Creating a Couples Fantasy Football League A GAME PLAN FOR LOVE AND RIVALRY
By Chellee Unruh
As the NFL season kicks off, fantasy football fever sweeps the nation, and for couples, it’s a chance to tackle a new kind of playbook together. This high-energy game can spark playful banter, ignite friendly rivalries, or to be honest, stir up some relationship drama. But don’t bench the idea just yet—fantasy football can be a touchdown for your relationship if you play it right. Here’s how to decide if it’s a winning strategy for you and your partner, plus tips to make your couples’ league a season to remember.
IS FANTASY FOOTBALL A MATCH FOR YOUR RELATIONSHIP?
Fantasy football isn’t just a game; it’s a commitment that tests your competitive spirit and communication skills. Couples who thrive on a little friendly rivalry, share a love for sports, and can laugh off a loss are prime candidates for a joint league. If your relationship is established on trust and you both enjoy a challenge, this could be your MVP activity.
On the flip side, if you’re still navigating the early stages of your relationship, or one of you takes competition a bit too seriously, you might want to keep fantasy football on the sidelines. The season is long—17 weeks of NFL action,
plus playoffs—so be ready for late-night strategy sessions, heated debates over trades, and the occasional fumble in the form of hurt feelings. The key? Know your dynamic and set ground rules to keep the game fun, not fatal, to your romance.
THE BENEFITS OF PLAYING TOGETHER
Studies show that shared hobbies can boost relationship satisfaction, and fantasy football is no exception. It’s a chance to bond over draft picks, celebrate victories, and even commiserate over a star player’s injury. The game fosters teamwork (even when you are rivals), sharpens communication, and adds a dash of excitement to your weekly routine. Plus, there’s nothing like a well-timed trashtalk text to keep the spark alive. Whether you’re cheering for the same sleeper pick or battling it out for league bragging rights, fantasy football can create memories that last long after the Super Bowl.
HOW TO BUILD YOUR COUPLES FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Ready to kick off your league? Follow these steps to create a fun, stress-free experience that brings you and your partner closer together:
1. ASSEMBLE YOUR SQUAD: Recruit 8–12 teams for a balanced league. Invite friends, family, or coworkers to join the fun—mixing couples and singles keeps things lively. Pro tip: Ensure everyone’s committed to avoid mid-season dropouts.
2. NAME YOUR LEAGUE WITH FLAIR: Get creative with a league name that reflects your vibe—think “Love & Lineups” or “Gridiron Sweethearts.” Encourage players to pick cheeky team names such as “Touchdown Turtledoves” or “Sack Dance Sweetie.”
3. PLAN THE DRAFT PARTY: Schedule your draft the weekend before the NFL season starts (early September). Host it at home with snacks and drinks, or take it to a sports bar for big-screen energy. Virtual drafts work, too, if your league is spread out.
4. SET THE STAKES: Decide if you’re playing for bragging rights or a prize pool. If you opt for entry fees, keep them reasonable (e.g., $20–$50 per team) and use the funds for winner payouts or a celebratory end-ofseason bash.
5. APPOINT A FAIR COMMISSIONER: Choose a neutral, organized person to manage rules, settle disputes, and oversee scoring. If you or your partner take on this role, stay impartial to keep the peace.
6. PICK A PLATFORM: Use a userfriendly site like ESPN, Yahoo Fantasy, or Sleeper to manage your league. These platforms handle scoring, track stats, and make trades a breeze, letting you focus on the fun.
7. SET RELATIONSHIP GROUND RULES: Agree on boundaries to avoid tension. For example, no gloating after a win, and keep trash talk playful, not personal. Check in weekly to ensure the game remains a bonding experience.
KEEPING THE GAME FUN FOR BOTH OF YOU
To make fantasy football a relationship win, communication is key. Celebrate each other’s victories, laugh off the losses, and don’t let a bad trade ruin date night. Plan a weekly “league night” with snacks and game-watching to keep the vibe light. If tensions rise, take a timeout to talk it out—after all, your relationship is the real championship.
Fantasy football isn’t just about points; it’s about connection. Whether you’re high-fiving over a last-second field goal or playfully plotting your next roster move, this game can bring you closer as a couple. So, grab your partner, draft your team, and get ready for a season of love, laughs, and maybe a little gridiron glory. n
NEW 2025
MEDICARE/MEDICAID & HEALTH INSURANCE RULES
By Virginia Olson
On June 25th, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) published their 2025 Marketplace Integrity and Affordability Final Rule. This was immediately followed by the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB). We have all heard lots of noise about what COULD HAPPEN. Perry Bly, Pernell Insurance Agency, explains there is a lot that remains to be seen and clarified:
I thought I would share some real examples of how consumers of health insurance and Medicaid might be able to harm themselves under the new rules, as well as provide a solution or a resource to help protect themselves.
First, I must say that integrity and accountability are unequivocally necessary to help control skyrocketing costs of health insurance premiums in the individual market (non-group).
Next, I must address the LOSS OF MEDICAID. We have all been hearing this a lot lately. To be perfectly clear, people who lose Medicaid coverage are allowed a 60-day Special Election
Period (SEP) to obtain new coverage in the Federal Marketplace or their state exchange, depending upon where they reside. Generally, people who lose Medicaid end up with great coverage (low deductibles and out-of-pocket limits) when they are found ineligible for coverage under Medicaid. Loss of Medicaid isn’t a loss of access to Health Care but just a transition from one program to another. This transition is where people can easily harm themselves. If they miss the 60-day window to enroll, they will be without coverage and must wait until the next individual Open Enrollment, which begins on the first of the next year. The language in the Marketplace can trip people up when they try to get coverage on their own. Some falsely believe that they aren’t eligible for coverage or subsidies. Some may enroll in Bronze Plans with high deductibles and max out-of-pocket limits while they may have qualified for a Silver Plan with Cost Share Reductions (CCR). They always do better with guidance.
The unintended consequences of rule enforcement for the average consumer can be harsh. Some potential issues could be the loss of subsidy for not responding to requests for information. Loss of coverage for accidental non-payment of premiums. Loss of subsidy for crossing income thresholds can mean costly surprises when filing tax returns.
Consumers don’t have to face these challenges alone. There is a well-trained and certified experience resource in the form of the Broker-Agent community – a local resource for local plans. So many of our clients have told us they wish they had found us sooner. They list the time they wasted struggling to sort plans and details. The worst stories are from people who thought they were enrolling in coverage at the Marketplace and found themselves enrolled in terrible products that were misrepresented for far too much money, even paying agents directly. There are too many bear traps. The value of a quality health insurance agent is revealed quickly in the process. What you don’t know CAN hurt you. As your agent, we cannot charge you for the services we provide because we earn commissions from the carriers we represent.
We are the value-added benefit in this process. n

