A Sioux Falls Summer Staple: The 2025 Pro Am Jam A

EGOLF FESTIVAL WHERE FUN MEETS PHILANTHROPY

ach summer, the Pro Am Jam brings the perfect blend of golf and entertainment to life—and 2025 was no exception. Held August 7–10 at the Country Club of Sioux Falls, this year marked the 13th annual event, and once again, it proved to be far more than just a day on the green. With competitive play, unforgettable concerts, and a meaningful mission, the Pro Am Jam continues to grow in both scale and impact.

Hosted by First Dakota, the Pro Am Jam was designed from the beginning to be more than just another golf tournament. “We didn’t want just another golf tournament,” organizers shared. “That’s why we created a golf festival.”

The golf festival featured 52 three-man teams, each paired with a professional golfer from the Dakotas Tour, competing in stroke play format with both individual and team scoring. The scenic course at the Country Club of Sioux Falls provided the perfect backdrop for four days of competition, camaraderie, and community.

But the energy on the course was matched only by the excitement that followed each evening, with concerts that wowed a crowd of 3,000 attendees. This year’s entertainment lineup was headlined by Rev Run and Brothers Osborne on Friday night, followed by Charles Kelley of Lady A and

Jake Owen. The intimate concert setting offered attendees a rare up-close experience with national talent—something the organizers plan to build on in 2026. “Our goal is to keep surprising attendees with the level of entertainment we can provide while still maintaining that intimate feel.”

At the heart of the Pro Am Jam is its mission to give back. Proceeds from the event benefit the South Dakota Community Foundation, with annual contributions typically ranging from $50,000 to $100,000. The Foundation was chosen because of its broad reach—it supports a variety of organizations across First Dakota’s service territory through the Stronger Communities Fund, helping ensure a lasting impact in the communities they serve.

Participation in the Pro Am Jam is exclusive, typically reserved for sponsors and members of the Country Club of Sioux Falls. These individuals not only enjoy access to the golf festival and concerts but also play a direct role in supporting South Dakota communities. Those interested in getting involved can reach out to dstatema@firstdakota.com for more information.

As First Dakota puts it: “We not only focus on providing the best banking option available (ask Forbes—best bank in SD), but we like to have a little fun along the way.” n

Love in FULL COLOR

A romantic fall day trip through South Dakota

As summer fades and the air turns crisp, South Dakota transforms into a breathtaking tapestry of fall colors—making it the perfect backdrop for a romantic day trip. Whether you’re newly in love or celebrating years together, a scenic autumn escape offers the chance to slow down, reconnect, and soak in nature’s beauty side by side.

To kick off your day in the Sioux Falls area, begin with an unhurried stroll through Falls Park, where the Big Sioux River cascades over rugged rocks surrounded by trees ablaze in shades of red, orange, and gold. It’s the perfect setting to enjoy a quiet morning together. Pick up a warm drink from one of the charming local coffee shops within walking distance and take in the peaceful rhythm of the water as you map out your fall adventure.

Just a short drive away, Palisades State Park presents dramatic pink quartzite cliffs rising above Split Rock Creek, crowned with vibrant fall foliage. Paddle together in a kayak for a unique view from the water, or try a guided rock-climbing adventure for a thrilling twist. If time allows, head south to Newton Hills State Park, where dense forests and winding trails provide another stunning spot to take in the changing leaves.

If you’re craving a longer scenic drive, the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway in the Black Hills is a must. Though a bit farther for a day trip, it’s worth the early start. This winding route takes you through tunnels, granite spires, and panoramic overlooks, with fall colors painting every curve. Pack a picnic and stop at Sylvan Lake for lunch—its mirror-like waters reflect the season’s brilliance.

Just beyond, Spearfish Canyon offers one of the most breathtaking fall displays in the state. Golden aspens and birch trees light up the canyon walls, contrasting beautifully with the deep greens of spruce and pine. Spearfish Creek meanders below, adding a serene soundtrack to your visit. Whether you choose to hike to misty waterfalls, pause at scenic overlooks, or cruise the 19-mile Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway between Spearfish and Cheyenne Crossing, you’ll be surrounded by autumn’s finest.

These western destinations are just a glimpse of the fall magic waiting in the Black Hills, where winding roads and wildlife sightings make every moment memorable.

So grab your favorite flannel, pack a thermos of cider, and hit the road. South Dakota’s fall landscapes offer a peaceful retreat and the perfect backdrop for love, laughter, and unforgettable memories. Autumn here is more than a season—it’s a celebration of change, beauty, and the joy of slowing down together. n

ARE YOU BUILDING WEALTH— OR BUILDING A TAX BILL?

Tax planning in your 30s and 40s matters more than you think.

If you’re like most people, you’ve been taught that the best path to building your retirement nest egg is simple: work hard, save as much as possible, and take full advantage of pre-tax savings options. While that sounds straightforward, the reality is far more complex thanks to the intricacies of tax law.

Many hardworking families focus on “saving taxes today” without asking the critical follow-up question: at what cost tomorrow? While pre-tax contributions can look like a win in the moment, relying solely on them may push you into higher tax brackets later—costing you significantly more in the long run.

What often goes unnoticed is that building your financial plan with a deliberate, tax-efficient approach could reduce lifetime taxes by thousands.

For Jill Mollner, MBA, CFP®, Wealth Advisor at Cornerstone Financial Solutions in Sioux Falls, guiding women through personalized financial planning is both her profession and her passion. “Tax rules shift, income changes, markets move, and life happens,” Jill explains. “That’s why tax planning in

your 30s and 40s isn’t about making one big decision—it’s about creating a rhythm that works within your financial plan.”

