice and vodka. With each addition, beat until the ingredients are incorporated, but do not overbeat. Use a rubber spatula to scrape down the batter in the mixing bowl to make sure all of the ingredients are well blended. Using an ice cream scoop or a large spoon, carefully pour the batter into the cupcake liners, filling them about 2/3 full. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a cake tester inserted into the center of the cupcake comes out clean. Remove the cupcakes tray from the oven and cool on a wire rack for 15 minutes. Remove them from the tin and cool completely on a wire rack before icing.

Lemon Vodka Buttercream Frosting: 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened 3 1/2 to 4 cups confectionersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; sugar 1/8 cup vodka 1/8 cup lemon juice 1 teaspoon milk Place the butter in a large mixing bowl. Add about half (2 cups) of the sugar and then the vodka & lemon juice. On the medium speed of an electric mixer, beat until smooth and creamy, about 3 minutes. Add the milk then gradually add the remaining sugar, 1 cup at a time, beating well after each addition (about 2 minutes), until the icing is thick enough to be of good spreading consistency. You may not need to add all of the sugar depending on your sweet tooth. Voila! NOTE: Icing can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Throwing a Caribbean-themed party is a great way to show off your photos and fabulous finds from your exotic vacation. It can also be a chance for you and your guests to help the residents of some of the islands you’ve visited.

Your gathering can be more meaningful if it doubles as a fundraiser. When sending out your invitations, be sure to let your friends know that you are raising money for a charity close to your heart. Guests can also contribute canned goods or clothing, depending on the organization’s needs. Since this is also a fundraiser, don’t forget to offer information and display appropriate photos about the charity or cause so they can get a sense of the importance of their participation. Running raffles and holding auctions for cool prizes make it enjoyable for guests. Host a 50/50 raffle in which the person with the winning ticket takes half the money collected and the other half goes to the charity. Or you can buy items on your trip (T-shirts, hats, trinkets) and put them in a basket to raffle off. Party Time To get guests in the mood, use postcards from your travels as stationery (or simulate the postcard look) and encourage guests to dress in tropical attire. Fill your space with an explosion of tropical colors. Choose colorful tableware and linens, display enlarged photos from the islands

you visited, and light coconut-scented candles. Play calypso or Latin music and get everyone up for a game of limbo. Give party foods a tropical twist by making a mango glaze for ribs or a pork loin; serve coconut shrimp on skewers poked into a melon half. Sprinkle jerk seasoning onto chicken wings and mix up a batch of rum punch (see recipe). Serve plantain chips in the brim of a straw hat and line your platters with a real or silk banana leaf or palm frond to enhance the theme. Send guests home with Caribbean souvenirs, and don’t forget to send notes to thank everyone for their generous donations.

RUM PUNCH

Sweeten the Celebration (8-10 Servings) 1 cup fresh (not concentrated) lime juice 1 cup grenadine syrup 2 cups Jamaican dark rum 1 cup light rum 2 cups pineapple juice 2 cups orange juice Combine all ingredients, chill and serve in a large punch bowl. Garnish with pineapple wedges or orange slices.