KNOWING YOUR REAL NUMBERS IS KEY TO A CLEAR FINANCIAL RETIREMENT PLAN
Selecting a financial planning partner committed to the long haul is critical.
Retirement isn’t just a finish line—it’s a new chapter many women spend years building toward while managing careers, caring for families, and navigating life’s ups and downs. But, when it comes to planning for it, many feel unsure where to begin. That’s where the right financial partner can make all the difference. You need someone with the expertise to build a solid portfolio—and the commitment to walk with you through every phase of life.
Helping women create a personalized financial plan to support themselves and their families throughout retirement is especially rewarding for Jill Mollner, CFP®, Wealth Advisor at Cornerstone Financial Solutions in Sioux Falls.
“I talk to a lot of women who’ve done a great job accumulating wealth but haven’t paused to ask: ‘What does that mean for the next phase?’” says Jill. “When we sit down to discuss their goals, they don’t necessarily have different needs than their male counterparts. But many women carry a lot of responsibility - making sure the family is taken care of, managing household finances, caring for parents. And they prefer to work with female advisors because they feel a sense of connection. Women often ask questions differently—and they multitask differently—which leads to different conversations.” At the heart of every strong retirement plan are four essential
financial numbers that can give you clarity and confidence to make decisions that reflect the life you want to live. If you don’t know yours, it’s time to speak with a financial advisor who can help you chart a clear and confident path forward.
THE FOUR ESSENTIAL NUMBERS FOR RETIREMENT
1. BOTTOM DOLLAR: HOW MUCH DO YOU REALLY NEED TO RETIRE THE WAY YOU WANT?
“This is where a lot of people get stuck,” Jill explains. “It’s not that they don’t have enough—it’s that they’ve never said out loud what they want retirement to look like. One of the most powerful parts of The Cornerstone Experience® is helping clients give voice to a dream they’ve quietly carried for years, sometimes one they thought was out of reach. From there, we build a plan that aligns with their values, supports their family, and makes space for that long-held dream.”
2. PORTFOLIO: HOW MUCH SUSTAINABLE INCOME WILL YOUR INVESTMENTS PROVIDE?
“We analyze your assets to understand what income you can rely on—and whether it will last throughout your lifetime,” Jill shares. “We help clients plan not just for everyday expenses, but for the extras—like traveling to see grandkids or taking meaningful family vacations.”
3. SOCIAL SECURITY: WHERE DOES IT FIT IN YOUR PLAN, AND HOW DO YOU MAXIMIZE IT?
Your timing and strategy for Social Security can make a significant difference. Understanding the nuances is key to optimizing this source of income.
4. TAX IMPACT: HOW DO YOU KEEP MORE OF WHAT’S YOURS?
Taxes can erode even the most carefully planned retirement income. Identifying ways to minimize the tax burden is essential.
Jill works with clients at all stages of life, but her mission—and Cornerstone’s mission—remains the same: to be a lifelong financial partner.
“We want clients for life, not just financially, but personally,” Jill says. “The better we know our clients, the better we can serve them. Being able to celebrate the good times and walk beside them in the difficult ones is both an honor and a privilege we don’t take lightly.”
If you’ve been putting off retirement planning, or if you’re wondering what’s truly possible for your future, call 605.357.8553 to schedule a no-pressure conversation with the team at Cornerstone. You deserve a plan built around you.
Blackfin Pure titanium. Pure style.
Blackfin re-writes the rules when it comes to eyewear. These elegant frames are crafted from titanium and feature a wide range of shapes for different facial structures. From classic to creative, you’ll love your bold new look along with unmatched comfort.
Short hairstyles are bringing on the wow factor, and they are oh-so-chic! It might be a tad dishonest to say short hair is inherently no-maintenance, but it can certainly be less time-consuming than long hair, especially when it comes to washing and drying time. Let’s explore some options for short hair in 2025.
First is the classic pixie cut—this one tends to reappear from time to time, and it’s always a cute style. This shortest haircut option still allows for personal flair and styling depending on the overall cut structure, with shorter or longer bangs or sides. Remember, the shorter you go, the more you’ll notice growth! Be sure to get a trim every four to six weeks to maintain this style.
Popularized by musician Gracie Abrams, the ‘bob’ is back with some nice styling tweaks. Bobs can range from chin-length to shoulder-length — Abrams’ sits on the shorter end. Rather than a blunt cut, she has textured ends that give her bob an airier feel. By adding a good oil mist on top for styling, you will achieve an effortless and light look.
The Prada bob has also made a comeback. It is a classic, chic look, characterized by a side part, no layers, and cropped close to the jawline, screaming ‘Paris Fashion Week.’ This look epitomizes high fashion.
Finally, the bixie wolf cut. Wolf cuts are popular for a variety of lengths because they are great for more textured hair. Comprised chiefly of texturing and layering, the bixie wolf cut retains a shape and style with little maintenance for an effortless medium-short look. It works wonders if you prefer a breezy, windblown hairstyle!
Trendy haircuts are fun changeups for everyonedon’t let the trends pass you by. Try something fresh, step out of your comfort zone, and embrace some Hollywood and international high fashion trends with your hair. n
Wearing (your) Fashion as an
ART FORM
By Jessalyn Holsing
Colors and silhouettes are a standard in fashion, even to the end of wanting to go low-profile with softer hues and unassuming shapes. Don’t get me wrong: I love chic, slender, and rounded-out looks that keep things supple and elegant, but maybe it’s time to step out of that comfort zone. Now might be the time to go bold!
Fashion for the latter half of 2025 is fearless. Striking silhouettes with standout shapes, bold colors, and patterns are showing up on runways with incredibly vibrant looks. My personal favorite is what Vogue is calling “New Victorian”- this trend features high collars, lots of lace, puffy poet sleeves, bows, and corsetry. Mixing and matching these elements allows you to shape your silhouette to specifically reflect you, whether to broaden the shoulders and pinch the waist, lounge in an A-line maxi dress, or something else entirely based on what you find chic.
Alongside this, we’re looking at broad shoulders, oversized jackets, and even skirts and dresses with wider bottoms, all giving a boxy and still pinching-the-waist look. Think big: skirts with feathering, ruffles, or beading on the bottom and jackets with shoulder pads, large collars, or wide lapels. We’re not emphasizing the body here, but we are emphasizing shape through fabric: Fashion as an Art Form. It’s giving Modern Art.
Speaking of which, outstanding patterns like large plaids are here, and we’re seeing them in both classic muted shades and bright colors, with cherry reds, gemstone blues, and bright yellows. Wide skirts and wide pant legs, large coats and jackets, faux fur, and sheer fabrics are also on-trend and are accessorized with belts and textured bags, purses, and totes to continue the emphasis on shape and form.
Don’t be afraid to take up space as we push towards the end of 2025 - make your stylish self a gift in a bold box with a big bow to show people you mean business and that your style expresses your unique art form. n