Jill emphasizes that blending pre-tax, Roth, and taxable accounts with favorable long-term capital gains rates gives you far greater flexibility. This balance allows you to choose when and how much to withdraw in retirement, ultimately shrinking your lifetime tax bill and keeping more of your money working for you. “When people think about building wealth, they often focus on earning more and saving more,” she says. “But if you ignore taxes while you’re building wealth, you could be setting yourself up for a heavy tax burden later. Even if you excel at ‘earn more, save more,’ it’s tax planning that compounds over decades and gives you real control down the road.”

See the numbers for yourself.

Read a hypothetical case study at mycfsgroup.com/taxesand-building-wealth. Married couple, age 40, $200k household income. $4.36M at retirement with an all-pre-tax strategy vs $4.68M with a diversified, balanced tax strategy.

Remember

• Cutting taxes today is good; planning taxes over time is better.

• Pre-tax savings reduce Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) now but may create a future tax liability.

• Tax diversification is just as important as investment diversification.

• AGI control is wealth control: more flexibility means easier management of brackets, surcharges, and credits.

The bottom line? Building wealth isn’t just about growing your accounts—it’s about making sure taxes don’t erode your efforts.

Schedule a Tax-Smart Comprehensive Retirement Review. Jill and the Cornerstone team can help you map where you are, what to adjust, and plan a practical, balanced tax strategy for long-term wealth building.

FOR FLAWLESS MAKEUP YOUR PREP STEPS

It is essential in makeup application to follow the correct sequence to ensure every layer is seamless and stays in place. You will always want to start with a preparatory skin care layer.

SKIN. First, apply any anti-aging creams, spot treatments, toners, or serums: Then, apply moisturizer to keep your skin fresh and to help your foundation stay smooth all day. After moisturizing, apply a thin layer of sunscreen to protect your face from harsh UV rays. Lastly, dab a dab of primer, which will help keep your foundation in place.

Tip: If your primer contains SPF, skip the sunscreen step!

FACE. Next up is the makeup layer. Begin by applying a modest layer of foundation all over your face. Use a clean makeup brush or blending sponge to prevent breakouts caused by applying makeup with your fingers or dirty brushes. Next, gently blend concealer under your eyes and press a light layer of powder over the concealer and any other particularly oily spots on your face. Let the powder sit for a few minutes before buffing out the excess powder with a clean brush. To finish this layer, pat a touch of blush to the highest point of your cheekbone and blend upwards to lift your features. 1 2

EYES. Eye makeup can be challenging to keep in place, but by applying primer or a dab of concealer to your eyelids, your eyeshadow and eyeliner will stay in place all day long! Blend the primer all over your eyelid and wait a moment for it to get slightly tacky. Add 2-3 colors of eyeshadow for the perfect natural smoky eye. Start with your lightest tone all over the eyelid, then add a medium shade to your crease, and finish by adding a touch of a darker shade to the outer corner of your eye. Blend all colors into your crease and buff the application using a clean, fluffy eyeshadow brush. Thinly line your upper eyelid with eyeliner to make your eyes pop, and finish by curling your eyelashes and applying mascara.

LIPS. To pull the whole look together, you’ll want to add some color to your lips. Begin with a gentle lip scrub to remove dead or dry skin. Then apply lip balm to moisturize your lips. Let that absorb. Blot away any excess lip balm to protect your lipstick from separating. Find a lip liner color that matches or complements your lipstick. Thinly outline your lip shape before finalizing your look with lipstick. If you really want your makeup to stay secured in place for the whole night, give your face a conservative spritz of setting spray. By following these steps, you’ll be ready to take on the town and look flawless doing so! n

What’s Trendy? FALL 2025

FASHION

Ihope you kept those babydoll shirts and low-rise jeans from the early 2000s! Because, baby, Y2K is back in. If you haven’t seen the news, Abercrombie & Fitch has released its back-to-school line, and it’s full of all the popular designs we remember wearing from 2005 to 2012. You’ve guessed it! Crazy color combinations, layers on layers, and accessories galore are totally back in style.

To reestablish your Y2K roots, you’ll want to add some electric color to your closet. Neutrals alone won’t cut it this fall. Try combining a bright blue tank top under a tan or grey off-theshoulder sweater. Pair the combo with your low-rise boot-cut jeans, a chunky sweater, and Ugg boots that have been hiding in the back of your closet for years. Or maybe you want to match a flash of bright green with tan or navy blue? Perhaps sneak a peek of pale yellow with your browns and dark greens to brighten your look and catch everyone’s eye.

When it comes to accessorizing, think back to 2007. We’re talking chunky faux leather handbags, infinity scarves, newsboy-style hats, and stacking beaded bracelets. Less is more, but you’ll want to make sure you have enough going on to complement your look. Think of adding a necklace with a medium-sized pendant to your swoop-necked sweater. You could stack some silver chunky bangles and studded bracelets to wear over the long sleeves of your flowy blouse. Keep warm this fall by wrapping a flannel scarf around your neck and shoulders. The options and combinations are limitless!

If you’re feeling stuck on what to wear to keep in style this season, look back at your photo albums from earlier this century to inspire your outfits for this fall and refresh your closet. It really is true when people say retro is in, and now is definitely the time to bring back all of your favorite clothes from the “simpler days.” n

FINANCIAL CONFIDENCE FOR WOMEN: EXPERT INSIGHTS ON

RETIREMENT AND WEALTH BUILDING

Women often face unique financial challenges while saving, investing, and preparing for retirement, but proactive planning is essential whether they are advancing careers, running businesses, or managing family.

We asked First Bank & Trust’s Kim Bank and Jordin Edwards, both WMS Relationship Managers, and Kelli Bullert, Senior Private Banker, to offer advice on career breaks, caregiving, catching up on savings, and navigating major financial transitions. Their guidance empowers women to take control of their financial future with confidence.