Innovative Pico laser tattoo removal offers a powerful alternative to previously permanent ink
TErasing ErasingTHE PAST
By Margaret Pennock | Photo courtesy of Liv Med Spa
here’s nothing like having a meaningful, beautifully designed tattoo permanently inked onto your skin— until it isn’t. In the past, your only options were a cover-up tattoo or laser removal, and even then, the removal process was many times limited by outdated technology and inconsistent results.
Fortunately, with the advent of the Pico laser, achieving better and faster results is now a reality. According to Kasandra Wheeler, Family Nurse Practitioner and owner of Liv Med Spa, the Pico laser has revolutionized tattoo removal compared to the older Q-switched lasers.
“The main difference is speed and effectiveness,” explains Kasandra. “Q-switched lasers use nanosecond pulses, while Pico lasers use picosecond pulses—which are 1,000 times faster. That ultra-fast energy delivery breaks the ink into much smaller particles, making it easier for the body to eliminate. As a result, Pico lasers typically require fewer treatments, are effective on all ink colors, are safer for all skin types, and cause less damage to surrounding skin.”
Tattoo removal is a multi-step process. Kasandra shares that most clients need between four to ten sessions, spaced six to eight weeks apart, for optimal results. However, for microblading or lighter tattoos, as few as one to two treatments may suffice. “Microblading removal is a specialty service we offer and has been in especially high demand due to the popularity of the procedure—and the rapidly changing trends in eyebrow styles and color. During the consultation, we provide a personalized estimate for both time and cost.”
Surprisingly, treatments are exceptionally quick—often taking just a few minutes, depending on the size of the tattoo.
“Most clients describe the sensation as similar to a rubber band snap or tiny pinpricks,” says Kasandra. “It’s very tolerable, especially because treatments are so fast. We also offer numbing options to make the experience as comfortable as possible. Clients are often surprised by how quick and manageable it is.”
In some cases, clients choose to lighten a tattoo in preparation for a cover-up.
“Cover-ups can be a great option,” Kasandra explains, “but they are often limited by the darkness and design of the original tattoo. Many artists recommend a few laser removal sessions beforehand to lighten the area. Giving them a cleaner canvas and opening up more creative possibilities for the new design.”
One of the most common questions Kasandra hears is: “Will it be gone completely?”
“And the honest answer is—it depends,” she says. “Some tattoos fade entirely, while others may leave behind a faint shadow. That said, the Pico laser offers better clearance with fewer sessions than traditional lasers. Many of our clients achieve full removal or results they’re extremely happy with. They tell us they feel like they’ve gotten a fresh start—like they’ve taken back control over their image. For us, it’s not just about removing a tattoo; it’s about helping people feel confident and empowered in their skin again.” n

DO YOU EVER WONDER what happened to your energy, drive, or focus? Does it feel like you’re doing all the right things—eating well, exercising, managing stress—but you’re still fatigued, irritable, or just not feeling like yourself?
You’re not alone.
Many women in perimenopause and men experiencing andropause (the male version of menopause) are told, “Your labs are normal,” even though they feel anything but normal.
The truth is, most primary care providers are not trained in optimal hormone management. They look at lab results based on averages of age-matched populations—what’s “normal” for a 52-year-old, not what’s optimal for a vibrant, energetic human at their peak.
At Encompass Wellness, we take a radically different approach: We don’t aim for “normal for your age.” We aim for how you felt in your 20s and 30s—when you felt your best.
WHAT IS BHRT?
Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) uses hormones that are molecularly identical to those your body naturally produces. Unlike synthetic hormones, BHRT is designed to fit your body’s hormone receptors perfectly, offering a safer, more natural way to restore balance and vitality.
And it’s not just about menopause or low testosterone—it’s about living optimized.
Feel Like You Again: THE POWER OF HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY
FOR WOMEN IN PERIMENOPAUSE AND BEYOND
Starting in their 30s or 40s, many women begin experiencing subtle changes that are often brushed off as “just getting older.” These may include:
• Fatigue or brain fog
• Weight gain, especially around the midsection
• Irregular cycles
• Mood swings or anxiety
• Low libido
• Night sweats or hot flashes
• Poor sleep
With BHRT, we balance estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and thyroid hormones to help you feel like you again—mentally sharp, emotionally stable, and physically energized.
FOR MEN IN ANDROPAUSE
Testosterone starts to decline gradually in men as early as their 30s. By the time they’re in their 40s or 50s, many men report:
• Loss of drive or motivation
• Erectile dysfunction or low libido
• Muscle loss and increased fat gain
• Poor concentration or memory
• Depression or mood changes
• Decreased stamina or recovery
At Encompass Wellness, we specialize in men’s hormone health, using comprehensive lab testing to optimize testosterone, estradiol, and other key hormones.
YOUR LABS MAY BE “NORMAL”—BUT ARE THEY OPTIMAL?
Lab reference ranges are wide—and often misleading. A total testosterone level of 300 ng/dL is “normal” for a 50-year-old male, but it’s nowhere near the 800+ levels seen in a healthy 25-year-old. Similarly, women may be told their estrogen is “fine” even if it’s far below optimal for bone, brain, and heart health.
That’s why we don’t just glance at labs— we interpret them in the context of your symptoms, history, and goals. We track progress closely and adjust your protocol as needed.
WHY BHRT AT ENCOMPASS WELLNESS IS DIFFERENT
• Personalized protocols — No one-sizefits-all
• Close monitoring — Labs checked regularly to adjust dosing
• Root-cause focus — We look beyond hormones at nutrition, gut health, stress, and sleep
• Safe and evidence-based — Our protocols are backed by science based evidence with longevity and safety in mind
DON’T SETTLE FOR “FINE” WHEN YOU CAN FEEL FANTASTIC
You deserve to feel sharp, strong, confident, and full of life. Whether you’re a woman navigating the hormonal rollercoaster of perimenopause or a man feeling the slow drag of declining testosterone—we’re here to help you reclaim your energy, your vitality, and your edge.
Your hormones aren’t just about aging— they’re about living.

What’s New: The Steel District
By Tabetha DeGroot | Photos courtesy of The Steel District
Atucked-away area of Sioux Falls has recently come alive. The Steel District, located at 150 E 4th Place, offers a variety of shops, eateries, and lodging. Since construction began nearly five years ago, it has rapidly expanded into an uptown destination for local food, shopping, entertainment, and fun.
Josh Thoma is the owner and chef at three restaurants in the Steel District: Dahlia Kitchen + Bar, Ironwood Steakhouse, and Big Sioux Burger. He came on the scene in 2019 from Minneapolis to pursue this endeavor with Lloyd Companies. The three restaurants opened in the fall of 2024, launching the Steel District into what is now a vibrant destination.
BIG SIOUX BURGER is what Thoma calls “the quintessential corner bar, featuring made-to-order smash burgers consisting of local steak.” “We are making our burgers out of real steak and knowing where that product comes from,” Thoma says, “It’s about 80% ribeye, 10% brisket, and 10% chuck.” He adds, “Of course, we grind in a little bit of frozen butter to make them delicious.”
DAHLIA KITCHEN AND BAR focuses on the flavors of Mexico accompanied by craft cocktails. “The bar is very much agave-centric,” says Thoma. “We have over 220 different Tequilas, and you can order tequila flights with shots of tequila ranging in price from $10 to $650 - so it’s a pretty broad spectrum,” he says.
IRONWOOD STEAKHOUSE is what Thoma calls a classic “Midwest steakhouse.” Steak and seafood lovers can take in views of The ‘Falls’ as they enjoy their food with picks from the wine list. “You can expect to find things like a relish tray and pierogis on the menu, and it all comes from within 200 miles of Sioux Falls,” says Thoma.
Thoma relates, “It’s important for us to be locally owned and operated - that’s one of the reasons that I spend so much time in Sioux Falls.”
The Steel District is also home to unique storefronts, including the Pasque Boutique and The Alcove. Pasque Boutique, named after the South Dakota State flower, offers both professional and casual women’s clothing as well as

permanent jewelry. The Alcove is the Washington Pavilion’s museum design store, which markets regional Artisan gifts. The Steel District also features luxury housing in The District Lofts and lodging at The Canopy by Hilton.
As for the future of the Steel District, Thoma says, “I think that the neighborhood will continue to grow and develop over time, and we’re excited to be a part of it.”
The Steel District will host an outdoor Event called ‘Dam Jam’ this fall on September 27 from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Admission will be free, and the event will feature live music next to the Big Sioux River, along with food and drink available for purchase. n

BEAUTIFUL IMPACT, AMAZING INVESTMENT
Freshen up your home & increase its value with improvements that pack a punch
By Margaret Pennock, Realtor
If you're considering home improvements, now is a great time to start, especially if you'd like your home to shine for upcoming gatherings with family and friends during the holidays.
Before diving in, pause for a moment to consider what updates will not only enhance your enjoyment of your home but also improve its functionality and long-term value.
KITCHENS
They're called the heart of the home for a reason—and a beautifully designed, functional kitchen makes a lasting impression. It's where families come together and where guests tend to gather. Whether you're working with a tight budget or planning a bigger investment, there are several ways to update your kitchen.
One of the most impactful changes involves updating the cabinets and appliances, along with installing solid surface countertops. While this type of renovation requires a significant investment, it can transform your kitchen without needing a complete remodel.
On a more modest budget? Consider painting the walls and cabinets, swapping the hardware, and updating lighting or plumbing fixtures. These minor changes can still make a positive visual impact.
BATHROOMS
Bathrooms are often the next space that captures attention—
whether from guests or prospective buyers. Spa-like, tranquility is increasingly in demand and can significantly enhance a home's appeal.
Upgrading cabinetry and countertops can be especially effective. If your existing vanity is in good condition and has a builder's grade mirror above it, consider framing the mirror or refinishing the vanity as a DIY project. You may be able to get a great deal on a stone countertop remnant from a local supplier—perfect for a custom look without the hefty price tag.
Don't underestimate the power of updated plumbing fixtures to refresh a bathroom quickly and affordably.
LIVING AREAS
Paint, flooring, lighting, window coverings, and standout furniture pieces can give your living spaces a completely new look that you'll enjoy every day.
If you're ready to move forward but aren't confident in your design skills, many kitchen and bath showrooms, as well as flooring and furniture stores, offer free design consultations. Just ask!
When updating with resale value in mind, steer clear of overly specific or bold design choices. Instead, opt for a more neutral palette that will appeal to a broader audience. You can always showcase your personality with easily changeable accents such as pillows, rugs, and artwork. n
Everyday Magic CLEVER USES FOR VASELINE, PAPER TOWELS, COFFEE FILTERS, AND CLUB SODA!
By Charlotte Hofer
Who says magic isn’t real? Magic could be living quietly, hiding in your cabinets—disguised as Vaseline, Paper Towels, Coffee Filters, or Club Soda. If you use just a pinch of imagination, these unsung multitaskers can save you time, money, and even your sanity.
VASELINE: THE MINI MIRACLE WORKER
This 19th-century classic does more than soothe chapped lips. It acts as a handyman, beauty guru, and pest-repellant all in one tiny jar! Buff it into scratched wood furniture pieces, and you can watch the blemishes fade. Silence squeaky doors or sticky windows with a dab. Scuffed shoes? A thin coat restores gorgeous shine to leather in a flash. For DIYers, Vaseline is a mess-free miracle – use it around doorknobs and hardware before painting for clean edges. Before a manicure, smear it around your nails to keep the polish in line. And if gum ends up in your hair (we won’t ask), it’ll slide right out with a little Vaseline magic.
PAPER TOWELS: THE SECRET STAR
Sure, you mop and blot with them—but that’s just the start. Wrap produce in a damp towel to keep it crisp in the fridge. Got a rock-hard bag of brown sugar? Microwave it with a moistened paper towel on top and presto—soft again. And in a caffeine emergency, fold one into a makeshift coffee filter. You can even make dryer sheets by adding a few
drops of perfume to one and tossing it in with your laundry; voilà—fancy scent without the cost. Is there anything a paper towel can’t do?
COFFEE FILTERS: UTILITY NINJAS
Beyond your morning brew, these little circles do wonders. They’re streak-free miracle cloths for glass and mirrors, even shoe polishers in a pinch. They’re also perfect microwave covers to dodge splash disasters. No more spaghetti explosions!
CLUB SODA: THE SPARKLING PROBLEM-SOLVER
Yes, it’s tasty with gin—but it’s even better at lifting red wine or tomato sauce from carpets. Pour it on, blot it with a paper towel, and repeat the process. Flat soda? Use it to perk up your plants—the minerals give them a boost. A glass in the fridge neutralizes smelly odors, and for jewelry, a soak in club soda and dish soap, followed by a toothbrush polish, brings back the sparkle. Some even use it as a toilet cleaner—and best of all, it has no harsh chemicals.
BOTTOM LINE:
Ordinary items, extraordinary results - use these clever tricks to prove you don’t need pricey products to work a little household magic! n