Q: WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON RETIREMENT PLANNING CHALLENGES FACED BY PROFESSIONAL WOMEN TODAY?

Kelli: One of the biggest challenges I see is that women often prioritize others, pausing careers for caregiving or working part-time. This can lead to lower lifetime earnings and smaller savings. Additionally, women live longer on average, meaning we need more retirement funds, not less. There is also often a confidence gap: many women feel uncertain about investing or planning, even when they are more than capable. The good news is these challenges can be solved with proactive planning.

Q: HOW CAN WOMEN CATCH UP IF THEY’VE STARTED SAVING LATER IN LIFE?

Kim: Women who start saving later in life still have powerful strategies available to catch up and build a secure financial future. For example, taking full advantage of an employer’s

401(k) match or maximizing retirement contributions can lead to a large portfolio over time. While it’s tempting to chase high returns to make up for lost time, taking on too much risk can backfire. Using age-appropriate asset allocations helps balance growth and stability.

Q: WHAT RECENT LEGISLATIVE CHANGES SHOULD WOMEN BE AWARE OF?

Jordin: The Secure 2.0 Act brought in a lot of changes to retirement plans, and most people don’t realize how helpful some of them can be—especially for women. You now have more flexibility around Roth accounts and required withdrawals, which means more control over when you tap into your savings. That’s huge when you think about longer lifespans and income that isn’t always steady. Additional changes include bigger catch-up contributions, which is a gift during peak earning years, and a student loan matching provision that allows employers to make matching contributions to an employee’s retirement account based on their qualified student loan payments, helping women juggle student loan debt and building retirement savings at the same time. While not flashy changes, they quietly give women more breathing room and more options, which makes a real difference in the long run.

Q: HOW DO YOU HELP WOMEN NAVIGATE MAJOR FINANCIAL TRANSITIONS?

Kelli: Financial transitions can be overwhelming, but they can also be empowering with the right guidance. It is important for

women to understand their financial picture, establish clear goals, and build a roadmap forward. Depending on someone’s scenario, I would suggest focusing on understanding assets and setting up independent banking, planning for both immediate needs and long-term stability. It’s also important to protect wealth and anticipate tax implications, while aligning investments. Education and planning can bring confidence in these moments.

With the right strategies and a supportive team, women can address obstacles head-on and begin building a secure future. To put these insights into practice, consider the following tips to help strengthen your financial foundation and foster lasting confidence.

• Prioritize your financial future: Plan proactively, even if you’ve taken career breaks or worked part-time.

• Maximize retirement savings: Use employer matches and catch-up contributions to grow your portfolio.

GAME Gourmet

A HUNTER’S COOKING GUIDE

Hunting is all fun and games until you find yourself with a freezer full of game meat and zero creative ideas on how to prepare it for a delicious meal. Ground deer meat, elk steaks, pheasant cubes, duck breasts - the list goes on and on. The standard “add a can of cream of mushroom soup” can be a lifesaver, but also somewhat repetitive and unappetizing. With these recipes, you can elevate your culinary skills by making these delicious, gourmet-style, game-based meals that say POW! n

Melt-In-Your-Mouth Game Steaks

INGREDIENTS

• 2-3 Heaping spoonfuls of butter

• 2-3 Sprigs of fresh rosemary

• 3+ Cloves of fresh garlic (minced, to taste)

• 2 Elk or venison steaks

• Salt and pepper

DIRECTIONS

Sprinkle both sides of each elk steak with salt and pepper to taste.

Melt butter in a frying pan on low heat. Make sure it does not burn.

Add minced garlic to butter and stir frequently as the flavor steeps.

Add rosemary sprigs and stir continuously as the flavor steeps.

Add steaks to the melted butter concoction and increase the heat to medium.

Allow steaks to cook for about 4 minutes on each side for a medium or medium-well cooked, depending on the size of your steaks.

Serve with your choice of sides!

Lightly toss together the pheasant, sausage, rice, and mushroom mixture. Pour the sauce over and toss again.

A HOME DESIGNED FOR FAMILY

The Nielson family builds a luxurious haven for living, entertaining, and relaxing.

For the Nielsons, homebuilding isn’t just their business—it’s their passion. Owner of KN Construction, Kelly Nielson, and his wife, Tina, created their forever home for their family—children Miah, Colton, Connor, and Cali—just two years ago in a new development they built on the southern edge of Sioux Falls.

Kelly recalls, “We purchased the land when it was still a cornfield and dug the pond with the vision of building a small community where families could enjoy all the amenities we were planning.” Beyond its beauty, the pond also provides a practical benefit—water for the neighborhood’s sprinkler systems, trees, and landscaping.

Typically focused on building homes for others, Kelly admits that creating one for his own family was an eyeopener. “It was a very unique experience for us, since we were the customers. It gave us the chance to see what our team does exceptionally well and where we could continue to improve. Tina, who isn’t involved in the dayto-day, was thrilled with the process. It was especially exciting for her because this was the first time she could design and build her own home.”

The result is a stunning modern home spanning 5,000 square feet with five bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths. Soaring ceilings and walls of windows flood the space with natural light. Kelly explains, “We really wanted to bring the view into as many rooms as possible. Looking out at the pond and nature is both enjoyable and peaceful for us.”

In addition, the Nielson’s have an additional 3-stall outbuilding to house their yard tools and toys.

A MODERN, LIGHT-FILLED DESIGN

Tina embraced a timeless palette of grays, blacks, whites, and natural wood tones, and carried the theme throughout the interior and exterior. “Amy Evans, who works at Nielson Construction, was my main help when it came to the design of the house. She helped with almost everything from flooring and cabinets to decor and furniture. My taste is modern. I love lighter woods, natural light, and open spaces. I need windows and sun, and I just love how it turned out.”

The primary suite, along with two additional bedrooms, is located on the main level. Two more bedrooms are situated upstairs. In the primary suite, dramatic angled windows mirror the home’s roofline, creating a serene sanctuary for Kelly and Tina. “Because I wanted the blinds to disappear when we didn’t use them, we had to do some custom work to hide them in the attic when not in use.”

The ensuite bath is equally luxurious, featuring a freestanding soaking tub and a zero-entry shower with dual showerheads— one positioned lower just for Tina. A sprawling walk-in closet with custom cabinetry was another must-have, and a luxury that Tina loves.

Across the hall, a large functional yet stylish laundry room reflects the family’s lifestyle, especially since they entertain often. Down a private hallway are two more bedrooms and a full bath. The guest room has tranquil spa-like touches with luxury bedding and a serene atmosphere. “My mom says it feels like a spa—or an Airbnb. She loves to visit,” Tina shares. Their youngest daughter, Cali’s room is the only one with a different palette, painted in a delicate shade of pink.

SPACES WITH PERSONALITY

Practicality meets sentiment in the mudroom, which connects to the four-stall garage. One wall is clad in reclaimed wood from a family-owned barn. Over the years, guests have filled the planks with doodles and signatures—a playful, personal touch.

A sleek wood-and-metal bannister leads upstairs to the boys’ suite on the second level. Two large bedrooms, a bathroom, and a living space give them independence and room to hang out with friends.

FUNCTION IS THE FIRST THING I FOCUS ON WHEN DESIGNING A HOME, BUT PAIRING STYLE WITH FUNCTION IS JUST AS IMPORTANT. FAMILY IS A HUGE PART OF WHO WE ARE,

AND HAVING SPACE TO ENJOY EACH OTHER NOW AND IN THE FUTURE WAS CENTRAL TO THE DESIGN.

Back on the main level, the heart of the home is the kitchen, where the family spends the majority of its time. A massive island anchors the space, welcoming the whole family to gather. A hidden pantry, designed at Tina’s request, houses the oven and keeps kitchen messes out of sight. “We don’t like to smell what’s cooking—unless it’s brownies,” Tina laughs.

Off the kitchen, a home office and workout room provide convenience, while a sunken sunroom—one of Tina’s favorite retreats—features expansive windows and a three-sided fireplace.

A large entertainment area with a bar flows off the kitchen, which leads into Kelly’s “man cave.” The two-stall garage’s accent wall of rustic wood, installed by Kelly and Tina, and the vintage “Cocktail Bar” sign salvaged from another Sioux Falls business, adds whimsy and character to their room.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

From the man cave, a garage door opens to an amazing outdoor kitchen and a spectacular 2,000-square-foot patio. The space, complete with a wood-burning fireplace, heaters for chilly evenings, and multiple seating areas, overlooks the pond.

“We do love to entertain and be outside,” Kelly says. The patio also features a golf putting green, a dock, a bridge, and even a massive rope swing. Tina adds, “This is Kelly’s playground because family is so important to him. The kids absolutely love it here—and that is incredibly important to us.”

BUILDING COMMUNITY

Though their home is complete, the Nielsons continue to enhance the development. A walking trail around the pond is currently in progress, and a clubhouse with a swimming pool, hot tub, and indoor basketball and pickleball courts is being developed.

“We just love it here,” Tina smiles. “Our kids and their friends love it too—and that’s what this home is all about.” n

BREATHE EASY AND LOVE LIFE AGAIN

How to Beat Chronic Sinusitis and Reclaim Your Quality of Life

No doubt about it—sinusitis is a condition that can make everyday life absolutely miserable. Symptoms such as facial pressure and pain, nasal discharge, postnasal drainage, cough, congestion, loss of smell, fever, bad breath, tooth pain, and fatigue all add up to feeling downright lousy.

When those symptoms drag on for weeks—or even months— they can take a serious toll on your quality of life. And it doesn’t discriminate; this condition affects both children and adults. Fortunately, according to sinus specialist Dr. Micah Likness of Midwest ENT & Allergy in Sioux Falls, sinusitis is often manageable, and in many cases, treatable through medication or minimally invasive sinus surgery.

“Chronic sinusitis historically was thought to be caused by bacterial infection, but we now know that in most cases it is a chronic inflammatory condition of the lining of the sinuses,” explains Dr. Likness. “It may be caused by allergies triggering the inflammation, but not always. We start by evaluating patients with a comprehensive history and physical exam, as well as a nasal endoscopy, where we use a small camera to assess the anatomy of the nose and sinus drainage pathways.” This allows us to formulate an individualized plan of treatment that is best for the patient. Potential further work-up includes CT scan or allergy testing, both of which are available at our Midwest ENT office.”

For patients who don’t find relief with medications or have anatomical issues, minimally invasive surgery may be the next step. These procedures open the sinuses to restore natural drainage, relieving pressure and reducing the likelihood of infection.

“Surgery can be life-changing for patients who have suffered from chronic sinusitis,” says Dr. Likness. “It allows them to breathe through their nose again, resolves facial pressure and pain, can restore their sense of smell, and significantly decreases overall symptoms.”

One of the most reassuring aspects for patients is that many procedures can be performed right in the office, without general anesthesia. “It really puts patients at ease knowing the surgery is quick and can be done here,” notes Dr. Likness. “Most people are able to drive themselves home afterward and even return to work the next day.”

Minimally Invasive Nasal and Sinus Surgery Options at Midwest ENT & Allergy

• Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS): Removes diseased tissue and polyps while opening narrow channels between sinuses.