Sandi and Mike Durick make their move to Sioux Falls to be closer to family
By Margaret Pennock
For Sandi and Mike Durick, moving to the Sioux Falls area was a bittersweet decision. After spending the majority of their adult lives in the Pierre area, they chose to leave behind their beautifully renovated river home and closeknit community to be near family—a decision they haven’t regretted for a moment.
They selected a scenic lot on the far eastern edge of Sioux Falls, knowing they wanted a ranch-style home with a walk-out basement. Both appreciate wildlife and a peaceful setting and knew instantly that the property was the perfect place to build their dream home. Partnering with Schoeneman Construction, the Duricks brought their vision to life in just eight short months. “They were wonderful to work with,” says Sandi. “They did an amazing job for us.”
A design enthusiast, Sandi collaborated with Kaia Staatz, an Interior Designer and Lighting Specialist at Montgomery’s, to create a space that is both stunning and sophisticated. The design perfectly blends the couple’s personal style with their collection of sentimental family antiques and heirlooms. “Kaia helped us purchase a few key pieces and tie everything together. She was absolutely amazing,” Sandi adds. Kaia assisted with selecting countertops, lighting, flooring throughout the home, rugs, art, bedding, and outdoor furniture from Montgomery’s.

Kaia and SandiPhoto by Margaret Pennock
A soft, neutral palette flows throughout the home, grounded by a custom trim color selected by Kaia. Expansive windows flood the space with gorgeous natural light, and the dramatic, large-scale modern light fixtures serve as statement pieces— functional and artistic. The result is a serene, organically inspired oasis that genuinely feels like home.
Just beyond the spacious foyer and Shoji-style front door is a cozy office filled with family treasures. The nearly 4,500-square-foot home features four bedrooms and five bathrooms, with soaring 12-foot ceilings on the main level. Two-bedroom suites are positioned on opposite ends of the house, with the kitchen and living spaces thoughtfully positioned in between. “We really wanted a guest suite so our visitors could feel at home,” shares Sandi. “We love to entertain.”
SANDI’S LOVE OF FIREPLACES
is reflected in the design, as she incorporated three throughout the home. “They’re just gorgeous, especially in the evening when they are lighted,” she says with a smile. The main level great room’s 72” fireplace is stunning, with 10-foot wide gorgeous tile slabs that replicate stone and soar to the ceiling. “The tile on our main fireplace is the largest they’ve ever installed. Watching it go in was fascinating—it was incredibly heavy, but the end result is stunning.”
The heart of the home—the kitchen— opens to both the great room and a spacious screened porch, separated from the kitchen by a wall of windows. The porch is where Sandi and Mike spend the majority of their time when the weather permits. A stunning custom island topped with Cambria Luxe™ Quartz features uniquely rounded edges, which Sandi specifically requested. The darkstained, sleek modern slab cabinetry wraps the kitchen, concealing the hidden pantry complete with a sink, generous counter, and storage space. The backsplash is a gorgeous marble in flowing shapes that complement both the countertop and lighting.
A cozy sunroom with yet another fireplace sits just off the great room, offering a relaxing retreat where the Duricks enjoy spending time with their grandson, Cooper. “We’ve become so much closer to him since moving here. It’s been truly a blessing,” Sandi says.
THE PRIMARY SUITE IS THEIR LUXURIOUS SANCTUARY, featuring a serene bedroom and an elegantly designed bathroom—Sandi’s creation—with separate vanities painted in contrasting tones and a spacious walk-in shower. The bathroom leads into a generous custom walk-in closet, which connects to the mudroom with access to both the garage and living spaces. The hallway leading from the triple-car garage to the kitchen conceals an elegant mudroom complete with ample space to hang coats and keep shoes and boots neatly hidden out of sight.
The lower level of the home is just as impressive as the main floor, though with a distinctly different feel. While the upper level is effortlessly glamorous, the lower level enfolds a warm, South Dakota chic aesthetic. A fireplace with rustic stacked stone and shimmering glass crystals anchors the living space, welcoming you in. “We were able to incorporate the Durick’s furniture from their previous home to create a stunning result,” smiles Kaia.