• Balloon Sinus Dilation: Expands sinus pathways by reshaping anatomy to restore natural drainage and provide instant relief.

• VivAer® Treatment: A non-invasive technique to gently remodel nasal tissue and improve airflow.

• RhinAer® Treatment: A non-invasive technique to precisely target and calm down the overactive nerves in the nose, helping to reduce the production and flow of unwanted mucus and shrink inflamed soft tissue in your nose to help relieve congestion.

• ClariFix®: Cooling treatment addresses chronic rhinitis, postnasal drainage, and congestion

• SINUVA® Sinus Implant: A non-surgical option that shrinks nasal polyps.

• Acclarent AERA® Eustachian Tube Balloon Dilation: A small balloon inserted through the nose to treat persistent Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD), a condition in which pressure, pain ,or clogged or muffled sensations occur in the ear. The balloon opens up a pathway for mucus and air to flow through the Eustachian tube and restores function.

Dr. Likness emphasizes that no one should have to simply “live with” chronic sinusitis. “There are effective treatments available. Most patients tell us they wish they had sought help sooner, and it’s incredibly rewarding as a physician to know we’ve been able to restore their quality of life.”

DIY: PET ENRICHMENT

As we approach the colder months, many of us struggle to stay active and engage in hobbies to keep us entertained. The same could be true for our pets! Just like humans, animals need mental, physical, and emotional stimulation to live happier lives. Enrichment involves providing activities, environments, and opportunities that stimulate an animal‘s mind and body, helping them live fuller and healthier lives.

WHY ENRICHMENT MATTERS

In their natural habitats, many animals spend their time exploring, problem-solving, foraging, and socializing. Domestication of some pets diminishes these natural opportunities and often leaves our pets bored and anxious. If these natural behaviors are missing, your pet is at a higher risk for boredom, anxiety, and destructive behaviors.

BENEFITS OF ENRICHMENT

The benefits of providing enrichment help your pet by giving them a safe and engaging outlet for their natural behaviors. Here are some reasons for you to provide enrichment in your pet‘s daily life:

Mental stimulation: Puzzle toys and training sessions can reduce stress and improve cognitive function.

Physical exercise: Interactive play and obstacle courses can promote healthy movement and mobility, which can help reduce the risk of obesity and other health-related risks.

Emotional Well-Being: Enrichment will combat loneliness, leading to comfort and reduced depression.

Behavioral Improvements: A mentally and physically engaged pet is less likely to perform destructive or aggressive behaviors.

Stronger Bonds: Participating in these enrichment activities together can build trust and deepen the human-animal relationship.

EXAMPLES OF ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES FOR SMALL ANIMALS

Dogs: Agility training, scent work, puzzle feeders, and daily walks in new locations.

Cats: climbing trees, window perches, new toys, scratching posts, and puzzle feeders are all excellent choices.

Birds: foraging toys, mirrors, safe chewable items, supervised out-of-cage flights.

Pet enrichment is, without a doubt, essential in responsible pet care. By incorporating stimulating activities into daily routines, we help our pets to thrive, not just survive. A wellenriched pet is a happier and healthier companion who enjoys a more meaningful life by our side. n

What’s Up with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Innovative therapy can deliver natural, non-invasive treatment for healing, recovery, and wellness.

When it comes to medical treatments, the hunt for holistic but effective therapies is an ongoing struggle for many patients who are seeking relief from a multitude of health conditions. Fortunately, the healing properties of pure oxygen can offer a transformative treatment.

A little-known but incredibly effective treatment, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), has been proven to provide relief for a wide range of medical conditions—from radiation injuries to diabetic wounds. By increasing oxygen levels at the cellular level, this therapy harnesses the body’s natural healing power.

Remarkably, HBOT has also been shown to increase stem cell mobilization by up to eightfold. These stem cells play a vital role in repairing and regenerating damaged tissue, offering particular benefits to patients dealing with chronic wounds, neurological conditions, or physical injuries.

Nurse Practitioner Jada Hieb at Midwest Hyperbarics in Sioux Falls frequently fields questions regarding HBOT. “At Midwest Hyperbarics, many people come to us curious but unsure about what to expect. The following are common questions new patients have.”

Q: DO I NEED A REFERRAL FROM MY DOCTOR?

Not necessarily. Some patients are referred, but many come in directly. We are happy to communicate and coordinate care with your provider as necessary.

Q: WHAT IS AN HBOT SESSION LIKE?

You’ll relax inside a comfortable pressurized chamber while breathing 100% oxygen. Sessions usually last 60–90 minutes. Many patients nap, listen to music, or watch a show.

Q: WILL I FEEL CLAUSTROPHOBIC?

Most patients adjust quickly. Our chambers are spacious, and our staff is available to speak with you at any time. Due to the transparency of the acrylic on the chambers, patients can see out around them and communicate with the staff through the entire HBOT session, offering a sense of peace and control.

Q: HOW WILL I FEEL DURING MY HBOT SESSION?

During the session, you’ll be breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber. Most patients describe it as relaxing. You may feel a gentle warmth as the chamber pressurizes and a slight cooling effect as it returns to normal pressure.

After your treatment, you may feel energized, clear-headed, or pleasantly tired — much like you do after a restorative nap.

Q: IS HBOT SAFE?

Yes, HBOT is considered very safe when administered under proper medical supervision. It is FDA-approved for multiple conditions and has been used safely for decades in hospitals, wound care centers, and specialty clinics worldwide.

Side effects are rare and generally mild, most often related to temporary ear pressure (similar to flying).

Q: WHAT CONDITIONS CAN HBOT HELP WITH?