The decor throughout the lower level reflects the Duricks’ love of nature, hunting, and South Dakota history. A full-size buffalo hide and mounted head serve as striking focal points. Additionally, the space showcases custom artwork from friends and local artisans, including shelves and a live-edge table made by a local craftsman. Mike has even contributed several of his created pieces, such as a wine barrel table and a handwrought console. “Mike can do just about anything,” Sandi beams.
The large yet cozy lower-level great room opens onto a beautiful patio complete with a gas fire pit—perfect for enjoying cool South Dakota nights and watching the abundant wildlife. Two additional bedrooms connected by a Jack-and-Jill bathroom, each boasting uncommonly large walk-in closets. “I wanted Jack and Jill vanities for our guests,” says Sandi. “One of the bedrooms showcases heirloom furniture, while the other features a hand-crafted bedroom set made by Mike.
While the Durick home is undeniably a modern showpiece, it is the carefully curated contents—meaningful pieces collected over a lifetime—that uniquely make it a masterpiece. “We’ve kept the design simple,” says Sandi, “but everything here has a story.” n

Crushing Back-to-School: Allergy-Free
Controlling allergies can dramatically improve your child’s performance and quality of life.
By Margaret Pennock | Photo courtesy of Midwest ENT & Allergy
When it comes to back-toschool prep, most parents focus on school supplies, establishing routines, and planning the perfect outfits. But if your child is dealing with sinus infections, congestion, poor sleep, or constant colds, it might be time to consider another essential item on your checklist: allergy testing. Ensuring your child returns to school in peak health can make all the difference in their academic success and day-today well-being.
Allergies can be deceptive—often appearing manageable with overthe-counter medications, at least temporarily. But for more severe allergy sufferers, these quick fixes may not be enough. Over time, the immune system can become overloaded, and over-the-counter medications like antihistamines and nasal sprays lose their effectiveness. Unfortunately, spring, summer, and fall are all peak allergy seasons. By the time August arrives, many kids are already feeling their worst just as school is starting.
For Sioux Falls mom Brook, the decision to have her daughter Logann tested for allergies was an easy one. “We’ve noticed she’s always had issues since she was three or four. She had a runny nose, puffy eyes, dark circles, and headaches caused by sinus pressure. I’ve had the same issues, so chances were she had severe allergies just like me.”
According to Dr. Tamura of Midwest ENT & Allergy in Sioux Falls, many parents who bring in their children have already tried a variety of treatments without lasting relief. “If you’ve tried different solutions with no success, we have additional options,” says Dr. Tamura. “Through comprehensive testing, we can develop a personalized plan to help manage your child’s symptoms and explore treatments that could significantly improve their life.”
Logann and Brook
Midwest ENT & Allergy offers two types of allergy testing: a blood test or a skin prick test. Both are quick, effective, and cause only minimal discomfort. “Because we can test patients right in our office and identify their specific allergens,” Dr. Tamura explains, “we’re able to offer advanced treatment options, set clear expectations, and discuss the timeline for meaningful results.”
Beyond medication, there are proactive steps families can take to reduce allergen exposure—and for long-term relief, immunotherapy may be the best route. Immunotherapy helps desensitize the immune system to allergens, decreasing reliance on medication and improving overall quality of life. Immunotherapy options include traditional allergy shots or sublingual (under-the-tongue) drops.
For Brook, who has been utilizing immunotherapy for years, seeing Logann experience the same miserable symptoms she experienced was the push she needed to start Logann on allergy immunotherapy. “We knew over-the-counter meds weren’t enough for Logann. Since starting injections, her quality of life has improved 100 percent. As a parent, you always want what’s best for your kids, and this was something we could do to help her. It’s a long-term commitment, but knowing she feels better and the therapy is working makes it completely worth it.”
Midwest ENT & Allergy offers state-ofthe-art allergy testing and treatment right here in Sioux Falls. Their expert team provides comprehensive evaluations and treatment plans using the latest technology and techniques.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MICROCHIPPING YOUR PET
By Dr. Amanda Zanger
In the world of responsible pet ownership, few steps are as vital—and as often overlooked as microchipping. Microchipping your pet is essential for many key reasons: safety, security, and responsible pet ownership.
You may ask yourself, what is microchipping? A microchip is a tiny electronic device, about the size of a grain of rice, typically implanted under your pet’s skin, usually between the shoulder blades. Each chip carries a unique identification number that links to your contact information in a secure database. When a lost pet is found and scanned by a vet, shelter, or animal control officer, the chip provides a direct path back to you.
One of the most compelling reasons to microchip your pet is the dramatic increase in the likelihood of being reunited if your pet goes missing. A microchip will dramatically improve this possibility! Every year, millions of pets go missing. Whether they escape through a backyard gate, slip out of a collar, or run off during a thunderstorm, the result is often a heartbreaking separation between pets and their families. While ID tags and collars are helpful, they are not foolproof. Unlike a collar or tags that could fall off, a microchip is a method that provides permanent
identification. In cases of emergencies or natural disasters, having this permanent identification on your pet could be critical in ensuring that they become reunited with you.
Not only does this microchip link your information to your pet, but it also establishes proof of ownership. Microchipping is especially important in cases of theft or dispute.
If you plan to take your furry friend to another state or country, having a microchip along with essential rabies vaccines will be required. Getting ahead of the curve and ensuring your pet has a microchip before any vaccines will help you obtain the necessary certificates for travel.
Lastly, microchipping your pet is a once-in-a-lifetime, quick, and reasonably inexpensive procedure. This proactive protection of your pet will be much less expensive in the long run, compared to the financial an emotional toll of finding your pet.
While a microchip isn’t a GPS or real-time tracker, it provides a critical backup that helps ensure your pet will find the way home. It’s one of the simplest and most effective things you can do for your pet’s lifelong protection. n

MIDWEST IMAGING - DESIGNED FOR YOU. Focused on clarity, comfort, and care
MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI) is a non-invasive medical imaging technique used to create detailed images of the internal structures of the body.
MRI has become a cornerstone of modern medicine, offering a powerful diagnostic tool for treatment planning and monitoring – without the use of harmful radiation. Also, the MRI’s high-resolution images of soft tissue, organs, nerves, and blood vessels reveal fine details.
At Midwest Imaging, located at 716 E. 19th in Sioux Falls, the team understands that getting an MRI can feel overwhelming for some patients – and they are here to change that. From the moment you walk through their doors, your comfort, peace of mind, and health become their top priorities. The dedicated staff takes the time to go above and beyond, working harder and longer when needed to ensure every patient receives a successful, stress-free exam.
It’s why Midwest Imaging has hand-picked the best imaging technology that gives their patients and doctors the answers they need quickly and accurately. Using a powerful 3T MRI, which generates a magnetic field that is twice as strong as a traditional MRI, images are incredibly detailed. They help the care team see exactly what is going on so patients can move forward with confidence.
Not a fan of tight spaces? You are not alone. Midwest Imaging offers the Open Upright MRI designed especially for patients who may feel anxious in traditional scanners and would like to be able to see out of the scanner. Patients can also watch TV while in the scanner for most scans. We also offer a “Big Bore” 3T scanner. This scanner is larger than traditional scanners. Both scanners can accommodate patients who weigh up to 500 pounds. These two options are available to help the patient relax, breathe easily, and often avoid sedation.
Both the Open Upright MRI and the 3T MRI scanner utilize advanced AI technology to enhance image quality significantly. This integration of artificial intelligence allows for sharper, more detailed images, enabling faster and more accurate diagnoses while improving overall patient care.
Brad Price, an MRI technologist, says his job is rewarding because patients who may not have been able to be scanned anywhere else, can be successfully scanned at Midwest Imaging.
“When patients successfully complete an exam that they were unable to complete in the past, it gives me a great sense of accomplishment. At Midwest Imaging, we have been blessed to have many options to accommodate patients’ needs,” he said.
“No one works harder than our staff to get a patient scanned.” Their dedication is unmatched, and I take great pride in that Price adds.