FDA-approved uses include diabetic wounds, radiation injury, sudden hearing loss, and more. It can also be used for neurological recovery, inflammation, autoimmune support, sports enhancement, wellness, and more. Because of the mechanisms of HBOT, there really is a wide application of disease processes that it can be applied to as a holistic and natural adjunct therapy.

Q: DOES INSURANCE COVER HBOT?

Insurance may cover approved conditions. For other uses, HBOT is typically self-paid. We offer clear pricing and package options.

Q: HOW SOON WILL I NOTICE RESULTS?

Some patients feel changes in energy, sleep, or focus after a few sessions. For chronic conditions, benefits will be built gradually, with consistency over time.

Want to discover how HBOT can support your healing journey? Schedule a free 15-minute consultation today by visiting midwesthyperbarics. com or calling 605.743.0402. n

Myth: HBOT is experimental and unproven.

Fact: HBOT has decades of medical research behind it and is used in hospitals, wound centers, and private clinics worldwide.

BENEFITS OF HBOT:

• Boosts immune response

• Enhances healing and recovery

• Improves circulation

BEAUTY BOSS. BOWHUNTER. BOMBSHELL.

Jodi HUNTER

Marilyn Monroe once famously said, “Boys think girls are like books; if the cover doesn’t catch their eye, they won’t bother to read what’s inside.” If there’s anyone who represents both the allure of the cover and the depth of the story within, it’s Jodi Hunter—founder of Bombshell Beauty, and a woman whose life is anything but ordinary.

Jodi defies every stereotype and redefines what it means to be both glamorous and grounded. With her signature soft-glam aesthetic, radiant skin, and effortlessly modern style, she embodies and lives her brand. She turns heads not with excess, but with elegance—a beauty that’s polished yet approachable. Yet behind that flawless face is a woman whose journey reads more like a wilderness memoir than a red-carpet chronicle.

Raised in an entrepreneurial family in the Sioux Falls area of South Dakota, Jodi’s childhood was anything but conventional. Her parents owned an auto shop for 30 years, and her earliest memories are steeped with the scent of motor oil and the thrill of drag racing. “I was a tomboy through and through,” she laughs. “I practically grew up in that shop—watching, listening, and soaking up everything I could about building a business from the ground up.”

Her parents weren’t just role models; they were co-architects of her future. Her mother coined the name Bombshell Beauty, a brand identity that Jodi believes has been pivotal to her success. But it was her father who became her primary mentor. A skilled craftsman and savvy businessman, he helped design her studio and personally built the very first Bombshell Makeup Mirror—now an iconic centerpiece of her beauty empire.

Photos by Maggie Sweets

“He’s been my sounding board for every major decision,” Jodi says. “He’s always had a way of cutting through the noise and giving me advice that just makes sense. I owe so much of my business intuition to him.”

Jodi’s love and spark for the outdoors came from her grandfather, a passionate hunter. “Back then, girls were not invited to hunt,” she recalls. “So I watched from the sidelines." Yet even as she longed to join the boys on early morning hunts, she was also indulging her inner glam girl. “I’d play glamour shots with my cousins in my grandma’s bathroom,” she smiles. “They would style my hair, feather my bangs, and pose for Polaroid pictures—that’s where my love for beauty began.”

Jodi never gave up on her desire to learn to hunt like her grandfather, so when she was 16, she signed up for a hunter safety course and started hunting with high school friends. Self-taught and fiercely determined, she’s since become an avid bowhunter and conservationist, living by the philosophy of harvesting with purpose. Whether it’s wild game or gardengrown produce, Jodi honors the earth by eating what she harvests—a lifestyle rooted in sustainability and respect.

Her connection to the land goes far beyond the hunt. Jodi tans her own hides, prepares her own European mounts, and handcrafts jewelry from antlers and feathers collected during her outings. These pieces carry the spirit of the hunt and the stories behind them. “It’s about honoring the animal and the experience,” she says. “Every part has a purpose.”

As Jodi reached her teens, her wild spirit couldn’t be contained by the traditional classroom. She left high school as a junior, later earning her GED to appease her parents and open the door to her next chapter. After a few months of freedom, her parents sat her down for the classic “What are you going to do with your life?” talk.

“I had no clue,” she admits. “They said, ‘You’re good at makeup—why not go to beauty school?’ I thought it was a joke. Like, the cliché dropout move.” But with no other plan, she enrolled—only to discover the program required full cosmetology training, including hair, skin, and nails. “I knew I didn’t want to do hair,” she says.

After a few rough experiences on the floor, Jodi left the program. But she didn’t give up; she solely changed her classroom. Rather than traditional learning, she forged her own path by watching countless hours of YouTube makeup tutorials and attending national conferences to hone her craft. This self-made education ignited the passion for freelance makeup artistry.

But there was a major roadblock—South Dakota law didn’t allow freelance makeup artistry. “I was two months from graduating beauty school when I found out,” she recalls. “You had to be part of a brick-and-mortar salon.” Rather than accept this limitation, Jodi, with her father by her side, fought hard for change. Together, they met with legislators and drafted a bill to modernize the regulations. Though she was heartbroken when the bill didn’t pass, her father pointed out a loophole: South Dakota allowed in-home salons. Her parents offered up their front living room, and together, they transformed it into a chic, New York-style studio.

Just as her business began to bloom, South Dakota changed the law she had fought so hard for. She could now be the artist she was meant to be, building her business exactly as she had always envisioned: mobile, modern, and on her own terms. “It felt like everything had come full circle,” she says.

With her career on the right path, Jodi experienced a moment that would change her life. While browsing the bowhunting section at Scheels, she met the man who would become her husband. “He asked me out right there in the archery aisle,” she laughs. “And I knew—this was an answered prayer.” Their shared love for hunting and conservation became the foundation of their relationship. He’s been a steady, encouraging presence—helping her sharpen her hunting skills and explore new terrain.

Jodi’s career is a dynamic blend of all the parts of her personality that make her unique, which is why clients—from A-list celebrities to everyday women—are drawn to her. Though she won’t “glam and tell,” she considers herself lucky to work with an elite clientele. She loves helping women look their best for a wedding, senior pictures, or a red-carpet moment, but what she really loves is teaching women how to do their own makeup. She thrives on booking one-on-one makeup lessons to help clients learn how to use what they have and recommends luxury brands to give a bombshell look in the comfort of their own home.

Jodi believes her business is about more than just makeup. She’s breaking down the stereotype that women need layers of product and augmentation to be beautiful. “My love for makeup stemmed from being a little tomboy who never really felt pretty on the outside,” she shares. “Now, it gives me power. I want women to remain true to themselves and be who they are, and to use makeup as their tool. A tool to

enhance your natural beauty, not mask it. A tool to give you confidence when you need a little extra boost.”

When Jodi isn’t helping women become a bombshell in her studio, she indulges herself in another passion: all things outdoors and hunting. In the off-season, she works with Kuiu® Ultralight Hunting, a company dedicated to engineering the world’s most innovative performance hunting gear and clothing. Traveling to conventions across the U.S., Jodi represents the premier brand, applying the same skills from her beauty business to help hunters tailor their gear and apparel to the specific type of hunting they enjoy.

What’s next for Bombshell Beauty? Jodi intends to continue growing the 1:1 makeup lessons that have become a cornerstone of her business. In addition, she’ll launch her own line of makeup brushes this winter, paired with a custom brush and sponge soap. The soap, formulated from natural and sustainable ingredients, is a testament to her belief in a more mindful approach to beauty. This new venture perfectly marries her two worlds—the polished precision of beauty and the grounded, conservationist spirit of the outdoors.

Jodi’s journey through the beauty industry spans over two decades, marked by resilience, reinvention, and her fierce refusal to become boxed in. As she continues to build her empire, she stands as living proof that a woman can be both fierce and feminine, rugged and refined—a bombshell with backbone, and a beauty with brains. She’s not only the cover; she’s the entire, unforgettable story. n

NATIONAL WOMEN

IN SMALL BUSINESS

October - A time to celebrate women and their businesses.

October marks National Women in Small Business Month, a month to recognize the achievements of female entrepreneurs and their positive impact on the economy. October is also a time to reflect on the progress and possibilities of female entrepreneurship.

It’s hard to believe that before 1988, many women needed a male relative to cosign on a business loan. Congress passed the Women’s Business Ownership Act in 1988, which eliminated such laws and created support programs. The law created the National Women’s Business Council (NWBC). It also established October as National Women’s Small Business Month to highlight this groundbreaking law and honor the hard work of women throughout the country.

In the United States, there are 14 million women-owned small businesses. Women who own businesses account for nearly 40% of all small businesses in the country. Additionally, women-owned establishments also carry a powerful economic footprint. They generate $2.7 trillion in annual revenue, employing almost 12.2 million people.

And what about women and business in South Dakota? South Dakota Small Business Administration’s Office on Advocacy’s 2023 Profile showed 43.1% of all South Dakota businesses were women-owned. South Dakota ranks 21st in the country in terms of the number of small businesses owned by women. The state is rated the 22nd best state for women to own a business.

The city of Sioux Falls represents 23.28% of the state population, and women-owned businesses seem to be everywhere – especially downtown. With its low unemployment rate of 1.8%, the city continues to entice women entrepreneurs with a business-friendly climate.

In the traditionally male-dominated world of financial services, Cornerstone Financial Solutions stands out as refreshingly different. Flourish Wellness and Birth Co. is a women-owned business founded by sisters and midwives, Sarah Roe, CNM, and Erin Vande Lune, CNM. United by both family ties and a shared vision, they set out to create a safe and nurturing space where individuals and families feel truly seen, known, and heard. Grounded in their Christian values of compassion, integrity, and service, Sarah and Erin established the first freestanding, midwife-owned birth center in South Dakota. From the beginning, Flourish became a trusted resource for families seeking lowintervention, personalized maternity care.

As the needs of the community grew, so did Flourish’s mission. Today, Flourish Wellness and Birth Co. has evolved into a comprehensive wellness clinic, extending its care beyond pregnancy and birth to support men, women, and children in every stage of life. Services now include functional medicine, adult and child wellness visits, metabolic health, and health optimization, along with aesthetic services such as face and body contouring and laser hair removal. Educational offerings further equip families to be active participants in their own health.

At the heart of Flourish is a mission to uncover the root causes of symptoms and illness, design personalized care plans, and empower people to flourish within their communities. What sets Flourish apart is its holistic approach: blending evidence-based expertise with values-driven care that prioritizes prevention, wellness, and empowerment.

MARCY McQUITTY

Waking up to perfectly enhanced eyebrows, eyes, and lips is a dream come true, but one that is attainable with permanent makeup. In addition to the ease and beauty of having permanent makeup applied, it’s also a perfect solution for individuals who suffer from makeup allergies, eyesight or physical limitations and creating corrections for asymmetrical features.

Permanent makeup, which is a cosmetic tattoo or microblading procedure, rejuvenates your appearance by making your eyebrows appear fuller, your lips more lusciously shaped and colored and your eyes larger and more defined.

For Marcy McQuitty, over 20 years of specializing and applying permanent makeup for clients has given her the expertise to “magically transform and enhance their already natural beauty”. Working with individuals to meet their goals and taking the time to create perfection is her goal.