Sioux Falls wife, mom, sister, and daughter transforms tragedy into action
By Margaret Pennock
Photos by Kelly Middlebrooks
At 35, Fabre Sullivan is deeply grateful for the life she’s living. She’s married to her best friend, Pat, and together, they’re raising six healthy, happy children ranging in age from 18 months to 16 years. She’s a devoted stay-at-home mom, something she’s always wanted to be. “My husband says mine is the hardest job—one he says he couldn’t do,” Fabre laughs. “I’m so fortunate that our vision for our life has always been in alignment. I love being home with our kids, and Pat loves providing for us. We make a great team, and we make sure to remind each other of that often.”
In addition to being a full-time mom, Fabre also handles the day-to-day accounting—and occasionally steps in on the job site to help install siding, her favorite thing to do alongside Pat for the family’s business, DIA Construction. And in 2018, she turned a creative outlet into a thriving side hustle: Make Your Day Cakes. “I always made my kids’ birthday cakes, and one day made one for a family member who insisted on paying me,” Fabre recalls. “She encouraged me to start baking them professionally. It just grew from there.” Since then, Fabre’s baking hobby has evolved into a steady part-time business. “Baking and decorating are my therapy,” she smiles.
But behind the layers of cake and the joy of motherhood, Fabre carries a profound grief that has shaped her life in unimaginable ways. As one of seven siblings in a large, blended, but loving family, she was the sixth child. She is one of the few surviving. Over the years, Fabre has lost four siblings to suicide.
“I’ve experienced more loss than most people my age,” she says quietly. “I lost my brother Cory in 1999 when I was 10. He was 27. Then, my sister, Candi in 2010 at 43, my brother Chad in 2019 at 51, and most recently my sister Sam in 2022. She was only 35.”
FABRE SULLIVAN
REFLECTING ON HER FAVORITE MEMORIES of her siblings still brings her joy. “The strongest memory I have of Cory was his smile and how every time I saw him, I would hop up on his lap and kiss his cheek. Watching Chad compete in the rodeos; I could always see that passion in his eyes- it seemed like the rodeo was his favorite place to be.” “I remember having talks with Candi after Zach was born. She would come over to hold him, and I loved seeing her hold him; it was so natural to her, and she was a great mom to her boys. It was so nice to get advice from her being a new mom - I can still hear her voice and remember her hugs. Sam and I shared a room growing up, and I couldn’t sleep without her holding my arm at night - she was my comfort. One of the best memories I have of Sam was us playing outside on the farmthere was this willow tree on one of the farms we lived on, and I remember us climbing it together all the time and just sitting under it with our kittens and talking about life.”
Sam’s death hit especially hard. Just three years apart in age, the sisters had been especially close as they grew up. In the aftermath, Fabre found herself grappling with an unexpected emotion: anger. “It’s common to feel angry after a suicide, but I didn’t want that to be my last feeling towards her. Thankfully, I could talk openly with my parents, and they understood.”
Her openness and willingness to face those difficult emotions have fueled Fabre’s drive to share her story. “I know when I speak about my experience, it helps others who’ve been through something similar—or who are struggling themselves,” she explains. “Now, when I share my experiences, I know it’s going to help someone who’s been through the same kind of loss, struggling with that loss or themselves, or just needing that support to help someone going through a hard time. “I am the kind of person who doesn’t sit well with hard feelings - if something happens, I think, okay, what can I do to fix this?

I have initial feelings, and then I get to work - but there are things in life that you can’t just fix, and that’s when we have to take a different approach and figure out a way to get through. I felt this after Sam and knew I had to get out in my community and help people.”
Just one month after Sam’s passing, Fabre began volunteering with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). Her first role? It was working at the registration table at the Out of the Darkness Community Walk. “It felt so good to be involved and to meet others who had also experienced loss,” she says. “By the next year, I had taken AFSP’s Volunteer 101 training and was even more excited about their work in our state.”
Soon after, she and her son Ethan helped distribute walk shirts, and not long after that, Fabre was invited to co-chair the 2024 ASFP walk. She accepted, not knowing specifically what the role would entail, but determined to help however she could. Today, she is chairing the walk for her fourth year and also serves on the board of directors for the South Dakota chapter.
Fabre’s commitment to suicide prevention is a true family affair. Pat, their children, and even her parents have supported her mission from the beginning. Her oldest son, Zach, has launched a fundraising basketball tournament with her daughtersselling popcorn and water. Her mother and sister Brigette assisted with distributing Honor Beads that represent a specific loss and connection to the cause at the Walk Ceremony. In addition, Fabre’s father’s business, Herrboldt Harvesting, sponsored the event last year as well. “This volunteer work has helped me manage my grief in a really positive way,” Fabre says. “It’s become how I honor my siblings—with every event, every conversation, every story I hear. I know they’re with me, helping give strength to others who are struggling.”
That perspective has deepened Fabre’s appreciation for the people still in her life. “My family is everything to me,” she says. “They brighten my darkest days. Pat has been by my side and my entire family’s side through the loss of two of my siblings.
I have a close, special, and unique bond with each of our children - all of them have been so supportive of the volunteer work I do as it does take up time, and they are all willing to help and be right there with me.” I feel very blessed to have such kind-hearted, fun-loving, responsible kids.”
She’s also incredibly grateful for the unwavering love of her parents and in-laws. “My mom and dad are amazing,” Fabre says. “They’re always there, always willing to listen even through their grief and loss that they live with every day.” “I am so lucky to have them cheering me on along with my family, my cakes, and my advocacy work.” “All of our parents have been a huge support to Pat and me.”
Fabre has no intention of slowing down. Whether she’s raising her children, baking a custom cake, helping run a business, or raising awareness about suicide prevention at the many events and car shows she sets up resource tables at, her mission is clear: to transform grief into something healing—for herself and others.
“I’m just a regular mom and wife who’s experienced more loss than most,” Fabre says. “I want people to know that there are ways to channel grief into purpose.” “You don’t have to do it alone.” “We can all be part of the fight to prevent suicide.” n