Marcy’s Permanent Makeup provides permanent solutions for eyeliner/eyebrows and lips to enhance color loss due to age. “When I give my clients a mirror, it’s amazing to watch their reactions. I’ve even had some clients start crying because they’re so happy with the results. It’s really, really gratifying to see this and to know I’ve helped restore their self-confidence.”

Four years ago, Amy joined Nielson Construction & House 2 Home LLC, where she has been able to combine her love for sales with her eye for design—creating the perfect balance of her professional strengths. DANIELE HARTLEY

I didn’t get into aesthetics to only hold a syringe—I got into aesthetics because I love helping people feel the best version of themselves. To me, this career isn’t about trends or quick fixes; it’s about connection. At Rejüv Skin Bar, every client becomes part of my story, and I make it my mission to know their story as well.

Here’s the thing: I don’t treat faces, I treat people. I want to know what lights you up, what you’re hoping to see in the mirror, and how I can help you feel like you—only more confident. My approach is real, personal, and 100% customized. No cookie-cutter treatments here, because honestly, you’re way too unique for that.

Of course, I bring the training, the precision, and the artistic eye—but what makes me different is the vibe. Walking into Rejüv isn’t just about needles and numbing cream. It’s about laughing, connecting, and feeling comfortable enough to say, “Yeah, let’s fix that little thing that’s been bugging me forever.” I like to keep it fun, approachable, and maybe even a little unexpected—because confidence should feel effortless, not stiff or intimidating.

At the end of the day, I don’t just enhance beauty—I help people see the beauty that’s been there all along. And if we share a few laughs (and maybe some life stories) along the way? Even better.

KYLIE OCKENGA

From early on I always knew I wanted to help people. I always loved making people feel good about themselves and making people feel pretty.

I moved to Sioux Falls in 2010 and later started working at a retail makeup store in the Empire mall. The skill sets there would unknowingly help me when I discovered custom spray tanning. A coworker introduced me to it and I was instantly hooked!

I’ve created Shade to be a safe place for my clients to come and feel comfortable in their own skin whether you have the mom bod, cellulite, stretch marks, or a little bit more cushion, all are welcome here. I’ve created a warm inviting environment where you want to stay, hang out and by the end of your service I want you to be like “Did we just become best friends? YEP!”

Remember the bonus of having a custom spray tan is that it’s going to fit your needs whether you’re looking for just the tiniest glow or Bronzed Goddess. I can create anything for you, this is your custom spray. Having an eye for detail helps a ton but also having the right solutions plays a huge part and I have spent plenty of time researching colors to make sure I only have the absolute best products for my clients.

So let’s get to know each other and see what SHADE we create for you.

STACY BISSOON,

MSN, APRN, CNP, WHNP-BC

Most people claim one area of expertise. Stacy Bissoon has built an entire career refusing to stay in just one. With 20+ years in healthcare and more than a decade as a board-certified Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, she’s also a master injector, entrepreneur, Taekwondo Black Belt, certified pistol instructor, and founder of the only women’s shooting league (A Girl & A Gun) on the eastern side of South Dakota. For Stacy, confidence is both a mindset and a skill set.

That’s why she created The Confidence Collective: because aesthetics should build confidence, not insecurity.

Stacy’s signature “fresh, not frozen” philosophy focuses on strategic enhancements that refine natural features rather than overpower them. Results subtle enough to keep secrets, striking enough to start rumors.

“I’m not here to change who you are,” Stacy explains. “I’m here to help you feel like the best version of yourself. Confidence shifts everything—how you walk, how you speak, how you take up space.”

Beyond traditional injectables, The Confidence Collective offers PDGF treatments, medical weight loss, medical-grade skincare, and additional wellness services. “My work isn’t about changing faces—it’s about helping women step fully into their power.”

What's New: Hair Happens or Not

Hair and scalp health affect everyone. At Hair Happens or Not, they have made it their mission to make high-quality wigs affordable and accessible for everyone as well as offer head spa treatments for every kind of scalp.

Mother-daughter team Heidi and Kendra Sandal began offering their services at 6010 South Minnesota Avenue in February of this year. They were motivated by Kendra’s own journey with Alopecia, a condition she has lived with since the age of 12. Alopecia is an autoimmune disease that attacks the hair follicles and causes severe hair loss.

“I had to travel down to Omaha to get my wig done every month,” says Kendra Sandal, “so after a while, I figured out how to do it myself. I was playing with the idea of bringing a wig place to Sioux Falls, and then I really got into the scalp health part of hair loss because a lot of people struggle with losing hair topically.”

Sandal is a licensed cosmetologist and certified Cranial Prosthetic Specialist. She offers wigs and holistic scalp care, including luxury head spa services. During her free consultations, she provides personalized solutions.

Sandal’s head spa treatments, described as “the ultimate treat for your scalp, mind, and soul,” include a personalized scalp serum, scalp treatments, and a hair mask. She offers a variety of spa packages focusing on relaxation, renewal, and rejuvenation. Treatments range from $60 for the Quick Calm Package to $175 for the Signature Experience Package.

“It just makes me happy to see people come out feeling good about themselves,” says Sandal, “For some people with conditions like psoriasis, a scalp treatment is a big relief.”

Head spa treatments aren’t just for those with scalp conditions, however. Anyone can benefit from a scalp detox and hair repair treatment.

“It’s like a facial for your head,” says Sandal. All of the head spa packages include customized aromatherapy, with some incorporating a neck massage and professional blow dry.

Kendra and Heidi Sandal are passionate about making wig and scalp care accessible by working with insurance to provide coverage.

“We are trying to work with state legislators to get a bill passed that would cover Cranial Prosthetics under insurance or at least help you out with them a little,” Sandal says, “because it’s not necessarily a beauty thing, it’s also for your mental health.”