“There’s a common misconception that if we talk about suicide it puts the idea into people’s minds, this is untrue. The more we talk about it the more knowledge we gain, and the more we will recognize those signs in ourselves and others, as well as give those who are struggling the space to tell someone if they are not okay, this is so important because it’s the first step to getting help. Don’t be afraid to directly ask your loved one, friend, or coworker if they are thinking about suicide. Just a simple conversation can save a persons life, I want to be the person in my community to start that conversation.“

“Golden Girls” Shine Bright
Four women celebrate nine years of daily workouts together

Seniors who exercise together reap numerous benefits that extend beyond physical fitness. Need some proof? Just ask Bonnie Peterson, Bonnie Thurman, Diane Navin, and Max (Maxine) Haggar. For the last nine years, these 70-something grandmothers have been working out together every weekday!
“We are dubbed the 'Golden Girls,'” said Max, “A troupe of four that show up at Woodlake GreatLIFE Monday through Friday for Body Pump, Step Class, Zumba, Cardio Interval, Pickleball, Weights/Machines, Yoga, Walking, or Aqua Aerobics.”
Consistency defines the women - for over 30 years, Bonnie, Bonnie, Diane, and Max have been exercising – knowing that their Senior physical and mental well-being would depend on how they cared for themselves before and after retirement.
“While we may pause to remember a middle child’s middle name, our hurdler stretches would put most 30-year-olds to shame!” Max brags.
They have sweated, slid, and skidded to exercise classes, showing up as early as 5:30 a.m., four to five days a week,
believing that this ritual is a lifelong endeavor to perfect their balance, coordination, muscle strength, flexibility, and bone health.
Still, their connection extends far beyond the workout.
“The post-class coffee chats are a vital part of our routine,” said Bonnie Thurman. “It is a time to share stories, offer support, and navigate life’s challenges together. We have celebrated triumphs, and offered solace during difficult times, the unwavering support we provide one another is truly something special.”
“It’s comforting to know that no matter what life throws our way, I have this incredible group of women on my side,” she adds.
“This long-time group experience with my three friends has taught me the powerful role that shared fitness and genuine connection can play in building lasting friendships and enhancing overall well-being.” “It is more than just exercise – it is now a vital part of my social and emotional life.”
Diane began working out in 1982 and discovered that exercise classes were life-changing for her. She started exercising with this special group of ladies when she joined
GreatLIFE. Working out with others enforced a sense of accountability.
“Exercising with friends makes exercising easier and more fun,” Diane said, “It is much easier to get up in the morning and get to class knowing your friends are meeting you there.”
“Friends encourage you and help you stay motivated,” she admits.
“Together, we have developed a deep friendship that encourages and supports each other.” “I know I always have someone there who has my back.”
In addition to their daily GreatLIFE workouts, the four friends take time to Line Dance, play Mah Jongh, go boating, ski, or golf. Also, they deliver Meals on Wheels, ‘Room Mother’ and participate in book and dinner clubs. And most of all, family is paramount – they relish “granding” the grands any time they can.
Working out together for years and now in their sizzling 70s, Bonne Peterson admits the group may have slowed down a little, but they have also branched out. “Two are taking part in group exercise classes, one is playing pickleball, and another is working out on the machines. But one thing that hasn’t changed is meeting for coffee afterward. These are my coffee buddies and forever friends.”
For Max, exercising together with her friends has provided much more than just health benefits and a sense of community.
“To lead a happy life, I need to be purposeful – exercise and comradery with my 'Golden Girl' buddies gives me purpose. Our team is a testament to the benefits of exercise – for the body, mind, and soul.” n
What's New: Rustic Oak Brands
Gourmet coffee meets flirty fashion

You might not expect to find a stylish boutique and gourmet coffee shop that rivals the best of Sioux Falls tucked away in the quiet town of Inwood, IA—but Rustic Oak Brands will undoubtedly surprise you. Just a short 30-minute drive from the city, this hidden gem is well worth the trip.
Rustic Oak Brands is a true family affair created and run by the Van Bochove family. Angie and her daughters, Rayna and Tori, manage the day-to-day operations while her husband, Brad, works behind the scenes to keep the historic building running smoothly. With deep roots in rodeo and western living, the family has woven that passion into the heart of their brand.
“Our store has a Western influence, but we also carry mainstream fashion and unique home accessories,” says Angie. “Every month, we feature a new coffee bar drink menu with four to six seasonal or themed drinks to keep it fresh and fun for our customers. We love adding a Western twist with names like Chute Boss and Ace in the Hole while also creating festive flavors for holidays.”
The boutique is stocked with trendy tops, ‘denim for days,’ and a stylish selection of dresses. You’ll also discover locally sourced and handmade goods like hand-poured soy candles, artwork, and the increasingly popular beef tallow skincare line. Don’t miss the authentic Western touches—think leather handbags, Aztec-patterned cosmetic bags, horn mugs made from real cattle horns, and stunning turquoise-inlaid jewelry.
Rayna brings her unique creative flair to her line of handcrafted leather items, including tooled leather earrings, playful hide wallets, and handbags. She also accepts custom orders for leather belts, purses, and even basic horse tack—blending craftsmanship with personality.
But Rustic Oak Brands isn’t just a business—it’s the way for the Van Bochove family to invest in their community’s growth. “We lost our community center, but there is now a plan in place to rebuild. A new fire station is going up, and Inwood is gaining momentum,” Angie explains. “A local group of gals even launched a farmers market. You can feel the energy—this town is ready for more.”
